“Mr Ibu, as John was popularly known, was not just an actor, but Nollywood ambassador that used his talent and humour to promote peace, happiness and unity among Africans.

“I signed John in 2004, and then our relationship grew beyond that of business to become that of friendship as we have become so close till his death.

“The deal started with first two years, and I did not  bother him with the aspects of Nigerian movies,  so  he  could deal with anyone on Nigerian  movies.

“But for anything   concerning   international  showbiz, I have to discuss with the promoters on the basic access requirements and then we would move.”

Nwuzor  reminisced that   “There was no airport , especially in Africa, where  crowd of fans would not gather John, and that was how I realized his popularity outside the shores of Nigeria.

“I can tell you that he was even more celebrated in countries like Ghana, South Africa ,Kenya, Tanzania,Gambia, Garbon, Botswana  and he always held the Nigerian flag showing his love  for his country,” he said.

“When we went to Botswana, he held the Nigerian flag when we landed to show that he is from Nigeria because they were hearing a lot of negative things about Nigeria then.

“Even a little child in Ghana  knows Mr Ibu  , and one thing about him was  his friendliness and  originality, as  everything he does is just himself and  does not  copy  anyone.

“I remember vividly, how two warring tribes in Ghana came together for the first time because of John’s performance and he ended up reconciling them.

“He was thereafter given a Chieftaincy title as the ‘Malangula I of Tamale Land’, meaning the peacemaker, and I was named the Ngulala, meaning the mouthpiece of the peacemaker.

“He was a man I would say made Africans laugh and was held in high esteem like a people’s leader across Africa”, Nwuzor said.

The DSI helmsman, who described the passing of Mr Ibu as the end of an era, however urged teeming young talents to embrace mentorship and training to go far with their craft.

According to him, Nigeria has vast and talented youths, with many struggling to find platforms to showcase their creativity due to systemic barriers, limited infrastructure and economic challenges.

He said as a foremost showbiz and  personality promoter  and artist management firm in Nigeria,  Don Single International is  set to unveil DSI Movies to provide a platform for talented youths to pursue careers in the Nigerian film industry.

We will support Olubadan as Oyo Obas council chairman, Olugbon assures Makinde

…says empires have given way to new global power structures

The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has assured Governor Seyi Makinde that members of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs will give enough support to the new chairman, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

The monarch gave the assurance while hosting the governor in his palace at Orile-Igbon over the weekend.

Some other traditional rulers in Surulere Local Government joined the Olugbon to welcome Makinde to the palace.

Oba Alao, who thanked the governor for the visit, assured that he and other members of the council of obas were behind Makinde, assuring that Oba Ladoja would enjoy the support of members of the council across the five zones in the state.

The zones are Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun, and Ibarapa.

The monarch, who is the deputy chairman of the Obas council, said, “Your Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, we appreciate you for coming here. And I would like to take this opportunity to explain that the government has done what is needed by the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. We are in support of the decision.

“Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs has now been re-inaugurated. And we have a new chairman in the person of His Excellency Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadan.

“I want to assure Your Excellency that we are all one in the council. We are united across the five zones – Ogbomoso, Ibadan, Oyo, Oke-Ogun, and Ibarapa. People can say things, but we are members of one united family.”

Responding, the governor said, “I came here over what happened in Oloka. I have visited there, and I assured them that their government will not fail them. The people own this government. I am also assuring the people of Surulere Local Government and everyone in Ogbomoso Zone that development projects will spread across all five local governments in Ogbomoso Zone. I only ask for your cooperation.”

The traditional rulers that joined the Olugbon were the Aresapa of Iresa pupa, Oba Moses Ajiboye; Aranyin of Iranyin, Oba Lasisi Olagbemileke; Olujado of Ijado, Oba Hammed Adegbile, and Iba Abogunde Tajudeen Aminullahi.

Speaking briefly with reporters after the meeting, Olugbon stressed the need for the traditional system to embrace contemporary reality, saying empires have given way to new power structures globally.

He said, “The world is not static but dynamic in nature. In the past centuries, there were the Roman, French, and British empires, which ruled the world. But looking at today’s world order, the United States, Russia, and emerging China are the leading powerful nations.

The system we are operating in Nigeria is not a monarchy. I implore all traditional rulers across the state to cooperate with the government of the day.

“There is no perfection in the decisions of the government. We just need a deeper understanding of our collective will in entrenching good governance, promoting economic development, security, and peaceful coexistence in our dear state. Modernity has restructured the governance system in Nigeria.”

The Nation reports that Makinde re-inaugurated the council of Obas last week, Thursday, with the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Ladoja, as its chairman. He will serve a tenure of two years.

Before Thursday’s inauguration, the council had been held down by litigation for 15 years.

  • Amotekun arrests three suspected herdsmen for alleged plot to kill employer in Ondo

Amotekun arrests three suspected herdsmen for alleged plot to kill employer in Ondo

…debunks influx of bandits in Akure

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, have arrested three suspected herdsmen for allegedly attempting to kill their employer after slaughtering 10 of his cows in Idoani, Ose Local Government Area.

The suspects — identified as Ibrahim (40), Yunusa (30), and Abdukadri (25) — were apprehended following a report lodged with the security outfit.

Parading the suspects over the weekend alongside others arrested statewide, Amotekun Commander Adetunji Adeleye disclosed that 32 individuals were taken into custody for various offences.

He said the arrests stemmed from intensified intelligence-led operations, particularly in response to the increasing influx of young, unemployed men from the northern part of the country into Ondo State.

Adeleye explained that among the 32 suspects, 12 were picked up for disturbances, three for violating the anti-grazing law, and 17 in connection with kidnap-related activities. He said the trio from Idoani are accused of plotting to kill their ‘Fulani boss’ after roasting 10 of his cows.

He also raised concern over rising banditry in the Akoko axis, noting that two suspects — Pius (23) and John (35) — were arrested while allegedly attempting to collect ransom from the family of a kidnapped victim. Other accomplices remain at large.

Adeleye further dismissed a viral social media report claiming that bandits had invaded Akure, describing it as misinformation.

“Bandits did not enter Akure. What actually happened was that 42 people were discovered hiding inside a bitumen truck loaded with bitumen. Investigation and profiling of these individuals have commenced

“We are working with other security agencies to ensure that those without genuine reasons for coming into the state are returned to their states of origin,” he said.

Adeleye further disclosed that four suspects – Elura, Alilu, Adamu, and Kamal, aged between 24 and 29 — were arrested around Ile-Oluji and Ondo town for alleged involvement in criminal activities.

He added that in the Akin Camp and Odigbo axis, Mohamed Abubakar, Abdulahi, Yakubu (aged between 22 and 35) and Abba Aliu (29) were arrested, noting that one of them had previously escaped from lawful custody after being arrested for a kidnap-related offence but was later re-arrested.

“The victims involved in the kidnapping incident were successfully rescued,” he said.

The Amotekun Commander added that three suspects were arrested in the Agbogbo area of Akure for possession of items they could not reasonably explain, while four others were apprehended at a nearby garage for conspiracy, assault, and breach of public peace.

He said Abdulahi, Kada, and Useni were also arrested for conspiracy, stealing, and anti-grazing-related offences in the Elegbeka Reserve Forest and Ifon, while one Friday (43) was arrested for breaking and stealing.

According to Adeleye, Yayah Abba was arrested for allegedly stealing motorcycles and water pumps in collaboration with Masadi and Abubakar.

He, however, reassured residents that the state remains peaceful, stressing that sustained security operations have continued to reduce criminal activities.

  • 2027: Ondo APC elders back Tinubu’s second term, launch health drive for elderly

2027: Ondo APC elders back Tinubu’s second term, launch health drive for elderly

Elders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have declared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the most suitable leader to pilot the affairs of Nigeria beyond 2027, citing his experience, reform agenda, and commitment to national development.

The APC elders, under the aegis of the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum, made the declaration in Akure during a free medical outreach programme organised for elderly residents of the state in support of President Tinubu’s re-election.

Speaking on behalf of the group, the chairman of the Ondo APC Mandate Elders Forum, Chief Erastus Akeju, said President Tinubu has demonstrated the capacity, courage, and political will required to address Nigeria’s longstanding socio-economic challenges.

Akeju noted that although some of the reforms introduced at the early stage of the administration came with initial hardships, they are already laying a solid foundation for sustainable economic growth.

“Our major focus is the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, we know that health is wealth, and many of our elders need medical attention. That is why we decided to integrate healthcare into our meetings,” he said.

According to him, President Tinubu remains the best option for Nigeria at this critical period because of his bold decision-making style.

“It is obvious that President Tinubu is the very best to lead Nigeria at this time. We need a leader who can make difficult decisions, take risks, and stand by his words. Only a few leaders can initiate the kind of reforms he has embarked upon.

“He has even taken decisions that could jeopardise his political career, but because he has the interest of Nigerians at heart, he chose the path of sacrifice. We are nearing a precipice, and someone has to rock the boat to rescue the nation. That is exactly what President Tinubu has done,” Akeju said.

He called on Nigerians to exercise patience and continue supporting the administration, stressing that the benefits of the reforms would soon translate into improved living conditions for citizens.

As part of activities marking the endorsement, the APC elders commenced a free medical outreach targeted at elderly people across parts of Ondo State.

The medical outreach, sponsored by Dr Tunji-Ojo, provided free healthcare services, including screening and treatment for diabetes and hypertension, laboratory investigations, Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests, and free distribution of essential drugs

Addressing the gathering, Chief Akeju described the outreach as a practical demonstration of the impact of President Tinubu’s leadership, delivered through the interventions of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

He also urged the elders to convert their appreciation into political mobilisation.

“The dividends of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership are being felt directly by our people through our son, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Physically, materially, politically, and now health-wise, the impact is clear. Continuity is therefore non-negotiable.

“Every elder here must be a mobiliser in their community. Get your PVCs ready. Talk to your children and neighbours. A government that remembers the elderly deserves a second term,” he added.

A guest lecturer at the event and Consultant Geriatrician at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Dr Joy Eloho-Orji, spoke on ageing and cognitive health, explaining that gradual memory loss, reduced attention span, and impaired judgement are often linked to age-related cognitive decline.

“Ageing comes with challenges, but many of them are manageable. Adequate water intake, regular medical check-ups, and quality sleep are essential for maintaining good cognitive and physical health,” she said.

The facilitator of the programme, Hon. Ademola Ijabiyi, described the outreach as part of a consistent pattern of people-oriented leadership by Dr Tunji-Ojo, noting that the Minister has remained connected to the grassroots despite his national assignment.

“From regular engagements with elders to job creation, infrastructural support, and now free healthcare, Dr Tunji-Ojo has shown that governance is about service,” he said.

In his remarks, the Secretary of the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum, Chief Ebenezer Alabi, emphasised the need for party consolidation ahead of future elections.

“Beyond today’s programme, we must strengthen our party from the grassroots. The ongoing APC e-registration exercise is critical, and we urge all elders and party faithful to register and update their details. A strong party structure guarantees victory,” he said.

NPS attack: Makinde announces N5m compensation, scholarships to victims’ families

    …says three suspects in custody

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has announced a compensation of N5 million each to the families of the five Forest Guards killed recently at the Old Oyo National Park.

He also awarded scholarships up to the university level to the children of the deceased guards.

This is as the government confirmed the arrest of three suspects with links to the attack that shattered the peace of the Park earlier in the month.

The governor spoke when he paid an on-the-spot assessment to the scene of the incident at Oloka Village, Oriire Local Government Area, Ogbomoso.

Additionally, he promised to rehabilitate the road leading to the Oloka community from Ikoyi-Ile under the Rural Access and Agricultural Market Project (RAAMP) for easy movement, ensure improved telecommunication service and also install boreholes as well as solar-powered street lights in the community.

The governor also said the state would put up a sustained joint security effort for the people of the community.

Governor Makinde, who commiserated with the people of the community and the affected families, assured residents of the state that his administration would redouble its efforts to strengthen the security architecture of the state and make living in the community easy for them.

He also said that he would write a letter to the military authorities in Abuja, requesting the establishment of a military base in Oloka to further strengthen security in the community.

He noted, however, that the issue of security is a collective responsibility and not the business of government alone, urging the residents of the state to always tip off the government and the security agencies when they notice any suspicious activity in their communities.

The governor commended the service commanders for their support, dedication, and commitment to securing the lives and properties of the people.

He said, “I thank every one of you in Oloka and pray that we won’t experience such an event again. I want to say that whatever is expected of the government to do to ensure you are all safe and secure, we will do it.

“It is quite unfortunate, and I pray that God will uphold the families left behind by those who were killed.

“The reason I decided to come by myself is for me to see the environment and the challenges our security agencies might be facing. One of them is communication. I want to assure you that we will pay for the telecommunication companies to come and install masts here.

“For the bandits and those causing problems here, we will ensure that you feel the presence of our fortified security from now on.

“For the families that lost their loved ones to the unfortunate incident, each of them will be given N5 Million. They should send their representatives to us on Monday. For those who left children among the deceased, I will sign a scholarship for their children up to the university level.

“We are working very hard with our service commanders to ensure we put every necessary thing in place as a touching clearance operation in the Old Oyo National Park. We will redouble our efforts.”

The governor later led the people to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the deceased.

Earlier in his remark, the Special Adviser to Oyo State Governor on Security, CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd), hinted that three key suspects involved in the killing of the five National Forest Guards have been arrested and are currently undergoing further investigation.

Owoseni said, “Your Excellency has been briefed adequately on the nature of the incident, but as you have always done, Sir, you chose to come to see for yourself exactly what happened.

“As we are here today, I can tell you, Sir, that three key suspects directly involved in that incident have been arrested, and our security commanders are working on them.

“The security commanders will live up to Your Excellency’s words that bandits will not be given a space to operate in Oyo State.”

He commended the governor for his dedication and support to the security operatives in the state, assuring him that the security agencies would not relent in ensuring the security of lives and properties in the state.

Adewole hails Akande at 87, describes ex-Osun governor as pillar of Nigeria’s democratic history

Former Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has paid tribute to 87-year-old Chief Adebisi Akande, describing him as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

In a statement, Adewole said the former Osun State governor remains “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West.”

He noted that despite humble beginnings, Akande rose through public service with discipline, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

Adewole recalled Akande’s tenure as governor of Osun State, highlighting his prudent management of resources, modest lifestyle, and exemplary accountability.

He said Akande demonstrated that leadership is defined by sacrifice, service, and legacy rather than personal comfort.

As Secretary of the Akande Foundation, Adewole described the elder statesman as a “bridge between generations,” noting his central role in shaping progressive politics in Nigeria—from the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and later the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“His style of leadership—frank, principled, and consistent—has earned him both respect and admiration across political, ethnic, and religious lines. He is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear, or favour. In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande has remained a symbol of conviction.”

The ambassador-designate stated that at 87, Chief Akande is “a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty, and hard work, a statesman whose name is synonymous with loyalty, courage, and service.

‘As we honour Chief Adebisi Akande at this remarkable milestone, we pray that God Almighty will continue to grant him good health, peace of mind, and strength. May his remaining years be filled with joy, and may the ideals he has stood for continue to inspire leaders today and generations yet unborn.

“Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you.”

2027: Media entrepreneur Oriyomi Hamzat declares governorship bid in Oyo

Ibadan-based media entrepreneur Oriyomi Hamzat has formally entered the 2027 governorship race in Oyo State.

Hamzat announced his ambition over the weekend at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan, where a crowd of about 8,000 supporters from the state’s 33 local government areas gathered for the declaration.

The sea of yellow attire at the venue signalled his alignment with the Accord Party (AP), under which he will be contesting.

The Executive Chairman of Agidigbo FM described his decision to run as a direct response to persistent calls from the people, stating that his entry into the race reflects their demands for new leadership.

He said, “I have accepted the call of the people to serve Oyo State. This is not a step I have taken lightly. My vision is to implement programmes that will improve the lives of ordinary citizens, provide opportunities for youth and women, and ensure that governance in Oyo State goes beyond rhetoric to real, measurable impact.

“The people deserve leaders who listen, act, and deliver, and that is the promise I am making today.”

Addressing circulating rumours that he might hand over his support to another aspirant, Hamzat said, “Let me be clear: the ‘Oyo Npe oo’ movement has officially merged with Accord, and I am committed to pursuing this governorship dream myself.

“This is about giving a voice to the voiceless, standing up for the ordinary people, and working tirelessly to bring about a governance system that is accountable, transparent, and responsive. We cannot continue with business as usual. Oyo State deserves better, and together, we will make that change a reality.”

The accord national chairman, Barr. Maxwell, who was at the event alongside state Chairmen of the party from the Southwest, also presented Hamzat with his party membership card, symbolising his formal induction into the party.

He said the party has taken an important step towards ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the people, adding that Hamzat’s decision to join Accord is a tremendous boost for the party.

He said, “Dr Oriyomi Hamzat’s decision to join Accord is a tremendous boost for the party. His dedication to public service and his record of philanthropy make him an ideal candidate for leadership in Oyo State.

“Today, we take an important step towards ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the people. This is about leadership that listens, leadership that delivers, and leadership that puts the welfare of citizens first.”

In his address, the Governor of Osun State, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by his Commissioner for Political Affairs, Hon Biyi Odunlade, expressed full support for Hamzat’s candidacy.

He said, “We recognise Dr Oriyomi Hamzat as a leader who embodies integrity, vision, and a commitment to the people. Osun and Oyo Accord will work together to ensure that our ideals reach every corner of the Southwest.”

“We are fully behind Dr Hamzat, not just as a candidate, but as a symbol of what good governance should represent: fairness, opportunity, and tangible development for all citizens.”

Earlier, Secretary of the “Oyo Npe Oo movement, Dr. Olanrewaju Oladejo, described Hamzat’s entry into the race as a statement of principle.

“Dr Hamzat’s decision is more than politics. It is a moral declaration that governance can still be decent, humane, and people-centred. In joining Accord, he is signalling that leadership should prioritise service over self-interest, compassion over politics, and integrity over expediency,” he said.

Meanwhile, the declaration was marked by a mass defection of political leaders from all 33 local governments and 351 wards across Oyo State to Accord, signalling a surge of support for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

  • Group warns NJC, FJSC on petitions over Judges appointment

Group warns NJC, FJSC on petitions over Judges appointment

The Africa Centre For Good Governance And Corruption Free Communities has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Federal Judicial Service (FJSC) to to be mindful of what it described as the conspiracy and frivolous petitions against nominees for the appointment of  judges to Federal High Court.

The group, in a statement, Sunday, told the judicial bodies to investigate how some petitions against the nominees leaked to the public.

According to the Convener of the group,

Temitope Olubunmi Joseph, the NJC should invoke it’s rules on leaked petitions by discarding them.

He said such petitions should not be considered having being leaked to the media.

The group said it is in possession of the petition written against Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Blessing Nkechi Ezeala, who was accused of compromise in the discharge of her duties, asking why it was leaked to the media, if it was not for conspiracy purpose.

The group said: “Our organisation is in possession of the petition against Blessing Nkechi Ezeala and we can confidently confirm that the petition against Blessing Nkechi Ezeala was leaked to the media with an already prepared news report on Sunday, December 28, 2025 at about 3pm.

“Again, at this point, may we ask, what is motive of the petitioner by leaking the petition to the media. We would have thought that since the petition had been submitted to the relevant judicial bodies and individuals, the petitioner would have left it there and allow them to take a look at it and consider it one way or the other.

“We challenge the petitioner to prove some the allegations contained in the petition”.

He said the NJC, the FJSC and other relevant judicial bodies should bear in mind that once members of the public are called upon to make comments and observations about an individual for an exalted position, such as was done by the FJSC, all manner of allegations will be flying, true and untrue.

He said thorough investigations should be conducted on petitions submitted against nominees to ascertain those with genuine case amd those that are frivolous.

“We make bold to say that the sole aim of leaking the petitions was to paint CSP Nkechi Blessing Ezeala and others black in the eyes of the members of the public.

“A move our organisation condemn in its  entirety and we call on the the NJC and other bodies in line with its National Judicial Policy and Judicial Discipline Regulations of Nigeria to discard the petition against CSP Nkechi Blessing Ezeala, and others, having been leaked to the public.

“Our organisation has reliably gathered that some very powerful forces have ganged up and are bent on stopping CSP Blessing Nkechi Ezeala, from being appointed to the position of a Judge of the Federal Republic of Nigeria based on enforcement of judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory over a property in Wuse, Abuja, for which the Petitioner grossly violated the Order of Court by forcefully regaining possession of the property after he was evicted by the Court, which led to his lawful arrest by the Police.

“The petitioner failed to show that the CSP compromised in the discharge of her duty or that the investigation conducted by the Inspector General of Police into the case found her culpable. If the FJSC considered the Petition, would it not have asked for the Police investigation report on the case? Adopting the leaked Petition and allegations of the petitioner, without thorough investigation, clearly supports the theory of grand conspiracy against the CSP,” he also said.

Based on the National Judicial Policy and Judicial Discipline Regulations of Nigeria, the National Judicial Council (NJC) generally will not look into or will discontinue a petition that has been leaked to the public or discussed in the media.

The NJC policy emphasises strict confidentiality to protect the integrity of the judiciary and the reputation of judicial officers against frivolous or malicious complaints.

“The NJC, the FJSC, and other relevant judicial bodies should particularly, be concerned and careful in considering the petitions made against nominees because not only are the petitions full of falsehood against the nominees, they were also deliberately leaked to the public, particularly, the media to tarnish and stop the process for the appointment of some of the nominees.

“From our investigation, since the FJSC published the names of the nominees and called for public comments,  and observations on the nominees, many interested Nigerians and organisations have filed petitions to the NJC, FJSC and other relevant bodies.

“Our organisation was able to lay our hands on one of such petitions to the FJSC, NJC and other judicial bodies, which was filed against a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Blessing Nkechi Ezeala.

“In the petition dated September 22, 2025, signed by Sanni Abass Esq., on behalf of his client, one Alhaji Abubakar Yahaya, CSP Blessing Nkechi Ezeala, whom from our investigation has been a very dutiful officer, who carries out her duties without fear or favour, was said to have compromised in the discharge of her duty.

“Like we observed earlier, the petitions are full of lies and was deliberately leaked to the public and the media to paint CSP Blessing Nkechi Ezeala and other nominees with similar petitions in bad light,” the group emphasised.

Manchester Derby: Carrick faces baptism of fire against Guardiola’s matadors

Manchester United’s new interim boss Michael Carrick faces the hottest baptism of fire possible this afternoon, as his side lock horns with bitter rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in the 198th   instalment of the Manchester derby.

Supporters from both sides will be hoping for a more eventful Premier League showdown this time around, after a painfully dull 0-0 draw was played out in their last encounter on the red side of Manchester in April last year.

Eight days after the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Man United announced the appointment of former captain Michael Carrick as interim head coach on a deal until the end of the season. This will be the 44-year-old’s second stint in the Old Trafford hot seat following his three-game spell in November/December 2021 (W2 D1).

Carrick returns to the dugout seven months after his dismissal from Middlesbrough, where he won 46.3% of his 136 games in charge, and has taken over a Man United side who currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, only three points behind the top four despite winning just one of their last six matches (W1 D4 L1).

Three disappointing top-flight score draws with Wolves, Leeds and Burnley were followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup third round last weekend – Darren Fletcher’s final game as interim boss – with elimination confirming that Man United will play just 40 matches this season, making it their shortest campaign since 1914-15.

Making an immediate impact in back-to-back clashes with Man City and leaders Arsenal could prove challenging for Carrick. Against the former, Man United lost the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium by a 3-0 score line in September; they last failed to score in both league meetings with the Citizens in 1973-74, a season that saw them relegated from the top division.

Man United have also failed to score in four of their last five Premier League home encounters with Man City, including the last two in a row; they have not endured a three-game goal drought on home soil against the Citizens since a run of four between December 1911 and September 1914.

Man City’s response to kick-starting 2026 with three frustrating Premier League draws was to annihilate Exeter City by a 10-1 score line in the FA Cup third round last weekend, before securing an important 2-0 first-leg win away against EFL Cup holders Newcastle United in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

January signing Antoine Semenyo has seamlessly slotted into Pep Guardiola’s side following his £64m transfer from Bournemouth, scoring two goals and producing two man-of-the-match displays in as many games to move the Citizens one step closer to securing domestic silverware this term.

Man City boast a 13-game unbeaten run across all competitions (W10 D3) and have not lost any of their last nine in the Premier League during this period (W6 D3). Despite this strong form, the Citizens still face an uphill battle to cut the six-point deficit to leaders and title rivals Arsenal with 17 fixtures remaining.

Guardiola, currently the longest serving Premier League manager (nine years, 199 days), is gearing up for his 31st Manchester derby as City boss. Only against Liverpool and Tottenham (10 each) has the Catalan lost more games against a single opponent in his managerial career than he has against Man United (nine).

Nevertheless, Citizens supporters can take comfort from the fact that Man City have won more Premier League away matches against Man United than any other visiting team (nine), while only Liverpool (41) have scored more goals at Old Trafford than the Sky Blues (37).
