In a significant boost to the Industrial Training Fund’s (ITF) efforts to certify Nigerian artisans with internationally recognised qualifications, a director, Mrs. Olayinka Shodunke, and 21 other staff members of the Fund were certified on Wednesday as international examiners by the City & Guilds of London Institute.

The training, which was aimed at strengthening staff capacity in instructional delivery, learner engagement, and assessment practices in line with City & Guilds international standards, followed the formal approval of the Industrial Training Fund as a City & Guilds Approved Examination Centre.

A statement by Thomas Ngor, Head, Press and Public Relations of ITF, said the approval that was formally communicated via a letter on November 1, 2024, by the Chief Executive Officer of City & Guilds, Kirstie Donnelly, MBE, further affirmed the ITF’s growing stature as a credible institution for skills certification and workforce development as well as empowered it to deliver, assess, and certify a wide range of globally recognised qualifications across engineering, information technology, construction, hospitality, and allied technical fields.

According to the statement, “With this certification, the ITF can now administer City & Guilds examinations in industry-relevant competencies that meet international benchmarks for Levels 2 and 3 diplomas and other certificates in trades including Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and IT Systems Support.”

Speaking on the milestone, the ITF Team Lead and Director of Standardisation, Certification and Consultancy Services Department, Mrs. Olayinka Shodunke described the certification as a landmark achievement for the Fund and commended the Director-General of the ITF, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, for his pivotal role in securing the City & Guilds approval and positioning the ITF as an internationally recognised examination centre.

She noted that the certification would have a far-reaching impact on the Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) Programme, a flagship Federal Government initiative being implemented by the ITF to train, retrain, certify, and licence Nigerian artisans to international standards.

  • FG sets up committee for launch of Edo indigenous airline

FG sets up committee for launch of Edo indigenous airline

    • As PDP faults Okpebholo’s plan

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo has set up a technical committee for the launch of an indigenous airline in Edo State.

The committee was constituted when the Governor of Edo State, Sen. Monday Okpebholo paid him a courtesy visit to advance discussions on the immediate activation of an indigenous airline for Edo State.

Governor Okpebholo, who was accompanied by key members of his cabinet, stressed the urgency of establishing a homegrown airline to operate from Benin Airport, describing aviation as a critical driver for Edo State’s economic revival, investment inflow and job creation.

Okpebholo in a statement by the Media Aide to the Aviation Minister, Tunde Moshood, revealed that the state government is already exploring several partnership options, including engagements with South African investors who have pledged to provide aircraft for the take-off of operations.

He said: “If I have my way, I want this airline to kick off immediately, like tomorrow, even before the election. Edo State needs a strong aviation presence to open up our economy and reposition Benin as a major hub.”

The Minister, who welcomed the initiative and described it as timely revealed that the Ministry has also been engaging potential investors who have shown growing interest in the Benin Airport and its commercial viability.

Keyamo recalled the historical significance of Benin Airport in Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, noting that it once served as a major hub for the old Midwest region during the heyday of the defunct Okada Air.

“Benin Airport used to be a strong aviation hub during the glory days of Okada Air. There is no reason it cannot reclaim that status. The interest we are seeing today confirms that Benin is ready again.”

To fast-track the process, the Minister requested that the governor nominate a point person who will work directly with the Director of Air Transport Management at the Ministry for effective coordination, regulatory compliance, and operational planning.

“This committee will report to me and you every week for effective coordination. With proper collaboration, Benin Airport should be fully operational between the first and second quarters of this year.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State has faulted plans to float a state-owned airline.

It said the plan was ill-conceived and another exposure of a government profoundly disconnected from the urgent realities confronting Edo people.

The Edo PDP said the idea of establishing an airline was not only unrealistic but profoundly insensitive.

It said running an airline was capital-intensive, technically demanding, and historically disastrous for most sub-national governments in the country.

Spokesman for the Edo PDP, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, in a statement, said an airline required massive upfront investment, continuous subsidies, and world-class operational competence, which, it said, the Edo State Government lacked.

Osa-Ogbegie said Governor Okpebholo has displayed an uncanny penchant for indulging in white elephant projects that offer optics without substance.

He stated that Okpebholo’s projects were expensive, poorly prioritised interventions in a city desperately in need of comprehensive road rehabilitation, drainage solutions, traffic management, and coherent urban renewal.

According to him, “This fixation on grand but misaligned projects only reinforces the reality of an administration that was never adequately prepared for the rigours of governance and now appears rudderless, reactive, and bereft of ideas beyond headline-chasing spectacles.

“Edo State does not need an airline to fly above its problems. It needs a government prepared to confront them squarely on the ground. Development begins with fixing the basics, restoring confidence, and pursuing realistic, people-centred priorities.

“The Edo PDP therefore calls on the Edo State Government to immediately jettison this ill-advised airline fantasy and redirect its focus to the pressing needs of Edo people. Anything less only reinforces the growing perception of a government without direction, seriousness, competence, or a coherent development agenda.”

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, Patrick Ebojele, urged the Edo PDP to endeavour to celebrate success and development.

Delta APC stakeholders meet in Asaba, emphasise unity ahead of congresses

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State on Friday gathered at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Asaba, where they stressed the need for unity, electronic registration and grassroots mobilisation as part of preparations for the party’s forthcoming congresses and the 2027 general elections.

Addressing leaders and members, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori stressed that leadership derives its legitimacy from the people and must be guided by humility, empathy and service.

He urged stakeholders to place collective interest above personal considerations, resist division and avoid unnecessary conflicts, noting that unity remains the party’s greatest strength.

The governor said meetings of this nature provide opportunities to review progress, strengthen structures and prepare for critical political milestones, adding that mobilisation, registration and participation would ultimately determine electoral outcomes.

While stressing the need for them to deliver massive votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all other elective positions in the 2027 elections, he said the number of votes they are able to deliver will determine their strength and what they are able to attract at the federal level.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo, SAN, urged members to maintain focus as the party approaches congresses, praising the progress recorded in the e-registration exercise and the party’s growing diversity.

He cautioned against rumours and delays, called for early engagement and consensus-building at the local level, and advised dialogue to reduce tension.

Immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, thanked Governor Oborevwori for convening the meeting and described his visit to Government House after many years as a gesture of inclusiveness.

He pledged to work in unity with Governor Oborevwori and other stakeholders to strengthen the APC.

Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, commended stakeholders for their unity and sustained engagement, urging intensified grassroots mobilisation to deepen e-registration by taking the exercise to homes and communities.

He emphasised inclusiveness, and consensus in the conduct of congresses, praising Oborevwori’s role in fostering harmony and urging leaders to return to their constituencies with renewed commitment.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Felix Morka, lauded Governor Oborevwori’s leadership and the digitalisation of the party’s membership register, recommending a consensus approach for the forthcoming congresses.

In his welcome remarks, State APC Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, said the party had recorded over 90 per cent realignment since April 2025, describing the gathering as evidence of growing unity and momentum.

On e-registration and congress preparations, Delta North APC Chairman, Ogbueshi Adizue Eluaka, noted peace in the district but highlighted challenges with registration.

Delta Central Chairman, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, reported progress with Okpe Local Government leading statewide and appealed for restraint pending guidelines, while Delta South Chairman, Prince Austin Oribioye, urged the resolution of technical glitches to meet targets.

The State E-Registration Coordinator, Prince Fred Mordi, said Delta State was selected to host the South-South training, reporting rising registration figures despite minor challenges and expressed confidence in meeting targets before the deadline.

A minute’s silence was observed in honour of the late Senator Peter Nwaoboshi who represented Delta North Senatorial District at the Senate.

APC UK exco inspects ongoing Lagos-Calabar coastal road

Members of the executive of the United Kingdom Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC UK) on Friday inspected part of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal road.

The inspection was part of their desire to promote the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, even as the electronic registration of APC members are ongoing across the federation.

Publicity Secretary APC UK Chapter Cllr.Tunde Ajisola, gave kudos to President Bola Tinubu for bringing the vision to reality, he said he was impressed with the level of progress made so far on the road.

“This enduring vision reminds me of 1959 when MI was constructed in the UK, people from all over the world came to see the beautiful road and they expressed delight.

“This brings us to that era because Lagos-Calabar Coastal road is an economic corridor that is going to run across the southern states of this country and there is going to be a linkage to Sokoto-Badagry as well.

“For me, it is money well spent and we say a very big thank you to president Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making us proud with this project,” he said.

In his remarks, Deputy Secretary APC UK Chapter, Hon. Ayokunle Agunbiade said he was glad to be part of the team that came for the inspection.

He said the road is a testament to the vision of a president that is ready to unify the country.

He explained that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road is a milestone achievement that will enhance both economic integration and infrastructural development across the southern coast line.

“This is a massive project that will bring synergy and closeness across the southern states. It will bring economic integration and investment opportunities for Nigeria and Nigerians.

“With this achievement, I urge members of the APC to continue to support President Bola Tinubu for continuity for the fulfillment of the Renewed Hope agenda for Nigeria,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairman South- APC UK Chapter, Hon. Olumuyiwa Adesua explained further that the Lagos Calabar Coastal road was a vision that came to reality because of the courage of president Bola Tinubu.

He said history has it that the implementation of the coastal road had been on paper for years, but none of the presidents ever had the courage to put it into reality until the time of the administration of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

“Going through the road, I see a road that will connect the economy of Southern Nigeria to the rest of the West African coast.

“The Lagos-Calabar Coastal road is not all about Nigeria because from here you can get to the Republic of Benin or Togo and that is massive.

“The economic front of the Nigerian economy is opened through this road and I believe many Nigerians will be thinking ahead to see how they are going to create businesses around this corridor, how we are going to engage the Nigerian youth.

“We use Nigeria’s money to execute this project and Nigerians are engaged to work on it.

“I have worked in the transport sector in the UK for years, and I know that the biggest employer of labour is the transport sector and this is also happening here.

“There is a need for the National Assembly to create a bill for the maintenance of projects like this as Lagos-Calabar Coastal road is not all about our generation but about the generations that are yet unborn,” he stated.

Tinubu knows how to fix Nigeria, says Olubadan

    • ‘President’s Lagos record shows he understands governance’

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has expressed confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, saying anyone familiar with the President’s political journey would understand that he knows what he is doing.

Oba Ladoja spoke with journalists on Friday after paying a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, noting that the President’s track record as former governor of Lagos State offers insight into his current approach to national governance.

“If you know where he is coming from, you’ll know that he knows what he’s doing. That is what is most important. He was able to get Lagos from where it was to where he left it, so I am sure that what he is doing now is in the right direction,” the Olubadan said.

The traditional ruler explained that his visit was partly to thank the President for making time to attend his coronation in Ibadan in September last year, adding that he took advantage of his presence in Abuja for the Daily Trust Dialogue to convey the happiness of his people with ongoing developments in the country.

Oba Ladoja acknowledged the complexity of governing Nigeria compared to a single state, pointing out that differing expectations and perspectives across the federation make leadership more challenging.

Nevertheless, he observed that states now have more financial capacity than during his own time in public office and are better positioned to meet their obligations.

“By and large, the economy has to be fixed, and it is being fixed,” he said, expressing hope that by the time President Tinubu completes his tenure in 2031, Nigeria would be a country all citizens can be proud of.

On areas requiring greater attention, the Olubadan urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts in food security, healthcare, and, most critically, security.

He lamented that insecurity has made it difficult for farmers to access their farms and is increasingly affecting the southern parts of the country.

Despite these concerns, Oba Ladoja said he believes the challenges are not insurmountable, adding that the President is addressing them in the right way.

The donation by Nwode, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP) is said to have brought the much needed relief and renewed hope to pupils, teachers and the host community.

Speaking on the gesture, CSP Nkeiruka said the initiative was part of her commitment to giving back to society and supporting the education of children, especially in underserved communities.

She said:”I saw the pictures of the pupils learning while seated on the bare floor, still hopeful.

“So few days back, I decided to make a small change in the school not because chairs, the school bags and shoes I got for them would solve everything, but because every child deserves comfort, dignity, and the chance to learn without unnecessary hardship.

“May this be a reminder that sometimes, kindness begins with noticing. And impact doesn’t have to be loud to be life-changing”, she said.

She noted that while the donation might appear small, access to basic learning materials plays a critical role in shaping the future of children

“It may seem small, but access to basic learning needs makes a real difference in the lives of our children. I am grateful to the school for allowing me to contribute in this small but meaningful way,” she said.

She also acknowledged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what she described as the opportunity and institutional support to serve communities beyond her official duties.

She reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to community partnership, describing the police as friends of the people.

The donation attracted commendation from community leaders, teachers and parents, who expressed deep appreciation for the intervention after years of unsuccessful appeals for government assistance.

Many described the visit as historic, noting that it restored dignity and confidence to the pupils and created a more conducive learning environment.

In a goodwill message, Nteoma Chimaobi, who witnessed the presentation, praised CSP Nkeiruka’s compassion and humanitarian efforts, describing her as a woman whose actions speak louder than words.

He said the joy and excitement displayed by the pupils and teachers reflected the impact of the gesture on the community.

“For years, the community sought help to improve the school, but their cries were met with silence. Today, hope has returned, and joy fills the hearts of the people,” he said.

According to him, beyond the school donation, CSP Nkeiruka has consistently supported empowerment initiatives, assisting individuals and small businesses, and helping families regain stability.

The event was marked by jubilation from pupils, teachers and residents, many of whom described the donation as a dream come true.

They offered prayers and goodwill messages, pledging to remember the day as one in which compassion, service and humanity were practically demonstrated.
