Ogun lawmaker Kashamu dumps PDP for APC

A member representing Ijebu North State Constituency and former Minority Whip of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Rasheed Kashamu, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing irreconcilable differences and deep divisions within the party at both state and national levels.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide announced Kashamu’s defection on the floor of the Assembly on Tuesday while reading a letter formally notifying the House of his resignation from the PDP and his decision to join the APC.

According to the Speaker, the lawmaker attributed his decision to persistent factional disputes at the national level and leadership tussles within the party in Ogun State.

In his letter, Kashamu said his defection was in line with the decision of his leaders and supporters in Ijebu North to align with progressive forces in the state and to support the policies and programmes of Governor Dapo Abiodun under the ISEYA Agenda, as well as the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He explained that after reviewing the unresolved crises rocking the PDP nationally and considering the mandate and support of his constituents in Ijebu North I, he resolved to move en masse with his supporters into the APC to strengthen the party and contribute to its success in the constituency.

Kashamu informed the House that he had officially joined the APC at his Oke-Sopen Ward in Ijebu-Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, alongside numerous supporters drawn from across the constituency.

His defection was formally acknowledged at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where his colleagues, led by the Speaker, welcomed him into the APC fold. His wife, uncle and other well-wishers were also present.

Meanwhile, the House also acknowledged a letter from Governor Dapo Abiodun requesting the confirmation of Mr. Abdul Najeem Olayinka as the new Auditor-General for Local Governments, following the retirement of the former Auditor-General, Mr. Lamidi Mulero.

The Speaker directed the nominee to appear before the House on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at 12 noon, and to submit 30 copies each of his curriculum vitae and other relevant credentials.

Carloha, FRSC urge motorists to end distracted driving

Carloha Nigeria, the assembler and franchise holder of Chery vehicles in Nigeria, has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to drive awareness during the 2025 Ember-Months Safety Campaign.

The FRSC has consistently championed road safety advocacy across Nigeria, especially during the Ember Months when accident rates tend to rise, mostly due to human factors.

This year’s campaign theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Driving: Stop Distracted Driving,” emphasises the importance of driver behaviour as the first line of defence against crashes.

As part of the collaboration, Carloha Nigeria is supporting the FRSC RS2 Headquarters, Lagos, with the donation of reflective jackets for improved officer visibility and information-packed flyers for public sensitisation throughout the campaign period.

Speaking on the initiative, Carloha General Manager, Marketing, Felix Mahan, said, “Our partnership with the FRSC underscores Carloha and Chery’s commitment to promoting safer roads and encouraging responsible driving habits, especially during the high-traffic end-of-year period.”

He added that although many Chery vehicles feature advanced safety technologies – including driver-assist systems, anti-collision and emergency brake assist, lane departure and distraction warnings, and multiple airbags – the company considers it essential to reinforce a culture of alertness, discipline, and personal responsibility among motorists.

Zonal Commanding Officer, RS2 Headquarters, Lagos, ACM Ann Oladayo, expressed appreciation for Carloha’s support.

“We are delighted to have Carloha and Chery partner with us on this year’s Ember-Months campaign. The reflective jackets and flyers will significantly enhance the visibility of our officers during public enlightenment activities and support our efforts to reduce road traffic crashes,” she said.

Oladayo encouraged other corporate organisations to emulate Carloha and Chery in backing initiatives that promote safer road use across Nigeria.

We’ll mobilise all military assets against insecurity, says Tinubu

…President tasks Army on professionalism, apolitical posture

…Sanwo-Olu, Musa, service chiefs, military icons attend COAS conference in Lagos

President Bola Tinubu on Monday vowed to deploy all military and security assets against terrorism, banditry and other heinous crimes threatening the peace of the country.

He made the promise at the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) annual conference held in Lagos.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, reassured of his government’s commitment to restore the country’s pride.

“We are primarily committed to the modernisation of the armed forces through improved training, modern equipment, and enhanced operational capacity to confront evolving threats.

He revealed that plans to acquire more mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, armored vehicles, and patrol vehicles were underway, adding that over 100 armoured fighting vehicles have been refurbished and

    returned to active service.

“These efforts reflect our clear commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness,” he said.

According to the President, the government was deepening partnerships with friendly nations to expand research, innovation and indigenous production aimed at ensuring a new reliance in defense and security.

Commending the military on the gains recorded in anti-terror war, Tinubu said, “The positive reports emerging from the various theaters of operations are encouraging and stand as testimony to your courage, resilience, and professionalism.

“The gains recorded through joint operations with sister services and other security agencies further underscore the power of unity of purpose in our collective resolve to safeguard the nation.

“The Nigerian Army must continue to uphold its apolitical posture and operate strictly within the framework of the constitution and the national security strategy,” he said.

Tinubu also praised the Army’s civil-military cooperation initiatives across the country, noting that it was a testament of the service’s understanding that security is also about winning hearts, restoring dignity, and improving the people’s quality of life.

He said that his administration would continue to provide the motivation, support, and resources required for the Nigerian Army to excel in its noble duty of defending the country’s territorial integrity.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noted the relationship between security and development, applauding the Army for preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity and safeguarding national unity.

“Today’s Nigerian Army operates in an era defined by complex and evolving threats -terrorism, insurgency, banditry, transnational crime and other non-traditional security challenges.

Addressing these threats requires intelligence-led operations, adaptability and robust inter-agency cooperation.

“Encouragingly, the Nigerian Army has continued to evolve in response to these realities. I have observed with pride the ongoing restructuring and modernisation of the Army, the introduction of new platforms, improved training doctrines and a renewed emphasis on professionalism. These efforts clearly reflect an institution that is deliberately repositioning itself to meet the demands of a modern, constitutionally guided force” he said, appreciating 81 Division of the Nigerian Army for contributing to the peace being enjoyed in Lagos.

Minister for Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) said the operational capacity of terrorist groups has been significantly degraded across multiple theatres, adding that the gains reflected the courage of troops, improved planning and execution, as well as the growing impact of coordinated operations conducted within a joint and multi-agency framework.

Musa said that the conference remained a vital strategic forum for the Nigerian Army to review its operational posture, assess its readiness and professionalism, and align its future direction with national security priorities.

“The importance of this conference cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the complex and evolving security environment confronting our nation. Nigeria continues to face a combination of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, transnational crime and other asymmetric threats that demand sustained strategic focus, clarity of purpose and adaptive leadership.

“Accordingly, the Ministry of Defence will continue to provide strategic direction, policy support and capability development to ensure that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain professional, responsive and future‑ready.

“The ministry will also strengthen institutional frameworks that promote accountability and effectiveness,” he said.

Musa commended the COAS, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu for his vast operational experience, particularly in the North-East, and for the leadership he continued to provide.

“However, experience alone is not enough; we must continually ask ourselves what more can be done differently to decisively defeat enemies of the state.

“We must evolve new strategies and remain proactive, innovative and resolute,” the minister said.

The COAS, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu said the conference provided an invaluable platform for strategic reflection, robust engagement and the exchange of ideas on how best to strengthen civil-military cooperation.

“The gathering will also help deepen inter-agency collaboration and enhance our collective response to security challenges confronting our nation,” he said.

Shaibu said that the Nigerian Army was deliberately transforming into a more professional, adaptive and technology-driven force, capable of effectively addressing both conventional and asymmetric threats.

“Each officer and soldier of the army is a critical stakeholder in this transformation. I am confident that, within a short period, Nigerians will increasingly feel the positive impact of these reforms on national security and stability.

“Therefore, I urge us to remain guided by patriotism, professionalism and a shared commitment to the peace, progress and prosperity of our dear country,” he said.

The COAS thanked President Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to the welfare, professionalism and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Shaibu said that Tinubu’s sustained support especially in the areas of personnel welfare, equipment modernisation, training and institutional reforms had significantly strengthened their capacity to respond to contemporary and emerging security challenges.

Highpoints of the event were the unveiling of a book on the life of service of the late COAS, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, and the handing over of cheques to five families of deceased soldiers.

The conference brought together serving and retired service chiefs including Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas; former COAS, Gen Ipoola Akinrinade and Gen Azubuike Ihejirika; ex-Minister, Gen Ike Nwachukwu; former CDS Alexander Ogomudia, Gabriel Olonisakin and Lucky Irabor; Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Olohundare Jimoh; Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, among others senior officers.

  • PDP crisis: Lamido rules out coalition, opts for alliance ahead of 2027

PDP crisis: Lamido rules out coalition, opts for alliance ahead of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has indicated plans to enter into an alliance with another political party yet to be announced ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The move was disclosed by a PDP stalwart and former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, while addressing party caucus members during a special meeting held at his residence.

Lamido clarified that the PDP was not pursuing a coalition but an alliance, which he described as a strategic decision aimed at strengthening the party’s chances in the next general elections.

He said he was fully aware of the concerns and anxieties among party members, noting that the prevailing situation within the PDP had compelled him to consult widely with key stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the party’s crisis.

“I have met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and other prominent leaders of the party. I appealed to them to set aside grievances and personal differences and focus on the survival of the PDP and the millions of members across the country who are worried and confused,” Lamido stated.

According to him, the resolution of the party’s crisis largely rests on the shoulders of four influential figures which are Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

“If they so wish, the PDP crisis can be resolved instantly,” he said.

Lamido assured that efforts were ongoing at the national level to address the challenges confronting the party and chart a way forward for members and supporters nationwide.

“At the national front, we are doing the needful to find solutions and a clear path forward for all members and supporters. Very soon, progress will be evident,” he added.

He also revealed that a crucial meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, December 17, 2025, which he described as a potentially final effort to resolve lingering differences within the party, urging members to remain patient.

Speaking on the party’s strategy in Jigawa State, Lamido described the planned alliance as a pragmatic approach to reviving the PDP’s electoral fortunes.

“In Jigawa, we have opted for an alliance going into 2027. Given the realities on ground, this is the most viable path to victory,” he said.

The former governor attributed the party’s internal challenges, particularly at the regional level, to leadership disputes and post-election disagreements, including contentious candidate selections that had deepened divisions.

“Some national decisions affected the states negatively and created cracks within the party, but we are now mending fences,” he explained.

Lamido, however, stressed that the success of the alliance would depend largely on the support and cooperation of grassroots members.

“Our members and supporters in Jigawa must remain calm, united and ready. They are the backbone of the PDP, and this alliance will strengthen their voice in 2027,” he urged.

He concluded by assuring party faithful that the moves were part of deliberate actions to reposition the PDP in Jigawa State and across the country, expressing optimism that national-level breakthroughs would soon reinforce state-level efforts.

  • Arewa youths to Malami: stop blaming presidency, EFCC, go to court if you are clean

Arewa youths to Malami: stop blaming presidency, EFCC, go to court if you are clean

The Arewa Youth Advocate for Equity and Justice has asked former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to stop blaming the presidency or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his current investigation.

The organisation asked the former AGF to go to court to prove his innocence.

While addressing reporters in Abuja, National President of the association, Sani Zangina, noted that it is on record that the detained SAN was granted administrative bail by the EFCC.

Zangina said, “As a seasoned legal practitioner and one who has attained the peak of the legal profession, it is expected that a SAN clearly understands the appropriate legal channels for seeking redress instead of resorting to public propaganda and emotional appeals for his release, rather than approaching a competent court of law, is not only unnecessary but also unbecoming of the revered status of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“Where there is any dissatisfaction with the conditions of such bail, or the need for its variation, the court remains the proper and lawful avenue for redress. Forgetting the way to court in such circumstances sends a wrong signal to the public and portrays a level of disrespect to the rule of law and the legal profession.

“This development should serve as a lesson to all Nigerians, particularly those who once wielded enormous institutional powers. Institutions that were previously answerable to certain offices and individuals must now be respected and allowed to carry out their lawful duties without intimidation or media pressure.

“The Arewa Youth Advocate for Equity and Justice wishes to clearly state that we are not in any way defending the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, nor are we apologists for any member of the former cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari. However, as consistent advocates of equity, justice, and due process, we strongly believe that the rule of law must prevail at all times.

“We therefore advise the detained SAN to immediately approach a court of competent jurisdiction to seek his freedom, if indeed he believes he is entitled to such relief. The court, and not the media space, remains the ultimate arbiter in matters of liberty and justice.”

  • Shared laboratories, shared futures: MOWAA’s continental push to strengthen conservation

Shared laboratories, shared futures: MOWAA’s continental push to strengthen conservation

When conservation laboratories are mentioned, the image that often comes to mind is that of sealed, high-tech rooms accessible only to experts in white coats.

At the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), however, the idea is deliberately different. From inception, its conservation laboratories were designed as shared spaces, open, collaborative environments where museum professionals from across Africa can learn, innovate and exchange knowledge beyond national borders.

Fully equipped to treat paintings, works on paper, textiles, metals, ceramics and mixed-media objects, the laboratories provide specialised services that many institutions in the region are yet unable to sustain independently. But beyond the equipment, MOWAA’s defining strength lies in its openness. Visiting conservators are encouraged to observe treatments, participate under supervision and acquire skills through hands-on immersion rather than distant instruction.

This philosophy of shared learning has also been extended to the public. Through Open Lab Sessions held in Lagos in partnership with Goethe-Institut Nigeria, audiences were offered a rare opportunity to witness the science of conservation in real time. For heritage professionals, the sessions underscored how conservation can serve as an educational platform, not merely a technical function.

The initiative is further reinforced by MOWAA’s early-career professional development programme, Unearth, an intensive eight-month course that combines laboratory rotations, structured training and group projects. Participants are required to apply their skills immediately, ensuring that learning translates into practice.

Across West Africa, collections remain under threat from humidity, fluctuating temperatures and biological deterioration.

MOWAA’s laboratories respond by enabling comparative testing, preventive conservation research and climate-adapted storage solutions that can be transferred to partner institutions. In effect, the facility operates not just as a museum department, but as a regional technical hub.

Beyond the treatment of individual objects, the conservation programme equips professionals with skills in documentation standards, object handling and movement, disaster preparedness, and the use of sustainable materials for storage and display. As trainees return to their home institutions, these competencies spread across the region.

The broader objective is both clear and ambitious: to reduce reliance on overseas conservation services by building strong, locally grounded expertise within Africa. By anchoring technical knowledge on the continent, MOWAA’s model makes conservation more resilient, cost-effective and responsive to regional realities.

As more professionals cycle through the laboratories, the impact continues to grow. Each trained conservator strengthens not only their institution, but the wider cultural ecosystem, from public museums and university archives to community heritage centres. The cumulative effect is a quieter but lasting stabilisation of collections that underpin historical research and public memory.

While the work may appear relevant only to a narrow circle of specialists, its wider implications are significant. Stronger conservation capacity increases confidence for international exhibitions to travel to Nigeria, safeguards the economic and cultural value of artworks, and supports the livelihoods of emerging professionals. Ultimately, it helps to secure the creative future of the communities these collections represent.

In essence, MOWAA’s laboratories are doing more than preserving objects. They are sustaining cultural economies, deepening public engagement with heritage and shaping a future in which Africa’s stories are protected by the continent’s own experts.

Earlier, Governor Ademola Adeleke in his address said the facility is first of its kind in Africa which must be protected and promoted.

He commended the philanthropic gesture of Alakija, saying the business mogul opened the vistas of opportunity by donating the all-in-one facility for the usage of everyone including global communities.

The donor, Alakija said she was driven by a vision to revolutionize healthcare in Nigeria, and following extensive consultations with reputable international medical experts, architects, and project engineers.
