Centre flays Alex Otti’s disregard for protocols, fairness

    • Governor denies allegations

Stakeholders under the aegis of Centre For Equity And Eradication of Rural Poverty have condemned  Abia State Governor Alex Otti for allegedly disregarding  protocols and fairness.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Sir Don Ubani, the centre denounced Otti’s unwarranted show of disrespect to the office of President Bola Tinubu and continuous stoking of embers of disunity.

According to the centre, in a democratic setting,  an elected official or a high-ranking appointee of government, irrespective of tier, should strictly observe protocol and should not allow his or her personal views becloud his or her relationship with members of the public, and especially in relation with the established status quo.

It accused Otti of ‘bluntly’ refusing to hang President Bola Tinubu’s photograph in his office, adding that it is against ethics and protocols  to ‘treat Tinubu with scorn and total disrespect.’

The centre  described the action as ‘primitive exhibition of unmitigated disdain and insubordination’ while claiming that as an afterthought  the governor later placed Tinubu’s photographs in his office and other offices.

The centre also advised Otti to stop stoking the embers of segregation, discrimination and disunity in the State.

According to the centre, the public outcry in Abia State where many civil servants are complaining about the Governor’s discriminatory policy in the recent appointment of Permanent-Secretaries in the state’s civil service should make the Governor have a rethink.

“In a state that has Seventeen Local Government Council Areas, equity, justice and fairness should have dictated that each Local Government Area should get a slot out of the Twenty-four Permanent-Secretaries. Just as there is application of Federal Character Principles at the Federal Level, the State should also apply that Principle in the distribution of strategic positions in the state.

“But from reports available, while some Local Government Council Areas in the southern district of the State were denied any slot, a particular clan in a Local Government Area in Governor Otti’s Abia-North Senatorial District got three Permanent-Secretaries. This is a clear manifestation of discrimination and injustice against a section of the State,” the statement cautioned.

Meanwhile, the Abia State Government in a statement by Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Ferdinand Ekeoma, stated that  all claims by the centre were ‘false’ and misleading.

He said the day the report was first published, Otti and the president were having an interesting discussion.

He described Otti as a gentleman of impeccable character; an accomplished banker who got to the peak of his profession with verifiable record of excellent achievements.

“The President knows very well that Governor Otti holds him very high, especially for his accomplishments as Governor of Lagos State. Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State is a bosom friend of Governor Otti for over two decades and can attest to this fact,” the statement stated.

    • Warns of imminent collapse of high tension lines

The Asagba of Asaba, Obi Chike Edozien,  has said some residents of Asaba, the Delta State capital, face the danger of electrocution.

The Asagba was reacting to the mining of laterite under high tension power lines within the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Asaba and iys environs.

He said the activities of miners have degraded the environment, and exposed residents of the community to ‘grave danger’.

The monarch, who spoke through an aide on Land Matters, Ogbueshi Ofili Mordi, in a statement yesterday, described  such mining  activities as illegal and capable of endangering the lives of residents in the community.

He alleged that the institution’s Provost, Prof Josephine Anene- Okeakwa was backing the activities of the miners.

Obi Edozien said the activities of the miners carried out near several pylons of the national power grid is “a big threat to the nation’s power sector and its economic development”.

The monarch said the mining  may lead to erosion and loss of arable land for agricultural purposes, loss of lives and properties in the area.

He challenged the management of the tertiary institution to produce documents which empowers it to give out the said land for mining .

Reacting, the management of the college assured that the mining activities were not illegal.

It added the institution was aware of the excavations by the miners.

Its Provost, Prof. Josephine Anene-Okeakwa, in a statement,  said the royal father or his representatives never contacted the school authorities on the true state of affairs. He said the school was surprised by the allegations on some social media platforms.

Her words: “To set the record straight, the college authority gave approval for excavation for the construction of Koka Road and a road behind the college with a view to reclaiming the land thereafter, wondering how a genuine approval will amount to illegal mining.”

Continuing,”They are not miners. Federal College of Education is aware. We gave them the place to excavate for the construction of Koka Road  and the road behind the College to reclaim thereafter. Did they try to find out from us? Mr Ofili Mordi, who just came back from where he went to, jumped into selling our land, and claimed that Asagba of Asaba is aware.”

“Does Asagba of Asaba have the mandate to sell Federal Government Land that has a master plan and is lodged with town planning office? Their write-up and postings are to scare us and confuse people because they know we are aware. The Federal Government is aware of all our activities as I cannot embark on any illegal act.”

She warned land grabbers against selling the institution’s  land, adding that anyone colluding with unscrupulous elements within Asaba community to encroach on the college land does so at their peril.

  • Reps to probe causes of clashes between Navy, Tantita security

Reps to probe causes of clashes between Navy, Tantita security

The House of Representatives yesterday ordered an immediate investigation into the causes of constant conflict between the Nigeria Navy and private security outfits engaged by the NNPC Limited to protect oil installations in the Niger Delta.

Adopting a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Donald Ojogo, the House said there is the need to immediately curb the conflict if the country is to meet its oil production benchmark on which the 2024 budget estimate is based.

The committee to conduct the investigation is headed by Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who is also the chairman upstream, while the chairmen downstream, midstream, funding, gas resources, ports and harbours, Niger Delta, environment are all members of the House Special Committee on Oil Theft.

Leading debate on the motion, Ojogo said if the causes of the constant conflict were not addressed, the possibility of increasing oil production to fund the 2024 budget would be almost non-existent.

He acknowledged that the Nigerian Navy, by law, is a statutory national security agency and an arm of the three Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria established with the sole purpose of protecting Nigeria’s maritime integrity and territorial waters.

He said: “This sole responsibility of the Navy covers the protection of Nigeria’s national assets, including the nation’s oil and gas infrastructure across the water belts of the country covering inland, onshore and offshore waters.”

He said the Navy has a history of commendable exploits within and outside Nigeria while on operations, making the country proud.

He disclosed that in its bid to take full advantage of human potentials across the Niger Delta, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), then as Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), in August 2022, firmed out intricate aspects of securing the nation’s oil and gas assets to some private security firms with deep knowledge of the areas in question.

According to him, this was done to protect such assets from vandals in order to stem oil theft, enhance productivity and ultimately engender higher production output to grow the nation’s economy through increased revenue.

Ojogo said such arrangements had recorded some positive results with regards to production output, even as the 2024 budget estimates presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alluded to high expectations of further increase in output by benchmarking same at 1.7m BPD.

He said these high expectations that could only have been on the strength of an efficient, effective and robust collaboration and synergy of both the statutory security outfit, in this case, the Nigerian Navy, and custodians of delegated duties (private security firms) appear to be threatened by an unhealthy rivalry and incessant conflicts of operational responsibilities.

He stressed that these cases of unchecked open conflicts and altercations have almost reached an embarrassing level of media brickbats between the Navy and some private security firms with such assigned responsibilities.

He expressed concern that “just last week, there was a reported case of exchange of gunfire between men of the Nigerian Navy and operatives of a private security outfit on the coastal waters of Ondo State, and parties involved adduced or advanced reasons for their actions and inactions with accusations and counter accusations.

“If this trend continues, an unachievable oil output projection looms ahead of the 2024 Fiscal Year and the implications of such development on the economy will be negative.”
