    Shettima to investors: Leverage energy sector opportunities

    Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged investors, both domestic and international, to avail themselves of the new opportunities created by power deficit and federal government’s bid to drive additional investments in Nigeria’s energy sector.

    According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, he also pledged the commitment of the Tinubu administration in addressing the country’s energy deficiency just as it remains focused on enhancing ease of doing business.

     The Vice President stated this on Monday during the financial bid opening for the privatisation of the five National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) Plants on Monday in Abuja.

    He said the occasion “serves as a robust assurance to bidders and the start of an investment with promising returns.”

    Represented by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Sen. Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, the VP said, “Nigeria’s power deficit extends an open invitation to domestic and international partners. We are here to urge collaborative efforts to craft enduring solutions.

    “The government remains resolute in addressing the energy deficiency and is focused on enhancing the ease of doing business”, the statement said.

    Sen. Shettima however urged prospective investors in the plants to “bear the weight of trust in utilizing these resources for the greater good of the nation,” even as he implored them to “adhere to the highest standards of best practices if we must pursue a shared objective.”

    The Vice President further assured that the “National Council on Privatisation and the Bureau of Public Enterprises are prepared to ensure that what we do has an effect on President Tinubu’s comprehensive eight-point plan, and a meticulous and transparent privatisation scheme within the power sector inspires confidence in our operations.

    “As regulators, our commitment remains steadfast—we must persist as facilitators of these reforms. There are no shortcuts on the path to realizing the dream we’ve promised our beloved nation,” the VP added.

    Sen. Shettima noted that the success of the ‘pivotal moment’ underscores government’s commitment, “not just as a friend to our enterprises and investors but as a facilitator of growth and development.

    “We are here to fulfil our pledge to the nation and reassure them of our resolve to support initiatives that foster economic vibrancy and sustainability,” he further noted.

    FAAN boss targets improved revenue generation

    Newly appointed Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs  Olubunmi Kuku yesterday urged workers of the authority to brace up in actualizing  the agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration for the aviation sector which include: improving  passengers’ experience, scaling up  safety and security measures, benchmarking services in line with international standards as well as  optimizing   revenue generation from  aeronautical and non – aeronautical sources.

    Speaking at a maiden meeting with senior personnel of the authority at its Lagos Regional Headquarters,

    Mrs. Kuku said her mission in FAAN is not start afresh, but continue the legacies of her predecessors in office because the airport authority as an institution important for the nation’s economy.

    Kuku said she will study the handover notes given to her to enable her understand the issues and areas requiring urgent interventions.

    She promised to build on past successes, ensuring professionalism with focusing on revenue generation, performance and if the need arises re- evaluation and recalibration .

    Receiving the handover from the Legal Advisor, Mrs. Bridget Onyemesi Gold, Mrs. Kuku said: ” We do not  need start afresh but build and improve on the past.”

    Highlighting FAAN’s significance as Nigeria’s gateway, Mrs. Kuku stressed the need for standard hospitality, protocols, and learning from global and national environments.

    She outlined her mission to enhance FAAN’s viability as a national asset optimization avenues to improve our services  while minimizing waste.

    “I want to drive on the viability of FAAN as a national asset, this is critical and not negotiable. We will improve on professionalism especially on security, safety and standards.

    “ Revenue generation is important and will be optimised and we will minimise waste. My mission is to make sure to increase both aeronautical and non- aeronautical revenue.”

    Mrs. Kuku encouraged staff commitment  assuring periodic reviews and recalibration as the dynamic aviation sector demands constant monitoring and adaptation.

    She  said during the course of implementation of the mission, FAAN will check itself.

    Kuku said :” We monitor  own  performance and will reset where it  need to, if there is any calibration because the sector is not static.”

    She emphasized collaboration with other sister agencies including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), whose acting Director General , Captain Chris Najomo is already offering useful insights.

    She said FAAN under her watch will consolidate engagement s with both local and international organizations including the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), the International Air Transport Association ( IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

    Kuku said she will also engage unions in the sector on the best ways to achieve workers welfare which would require adequate performance.

    She spoke of plans to scale up airport operational infrastructure both on the land and airside   to achieve  optimum user experience.

    Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) contributes an average of N1billion to Nigeria’s Content Development yearly, it was learnt yesterday.

    The General Manager Policy, Government and Public Affairs of CNL, Mr Esimaje Brikinn, disclosed this in his speech at a-one-day capacity training for reporters in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council. Mr Brikinn whose speech was delivered by the Manager of Communications for Chevron Nigeria and Mid-Africa Business Unit, Mr Victor Anyaebudike, also disclosed that the international oil giant had attained 97 per cent reduction of gas flaring in the country.

    Anyaebudike, said the training was meant to retool practicing journalist with emerging trends in order to make them remain relevant.

    Anyaebudike said: “The reason why Chevron is sponsoring this media capacity building is because we know the value that the journalists bring to the society. Most of the things we do and hear is what comes out from the media.

    “You say when you educate the journalists, you have educated society. That’s why we’re here. That’s why we’re making this investment.

    “Actually, we want the skills of the journalists to be good. The world-view is that things are changing in society. So for you to really educate the people, you must be educated yourself.

    “That’s what we are trying to do, to make sure that the journalists understand the real things going on in society and understand the changes that are happening.

    Osadebamwen said: “That hunger for true news sources has been one that has dominated the quest from the public on various platforms.

    “This call arises from the notoriety and penetration of fake news into the public space, the bigger brother, you would agree, to news distortion phenomenon misinformation, disinformation, mal-information and or propaganda.”

  • UN extends Nigeria’s maritime border

    The Federal Government has welcomed the decision by the United Nations (UN) to extend Nigeria’s continental shelf from 200 Nautical Miles to 220 Nautical Miles.

     The decision coincides with the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which will give a boost to the nation’s maritime sector.

    The Chairman, United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS), Adnan Rashid Nasser Al-Azri, disclosed the development in a statement regarding Nigeria’s submission.

     This approval allows Nigeria to redraw the territorial map of its sovereignty in the Gulf of Guinea, thereby granting the right to exploit the abundant carbon and marine resources believed to be present in the area.

    Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency’s (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh lauded the decision by the UN to approve a request for the extension of Nigeria’s maritime territory beyond the standard 200 nautical miles from the country’s coast.

    Jamoh said the extension of the nation’s maritime area has the potential to bring economic benefits to the country.

     “To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time the United Nations has ever approved additional maritime territory for Nigeria. We welcome this development, as it would boost our economic fortunes considerably. It is a plus for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu led Administration and I extend my congratulations to our Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola CON,” he wrote in his reaction.

    According to the UN, the Continental Shelf of a coastal state comprises the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas that extend beyond its territorial sea throughout the natural prolongation of its land territory to the outer edge of the continental margin. Also, a distance of 200 nautical miles from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured, where the outer edge of the continental margin does not extend up to that distance.

    In a grand celebration marking its 2023 Community Day, Lafarge Africa Plc, a leading innovative and sustainable building solutions company, has launched a series of impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects across its operational hubs in Ashaka, Gombe State, Mfamosing, Cross River State, and Ewekoro, Ogun State. This annual tradition underscores Lafarge Africa’s unwavering commitment to sustainable business practices and corporate citizenship in Nigeria.

    Amidst cheers and applause, Lafarge Africa revealed a diverse array of CSR projects, each meticulously designed to address specific needs within the host communities. In Ashaka, Gombe State, the company inaugurated a cutting-edge school infrastructure project in Lariski, AnguwanKellumi, and JauroMaza.

    Additionally, Lafarge Africa launched agricultural ecology projects, including the distribution of 900 bags of Urea/NPK for community farmers, and forged a partnership with NAERLS, ABU, Zaria, to establish demonstration farms and conduct sensitization programs. The community also received food palliatives for vulnerable and elderly individuals, scholarships for 50 students in Funakaya/Maiganga, and support for 200 students through the Grema Mustapha Scholarship scheme, each receiving #60,000.

    Further interventions in Ashaka encompassed solar borehole drilling at Emir of Funakaye’s Palace Bajoga, WuroAchama, Sharfuri Maternity, and JalingoAshaka. Lafarge Africa also committed to rural and community roads rehabilitation from workers village to Ashaka-Garri and Lariski and Sabon GariMaza, Pindiga Emir’s palace chamber renovation, clinic conversion to doctors’ quarters, and medical outreach programs benefiting coal mining communities and Funakaye residents.

    In Mfamosing, Cross Rivers State, Lafarge Africa commissioned the Solar Street Lights project at Akwa Ikot Effanga Community and Akpabuyo Local Government Area. The company provided educational support for 100 secondary and 40 tertiary students, provided NYSC support to host community schools, distributed over 10,000 exercise books, and supplied school desks while adopting school projects across host communities’ primary and secondary schools. Healthcare enhancements included equipping health centers with drugs in Abiati, Essien Town, and Akansoko, as well as constructing health worker lodges at Mfamosing community and training centers at EkongAnaku. Community infrastructure projects involved building a town hall at Mbobui, equipping Kasuk training center with modern tools for fashion and design training, and providing portable water in Abiati, Diamond, and Essien Town. Moreover, Lafarge Africa contributed to community livelihood through food and business equipment donations to 150 elders and implemented an Agricecology palm fruits project across host communities.

    In Ewekoro, Ogun State, Lafarge Africa spearheaded a groundbreaking transformational project, focusing on the construction of a 100-meter reinforced concrete road in Alagutan community. Other initiatives included the construction of Itori Magistrate Court Staff Quarters, culvert construction at Wasinmi Alafia, and an ongoing culvert construction at Olapeleke community. The company extended electrification services to the newly relocated OkeokoEgbado community, replaced a 330KVA transformer at OkeokoSekoni and Akinbo communities, and trained and equipped 48 individuals from host communities to establish their businesses. Lafarge Africa also provided business equipment to 192 elders, granted bursaries to support 204 local students enrolled in public tertiary institutions, distributed educational materials to enhance learning standards in public schools, and distributed over 5,000 exercise books to primary and secondary schools in host communities. Healthcare improvements included supplying Papalanto Community Health Centers with essential equipment and medicines, furnishing Elebute Community Health Center Staff Quarters, erecting a fence around the community town hall, renovating and fencing EgbadoAjegunle Health Center, and conducting medical outreach programs.

    The Community Day event drew the presence of esteemed government officials, community leaders, and members of the host communities, all eager to witness the positive transformations brought about by Lafarge Africa’s CSR initiatives. They commended the company for its commitment to the progress and development of their communities, expressing their support and commitment.

    Speaking at the Mfamosing celebration, the Deputy Governor of Cross Rivers State, Mr. Peter Odey, represented by the Head of Personal Staff, Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Chris Ojekpong, commended Lafarge Africa for its unwavering dedication to community development over the past 16 years. “Over the years, Lafarge, an outstanding beacon of commitment to sustainable and impactful community development has consistently demonstrated its dedication to making a positive impact beyond its realms of influence and profit making.     Lagos has restated its commitment to solve water supply challenges on a massive scale.

    The Executive Director (Operations), Lagos Water Corporation(LWC), Mrs Helen  Omolanke Taiwo restated this  at the Re – Commissioning of Mosan – Okunsola  2 MGD water works , Abesan and flags off Pipe Reticulation Extension in Baruwa .

    She said there are measures that address challenges and prioritise  projects towards  enhancing the lives of Lagosians through improved water supply.

    Her words: “As the Executive Director ( Operations) . One of my early diagnoses is the capability of Lagos water corporation to produce water provided plant(s) are in operational state.

    Water supply goes beyond just running plants to produce water. It encapsulates total water supply processes, that is, from source, production, effective distribution and commercial activities) remains the yardstick for an efficient water utility. The further diagnosis reveals that oftentimes water produced by Lagos Water Corporation ends as Non – Revenue water ( NRW) as there is missing link in our supply processes.’”

    She indicated that the corporation was  working to improve the capacity of the Abesan – Baruwa water supply scheme. To address water supply challenges in the Abesan Housing Estate, she said the Lagos water corporation embarked on a targeted approach to solve this problem in the most effective manner possible.

    On Mosan – Okunola Water Works ,she continued that it was a priority of the corporation to identify the peculiarities  of the area infrastructure. She noted: ” We prioritize the need to rehabilitate our Mosan – Okunola 2MGD mini waterworks . Additionally, there is a need to have a holistic understanding of the flow path.This propelled  us to appraise the pipe reticulation.We can only achieve this by validating the present realities of pipe networks. We have  executed some distribution activities which will allow us to implement the corporation flow management in Abesan and part of Baruwa .  The display drawings ( Abesan – Baruwa) Linkage and Abesan – Baruwa Reticulation)  are part of our achievement to enhance the operation here .”

    She enumerated the major challenges involved in  pipe reticulation and installation of new flow valves.

    According to her, ” the difficulty is in locating our appurtenances which were in most cases severed in the course of road construction if we are  address this challenge,.”

    She called for  more synergy between the corporation  and various state Ministries Department and Agencies  ( MDA’S) and Federal Ministry of Works involved in road construction for proper relocation of water pipes and appurtenances .

    She added: “With collaboration of all concerned in the sector, we plan to replicate this little success in so many operational areas as well as to open new frontier of water supply facilities in line with Mr Governor’s THEME Agenda.

    Earlier, the Managing Director/ Chief Executive , LSWC   Mukhtaar Tijani,  urged residents of Abesan and Baruwa areas to utilise water supplied by the corporation.

    He also pledged to provide free water connections to 50 homes on a first – come – first serve basis.

    Tijani said the Mosan Okunsola a two  Million Gallon per day  (2MGD ) Mini Water Works had been successfully restored, and that  the  5KM pipe network renovation and the  Reticulation network surrounding of Abesan Estate has been turned on.

    He urged the inhabitants of Abesan and Baruwa to pay their water bills promptly.

    Commissioner for Environment and Water resources, Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Olakunle Rotimi Akodu implored   residents through the Baale of Baruwa community to embrace the project.

    Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has appointed the former chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Tunde Oladunjoye, as his senior consultant on media.  

    In a letter of appointment dated December 11, 2023 and signed by the governor, he congratulated Oladunjoye, who is also the publicity secretary of the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the appointment.

    Oladunjoye was the assistant publicity secretary of the Directorate of Strategic Communications of the APC-Presidential Campaign Council for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and was also a member of the Publicity Committee of the APC presidential primary.

    With a bias for arts, social policy,  politics, human rights reporting and media advocacy, Oladunjoye,  for several years,  covered the biggest film festival in the world, the Cannes Film  Festival, Cannes, France.

    ; he also covered the Pan-African Film and Television  Festival of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, the Nigeria’s Eminent Persons  Agricultural Summit hosted  in   Geneva 2013 by President  Goodluck  Jonathan and   the World Hunger Summit hosted by  UK in 2013. He was part of the Presidential Delegation to the World Economic Forum, in Switzerland in  year 2013.

    He was appointed by the Federal Government into the Strategic Media Communication Committee of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) in 2012 and later as Media Adviser  to Nigeria’s  Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, between 2012 and 2014, before taking up an appointment as National Media Consultant to World Bank/FGN under FADAMA III Additional Financing Project  between 2016 and 2018.

    A published poet, he  edited Activist Poets: An Anthology  of Nigerian Pro-democracy Activists, published in 2002 with the sponsorship of the French Government through the French Cultural Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos. He has been a  resource person to UNESCO and Peer  Reviewer with the World Bank. He was Resident Journalist with the  House of Journalism, Lome,  Togo (2001), Visiting Journalist to Nigeria’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, Paris, France,  in 2005 under the leadership of Professor Michael Omolewa. He was a UNICEF Scholar  to South Africa in 2014 to study Design and Implementation  of Social Protection  in Africa.

    Oladunjoye served as  Board Member, Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, Member, Governing Council of Tai Solarin University of  Education (TASUED), Chairman Ogun State Television (OGTV), Member, Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic, Ukanna, Akwa Ibom State,   and Member Ogun State Muslim  Pilgrims Welfare Board. He was named United Nations Youth Ambassador for World Peace in 2008.
