2026 is year of victory, Adeleke tells Osun residents

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the year 2026 as an era of victory and prosperity when citizens must engage in electoral vigilance and activism.

Adeleke, in a statement through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed praised Almighty God for the successes and achievements of 2025 and prayed for an even more prosperous new year for all strata of Osun society.

Describing 2025 as a challenging year for Osun state due to externally induced constraints, the Governor expressed optimism that 2026 will be a year of liberation from all obstacles impeding the delivery of good governance and democratic dividends in Osun state.

The governor urged the people to pray fervently for Osun state for a successful, hitch-free electoral process and to ask God for the failure of evil plots by some dark forces to plunge the state into chaos.

“2026 is a defining moment for Osun state as the election year for the governorship poll. Some people are busy beating the drums of war. We should pray to God to disappoint them and to make their plots come to nought.

“Election is not war; it is the exercise of sovereignty by the people. This is a democracy where people reserve the right to vote for leaders of their choice. Any attempt to deny the people their right to vote amounts to undermining the democratic life of the state.

“I must also add that those seeking power through inflicting hardship on the Osun people will fail at the polls. People will surely use their votes to punish those behind the illegal seizure of Osun funds. There can be no shortcut to power in a true democracy; the votes and voices of the people are the undiluted channels.

“Osun is enjoying good governance, and I call on our people and residents to rise in defence of their constitutional rights. We must ensure our vote count; we must defend our rights to enjoy good governance as enshrined in the constitution, the governor was quoted as saying.

He reassured the people of the state of his resolute determination to forge ahead with the delivery of services and democratic dividends, promising and vowing to lead the people to another victory in the August 2026 polls.

Oyebanji urged Ekiti people to intensify their prayers for the President and his administration to successfully implement impactful reforms that will make life better for Nigerians and rescue them from those holding the country by the jugular.

Air Peace agrees to refund affected Jamaica-bound passengers

Air Peace Limited has agreed to refund affected Jamaica-bound passengers who were reportedly stranded in Barbados following a flight diversion, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has affirmed.

Its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu confirmed in a post on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter), on Friday.

This is as Air Peace Limited strongly refuted the allegations, describing reports that it sold tickets to Jamaica and dumped passengers in Barbados as misleading and inaccurate.

Some of the affected passengers had claimed they purchased Air Peace tickets for a Lagos–Kingston, Jamaica flight, only to be informed at the airport that the airline would no longer fly directly to Jamaica but to Barbados instead.

The flight departed Lagos on December 21, 2025.

But in its explanation, a statement signed by its management on Monday, the airline said all tickets were sold in line with international airline sales practices and aviation regulations, insisting that it did not mislead passengers or engage in deceptive practices.

Air Peace explained that during pre-departure profiling and documentation checks at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, it was discovered that some passengers lacked the required transit visas to travel via Antigua to their final destinations, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.

According to the airline, affected passengers were immediately offered full refunds, which some accepted, while others voluntarily requested rerouting through Barbados, noting that Nigerian passport holders do not require transit visas through Barbados.

“Based solely on this voluntary request, Air Peace facilitated the rerouting. In total, 42 passengers freely and expressly had their tickets rerouted through Barbados to their final destinations. No passenger was forced, coerced, or compelled to travel to Barbados,” the airline stated.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, returned to the scene of the Christmas Eve fire at Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, to assess the emergency response at the site.

A day before the governor’s visit, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said it had opened Help Desk at the site of the fire incident, to address concerns regarding persons reportedly missing.

The State’s firefighters and emergency management team, joined by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and security agencies, are yet to leave the site, combing the debris for rescue of possible survivors that could be trapped.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser – Media and Publicity to the Lagos State governor,  Gboyega  Akosile, the governor who was at the fire site, confirmed the death of eight victims in the inferno, with three of them burnt beyond recognition.

Thirteen traders trapped in the rubbles were rescued alive by the combined team of first responders.

Five bodies, the governor disclosed, had been identified by their families, pointing out that the State Government would conduct DNA tests on the three charred bodies evacuated from the site to identify their families.

After assessing the magnitude of the damage done by the GNI building fire on surrounding buildings, Sanwo-Olu moved round the adjoining streets within the Balogun Market to audit the high-rise buildings.

Revelation pointed to many contraventions and flouting of building codes by the traders in the Balogun Market, prompting Sanwo-Olu to direct complete regeneration of the market for restoration of its aesthetics and space.

Sanwo-Olu said he observed reckless flouting of the State’s building regulations to an unacceptable level, noting that the traders were lawless. He said each time people flouted the rules and refused to obey regulations, the effects were always greater in impact.

He said: “In the last one hour, I’ve gone round the streets within the market. From a non-professional assessment, it was clear that most of the buildings in the market are completely distressed. But, we will conduct a professional assessment on all the buildings to ascertain our findings. We will not sit back and listen to people doing as they like. Lives have been lost, properties destroyed and means of livelihood shattered.

“We have seen that there has been a lot of recklessness and carelessness on the part of the traders. Going round the market, I personally counted over 14 industrial generators placed on the fourth floor and fifth floor of some buildings. We saw unapproved structures built on original floors approved in certain buildings. I saw shops built next to electric transformers, which goes to show how traders have been careless with their lives.

“This is an opportunity for us to embark on complete regeneration of the whole area. We are sending messages to property owners and developers to come forward; we will be evaluating all the buildings in the market. Regenerating the trading space is going to be a tough decision for us but it is a proper step to take to preserve lives and properties. We will not shy away from taking this responsibility.”

Sanwo-Olu addressed the speculations about people missing and trapped at the fire site, noting that the emergency responders would remain on the site to comb through the debris for possible survivors.

The governor decried the fatalities recorded, stressing that the rescue team ordered occupants to leave the building while the fire spread.

He also said trading in unapproved areas made vehicular movement difficult in the market, which hindered the first responders from getting access to the scene on time.

“When the fire was raging, people were told to leave the building and the nearby buildings but some of them stayed back to salvage their goods at the risk of their lives,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor designated the site as “active site”, disclosing that emergency responders comprising the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), NEMA, police, Department of State Service, the Army, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) and Central Business District (CBD) Office would remain on the site to assist families seeking information.

Some families searching for missing persons were addressed by the Governor at the site. They sought the Governor’s help to get the emergency team to double its rescue effort.

The governor responded with an assurance of thorough search of the wreckage to rescue any victim that could be trapped.

He said the search team would ascertain the safety of its personnel before burrowing into the debris, as there were many unburnt flammable materials at the site that could potentially wreak havoc on the team.

For continuous emergency management at the scene, Sanwo-Olu directed that all shops and buildings within 100 metre radius of the fire site should remain shut until further notice, stressing that the area was still not safe for movement.

    Search ongoing –LASEMA

However, LASEMA, on Thursday said it had opened a Help Desk to address concerns regarding persons reportedly missing on the site.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency condoled with all those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident, and prayed that ”the Almighty give them the strength to bear this terrible loss.”

Oke-Osanyintolu said a Help Desk had been opened at the site for those whose relatives are believed to have been trapped in the building.

“The information provided will be verified, and documented for the compilation of a consolidated list of reported missing persons, which will aid rescue, recovery, and identification efforts.

“Emergency workers will continue to comb the site to ensure that nobody is left in the rubble.”

The LASEMA PS reiterated that the agency would continue to work closely with relevant emergency response, health, and security agencies, “to ensure a comprehensive and orderly operation. The Agency remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to provide timely updates to the public as developments unfold.”

He advised the members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency officials, and avoid the incident area to allow responders carry out their duties effectively.

Customs, NDLEA smash smuggling ring, seize 30.1kg cocaine in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa Area Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), have smashed  an international drug trafficking ring that specialised in bringing cocaine and other prohibited items into the country.

The joint enforcement which was carried out in Lagos, yesterday, led to the  interception of 30 slabs of cocaine weighing 30.1 kilograms concealed onboard the MV Aruna, a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, in Apapa port.

The seizure occurred on Friday, January 2, 2026; the first working day of the New Year at the Greenview Terminal within Apapa Port, Lagos.

The illicit substance was carefully hidden aboard the ship, underscoring the sophisticated tactics employed by smugglers attempting to exploit the nation’s busiest seaport.

The Area Controller of Apapa Command, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba commended the officers from both agencies for their vigilance and professionalism.

“This achievement reflects the strong inter-agency synergy between federal government entities and our commitment to intelligence-led enforcement,” he stated. “While criminal elements seek to outsmart us, our officers remain one step ahead, ensuring no smuggling attempt, whether disguised as import, export, or transit cargo, succeeds under my watch.”

Oshoba described the interception as a bold statement for 2026, reaffirming the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards illicit trade. In line with established protocols, the NDLEA has taken possession of the seized cocaine for further investigation and potential prosecution of those involved.

The latest bust marks the third major drug interception by the joint NCS-NDLEA team in recent weeks. Barely two weeks ago, the agencies seized 25.5kg of cocaine hidden in five bags aboard another vessel based on intelligence.

Also, on 11 December 2025; 1,187kg of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a premium and highly expensive strain of cannabis, packaged in 2,374 parcels across 55 bags and concealed within imported vehicles in a 1x40ft container.

The Area Controller reiterates that the Apapa Port Command remains steadfast in its mandate to facilitate legitimate trade while safeguarding national security.

  • FERMA unions accuse board chairman of gross abuse of public service rules

FERMA unions accuse board chairman of gross abuse of public service rules

A fresh labour crisis is brewing at the Federal roads maintenance Agency (FERMA) following serious allegations by two in-house unions accusing the agency’s governing board and elements of management of gross abuse of office, violation of Public Service Rules (PSR), and persistent interference in administrative processes.

The allegations are contained in a joint press statement issued by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), FERMA Branch, signed by their chairmen, Comrade Paul Onimisi and Comrade Abdulmumin Idris.

According to the unions, the crisis began barely weeks after the appointment of the board chairman, Dr. Musa Babayo whom they described as a part-time appointee. The unions allege that Dr. Babayo immediately began interfering in the day-to-day administration of the agency, functions they insist are exclusively reserved for management under the Public Service Rules.

They accused the board chairman of arm-twisting management officials, particularly the Human Resources Department, to apply “illegal and extraneous rules” outside the recommendations of a properly constituted Senior Staff Committee (SSC), especially in matters relating to recruitment and promotion.

READ ALSO; Guru Maharaj Ji predicts Tinubu, APC’s victory in 2027

The unions stated that the SSC had concluded and submitted recommendations on the controversial 2021 recruitment exercise, which were initially approved by the FERMA board. However, they alleged that the board later reversed itself verbally, allegedly to protect a select group of staff, despite lacking the authority to alter SSC decisions.

They further warned that continued interference could lead to the outright cancellation of the 2021 recruitment, which they claim was already conducted in violation of the approval granted by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.

Digging deeper, the unions accused the board chairman of attempting to retrospectively legitimise the recruitment by exerting influence through “back-channel engagements” within the Office of the Head of Service an action they described as a clear breach of the PSR.

Beyond recruitment, the unions accused the board of constituting what they described as “kangaroo committees” aimed at encroaching on executive, financial, and operational functions of management roles that are explicitly outside the board’s policy-oversight mandate.

They also alleged that affected staff were encouraged by the board to approach the National Industrial Court without first exhausting internal dispute-resolution mechanisms, contrary to PSR Section 2 (110201), which they insist should ordinarily attract immediate disciplinary action, including suspension.

The unions further warned that they would shut down FERMA if the governing board under the leadership of Dr. Musa Babayo refuses to ratify the 2025 promotion examinations as he threatened .They reaffirmed that the promotion process was strictly in line with established Public Service Rules, with full union participation to guarantee transparency and fairness.

Highlighting what they described as a culture of impunity within FERMA, the unions cited the case of a the Director Information and PR of the agency Hajia Maryam Sanusi, who allegedly violated PSR provisions on secondment and transfer of service, yet reportedly sat for promotion examinations in both FERMA and the Federal Ministry of Information.

They described the situation as emblematic of long-standing institutional abuse, noting that such an offence ordinarily attracts dismissal under the Public Service Rules but has allegedly been protected by successive administrations.

In a particularly grave allegation, the unions claimed that Dr. Babayo’s actions suggest a deliberate attempt to circumvent established rules for personal enrichment, allegedly to raise funds ahead of a future gubernatorial ambition in Bauchi State. They stressed that these claims remain allegations but insisted that the pattern of conduct raises serious ethical and governance concerns.

They also accused the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of appearing cowed by intimidation and threats allegedly emanating from the board chairman, thereby weakening efficiency of internal operations.

The unions maintained that these “brazen acts of interference” would be firmly resisted and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi to urgently intervene and call the board chairman, Dr Musa Babayo to orders

FERMA plays a critical role in the maintenance of federal roads across Nigeria. Stakeholders warn that escalating disputes over recruitment, promotions, and governance failures could disrupt operations, delay road maintenance projects, and erode public confidence in the agency.
