Authorities of the  Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State are  mourning the death of a final year student of Agric Economics, Chisom Nwankwo, who was crushed to death by a commercial motorcyclist.

It was gathered that the accident occurred yesterday on Road 1 in Ile-Ife around 10:50am when the motorcyclist carrying a 200-level student of Psychology, Deborah Okunola, wrongfully overtook a Toyota Corolla car, but got hit by the side mirror, resulting in them falling off.

The commercial motorcyclist carrying Chisom, who was catching a glimpse of the early accident, however, got distracted and lost control of the motorcycle. Consequently a bus coming from behind ran over them.

  • How to address West Africa’s troubled democracy, by experts

How to address West Africa’s troubled democracy, by experts

Experts have proffered solutions on how to address West Africa’s troubled democracy amid the global challenges to building stability and peace.

The discourse, organised by a non-governmental organisation, African Refugees Foundation (AREF), was titled: Troubled Democracy: Interrogating violence, internal displacement and migration in West Africa.

The lecture, held at the foundation’s corporate headquarters in Surulere area of Lagos, had in attendance discussants including Prof. Kolawole Raheem, Adebayo Olowo-Ake and other dignitaries.

Projects Executive, Wole Adediran, said the discourse was designed to rekindle interest in peace and democracy in order to fully contribute and understand peace education and what the democratic ethos entails.

He said: “Several citizens shun their rights to participate in civic activities yet keep on complaining about our politicians, that turn politics into a profession. One needs to be involved and add impetus to the democratic template.

“The prevalance of abject poverty is indication of inequity and injustice. Democratic principles outline indicators to look for in a sane society, in developed and developing nations. How to develop our nation is the reason behind this discourse.”

The foundation’s president, Chief Mrs. Opral Benson in her remarks disclosed that the foundation encourages public discourse on peace education and deliberative democracy.

“The frequency of multiple crises that produce internally displaced persons (IDPs) will reduce, and chances of securing confidence among stakeholders will scale up. At the level of political leaders, community heads, religion leaders, stakeholders leadership, the essence of equitable governance must be provided.”

One of the speakers, Prof. Raheem in his lecture titled: ‘Mainstreaming Peace Education into School Curriculum and Non-formal Learning’ called for inclusion of peace education inclusion into the school curriculum and non-formal learning.

He said: “The world is in a turmoil! There are wars everywhere. We have wars which are precursors to intense armed conflicts. Those are the wars we have to purposively work against to prevent large-scale armed confrontations in our society.

“It is my believe that any society that wants to prevent war and maintain peace would have to systematically build a purposive Peace Education for the society. It must be in form of purposive formal and non-formal peace education for all.

“I even think peace education in some forms of well-constructed conversations/discussions should take place in government institutions like the ministries, government parastatals and other work places.”

Also, in his lecture titled: ‘West Africa’s Troubled Democracy as a trigger for violence, internal displacement and illegal migration.’, Olowo-Ake lamented the regime of coups and counter coups that dotted the African landscape in the aftermath of the first republic for most countries.

He emphasised that some of the coups were foreseen owing to the poor governance under the civilian leadership.

Olowo-Ake said: “Today, the gains of the 2000s appear to be fizzling out. While ECOWAS reversed military regimes and other unconstitutional changes of power in Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Togo and The Gambia, the sub-region suddenly witnessed a rash of coups”

He recalled that great progress were made in West Africa in the 1990s to democratise the sub-region, with strong fillip provided for such efforts by the 2001 Democracy and Good Governance Protocol of ECOWAS which greatly influenced the AU into adopting similar policies to frustrate unconstitutional changes of power across the continent.

“I will find it hard to submit that the recent spate of coups that we have experienced in West Africa amount to an epidemic, but describing the region as having a troubled democracy is definitely apt because out of its 15 member-States, 4 (Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger) are now under military rule.”

“One common denominator for these countries is the jihadi insurgency on the territories of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.”

MSMEs need innovative financing, says bank chief

Wema Bank Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, has identified innovative fiancing as key to resolving fundamental issues impacting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Women in Nigeria.

He spoke during the bank’s Donor Roundtable with the theme: Innovative financing: Gender-lens and climate resilient solution, held in Lagos.

He lamented that MSMEs, despite being the largest employers of labour, suffer from problems of access to capital, development of critical managerial skills, access to markets, logistics challenges, a slowing economy, and heightened inflation which prevents most of them from growing or surviving.

The CEO bemoaned the complication of climate change, saying it spurred significant shifts in human behaviour, while adding further strain to societal dynamics.

To address these problems, there is a need to create bespoke and innovative financing models that bridge funding disparities, he said.

Oseni stressed the need to ensure that these funding options offer flexibility and ease of access to the unique needs of Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs).

He said: “The world we face is a transformed one. The COVID-19 pandemic shut millions of people inside their homes and completely disrupted the global economy and the supply chain that underpins it. Global growth has been firmly below double digits for the last few years.

“Climate change has also unleashed a flood of migrants from the developing world into more developed countries. Pockets of conflict on the global stage have further exacerbated the growth problems we were already experiencing.

“The burden of this transformed world disproportionately falls on the youth and women in particular who face higher unemployment rates across every strata of society.

“We must ensure that funding options offer flexibility and ease of access to the unique needs of SMEs.”

Co-founder, Africa Sustainable Trade, Dr. Ama Onyerinma, stressed the need to tackle the issues of gender inequality, noting that there is a challenge for women in entrepreneur.

Over the years, Wema Bank has sustained a reputable history of empowering and supporting its customers financially, digitally, and in every other significant way. In 2023, the bank disbursed over N28 billion in loans to businesses across Nigeria.

Ohanaeze appeals for Kanu’s release, amnesty for IPOB members

Pan-Igbo socio-political group Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has again appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu.

Ohanaeze President-General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, made the appeal in a statement yesterday for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Iwuanyanwu said the incarceration of Kanu had “created unnecessary excuse for terrorism in a region whose people had, hitherto lived in peace and pursued their occupation wherever they were with patriotic zeal”.

He added that his release would be a “highly prized Christmas Gift to the Igbo and other Nigerians committed to a peaceful and secure country”.

“I want, on behalf of all Igbo worldwide, to appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his good office to direct for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“Kanu’s case is well known to all Igbo and Nigerians. It is the belief of many that the release of Nnamdi Kanu does not constitute any threat to our democracy or social cohesion and peace.

“Besides, a Nigerian court has passed a judgment directing that Kanu should be released. Many Nigerians from the 36 States and Abuja have also made appeal for his release.”

“As the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the leader of Igbo worldwide, I brought this matter up at a joint meeting of Southsouth, Southwest, Southeast and Middle-Belt of Nigeria and they unanimously endorsed that Kanu should be released”.

He said he was making a passionate appeal to Tinubu to assist to procure the release of Kanu.

“I further advocate that in addition to the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal government should adopt a non-kinetic approach to the security problem in the Southeast.

“God bless and protect our President; God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Igbo leader prayed.

  • Osimhen’s AFOTY glory can inspire Nigeria’s success at AFCON, says Rohr

Osimhen’s AFOTY glory can inspire Nigeria’s success at AFCON, says Rohr

Immediate past foreign trainer of the Super Eagles, German coach Gernot Rohr, believes the newly crowned  2023 African  Footballer of the Year (AFOTY), Victor Osimhen, can inspire Nigeria  to win her long-awaited  fourth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Cote d’Ivoire.

On Monday, the 24-year-old Napoli striker ended Nigeria’s long wait for an AFOTY winner since Nwankwo Kanu won the 1999 edition of the foremost continental individual prize, and Rohr who handed Osimhen his Super Eagles debut has now hinted that he was capable  of energising the country’s  campaign in January.

Nigeria has been drawn in a tricky Group A that houses hosts Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau as the best 32 countries on the continent gather in the cocoa- rich West African country.

“I’m so happy that Osimhen got the Africa Best Player  Award of 2023 because he truly deserves it after scoring so many goals and playing so well (for club and country),” the former Bayern Munich Defender told NationSport. “Of course, with his goals, he can drive the Super Eagles to AFCON victory; he can do that and I hope that he will.”

The 70-year-old Rohr, who now manages The Cheetahs of Benin Republic, said he was happy over the fact that he gave Osimhen his break with the Super Eagles, saying that the exemplary conduct of the former Lille striker on the pitch would stand him in good stead in years to come.

“He was 17 when I first saw him, and drafted him to the Super Eagles in my very first match with Tanzania and a lot of people were surprised, he said. “Again, many were also surprised when I took him to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt but he showed later all the qualities he has.

“This boy is still the same; humble, working hard and staying always modest, which is a good sign for a big player (desirous to be the greatest),” noted the vastly travelled Rohr who had previously worked in Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon before his detour in Nigeria between 2016 and 2022.

Akide-Udoh wants continuous Nigeria’s impact at CAF Awards

Former Super Falcons’ attacker, Mercy Akide-Udoh said that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) launch of the continent’s awards for women in 1999 marked the beginning of the recognition for women’s football in Africa.

Akide-Udoh who won the women’s inaugural award in 1999 alongside Nwankwo Kanu who emerged as the Africa’s best in the male category as well affirmed that being recognised along with the Super Eagles striker was very special to her.

“I feel blessed to have been the first woman to win this award back then in 1999. Winning it at the same time with a legend and fellow Nigerian like (Nwankwo) Kanu was very special and I think it was the beginning of recognition for women’s football in Africa,” Akide-Udoh said.

The former Pelican Stars attacker who graced  the 2023 CAF Awards where Nigeria’s duo of Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala emerged as the Africa’s best in the men’s and women’s categories , expressed surprised that it took Nigeria 24 years for the men’s to add to the five previous winners.

Akide-Udoh wants more Nigerians to continue to excel for their various clubs and country to position them for more recognition in the near future.

The former striker also urged the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons to use the latest recognitions to aspire to win the AFCON and the WAFCON next year in Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco respectively .

“I am excited that other Nigerians have done it again and I hope that we will see more of this in future. If anybody had told me that it would take so many years before another Nigerian man would win it again, I don’t think any of us would have believed it, but that’s football and God knows best,” she said. “I am proud of all the winners and I hope that as Nigeria has won so many awards tonight, this will be the start of more success for our football, from the AFCON in January to the women winning their own too and then to the FIFA World Cup.”
