Israel widens evacuation orders in Southern Gaza after heavy attack

Israel has ordered more evacuations in and around Gaza’s second-largest city of Khan Younis, followed by heavy bombardment, as the military’s offensive shifted to the southern half of the territory where Israeli officials assert that leaders of the Hamas militant group are hiding.

This is as the death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has surged to 15,523 since the start of the conflict on Oct. 7, the Health Ministry in the besieged Palestinian enclave announced yesterday.

“The toll of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip reached 15,523 martyrs” since Oct. 7, ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qedra said in a news conference.

The number of wounded through the same period has risen to 41,316, Al-Qedra added.

On the number of killed healthcare personnel, al-Qedra confirmed that total at 281, with hundreds injured. Additionally, 56 ambulances and the same number of health facilities have been completely destroyed, while 20 hospitals are out of service, along with 46 primary care centers, he added.

Al-Qedra noted that Israeli forces arrested four paramedics on Saturday despite their prior coordination, as they were heading northward from Khan Yunis in the south to evacuate the wounded.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip said they were running out of places to go in the sealed-off territory that borders Israel and Egypt. Many of its 2.3 million people are crammed in the south after Israel ordered civilians to leave the north in the early days of the war, which was sparked by the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas and other militants that killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel.

The United Nations estimates that 1.8 million Gazans have been displaced.

Heavy bombardment was reported overnight into Sunday around Khan Younis and the southern city of Rafah, as well as parts of the north that had been the focus of Israel’s shattering air and ground offensive. Juliette Toma, director of communications at the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, said nearly 958,000 displaced people were in 99 United Nations facilities in the southern Gaza Strip.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk urged an end to the war, saying civilian suffering was “too much to bear”.

Hopes for another temporary truce were fading. A weeklong cease-fire that expired Friday facilitated the release of dozens of the around 240 Gaza-held Israeli and foreign hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. But Israel has called its negotiators home.

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has urged Israel to avoid significant new mass displacement and do more to protect civilians. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris also told Egypt’s president that “under no circumstances” would the U.S. permit the forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank, an ongoing siege of Gaza or the redrawing of its borders.

On the ground in Gaza, there was frustration and mourning. Outside a Gaza City hospital, a dust-covered boy named Saaed Khalid Shehta dropped to his knees beside the bloodied body of his little brother Mohammad, one of several bodies laid out after people said their street was hit by airstrikes. He kissed him.

An American warship and multiple commercial ships came under attack in the Red Sea, the Pentagon said yesterday.

The move potentially marks a major escalation in a series of maritime attacks in the Middle East linked to the Israel-Hamas war.

The Pentagon said: “We’re aware of reports regarding attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available.”

The Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and it remained unclear what damage, if any, the vessels sustained in the attacks.

The Pentagon did not identify where it believed the fire came from. However, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree claimed the attacks, saying the first vessel was hit by a missile and the second by a drone while in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

He described the ships as allegedly ignoring warnings from Houthi officials prior to the attack.

Fed Govt takes delivery of Second Niger Bridge

The Federal Government yesterday took delivery of the Second Niger Bridge from Julius Berger.

It comes seven months after it was inaugurated by the Buhari Administration.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, said he was satisfied with the project.

He inspected it in the company of the contractor’s Managing Director, Dr Lars Richter.

The former Ebonyi governor said what remains is to light up the facility every night.

He added: “What we have agreed is to deploy solar solution in the coming weeks so that every night we don’t have to run on diesel.

“The roads are going to be completed with the two interchanges.”

One of them, to be built by Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), links Asaba town; the other cuts off Onitsha town to Obosi.

“President Bola Tinubu is very committed to the project.

“We’re going to acquire more land so that we can build service stations, restaurants, supermarkets and other facilities,” he said.

Richter said the event was a technical handover after the project had been inaugurated.

Director of Bridge Design and Construction (South) in the Federal Ministry of Works, Mr Bede Obioha, urged residents to help secure the installations.

He pleaded with road users to abide by traffic rules.

Boniface snatches Leverkusen’s  equaliser  against Dortmund

A goal from Nigeria striker Victor Boniface with 11 minutes remaining earned Bayer Leverkusen a 1-1 home draw with Borussia Dortmund  yesterday keeping the league leaders’ unbeaten record this season intact.

Dortmund scored just five minutes in through Julian Ryerson and the visitors looked set to be the first side this season to beat Leverkusen in any competition.

With the clock running down, Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso brought Patrik Schick from the bench and the move paid immediate dividends, with the Czech attacker finding Boniface for the equaliser.

An “unhappy” Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz told DAZN “even if we managed to equalize, when you see the match we would have hoped for better and we should have done better.”

Dortmund manager Edin Terzic praised his team’s defence in the “fair result”, but hit out at VAR, who declined to intervene despite what seemed like a late foul on winger Karim Adeyemi.

“We discuss VAR every week, we discuss clear wrong decisions, about handball and foul play, but that wasn’t enough?” Terzic said of the incident. “That’s what really upsets me, because it is not fair.”

The draw means Leverkusen end the round three points ahead of Bayern Munich on the ladder, although the Bavarians have a game in hand after Saturday’s match with Union Berlin was postponed due to heavy snowfall.

Telling reporters his players “did enough to win”, Alonso said his team, who have won 18 and drawn two of their 20 matches this season, needed to “be realistic” about the result.

“We know what we’ve done until now and we know what we must do. The path is clear and the players are totally convinced of the way forward.”

Alonso made eight changes to the XI which won 2-0 at Swedish side Hacken on Thursday, which secured them top spot in their Europa League group.

Coming into the match 10 points behind Leverkusen after just 12 matches, Dortmund were hit with a pre-match wave of the flu, ruling out several first teamers including Donyell Malen, Niklas Suele and Ramy Bensebaini.

Fresh from Tuesday’s 3-1 win at AC Milan which secured progress to the Champions League knockouts, Dortmund burst out of the blocks, taking the lead after just five minutes through Ryerson.

With his back to goal, Niclas Fuellkrug held the ball up perfectly before back-heeling to Ryerson, who threaded the ball into the goal.

Leverkusen turned up the heat for the remainder of the opening half but could not find an equaliser, Wirtz’s 45th -minute stunner being ruled out by VAR for a narrow offside.

Dortmund held firm amid relentless Leverkusen pressure in the second-half, before Alonso sent on Schick, who had only played one minute in the league this season.

The Czech striker helped Leverkusen equalize less than a minute later, sliding a ball through the Dortmund defence to Boniface, who tapped home from close range.

Earlier on Sunday, a second-half goal from Austria striker Michael Gregoritsch took Freiburg to a narrow 1-0 win at struggling Mainz.

Denied twice by the post early in the match, the 1.93-metre-tall Austrian scored with 20 minutes remaining, hammering in on the turn to give his side the lead, his first league goal since May.

Mainz’s Leandro Barreiro was inches away from an equaliser with just a minute remaining, but the visitors cleared the danger.

The win, Freiburg’s first in the league since October, sends the Europa League participants into eighth place while Mainz remain mired in the relegation zone.’

Chelsea may lure Osimhen with ‘crazy deal’

The on today, off tomorrow transfer deal for Nigeria international striker  Victor Osimhen took another turn over the weekend with discordant talks by Napoli boss Aurelio Des Laurentiis and a credible Italian football expert.

While Laurentiis claimed Osimhen is set to sign new contract that would keep him at the Diego Maradona Stadium for a longer time, reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano said Chelsea can still land the Nigerian goal machine with a ‘crazy bid’ in the January Transfer Window.

The Super Eagles ace  is being chased by some of the biggest clubs in Europe after dazzling in Serie A and the Blues are very keen on him.

Mauricio Pochettino has hinted in recent interviews that Chelsea are indeed looking to sign a new striker, and that is no surprise given their lacklustre start to the season.

Before yesterday’s 3-2 win against Brighton, the London club have won just four of their 13 Premier League matches.

Summer striker signing Nicolas Jackson has scored six goals in 12 league appearances. Christopher Nkunku is yet to feature due to injury but is expected to return soon.

By contrast, Osimhen has scored six goals in nine Serie A appearances before late  night clash against  Inter. Last term, he scored a stunning 26 goals in 32 league outings.

Several centre-forwards have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge recently but Osimhen has long been considered to be their top target.

Osimhen has been linked with a move to the Premier League and both Chelsea and Arsenal are understood to be keen on signing a new No 9 in the January transfer window.

However, their hopes of signing the 24-year-old, whose current Napoli deal expires in 2025, could soon be dashed.

Speaking at an event in Naples, De Laurentiis said: “With Osimhen, we are about to sign the contract that was pending this summer.”

Success who started his seventh game of the season in his 13th  appearance for Udinese  was replaced by Lorenzo Lucca in the seventh minute.

Lucca again put Udinese back in the ascendancy in the 72nd minute for his second goal of the game but Thomas Henry’s 97th  minute goal handed Verona a crucial road point.

Success will have to be examined before knowing the extent of his injury.

Meanwhile, Trabzonspor’s Paul Onuachu could not add to his seven league goals in his 10th  game of the season as his Turkish Super Lig side were beaten 1-0 at home by Kayserispor.

It was Abdullahi’s show thereafter scoring two more goals in the 33rd  and 10th  minute of the first half additional time. Ahmed Jimoh reduced it to 4-2 before the end of the first half also.

    Moffi’s coach hails Moses Simon

Nice coach Francesco Farioli  singled out Nantes’ Nigeria star Moses Simon for his role in his side’s disappointing  loss away to Nantes at the weekend.

The unbeaten run of Nice this season  was halted with the 1-0 loss to Nantes and coach Farioli described the loss as morale  damper for his team.

“The goal came from a long ball. We didn’t handle the second ball well. As I said, Nantes are a strong team, with individual talents. Mostafa Mohamed, I knew him in Turkey when he played for Galatasaray and I remembered his qualities. He has become even more mature, sharper, and more explosive.

“Moses Simon is also very strong in one-on-one situations. With these players, you can limit their effectiveness, but they will always create one or two chances. Their impact is significant in a match. We managed to give little away to them, but enough for them to score and win the match,” he said.

Farioli also hailed Terem Moffi for making attempts at goals during the encounter.

“Terem had a good game. In the first half, on three occasions he brought the ball into the box and provided good opportunities for shots. It’s an alternative. For us, it’s an option to play him there. It doesn’t mean he’ll play in that position in every game. It depends on the matches and the way things go,” he added.

Nigeria Boxing federation crisis gets messier

The crisis rocking the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) took another dimension at the weekend after the Nigeria Boxing Referees/Judges Association opposed the decision of the former president of the National Boxing Federation of Nigeria (NBF), Kenneth Minimah, to withdraw Nigeria from the International Boxing Association.

According to insidethegames, the referee body in a statement signed by Etim Okon, president of the association, in Abuja after their meeting expressed their full support for the appointment of Azania Omo-Agege as the interim president of the NBF. In the statement,

The Nigeria Boxing Referees/Judges Association, a federating body of the NBF, declared several points through its statement: “That we are still federating under the International Boxing Association (IBA).”

“That we have not joined nor do we intend to join the so-called ‘World Boxing’.”

“That if a few persons parading themselves to represent this association do so, they do that representing their parochial interest and not the generality of this association.”

“At no time was there a meeting or form of plebiscite conducted to ask where we would like to federate under.”

All these ideas, the members of the association unequivocally stated that they were totally and wholly with the administration of Omo-Agege.
