Super Eagles: Ignored Orban returns with bang

Nigerian sensation Gift Orban is back where he belongs as he scored a stunning hat-trick for KAA Gent in a thrilling five-goal clash against Breidablik in the UEFA Europa Conference League, UECL.

Despite being overlooked by Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro in his latest Super Eagles list, Orban delivered a remarkable display to showcase his ability as Gent overcame their hosts 3-2 on Thursday night.

After what has been a turbulent start to the season which saw him go ten matches without a goal and lose his place in the Gent first team, Orban is back where he belongs.

The 21-year-old made a return to the starting team as they looked to take a closer step to book a ticket to the next round on the road.

The Nigerian youngster scored in the 6th, 54th (via a penalty) and 69th minutes to wrap up a thrilling show as Gent avoided a scare in Iceland.

On the night that Peseiro made public his squad for the start of the FIFA WCQ, with Orban missing, the Gent star chose to remind the Nigerian coach of his immense potential.

The hat trick against the Icelandic outfit will raise eyebrows among fans who would question the decision to leave out the Tottenham target out of the Super Eagles squad.

But despite the omission, Orban will be the happiest player at the moment as he has answered his critics in the best possible manner.

APC chieftain congratulates Onowakpo, hails Ibori, Omo-Agege

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC ) in Delta State, Dr. Sylvester Onoyona, has congratulated the Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Joel Onowakpo on his victory at the Appeal Court recently describing it as well deserved and a hand of God in the affairs of man.

The congratulatory message of the APC chieftain was contained in a letter that he personally signed.

Onoyona commended the former governor and leader of the party in the State, Chief James Onenefe Ibori, and the gubernatorial candidate of the party in the 2023 general elections and former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege noting that for their dexterity and rigour to defend the mandate freely given to Onowakpo and others.

According to him, “the PDP goons were on their way to snatch the peoples’ mandate once again through the backdoor in accordance with their tradition of mandate rustling.”

In the same vein, Onoyona, who contested the seat for the Isoko Federal Constituency, at the last general elections said, he commended Onowakpo for his resilience and fighting spirit to have been able to defeat those he described as marauding PDP goons both at the polls and in the courts but was quick to give glory to God saying, “but for God, it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Commending the people of Delta South Constituency for standing firmly behind  Onowakpo whom he described as an astute, eminent gentleman who is hungry for the development of his people and material resources, he gave kudos to the party leadership led by Chief Omeni Sobotie, who he described as the father of the APC in the oil-rich state.

He described Sobotie as a thorn in the flesh of “mandate rustlers” bringing his experience to bear on all the cases against the victorious party faithful whose mandate were then under threat by those he said are enemies of good and qualitative leadership.

Onoyona also sent appreciative messages across the board particularly to leaders of the broom party in Isokoland noting that they stood solidly strong behind Onowakpo stating that, with the former tax man in the saddle representing the Delta South, the coast is clear for quality and productive leadership in tune with the Renew Hope mantra of the current administration.

According to him, with Onowakpo in the saddle, there would be a new lease of life for the people as every constituent will be carried along, noting, in that wise, every Onowakpo voter is a Senator.

“Rally around our distinguished Senator Onowakpo to enable him to deliver quality representation, and to bring dividends of democracy to the doorstep of every Delta southerner.

“The time has come for the people to see the difference between deliberate misrepresentation and quality representation. While the PDP, according to the politician, epitomises misrepresentation, APC’s Onowakpo will surely wear the crown of superlative representation and the delivery of quality service to the people.

“We believe in his capacity, in Onowakpo and others who are of the progressives family and not reprobates whose stock in trade is to disempower the masses and loot the commonwealth of the people. Therefore, I congratulate all victorious candidates of the APC in Delta state and beyond who are proudly flying the flag of Renew Hope.” The politician stated, noting that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration is hungry for the development of the people and should be supported.

  • Eno defeats AA, AP guber candidates at Appeal Court

Eno defeats AA, AP guber candidates at Appeal Court

The Appeal Court Lagos Division, has dismissed two separate appeals against the election of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State by the governorship candidates of the Action Alliance, Mr Akpan Jeremiah and that of the Accord Party, Engr Emem Coffie.

In a unanimous decision of the three -man panel, the Appellate Court held that the case lacked merit, and that Pastor Umo Eno remains the validly elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State.

The governorship candidate of the Accord Party, Emem Coffie had approached the Appeal Court, seeking that the judgement of the lower trial tribunal be upturned in his favour.

The AP candidate and his party who were represented by their counsel, Chidi Nwachukwu argued that his client deserves to be declared the Governor as other candidates in the election, were not qualified to contest the election.

Coffie maintained that the respondents did not present any witness, and as such their petition ought to have been upheld.

In his brief of argument, Counsel to Governor Umo Eno, Paul Usoro, SAN, Counsel to INEC, Kolapo Kolade, SAN and Mofesomo Oyetibo faulted the claims by the appellants that 800 polling units recorded infractions, saying no effort was made by the petitioners to identify the 800 units, neither was there any attempt to bring witnesses from any of the said polling units.

The respondents also told the court that the only witness the appellants brought, was the governorship candidate, Emem Coffie who admitted that he was only in his polling unit and after voting on the said date, went to his house.

“Every evidence they gave, amounted to hearsay and that is why the lower court dismissed the case,” Mofesomo Oyetibo, Counsel to the PDP told the court.

In the appeal filed by Akpan Abraham of the Action Alliance against the 15th September judgment of the Governorship Election Tribunal, he and his party had appealed against what they described as unlawful exclusion by INEC, but the respondents in their separate briefs urged the court to discountenance the appeal by AA as abuse of court process.

The respondents argued that the suit constitutes pre-election matters bothering on internal party disputes, which the party itself failed to resolve before the elections.

Delivering judgement on Friday, the Appellate Court in Lagos upheld the arguments of the respondents and dismissed the case as lacking in merit.

Meanwhile, the Appeal Court also heard the appeal brought before it by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Akanimo Udofia and the candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, Sen John Akpanudoedehe.

The duo is challenging Pastor Umo Eno’s election on the premises that he was ineligible to contest in the 2023 elections. Judgments on the two additional appeals by APC and NNPP, are also reserved to a later date by the Appellate court.

  • Experts draw FG’s attention to dangers of dioxins

Experts draw FG’s attention to dangers of dioxins

Experts on environment and health have drawn the attention of the Federal government to dioxins, a major product of several industrial processes, as well as open refuse-burning in Nigeria.

This was disclosed during the 8th National Conference on Environment and Health, with the theme: ‘Responding to Emerging Environment Health Hazards in Nigeria,’ convened by the Living Science Foundation,  Ile-Ife, Osun State, in conjunction with a number of strategic partners, and  held at the Precious Cornerstone University, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Professor Amos Fatokun, an authority in dioxins  was the 1st keynote speaker at the conference.

The conference disclosed that dioxins have been known to persist in the environment for decades, accumulating in foods during that period. “They have been implicated in various adverse health conditions including cancers, reproductive and developmental problems, and impairment of hormones and the immune system.”

According to the experts, dioxins represent a class of serious environmental hazard with ambient levels and exposure pathways that may be peculiar to Nigeria. “Yet they remain largely ignored, and the many opportunities for mitigating their adverse health effects through natural products abundantly available in the country remain untapped.”

In its recommendations, the conference affirmed that through appropriate policy measures, processes that lead to the formation and release of dioxins should be identified, monitored, and strictly controlled.

“Research clarifying the roles of dioxins in initiation and promotion of cancer as well as research into the possible use of several natural products available in Nigeria for “targeted cancer therapies” should be ardently encouraged. These types of therapies are known to offer superior advantages over current standard chemotherapies.”

The conference affirmed the nexus between Environment and Health but further recognized that the relative importance of the various environmental-health hazard is unique for each society. Hence risk evaluation and management have to be locally-driven, rather than directed by global organizations using one-size-fits-all paradigms, as is presently the case in Nigeria.

While congratulating the LivingScience Foundation for taking the initiative to promote local risk assessment of environment-health hazards through the annual National Conference on Environment and Health, it also commended the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on the successful tracking and courageous confiscation of mercury-laden soaps worth over a billion naira in Lagos recently.

It, however, urged the agency to further take the bull by the horns and address the even more hazardous ongoing administration of mercury-laden vaccines (such as Hepatitis B, Influenza, and tetanus-diphtheria vaccines in their multi-dose formats) to babies in the country. “NAFDAC should be bold to proscribe these products in Nigeria even as they remain proscribed in the developed nations, where they are produced and shipped to Nigeria. Conference counselled that NAFDAC should stop swallowing camels while dutifully straining out gnats.”
