PDP convention must not hold, court has spoken – Litigants warn

Litigants seeking to stop the planned PDP national convention have maintained that the event should not proceed, citing the recommendations of the Board of Trustees’ Reconciliation Committee.

The Secretary of the South-South zone of the party, alongside the Imo State Chairman and his counterpart, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja to raise concerns over what they described as undemocratic practices within the party.

According to the South-South Zonal Secretary, George Turna, many stakeholders believe that the processes leading to the convention violate the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, the PDP’s electoral guidelines, and the 1999 Constitution.

He noted that the conduct of state congresses remains a major issue, arguing that by the party’s procedures, congresses in most states — or at least a substantial number — should have been concluded to produce the bulk of delegates for the national convention.

“We looked forward to guidelines; none were issued. We expected a timetable; we couldn’t find any. We sought information on procedures, including the purchase of forms; nothing was made available.

“Out of these frustrations, we approached the court to seek answers. It is now public knowledge that we obtained judgment in our favour, delivered by Honourable Justice James of the Federal High Court on 31st October 2025.

“It is important to clarify, because false narratives have spread, that we acted as proxies to stop the PDP convention, or that we are undermining the party’s progress.

“In the buildup to this and following the judgment, the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) set up a fact-finding committee. The committee reviewed the crisis and produced a report. As party members, we had access to the report.

“I wish to draw your attention to a key point from the committee’s meeting with members of the NWC loyal to the suspended National Chairman, His Excellency Ambassador Iliya Damagum. According to the committee report, Damagum himself stated that the National Organizing Secretary was running a one-man show and had a hidden agenda that negatively affected state congresses.

“This confirms our earlier position that congresses were not properly conducted in at least 14 states. One wonders how a national convention could proceed while disenfranchising delegates from 14 states, including the South-East.

“The committee’s recommendations were clear. Instead of implementing these recommendations, the other group has jettisoned a report produced by a high-level BOT committee and insists on proceeding with a convention.

“But this report vindicates us — both the court and the BOT have affirmed that the issues we raised were legitimate, therefore, Nigerians must know the truth — who is on the side of the law, and who is on the side of impunity.

“In the final analysis, on behalf of millions of party members whose voices we represent, we call on the party leadership to respect the judgments of the Federal High Court in Abuja, the recommendations of the BOT report, the rule of law, the party must return to constitutional order, reconcile, and then organise a credible convention that meets legal standards.”

Speaking at the convention, he said, “Justice Omotosho’s earlier judgment is already before the Court of Appeal. Once a matter is before the appellate court, all parties must maintain the status quo. You cannot proceed with a convention. Furthermore, Justice Lifu’s judgment today on unlawful exclusion strengthens this. If they proceed, they will be acting in open violation of the law.

“No PDP convention can hold tomorrow or any other day, because the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary — the only officers empowered to issue notices — have already officially stated that there will be no convention anywhere in Nigeria. That is the lawful position.

“The matter is already before the Court of Appeal. We fully accept the BOT committee’s recommendations. If the other group rejects this golden opportunity for peace, we will proceed with the appeal. If they continue in defiance, the matter may go all the way to the Supreme Court. Eventually, the rule of law will prevail.”

Also speaking, Chairman of PDP in Imo state, Austin Nwachukwu, drew attention to the judgment of Justice Lifu, which also stopped the convention from going ahead.

He said, “This particular suit was filed by former Governor of Jigawa State, His Excellency Sule Lamido, who was denied the opportunity to obtain forms to contest at the planned convention. He was understandably upset, as a foundation member and elder statesman of the party.

“The court held that it was wrong and unjust to deny Sule Lamido the right to participate in a convention of this magnitude and ordered that he must be allowed to purchase forms and participate in any future convention. The court also cautioned the PDP to stop acts of impunity.

“This again vindicates our position. While some individuals rushed to Ibadan to obtain an ex parte order from a High Court, we followed due process and the rule of law — and the court has again justified our actions.

“We call on the new BOT Chairman, Honourable Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, and our Acting National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahaman, to implement the BOT report.

“The report did not come from us; it came from the BOT, the conscience of our party.

We urge the leadership to quickly implement the recommendations, which will address our concerns and restore order. Many members are frustrated because the party is in disarray.

We deserve commendation for having the courage to challenge illegality.

“We are guided strictly by the rule of law. The Federal High Court has ordered that we put our house in order. If we truly love the PDP, we must obey that order. We are ready to sit with anyone who respects the law. Political situations involve give-and-take. When we reach that bridge, we will cross it.”

Lokpobiri pledges government’s support for Renaissance Energy

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has commended the leadership and staff of Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited for driving the oil and gas output increase less than a year after the deal that saw the exit of Shell from onshore Nigeria.

A statement signed by Renaissance’s spokesperson, Michael Adande, said the $2.4bn deal resulted in Renaissance emerging as the operator of the biggest joint venture in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

The minister’s commendation came during his visit to the exhibition booth of Renaissance at the ongoing 43rd annual international conference of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) in Lagos.

Receiving the minister and NAPE leadership, Chairman of the Board of Renaissance, Dr. Layi Fatona, reiterated the company’s commitment to continuing on the trajectory of growth, which has ramped up the company’s production post the share sale deal by over 40 percent and restored uninterrupted gas supply to the Nigeria LNG plant.

“Renaissance, as operator of the joint venture, holds a portfolio spanning onshore and shallow-water terrains, as well as the Bonny and Forcados crude export terminals and the Sea Eagle FPSO. We are aware of just how much our nation needs us to succeed, and we remain focused,” Dr. Fatona said.

According to Dr. Fatona, Nigeria retains enormous strategic advantages in today’s energy world because the country holds world-class reserves, a young and dynamic population, entrepreneurial agility, and resilience to innovate forward.

“This is why, at Renaissance, we spend time with young talents, to help the upskilling of Nigeria’s youthful energy talent and help them appreciate the opportunities available to achieve incredible targets and join in industrialising our nation with our energy resources,” Dr. Fatona said.

We’ll reclaim every inch of territory occupied by terrorists – CAS

The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has assured that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will not relent but will reclaim every inch of territory occupied by terrorists.

He gave the assurance on Friday, during an operational visit to the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 2/213 Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Katsina, on Friday.

The NAF boss charged personnel to intensify efforts in fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to decisively eliminate all threats to the safety and security of Nigerians.

“We cannot relent for a moment. The nation is counting on us to restore peace and reclaim every inch of territory challenged by insurgents and criminals,” he said.

The CAS noted that Nigeria’s security environment has become increasingly complex, with ruthless non-state actors spreading violence and causing significant loss of innocent lives. He urged personnel to remain “agile, innovative, and ruthlessly precise” in confronting security threats.

He emphasised the unprecedented support the NAF has received from the federal government, including the acquisition of modern platforms, advanced weaponry, and enhanced professional training, which, he said, has placed a solemn responsibility on the Air Force.

The NAF boss commended the troops for their courage, precision, and professionalism in striking the adversaries despite the operational challenges in the region, assuring the total elimination of security threats in all parts of the country.

“We will not rest until every threat to our sovereignty is neutralised,” he said.

“Wherever they hide, whether in forests, valleys, or remote villages, our forces will find them, and we will strike with precision.

“Our mission is clear: to hunt them down and to protect our people.”

The CAS urged personnel to sustain the operational momentum and ensure that every mission reflects the NAF’s core values of discipline, service, and patriotism.

He assured that the welfare of personnel remains the NAF’s top priority, stressing that the fight against insecurity must go hand-in-hand with the well-being of personnel.

“A force that fights hard must also live well. Under my leadership, your welfare, training, and equipment will match your courage in the field.

“You are the nation’s shield, and your safety and morale are non-negotiable,” they said

The NAF boss said the service would continue to invest in modern capabilities, intelligence systems, and technology-driven operations to secure lasting dominance in the air and impact on the ground.

  • Wike warns FCT waste contractors, threatens contract revocation over poor sanitation

Wike warns FCT waste contractors, threatens contract revocation over poor sanitation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed solid waste management contractors in the territory to immediately improve the standard of sanitation across the Federal Capital City (FCC).

Wike warned that any contractor found failing in their responsibilities risks having their contract revoked.

He gave the directive in Abuja on Friday during an interactive meeting with the 54 contractors recently engaged to handle waste cleaning services in the FCC.

Addressing the gathering, the minister stressed the vital role of efficient waste management in maintaining the cleanliness and image of the FCT.

He announced the immediate establishment of a Task Force to closely monitor the activities of the contractors, noting that subsequent payments would depend strictly on satisfactory performance.

Wike said, “Management of waste is a very difficult job. So, I want to plead with you to see that you are carrying out an assignment for the development of our capital city.

“So please help us to keep the city clean. It’s a job that you applied for; nobody forced you. I assure you that your payment is not a problem. Do the job as required and do it very well. There will be no favouritism. Your job is what will speak for you, and you must get the job done”, the Minister stressed.

He warned that he will not hesitate to terminate the contract of any cleaning company if refuse is sighted in their allocated zone.

“This will not be business as usual. You must work during the weekend and have a special team to evacuate waste”, Wike directed.

He further mandated the Director of Procurement to carry out immediate checks to ascertain the capacity of companies allocated more than one operational site, stating that excuses related to bad equipment would no longer be accepted.

“Those who are given more than one slot, we have to know what capacity they have. If you are allocated two sites, we will not accept excuses for bad equipment. You cannot go and apply for jobs in two areas when you don’t have the capacity to deliver. We don’t want any area to be left behind. We want everywhere to be clean”, he stated.

Wike further urged residents to also provide feedback to the government on the contractors’ performance, assuring residents that their feedback matters in ensuring payments.

Responding to an appeal by the contractors for the payment of outstanding eight months’ arrears, the minister observed that some areas, particularly parts of Asokoro, were not serviced by the contractors for periods in the past.

He said the outstanding eight-month payments would be processed, but clarified that the payment would be done strictly on merit.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Mr. Felix Obuah, confirmed that 54 successful contractors were selected from over 500 applicants, adding that the companies have been duly issued letters of award and assigned different beats across the FCT.

Speaking on behalf of the contractors, Mr. Ibrahim Babayo, thanked the Minister for the audience and urged his colleagues to heed the warnings, while also pledging the contractors’ commitment to ensuring a clean FCT.

Recall the FCT Executive Committee meeting chaired by Wike last Friday approved the sum of N111,913,176 (One Hundred and Eleven Million, Nine Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, One Hundred and Seventy-Six Naira) for the execution of the contract.

Coordinator STDD, Hon Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, who disclosed this, said the Committee ratified the payment of a contract for the provision of emergency evacuation of waste from open dumps collection points, waterways, and streams in the Dogon Gada community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The new waste management regime will commence from Monday, November 17, 2025.

  • PDP crisis deepens as party’s leaders reject panel’s call to halt national convention

PDP crisis deepens as party’s leaders reject panel’s call to halt national convention

Despite the decision of the Ambassador Umar Damagum–led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership to proceed with Saturday’s national convention in Ibadan, the PDP Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, had recommended putting the planned convention on hold and constituting an all-inclusive Caretaker Committee to address all outstanding disputes.

At a stakeholders’ meeting on Thursday night, the National Convention Organising Committee, led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, dismissed the recommendation and declared that the Ibadan convention was sacrosanct and would go ahead as scheduled.

A report of the Reconciliation Committee, made available to journalists on Friday, accused three governors and other senior party figures of prioritising personal interests over the party’s unity, alleging that loyalty to individuals had overshadowed loyalty to the PDP.

The committee’s findings, submitted to the Board of Trustees chaired by Senator Adolphus Wabara, also detailed mutual accusations of betrayal between PDP governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with both sides alleging disregard for existing internal agreements.

The report was signed by Ambassador Hassan Adamu (North East) – Chairman; Chief Mike Oghiadomhe (South South) – Secretary; Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (South West); Senator Zaynab Kure (North Central); Dr. Lubna Gusau (North West); and Chief Ugochukwu Okeke (South East), who served as members.

The report said, “In the course of this assignment, we found out that friction, distrust, and lack of sincerity had festered for too long amongst the key players (Governors & NWC members), and the year 2027 became an issue with regard to who gets what. This affected the smooth running of the Party.

“Job descriptions were tempered within the NWC. The spirit of carrying each other along got affected. Camps became birthed within. Loyalties got shifted more to individuals than the Party. Litigation in courts across the strata got attended to, not with the speed and candour resulting in more crises”.

It recommended, “Going ahead with the convention at this time must be subject to favourable legal status and disposition of INEC. However, considering the multiple court orders and judgments, INEC is not likely to monitor the Convention.

“Accordingly, an all-inclusive Care Takers Committee (CTC) is recommended because a failed convention will incapacitate the tenability of the party to field candidates at all levels nationally. For this to be effected, all the NWC should revert to the status quo ante immediately.

“Suspension orders should be lifted and all parties brought together for genuine reconciliation. The BOT must be given its prime position to be able to mediate and guide processes within the Party. On her part, the BoT must be seen to be neutral.

“The constitution of the Party must be amended to accommodate some key issues. The intention to grant the Governors Forum status as an ORGAN of the party by constitutional amendment should not be done at this time.

“Above all, the Party constitution must be upheld always. Party supremacy and discipline are core. There is therefore the need for the BoT, NWC, Governors Forum, and all critical stakeholders to come together and resolve all these issues to allow for a successful hitch-free convention going forward.”

The Committee reported that it met with the FCT Minister, the PDP Governors Forum led by Senator Bala Mohammed, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the suspended members of the NWC (comprising Sen. Anyanwu (the National secretary), Bature (the organizing secretary), and Bar. Ajibade SAN (the National legal adviser), as well as former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in the course of their assignment.

It reported that “Wike questioned the reconciliation committee’s integrity and neutrality, citing its formation in a meeting attended by the Damagun-led NWC, while objecting to the BoT’s declaration supporting the Damagun-led NWC and the Oyo State High Court judgment, feeling it prejudiced his cooperation.

“Minister Wike suggested the BoT should have met without parties present and then invited both sides. He criticized the zoning committee’s process, alleging fundamental errors and exclusion from consultations.

“Minister Wike accused the Governors’ Forum, led by Gov. Bala and Seyi Makinde, of hijacking party processes and pursuing selfish agendas. He alleged some Governors, including Diri, Kefas Agbu, and Peter Mba, secretly collaborated with the ruling party.

“Minister Wike expressed discontent over cancelled congresses, particularly in South-South, South East, Anambra, and Ebonyi states. He insisted the convention would only proceed if the Abuja High Court orders are obeyed, threatening continued activism due to Governors’ non-compliance with agreements”.

On the meeting with the governor, the report said ‘Governor Bala Mohammed met with the committee, accompanied by Governors Muftwang and Makinde, who excused themselves due to other commitments. They assured that discussions would be binding on them.

“Governor Bala accused Minister Wike of betrayal, causing confusion, and disregarding the party constitution. He stated that the Governors’ Forum had fulfilled agreements, but Minister Wike insisted on absolute control. He alleged that Minister Wike aims to weaken and destroy the PDP.

“Governor Bala described Minister Wike as trouble-prone and unlikely to cease attacks on the party and its structures”.

On the meeting with the Damagun-led NWC, the report said the Deputy National Chairman, Amb. Arapaja represented Damagun, leading 10 NWC members, while 5 other NWC members sent apologies

The report explained that “the National Secretary and others were suspended due to anti-party activities, despite repeated warnings, and that the suspended members were accused of dealing with party matters in a high-handed and indisciplined manner.

“The NWC appreciated the Governors’ financial support, but noted that their competition for control contributed to the crisis. Suspended NWC members were accused of having ulterior motives and being influenced by Hon. Minister Wike.

“The National Organizing Secretary (NOS) was accused of running a one-man show and having a hidden agenda that negatively impacted state congresses. The NLA was accused of working against the party’s interest in legal issues.

“The NWC pledged to cooperate with the committee to achieve a peaceful resolution but expressed reservations about other factions’ willingness to embrace peace.”

It said the Meeting with National Secretary (NS), National Organizing Secretary (NOS), and National Legal Adviser (NLA) took place at the residence of the National Secretary

It said, “NS, NOS, and NLA appreciate the BOT Reconciliation Committee’s composition, but express unhappiness about the meeting setup with Damagun-led NWC present. They accuse some BOT members of contributing to issues in their states and zones.

“They accuse Damagun and his team of disobeying court orders. They allege Gov. Bala, Diri, and Makinde have hidden agendas, creating conflicts. They claim Chairman Damagun met with Governors without NWC input, agreeing to a National Convention.

“They criticise excluding Minister Wike from key decisions, like zoning national, zonal, and state offices, accuse the Chairman and Governors of not keeping agreements, while accusing the National Chairman and Publicity Secretary of running the party without consulting NWC members.

“They emphasise the legitimacy of Chief Ali Odefa’s suspension, citing a court judgment, insisting that NLA notes documents signed by Ali Odefa are illegal and letters to INEC must be signed by NC and NS, but this isn’t being followed.

“They accuse the National Chairman of terminating staff appointments and salaries, they claim the party didn’t meet the 21-day notice to INEC, making the National Convention shaky, and identify Gov. Makinde as a major crisis contributor and Damagun as incompetent.

“They provide evidence of conflicting directives from the National Chairman, while NOS states the National Convention process doesn’t follow the party constitution, and clarify the purported judgment doesn’t explicitly approve the convention.”

The report also contained an extract from. The meeting with former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who the report quoted as saying that he has never met President Tinubu, but sacrificed political partnerships for party peace, and was also said to have identified the issue of the National Secretary and a rancour-free National Convention as remaining unresolved due to Governors’ ego/selfishness.

Saraki was quoted to have said that the Governors agreed on a solution granting the structure in Rivers state to Wike, but reneged, pointing out that the agreement for state and zonal congresses collapsed after Amb. Damagun was confirmed National chairman.

Saraki also referred to infighting between Minister Wike, Govs. Fintiri, Bala, and Makinde, saying the governors made selfish, detrimental decisions, while expressing the fear that proceeding with the Ibadan Convention under the present circumstances will fracture the party irreparably.

Saraki was said to have recommended the formation of a caretaker executive committee inclusive of all stakeholders, while Governors. Makinde & Bala Mohammed should retreat and cooperate as the only way to avert destruction.

Saraki was also said to have warned of the consequences of allowing the crisis to linger, which include the eventual defection of first-term Governors of Osun, Plateau, and Zamfara, as they cannot contest second terms on a fractured party.

He also recommended that the Governors’ Forum should not be an organ of the party in any constitutional amendment, while the BoT must be impartial, upright, and inspire confidence.

Delegates from across the country have begun arriving in the city, with coaster buses deployed to convey them from their hotels to the venue. The convention is expected to draw governors, senators, House of Representatives members, and other top party officials.

Despite legal challenges, the Oyo State High Court has given the PDP the green light to proceed, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor and observe the exercise to ensure transparency and fairness. The ruling cleared the final hurdles to the party’s preparations.

However, controversy lingers as a faction led by Sam Anyanwu declared the convention postponed, citing internal disagreements. The Damagum-led national leadership has dismissed the claim, insisting the convention will hold as scheduled.

SGOF, states surveyors move to reclaim land administration from non-professionals

‎The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF), Surv. Abduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin and the Forum of States Surveyor General of Nigeria (FOSSGON) have taken a united stand to reposition the nation’s land administration, GIS systems, and mapping architecture, declaring that survey professionals, not non-technical actors, must take full control of Nigeria’s geospatial data.

‎During a meeting held on Friday at the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation in Abuja, Adebomehin called for a sweeping structural reform that would bring state Surveyors General into the federal decision-making framework.

‎Adebomehin disclosed that OSGOF is preparing critical submissions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the future of digital mapping, land management, and GIS.

‎He said the ongoing Abuja digital mapping, which has captured thousands of housing units already, proves the financial and developmental returns of geospatial investment.

‎He urged state surveyors to begin formal engagement with their governors ahead of a nationwide digital-twin mapping initiative.

‎He revealed that OSGOF has undergone advanced training with Chinese experts on digital-twin technologies that recognise African building types.

‎“We are ready for Abuja’s second-phase digital-twin mapping. Our next target is to map the entire country using aircraft. Nigeria must build its own capacity,” he said.

‎Surv. Duniya Magaji, Head of Geodesy at OSGOF, thanked FOSSGON for their continuous support, describing the growing federal–state synergy as vital for national development.

‎Also speaking, Surv. Charity Michael of the Federal Capital Development Authority hailed Adebomehin for building what she called a lasting professional legacy. She renewed calls for survey offices to be upgraded to extra-ministerial departments, including in the FCT, warning that non-survey professionals in GIS units continue to mishandle sensitive data.

‎“Land administration must remain in the hands of surveyors. What many states currently operate is not holistic GIS,” she insisted.

‎FOSSGON Chairman and Adamawa State Surveyor General, Surv. Pwavidon Simon led the delegation and praised the renewed national relevance of OSGOF under Adebomehin.

‎“We are here to celebrate your leadership and the confidence President Tinubu has placed in you. OSGOF is again shaping national policy, especially in infrastructure development,” he said.

‎Osun State Surveyor General, Surv. Soladoye Abioye congratulated Adebomehin on his tenure extension and OSGOF’s elevation to the Presidency.

‎Abioye appealed for the urgent restoration of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON), noting that its absence has halted professional examinations and weakened regulatory oversight. He also urged stronger collaboration between federal agencies and state survey offices to minimise boundary disputes.
