UCL: Jesus scores twice as Arsenal beat Inter Milan

Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Arsenal won at Inter Milan to maintain their 100% record in the Champions League and guarantee themselves a top-two finish in the league phase of the competition.

The Gunners were all but certain of a top-eight finish coming into this match and set their longest ever winning streak in the competition with an impressive seventh success.

They had Inter pinned back from the beginning before Jesus’ poked finish from close range put them ahead in the 10th minute.

Inter built up their own period of pressure after going behind and Petar Sucic levelled when he bent a powerful strike past David Raya from the edge of the area after Nicolo Barella’s initial effort was blocked.

But Arsenal, like they have so often done this season, regained the lead from a trademark set-piece in the 31st minute as Leandro Trossard headed Bukayo Saka’s deep corner back into the area and the unmarked Jesus nodded the ball in.

The Brazilian striker’s second goal was the 19th Arsenal have scored from corners this season – the most in Europe’s top five leagues.

Substitute Viktor Gyokeres made sure it was a comfortable end to the match when he curled in a great strike from the edge of the area for their third six minutes from time.

Along with missing the play-offs in February, the Gunners will also have home advantage in the second leg in the knockout phase.

    UCL: Tottenham beat 10-man Borussia Dortmund 2 – 0

Under-pressure Thomas Frank received a much-needed boost as an impressive first-half display saw Tottenham beat 10-man Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

It felt like Frank went into this game needing a win, with supporters having turned on him following the 2-1 home defeat by West Ham on Saturday.

But there was a different atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night as Spurs attacked with pace and purpose, and first-half goals from Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke saw off Dortmund.

The victory puts Frank’s side in a strong position to qualify automatically for the knockouts as they are fifth with one more fixture remaining.

The fans’ frustration was perhaps evident at kick-off with a number of empty seats in the upper tiers of the ground, but Tottenham’s encouraging start will have allayed fears that a fourth successive loss was on the cards.

The hosts deservedly took the lead when Romero turned in Wilson Odobert’s ball from the right, and they continued to create opportunities as Dortmund struggled with their high press.

It got even better for Tottenham when the visitors had Daniel Svensson sent off after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR) following his high-boot challenge on Odobert, who continued to be involved in the key moments with another assist for Spurs’ second.

He played a neat one-two with Pedro Porro before sending a low ball into the box, which bounced off Solanke’s heel and on to his other foot to deflect into the net.

Tottenham had nowhere near that level of intensity in the second half, though should have added a third when Randal Kolo Muani raced through but fired straight at goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Guglielmo Vicario then tipped over Nico Schlotterbeck’s header in stoppage time to ensure it was not a nervous end to the game for the home fans.

UCL: Bodo/Glimt stun Man City to claim first win over English side

Norwegian debutants Bodo/Glimt claimed one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history by stunning Premier League Manchester City 3-1 in the cold of the Arctic Circle.

Played on an artificial surface, Pep Guardiola’s youngsters froze in the -9C temperatures as City suffered another embarrassing loss following Saturday’s derby defeat by Manchester United.

Glimt thoroughly deserved their victory, having taken a shock lead in the 22nd minute as Ole Didrik Blomberg’s looping cross to the back post was headed in by Kasper Hogh.

City were all over the place defensively and young defender Max Alleyne, who was culpable for the first goal by running to the halfway line but failing to intercept a pass, then miscontrolled the ball in his own half just two minutes later.

It proved costly, allowing the hosts to double their lead as Blomberg again cut the ball across the box for Hogh to convert a fine first-time finish.

Hogh could have had a third for the rampant Glimt before the half-hour mark when he slid in at the far post but his effort on the stretch was smothered on the line by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The usually prolific Erling Haaland has hit a sticky patch of form and his recent performances were summed up shortly before half-time when a chance fell to him eight yards out but he could not find the target with his strike.

In the second half, Jens Petter Hauge’s sensational solo effort, curling brilliantly into the top corner, put Kjetil Knutsen’s side in dreamland and while Rayan Cherki pulled a goal back, City were then reduced to 10 men as Rodri was sent off for two bookable offences.

There was no way back for City thereafter and they will require a victory against Galatasaray in the final group phase game to secure a top-eight place, while Glimt kept alive their hopes of reaching the play-off round.

An Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan on Tuesday summoned the medical doctor in Agodi Custodian centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service to appear before it tomorrow (Wednesday) over a matter that bothers on the health status of a former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURYW) in Oyo State, Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi also known as Auxiliary.

The hearing of the case involving Auxiliary was stalled on Tuesday due to his absence when the case came up in Court.

It was gathered although the former Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Oyo State Park Management System (PMS) was earlier in Court, he could not attend his session due to alleged health related issues.

The Nation reports that the matter was adjourned to January 20 and 21 by the trial Judge, Justice Adetujoye, Presiding over Court 11, Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan.

It was gathered that the Defendant had arrived the court earlier, looking fine and okay as other cases were been heard.

The court rose for a few minutes before Auxiliary’s case was to come up.

However, while waiting for the court to resume, things took a different turn as it was noticed that the Correctional Centre officers who brought him in the morning and some people gathered around him with snippets filtering around that the former PMS boss was not feeling too well.

A source, who was privy to the incident, told The Nation: “The matter was slated for 11AM but after some court sessions, the Court rose and came back around 12pm. However, before the Judge would resume into the session, we noticed that the Correctional Centre officers who brought him in the morning and some people gathered around him and we heard them saying Auxiliary is not feeling too well.

“Some people were pouring water on his head while some others were applying ‘aboniki’ balm on his legs. What we noticed was that, after some time, the Correctional Centre officers called their boss at Agodi, they brought their vehicle and he was assisted by officials of Correctional service, his children and friends and he was taken out of the court.

“But, what we were told was that, when he got outside, he actually walked with his legs to the car. It was shocking.”

It was further gathered temper rose when the Judge came into the court and Defence (Auxiliary’s) Counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN said he learnt that Auxiliary was sick.

Surprised, the Judge was said to have asked the Prosecutor if they were aware of the development.

Those who appeared for the State were O.S Tella, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, O.A Bolarinwa Senior State Counsel and F.F Gbadamosi.

Responding, the Lead Prosecutor, O.S. Tella told the Judge what she knew about the whole incident that transpired in the open court.

The situation angered the Presiding judge who said even if they would take him (Auxiliary) out of the court, he was supposed to be told.

The Court insisted that even if at all he (Auxiliary) was sick, one of the officials of the NCoS should have come to inform him of the real position of things.

In their separate submissions before the court, the State Counsel and Defence Counsel could not give a tangible explanation of what actually happened, further angering the judge.

Ruling, the Court adjourned the matter till tomorrow (Wednesday), noting that, by then the true situation about his health status would have been ascertained.

The Court said if the Defendant was confirmed to be sick, the Court would pick another date for hearing of the matter.

  • We know those who won’t fly PDP flag in 2027 – Turaki

We know those who won’t fly PDP flag in 2027 – Turaki

Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, said the party knows those who will not be allowed to fly its flag as presidential candidate in the 2027 Presidential election.

Turaki also reaffirmed the decision to zone to the presidential ticket of the party to the southern part of the country but was quick to say that “we don’t know who our candidate will be, but we know those who will not be”.

Turaki, who was speaking with newsmen after a meeting with former Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo at his Abuja residence on Tuesday evening, said the former number two citizen reaffirmed his membership of the PDP, saying “we are happy that those who keep the party to success are still with us”.

He said: “We came to introduce the newly elected members of the National Working Committee to him. Those that were elected in our last National Elective Convention that took place in Ibadan.

READ ALSO; Jubilations as Alaafin moves to ancient palace

“Those who came with us also included members of the Board of Trustees and the chairman of the BOT himself. Founding fathers and mothers, members of the National Assembly, state chairmen, former ministers, former governors, former members of the National Assembly, and indeed other major party stakeholders across the country.

“We met with His Excellency and we’ve had a very, very useful discussion with him. We told him the prospects and the challenges we’ve been facing since our election in Ibadan and generously proffered advice and guidance on the way to forward as winning platform for Nigerians.

“But the most important thing for us this evening is the assurance that His Excellency gave us that he is and will continue to remain a member of the PDP and that very soon, he will become more active than he used to be.

“He assured us that should there be anything at any time that requires attention, that we should not hesitate to run to him and he will be up and doing and will be there for us. So, we are happy that our leaders, those who are behind the successes that PDP had achieved in this country, are with us and they are going to remain with us.

“We will continue to tell Nigerians and indeed members of the PDP that your party is the biggest and greatest party in Africa. Your party is on the move again. And very soon, we shall come back to our winning days. Very soon, we will position our party to win all elections that are going to be conducted in this country, beginning with the FCT area council elections, the Ekiti and Osun off-season elections. So I want to assure us that we are on course”.

Responding to questions on the party position regarding the Federal High Court Judgement dismissing the case filed by the immediate past National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Turaki said: “It is a vindication for us in the PDP family.

“We’ve said times and times again that the decision of the Supreme Court is sacrosanct. That our courts have no business meddling into matters that are purely political party matters.

“The judgment of Justice Umar today has vindicated us in PDP that, yes, we are the genuine leaders of PDP, that, yes, our convention was legitimately done, that people cannot just go in one corner and then begin to ascribe to themselves the leadership of a political party. This is not a market association, neither is it an association of shoe-shiners. This is a political party, and there must be discipline”.

On whether former President Jonathan will be contesting the 2027 elections, he said: “You see, like I’ve always said, we in PDP have taken a decision to zone our presidential ticket to southern part of this country. For now, we do not know who may emerge as our candidate, even though we know those who will not be our candidates.

“So it’s open for every member of PDP that is living in southern Nigeria or southern Nigeria descent. The process is going to be open, it’s going to be transparent, it’s going to be fair, it’s going to be equitable, and it’s going to create level playground for everybody.

“So if, for whatever reason, anybody wants to contest, we want to assure you, Nigerians, that you will be the deciders of who becomes your candidate.”

Fed Govt opens bilingual school in Kano

The Federal Government, in partnership with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), has launched a new bilingual school in Kano State, a move the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, described as a “practical investment in human capital development, social inclusion, and regional stability.”

The initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to expand access to quality, inclusive, and future-oriented education, particularly for communities needing targeted interventions.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Kiru local government area of Kano state, Professor Ahmad emphasised the importance of bilingual education in strengthening foundational learning, improving communication, preserving cultural identity, and enhancing global competitiveness.

She noted that the school will allow students to gain both Islamic and conventional knowledge, empowering them to access wider resources and participate confidently in their communities.

The project is a key component of the $98 million Bilingual Education Project (BEP) funded by the IsDB, which will see 30 new schools built across nine states, including Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, and Osun.

Kano State has four of the model schools, located at Doguwa, Ganduje, Ungoggo and Kiru which was commissioned on Tuesday.

Each school has the capacity to accommodate over 1,000 students and is equipped with comprehensive facilities, including administrative and academic blocks, hostels, a multipurpose and dining hall, staff quarters, a vocational skills centre, a mosque, perimeter fencing, a water project, and other essential amenities.

The Minister commended the IsDB for its commitment to education development in Nigeria and across the Islamic world, and praised the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for its coordination.

Professor Ahmad urged the school management, education authorities, and the host community to take ownership of the new facility to ensure it is not a wasted investment.

She also called for the provision of proper ventilation, in-person laboratories, and learner-centered teaching to ensure the school delivers a valuable impact for its students, whom she called “the true beneficiaries of this investment.”

Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajiya Aisha Garba, said the bilingual schools were conceived to integrate English and Arabic literacy with modern pedagogy, Technical and Vocational Education, ICT-driven learning, and safe boarding facilities.

“These schools embody our shared commitment to expanding equitable access to quality basic education for all children, especially those who are out-of-school or vulnerable within our communities,” she said.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Kano, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, who represented Governor Abba Yusuf at the ceremony, thanked the federal government, UBEC and IsDB, saying the investment will open doors of opportunities, knowledge and national goals.

  • FG to partner Niger State on tourism development

FG to partner Niger State on tourism development

The Federal Government has promised to partner Niger State government to develop it’s tourism potentials in order to contribute to the economic development of the state and the country in general.

The Minister of Art Culture Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa gave the assurance when she received a delegation from Niger State led by the member representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha federal Constituency of Niger State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sa’idu Musa Abdullahi in her office on Tuesday.

The lawmaker who was accompanied by the General Manager Niger State Tourism Cooperation, Hajiya Zainab Mohammed informed the minister that, they paid the visit in order to discuss the tourism potentials of Niger State which he said was enormous and can drive it’s economic development drive in line with President Tinubu’s economic transformation agenda.

He said, “I am from Bida, I represent three local governments. Bida is the headquarters of all the Nupe speaking people across the globe and we have very very rich culture, you know, to the extent that today I think Bida is the first UNESCO city for crafts and art forms, you know, in all of the country.

“So we feel we’re not doing much in terms of giving our culture the visibility that it requires. We are who we are, we can’t change who we are and for people to identify and appreciate who we are, we must make our culture very very visible. We identify with everything that this ministry under the leadership of the Honourable Minister is doing.

There’s this advert on television, you know, anytime I see you on it I always get very elated because this you could see the Nigerian-ness, you could see the passion with which you made the presentation. So what we have to do, especially some of us are privileged to be in position of representation, we need to come up with collaborative efforts in order to make your job a lot easier.

“Yours is to be able to showcase our culture, what we have to offer other people and but you can’t be everywhere, that’s the whole essence of having some of us in different locations. So we have come to present this opportunity of collaboration, of showcasing the rich Inupiaq culture and how we do it, twice a year we do the Bariki festival.

“Before you came in, I was talking about the history of the Bariki itself. It started long before independence, during the colonial masters, it’s more like a homage paying to the colonial masters on the 5th of Sallah, the traditional institution when the people goes to meet the colonial masters to pay homage and even after independence.

“It’s a tradition that has been carried through up to date. So we said it’s been done almost same way right from time immemorial. So we want to give it a different face, we want to do it differently and I want to make it an international festival and I take inspiration from what I see in Ogun State.

What I saw was so colourful and I said what we have in Bida, you know, I’m sure it’s even richer in terms of the length of history but it has not been approached from the way they approach that and I said if we’re able to do that, there are so many things that the country will gain from it. Economic benefits will come, it will create employment opportunities for people, it will create wealth for our people because that’s another angle to boost tourism, and I said okay, it can be talks, talks and talks, let’s be able to walk our talks and it’s one of the reasons why we’re here this morning, to present this opportunity of collaboration.

“I know how passionate my governor can be but with you on the project, we own it more than if it’s us discussing with him, if you see this is a collaboration between Federal Ministry of Culture and my office and the tourism board, I’m sure it will be something that he will want to be a part of, so we have come to seek for that collaboration with the ministry.

“I assure you it’s something that when we get into and we do it the way we want to do it, you will of course be grateful for having this opportunity, so I think she may want to say one or two things, it’s our call, you know, yeah, she’s the technocrat, I’m a politician”.

Responding, the Minister of Art Culture Tourism and the Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa appreciated the Niger State delegation for the visit and emphasised on the need for collaboration with Niger State which she said has visible tourism potentials that can be developed.

She said, “I think you’ve already said everything that has to be said, you know, of course I’ve discussed with you, I’ve discussed with the team, you know, we’re working to partner with the state governments and of course Niger State is one of those, especially when you think about all the different assets that Niger State has to offer in terms of tourism and of course the proximity as well.

“Zuma rock just down the road is another, that’s another area that, you know, we have interest in seeing how we can continue to enhance and amplify as a tourist attraction purely because of the proximity and of course that is Niger State, right? So I think we’re working on a project, one of the initiatives is called the New Renewed Hope Cultural Renaissance Project, it’s the president’s vision of partnering with the federal and state government just in your own vision.

“We’ve already signed agreements or MOUs with some states, you know, we, I don’t, I can’t see us finishing all the 36 states, however there are some key states, I think, in terms of culture and in terms of every, every state has culture, every state has tourism, right? But I think there are some key states, advantage of proximity, Niger State and what you do have to offer.

“I think Niger State is one of those that we will hope to prioritise in this, in the next few weeks, I would say, if I speak to His Excellency, to see if we can come and sign that MOU and I think under that MOU, because that would now form the partnership that the ministry will continue to have with the state government beyond each and every one of us, right? Yes, being in office.

“I think these are some of the projects that can be used to flesh out that specific MOU and, you know, we can start working on this. I will talk, like I said, with His Excellency to see, or rather, Abu, you can speak with the commissioner to see if we can have a date and you’ll talk to our team as well, that we can come and cover Niger State and then, you know, we’ll be quite deliberate in talking about the specific projects such as, you know, the Hawan Sallah, the Hawan Bariki and, of course, some of these tourism potentials.

“So, I think we can, I think that this one is a given. I think we can do that immediately. So, I think you will arrange that so that we can do it next week. If you can reach out to the governor, if he can have us next week”.
