Mane looks forward to last AFCON dance for Senegal

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw says he hopes Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final against hosts Morocco will not be Sadio Mané’s last appearance at the tournament, insisting the national icon is far from finished.

Speaking in Rabat on the eve of the decider, Thiaw dismissed Mané’s suggestion that this year’s competition could be his final Afcon.

“His decision is no longer up to him,” Thiaw said. “There is an entire nation behind him, and they want to see him continue.”

Mané, 33, hinted after scoring the winner in Wednesday’s semifinal against Egypt that he would not feature at another Afcon. His remarks also suggested he may retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup in North America, when he will be 34.

The next Afcon will be staged in 2027 across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

“I think he made the comments in the heat of the moment,” Thiaw added. “The country does not agree, and as the national team coach, I do not agree at all. We want to keep him as long as possible.”

Mané, twice crowned African Player of the Year, guided Senegal to their first Afcon title in 2022, converting the decisive penalty in the final against Egypt. He also featured in the 2019 showpiece, making Sunday Senegal’s third final in four editions.

“Sadio is an exceptional player who would have deserved to win a Ballon d’Or,” defender Moussa Niakhate said. “More importantly, he is an incredible person — humble, hard working, and devoted to his country. Playing in six Afcon tournaments shows his consistency and longevity.

Arsenal held to frustrating draw by Forest

Arsenal missed a golden opportunity to take a decisive step towards winning their first Premier League title in 22 years after being held to a 0-0 draw at struggling Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners enjoyed the perfect pre-match entertainment by watching rivals Manchester City lose their derby to United, which presented the chance to go nine points clear at the summit. But, nine days after drawing 0-0 with Liverpool after City had again slipped up, Mikel Arteta’s men could not take advantage after failing to get past Forest. They had chances as Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka both went close, but they drew a blank.

The draw did see Arsenal extend their lead to seven points, which could be cut to four on Sunday if Aston Villa beat Everton, and they remain clear favourites to get their hands on the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2004.

But the missed opportunities could prompt some doubts in the Gunners camp as they have let leads at the top of the table slip in the past, notably when they were eight points clear of City in April 2023 only to fall short.

Forest were dogged and resolute and deserved a point, which was a timely boost having seen West Ham’s win at Tottenham pull them back into relegation trouble.

Mbappe scores in Arbeloa’s first Real Madrid win

Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa believes fan protests at the Bernabeu came from “people who don’t like” the club as his side beat Levante to move to within one point of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Madrid supporters waved white handkerchiefs before kick-off on Saturday and then aimed boos and whistles at players – in particular Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde – as well as president Florentino Perez.  “I know the source of these chants and campaigns. They come from people who don’t like Real Madrid,” said Arbeloa.

“It’s a pleasure to have a president who is the most important figure in the history of this club, alongside Santiago Bernabeu.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are set to co-host the 2027 edition, hoping to deliver an even better tournament following the 2024 CHAN tournament they jointly held a couple of months ago.

Pedro, Palmer secure first Premier League win for Rosenior

Liam Rosenior tasted victory in his first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea as goals from Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

A run of one league win in nine had placed the home side at serious risk of falling away in the race to qualify for the Champions League, and the situation could have deteriorated further had Keith Andrews’ side made better use of near-total dominance in the second half. The visitors could count themselves mightily unlucky to be making the short trip back across west London with nothing.

They had begun the afternoon in fifth place and should have ended it with their European credentials strengthened, but poor finishing particularly from Kevin Schade undermined a brave display, a demonstration perhaps of what is missing if they wish to be a regular presence in the top six. Chelsea were far from at their best but there was much room for optimism in Rosenior’s third game at the helm. His team dug in, showed bags of spirit and made the most of what Brentford offered them.

Pedro showed lightening-quick thinking to score when a ricochet fell his way in the first half, then substitute Liam Delap won a late penalty from a goalkeeping error to present Palmer with a goal from the spot.

Brentford though had the first clear chance to go ahead. Schade cut brilliantly inside Trevoh Chalobah but made the strange decision to square a pass rather than go for goal.

He called for urgent intervention of Osun State Government, lamenting that ritual killings had become a recurring issue in the area.

He said three such incidents had happened a few years back without the perpetrators of such acts being dealt with.

“We want the intervention of the government on the issue so that this matter will not be swept under the carpet,” he said.

Narrating what transpired, Alhaji Daud said: “The incident occurred on July 26, 2025, at about 4:00 p.m., when Ismail Abiodun, Usman Ademola, and Faruq went to cut grass at Arademi Area, Ikire.

“Abiodun and Ademola allegedly lured Faruq into a remote bush, attacked him, and cut open his abdomen in an attempt to remove vital organs.

    • LASEMA releases preliminary report on incident

The Qatar Airways yesterday explained why its flight operating from Lagos to Doha made an unplanned return to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on Friday.

The airline said in a statement that its flight QR 1406 made an unplanned return to the airport because of a technical issue that occurred in the aircraft.

The aircraft was said to have no fewer than 248 passengers on board at the time the incident occurred.

“The cockpit crew followed established procedures and landed the aircraft safely.

“All passengers have disembarked safely and are being taken care of on the ground and will be booked on the next suitable flights to reach their destination as soon as possible,” the statement added.

Also yesterday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) released a preliminary report on the incident.

According to an e-statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency acted promptly after receiving a distress alert on its 767/112 Toll Free Emergency Lines.

The agency disclosed that preliminary investigations conducted by its response teams revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was technical issues suffered by the distressed aircraft.

“All passengers of the distressed aeroplane were evacuated safely; no injuries reported,” the statement said.

It also disclosed that there was neither loss of lives nor injuries sustained by anyone in the incident.

“Despite the technical issues and forced landing, the incident did not result in any significant damage to the aircraft, and the aircraft has been secured on the apron, while recovery activities have been completed,” it added.

The fully loaded aircraft with 12 crew members was said to have developed a technical fault mid-air, triggering distress alerts and an immediate emergency response.

Oke-Osanyintolu assured the public of the agency’s readiness to respond to emergencies, noting that the swift and coordinated response helped to avert what could have been a major aviation disaster.
