  • Auxiliary blames Fed Govt for persistent attack on UI

A Chieftain of Oyo State National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi (a.k.a.  Auxiliary), has attributed the attack by armed robbers, who invaded the University of Ibadan’s (UI) students hostel on Sunday to insensitivity of the Federal Government to state of insecurity in the country.

Auxiliary, who stated this in his Sallah message to both Muslims and Christians, however, sympathised with the affected students and pray Almighty Allah to heal their wounds.

The NURTW chief described the attack as an embarrassment to the nation and a reflection of how insensitive the Federal Government was to lives and properties of even students.

He said: “I am disturbed and badly embarrassed hearing the news of another attack within the spate of two months on UI students’ hostel by some gunmen suspected to be armed robbers. So, even schools are no longer safe for our children again in Nigeria. Where do the government expect us to move our children to or how do they expect good learning under such volatile environment?

“Since the first attack on these innocent students (Awolowo Hall) of this great institution in July, this year, in a sane environment, one would have expected the Federal Government to beef up security around the institution and carry out a serious and meaningful investigation to fish out the criminals among the residents of the institution.

“We should not forget that UI is a town on its own, and that compounded the work of the institution’s security department; hence the urgent needs to engage the services of competent security agencies like Department of Security Services (DSS) and Military Intelligence Agency to tackle the criminals.”

Auxiliary called on the state governor to assist the institution to tackle its deteriorating state of insecurity by granting it the needed support.

  • Ekiti workers seek payment of promotion benefits

Public workers in Ekiti State have called on Governor Kayode Fayemi to fast-track the implementation of financial benefits attached to their promotions.

The workers, who were owed three years promotion benefits for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, berated the action of the immediate past governor, Ayodele Fayose, for effecting their promotions without financial benefits.

The workers, under the aegis of Joint Public Service Negotiation Council (JNC), described the immediate past administration as administration without conscience and insensitive to workers’ welfare.

The council, in a statement co-signed by the chairman, Comrade Fatomiluyi Kayode and Secretary Comrade Gbenga Olowoyo, expressed confidence in the present administration, urging Fayemi to address the financial benefits among other issues affecting the welfare of the workers.

“As a matter of fact, the entire public servants are conscious of Fayemi-led administration’s readiness to clear all the outstanding salaries within one year of his term in the office, which he has repeatedly said at different fora,” the body said.

  • Makinde’s, Ajimobi’s rift deepens over ‘missing’ govt vehicles

The rift over government vehicles allegedly taken away by former Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s aides deepened on Monday as Governor Seyi Makinde accused his predecessor of distorting facts on the issue.

Addressing reporters after observing Eid prayers in Ibadan, the state capital on Sunday, Ajimobi faulted Makinde’s claims that his aides went away with government’s vehicles.

He explained that those who went away with government’s vehicles paid for them according to laid down procedure, adding that it was the standard practice.

Ajimobi said it was a needless move to rubbish his administration.

His words: “If we are talking about vehicles, I think papers have been written. When you are in government, there are policies to be taken. There are decisions taken. We’ve taken the decisions that anybody using vehicles at that time should pay and take it away. And that was what we did. Go to every state and even the Federal Government, there is nowhere in the world that people will work and not take away their vehicles when they are leaving.

“So, let them go and check many of those people in government, the civil servants. When I moved into the Government House, Agodi, I didn’t see any furniture. They took the whole curtains, furniture, chairs, tables, televisions, home appliances up till the last table spoon. Ask Governor Seyi Makinde if they took anything from the Government House, when he got there. But you know why? It was because I worked up till the last day in office.

“But Akala left few days before I came. So, the civil servants cleared everything. So, all those buses they are showing on the television that they met in the mechanic workshop and the rest, who took them to the mechanic workshop if not civil servants? That is what they do and let someone not come and rubbish us.”

Makinde, who replied yesterday through his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Taiwo Adisa, said Ajimobi misrepresented facts as regards the vehicles carted away by his former aides.

The statement reads: “There should be no ambiguity about this issue of missing or stolen cars.

“The alarm raised by the government of Seyi Makinde on the unprecedented looting of official vehicles has nothing to do with cars that were legally sold or boarded to the different officials of the past administration.

“The vehicles we are concerned about are official cars carted away without legal instruments.

“Contrary to the statement of former Governor Ajimobi, many of the vehicles carted away illegally are new and in working conditions.

“You cannot possibly classify a vehicle procured in February of this year as an old car just a few months after it was purchased.”

It added that the government has no issue with vehicles properly boarded by past officials.

The statement stressed that the illegally taken away vehicles were not paid for by those involved.

“That is why a number of the vehicles have so far been retrieved.

“We must put on record that taking away government property is really a sad development in the annals of public accountability.

“This government frowns at any attempt to justify illegality. The government has sworn to always do what is right and so cannot ignore such misrepresentations.

“The first thing to say is that many of the vehicles were not boarded by officials of the past administration, but were taken away without payment.

“There is nowhere in the public service that a governor is allowed to gift public property to cronies like a Santa Claus.

“If the former governor claims that it happens elsewhere, that cannot be a justification. This government is determined to ensure that every kobo of taxpayers will be accounted for.

“We also restate our commitment to ensuring that all the vehicles illegally taken away are recovered,” the statement added.

  • Lawmaker promises better life for constituents

The House of Representatives member representing Badagry in Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has urged his constituents in Badagry to imbibe the spirit of love, tolerance and mutual respect.

The lawmaker said these virtues are needed to further develop the coastal town.

Hunpe said: “I’m aware of the sufferings of my constituents. I have promised to address these issues one after the other.

“I implore Badagry residents to imbibe the spirit of love, tolerance and mutual respect because these virtues are the panacea for moving the coastal town forward.

He urged Muslims to uphold their obedience to Allah by forgiving one another.

Hunpe described Islam as a religion that upholds the spirit of love, peace and charity, as well as preaches harmonious living with the faithful of other religions.

He advised Muslims to expand the spiritual benefits of Sallah by ensuring and promoting peaceful co-existence with one another.

  • Ex-NYSC DG hails re-establishment of area offices

A former Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Maharazu Ismail Tsiga (retd), on Monday hailed the incumbent NYSC boss, Brig.-Gen. Shaibu Ibrahim, for re-establishing area offices for the scheme.

He said the scheme’s workers would benefit immensely from it.

Tsiga spoke when the Katsina State NYSC Coordinator Ahidjo Yahaya paid him a Sallah homage during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration in his home town of Tsiga.

The former director general stressed that he was happy when he heard that the new administration had revisited the formation or the re-establishment of area offices.

He described the move as the best step in the right direction.

The ex-DG expressed disappointment about the earlier decision to disband the area offices, saying he fought hard to establish them but that they were cancelled after he left office.

Tsiga said: “We struggled for the establishment of the area offices to create room for more promotions to enable the workers get to the peak of their career before retirement and not to punish anybody, as speculated by some people.”

He called for more sustainable synergy among NYSC workers to further strengthen the scheme.

The former director general and his grand-children jointly received their visitors in the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

He thanked Ahidjo for the visit and advised him to be thankful to the Almighty God for being selected and posted to a leadership position in the state NYSC.

Tsiga maintained that leadership was not what an individual gets but what the leader has is able to achieve to affect the future of the workers of his organisation.

The ex-DG advised Ahidjo to work closely with the workers, if he wants to succeed.

  • International Youth Day: Gbajabiamila seeks transformation of educational system

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has urged government at all levels to find effective means to transform the Nigerian educational system to strengthen the capacity of the nation’s youths.

In a message commemorating the International Youth Day with the theme: Transforming Education, Gbajabiamila said the essence of education is to proffer solutions to challenges confronting humanity.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (SA) on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, the Speaker noted that government at all levels have the primary responsibility of ensuring that every Nigerian is given access to basic and qualitative education.

He added that democracy and good governance would thrive in an atmosphere where a sizeable portion of the populace is educated and well enlightened about their civic responsibilities.

Assuring that the Ninth House of Representatives under his leadership would prioritise education matters, Gbajabiamila emphasised that revamping the sector had become imperative.

The Speaker, in 2016 during his tenure as the House Majority Leader, sponsored a Bill to provide access to higher education for Nigerians through interest-free loans.

The Bill, which has been reintroduced in the Assembly and passed through first reading, proposes a Nigeria Education Bank, which will be established by law to provide education for all Nigerians without any discrimination.

He said: “As we celebrate the International Youth Day, I intend to use the office of the Speaker and the instrumentality of the law to fast-track the passage of this and others Bills that are capable of restoring hope to our youths to reposition them for the tasks of nation-building and global competitiveness.

“It is indisputable that the global economy is knowledge-driven, while the private sector has continued to play a leading and pivotal role in the economic development of states and nations.

“This is why we need to transform the Nigerian Educational System and why the youth should be encouraged to broaden their skills.”

  • Presidency silent on alleged deployment of Ita Enang

The Presidency on Monday declined to comment on the alleged report that the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, has been relieved of his appointment.

Until the latest report, Enang, like several other aides of the President, continued with his appointment in the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration without renewal.

Senator Babajide Omoworare, from Osun State, is said to have replaced Enang as presidential aide to the Senate.

It was also claimed that Enang has been redeployed to a ministry as SSA to the President.

But no government official was willing to confirm the latest report last night.

Contacted, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, was in a better position to speak on the matter.

But several calls put through to the SGF were not answered yesterday.

There was also no return call from the SGF last night.

  • PDP mixing fiction with facts, says BMO

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has run out of ideas and is now pushing out unverified claims while mixing facts with outright fiction, the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has said.

The organisation said it was obvious in the manner the party and its presidential candidate in the last election, Atiku Abubakar, were recycling old reports to take a swipe at the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

In a statement by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO said there was nothing in PDP’s recent claims of capital flight from Nigeria.

“Like a drowning man, the PDP has not ceased clutching at straw, and that is exactly what it was doing in its attempt to cast the Buhari administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in bad light.

“The latest is the PDP’s bid to capitalise on a report issued by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) just after the 2019 elections as proof that Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) are on a decline on President Buhari’s watch.

“But in the rush to put out what they considered as a good line of attack, PDP leaders were either too lazy or too overzealous to realise that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had shot down the UNCTAD investment report on Nigeria with facts and figures, several months ago.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the report by the UN body centred on the 2018 financial period during which it claimed there was a decrease of over 40 per cent in FDI inflows. However, available records at CBN showed a significant increase in foreign investments at the time.

“In fact, the total capital inflows in 2018 stood at $19.07 billion, out of which FDI accounted for $7.78 billion, which is clearly more than what the report cited by PDP shows.

“Also, capital inflow into the country in the first five months of 2019 is $14.2 billion, out of which FDI accounted for $2.87 billion, or 20.18 per cent of the total amount,” BMO added.

  • TRCN to NYSC: stop posting non-education graduates to teach

The Registrar and Chief Executive of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof Segun Ajiboye, on Monday said the council had written to the Director General of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) to stop posting graduates without education degrees to teach in schools.

Ajiboye noted that most of those posted to teach during the mandatory one-year scheme do not have qualifications to teach.

The TRCN chief executive said the education system get bastardised when persons without requisite professional skills are deployed to teach.

He added that there are challenges of having qualified teachers in some states of the federation.

Ajiboye addressed reporters in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Transforming Education, the theme for this year’s International Youth Day.

The TRCN chief said majority of those teaching in private nursery and primary schools nationwide do not have the qualifications to do the job well.

He emphasised that those qualified must still be registered, professionally certified and licensed by the council.

According to him, only qualified and well trained and re-trained teachers can bring about a transformed education that the Nigerian youth can benefit from.

Ajiboye said: “We have written a letter to the NYSC Director General that only those who read Education should be posted to schools during their service year. This will ensure that only round pegs are deployed to round holes.

“Why are doctors not posted to teach? Why are Education graduates not deployed to hospitals to operate the sick? If you cannot allow a teacher to treat you in the hospital, why should you allow a fake teacher to teach your children and destroy their future? We should not debase the teaching profession.

“Governors must also ensure that they train and re-train those in their schools. Human capital development must be taken seriously to transform our education system.”

  • President mourns ex-Ambassador Olorunfemi

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with the family, friends, relations, as well as the diplomatic community on the death of a former Ambassador to Namibia, Dr Biodun Nathaniel Olorunfemi.

The President, according to a statement by his Special Adviser (SA) on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, said the demise of “the re-engineering technocrat” is a great loss to Nigeria.

He said the departed had the unique record of successfully turning around many corporations and businesses that were hitherto underperforming.
