  • Fed Govt begins repair of Seme road

The Federal Government has started repairing the Agbara-Seme Border section of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The repair is being done by CGC Nigeria Ltd, which is reconstructing the road.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the work has reduced the gridlock on the Oko-Afo and Mowo axis of the road.

The firm’s spokesman, Yunus Oloolu, said the work started on July 31 following the government’s directive.

“From Magbon, the company will move down to Ajibade in Badagry; then, we will repair other potholes and ensure the road is passable.

“Nobody is happy with the hardship people go through daily on the road.

“But now that we have the approval of the government, in the next two months, motorists plying the road will be happy,” Oloolu said.

He said massive reconstruction and repair were ongoing around Agemowo.

The spokesman said the company would soon complete construction of drainage network of 4.7 kilometres on the Agemowo-Mowo Road after the sand filling.

“Our workers are working daily, including Saturdays and Sundays, hoping to complete the reconstruction at the agreed time,” he said.

  • Children get free care at health centres

The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with a non-government organisation (NGO), BOSKOH Lagos Health Care Mission International (HMI), has begun a free medical intervention programme.

The programme, which started on August 2, is aimed at combating organ impairment and life-threatening ailments in children aged 0-12.

It will hold at seven Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs).

Children with visual and hearing impairments and other life-threatening ailments, which can negatively impact their capacity to study, will be screened.

The Medical Officer of Health, Akerele Primary Health Centre (PHC), Dr. Rahmat Odesesan, said the exercise would increase patronage of health care services at the PHCs.

“This exercise is meant to create awareness for residents, because many of them are not aware of the services the PHCs offer.

“We have the health personnel available to cater for their needs. So, people should take advantage of this free exercise to access health care at the facility.

“Residents will be screened and anyone in need of medical attention will be treated.

“Also, those who need referral will be referred to the designated general hospitals for treatment, which will also be taken care of by the government,” she said.

Services offered at the programme, Odesesan said, included: eye screening and free glasses for those in need.

Others, she said, were dental checks, free laboratory tests, test for tuberculosis and general check-up.

“We are encouraging residents to take advantage of this programme, because it is free. It is an opportunity for people to know their status and get treatment,” the medical officer of health said.

A beneficiary, Mrs. Abosede Awolesi, said the programme was well organised and the processes were smooth.

“I came very early thinking the programme might take long, but I was impressed that the doctors attended to my children promptly,” Awolesi said.

A student, Miss Arinola Amodu, urged the government to make health care accessible to people at the grassroots.

  • Indecent advert: Tekno arrested, granted bail on health grounds

Music star Augustine Kelechi alias Tekno was Tuesday arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for breaching public decency with an outdoor advertising displaying semi-nude women.

He was quizzed for several hours at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti, Yaba before being granted administrative bail on health grounds.

Tekno came under fire last week after a mobile advertisement displayed scantily dressed girls dancing seductively in a transparent glass box on a truck while he sprayed money on them along the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.

Although the singer issued a public apology explaining that it was not an advert but a scene in a video he was currently shooting, the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) suspended the advertising firm, Pro-Vision Media Systems Limited whose van was used.

  • Presidency, DSS, activists clash over planned protests

What is treason?  That was the question as the Presidency and the Directorate of State Services (DSS) spoke on the planned “#RevolutionNow” protests billed to begin today in 21 cities.

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka said nothing in the plan of Omoyele Sowore, the leader of the protests, suggested that he planned a forceful takeover of the government.

To him, expressions, such as “treason”, “arnarchist” and “public incitment”, are alarmist.

The reasons given for Sowore’s arrest, said Soyinka, are “untenable”.

The protests’ planners were yesterday warned that nothing of such would be allowed anywhere in the country.

Flashing the yellow card, Department of State Services (DSS) spokesman Peter Afunanya also confirmed that the arrowhead of the #RevolutionNow and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) Sowore is in the agency’s custody.

The DSS spoke even as the Presidency yesterday cautioned the protesters that a revolution cannot be the best option of changing a government.

It reminded them that elections remain the most appropriate option to change a government in a democratic setting.

Reacting to the scheduled “revolution” march scheduled for today, the Presidency, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, warned the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria to weigh the consequences of its actions.

The statement reads: “Following calls circulating on social and digital media, an organisation that calls itself the ‘Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria’ plans a ‘revolution’ march tomorrow, Monday 5th August, with the aim of bringing ‘regime change’ in Nigeria without recourse to a nationwide vote.

“The President of Nigeria and his administration respect and uphold the right of every Nigerian to peaceful protest and civil campaign– whether to raise awareness on issues, and even oppose the government. It is the inalienable right of all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to do so.

“There is, however, a difference between peaceful call to protest and incitement for a revolution.

“The organisation championing this planned action is not fronted by any serious public faces. We call on the sponsors and organisers to have the decency to come forward and make their identity known – out of respect to all Nigerians – so that Nigerians can be fully aware in whose name this ‘revolution’ is being proposed and who the beneficiaries may be.’

According to the statement the presidential and National Assembly elections that were held simultaneously on February 23 were won by President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement added that the campaign was observed while results were confirmed by international election monitoring groups and observers.

Shehu said: “The result was even contested by the losing presidential candidate and his party in court. The ballot box is the only constitutional means of changing government and a president in Nigeria. The days of coups and revolutions are over.

“Those making the ‘revolution’ call hide behind the veil of social media modernity. But without revealing the identity of their sponsors, this shadowy campaign is no better, and no more democratic than the days of old.

“The President calls on all those who seek to use and hide behind everyday citizens to attain power through undemocratic and violent means, which has been alluded, to come out clearly and be identified.

“They should lead their march in person. Only then will they begin to have the right to call themselves leaders before the people of Nigeria.”

Also on Sunday, the DSS said through a statement signed by Dr. Afunanya:  ”He (Sowore) is with us because he has crossed the line, he has threatened public safety; Sowore has, as a matter of fact threatened the peaceful coexistence, social harmony of Nigeria and there is apprehension, there is anxiety, citizens are worried as to what would happen next.

“There would not be anything like a revolution.”

The DSS spokesman declined to disclose where Sowore was being held or when he would be arraigned in court, but he stressed that there was enough justification for keeping him in custody.

“In the last few hours, I have been inundated with messages and calls inquiring whether or not Omoyele Sowore is with us,” Afunanya told reporters on Sunday at the Abuja headquarters of the DSS, shortly before making it clear that the “DSS is not ready to disclose where the online newspaper publisher is being kept or when he would be arraigned in court.”

Afunanya, who emphasized that the DSS was convinced that Sowore was working in tandem with some undisclosed foreign interests, also expressed the DSS’ confidence that the planned demonstration will not take place today.

He said: “The DSS is a responsible security and intelligence agency; it adheres strictly to the fundamental principles and tenets of democracy; it is statutorily charged with responsibilities for the detection and prevention of cries and threats against the internal security of Nigeria.

“More importantly, the Service is also charged with the responsibility of managing, containing and eliminating threats against the national security of Nigeria and these include threats of sabotage, subversion, terrorism and, of course , threats of espionage, including ethnic and separatist agitations, economic sabotage and so on.

“If we are operating as a responsible organisation and someone is calling for a revolution in Nigeria, what is a revolution? It is primarily a revolt, it means insurrection, insurgency, it means forceful takeover of government.

“Nigeria operates a democratic system; it is not a banana republic and cannot suddenly be made into one.

“Nigeria is respected in the comity of nations, it is the pride of Africa. The DSS will not sit by and watch someone and his cohorts threaten the peace and constitutionalism. As to whether Sowore is wth us or not, the answer is in the affirmative – Sowore is with us.”

Afunanya said the demonstration being planned by Sowore’s associates and scheduled for today would not be allowed.

“We want to use this opportunity to assure law-abiding Nigerians, friends of Nigeria and people of the world that come tomorrow, 5th of August, 2019, there‘ll be absolute peace in Nigeria and nothing would happen, there won’t be any revolution.

“The government that has been elected democratically will remain in place, there will not be any forceful takeover of government and the DSS will not stand by and watch self-serving people take the laws into their hands

“We will do all that is within the law to discharge our responsibilities and ensure that there is peace in Nigeria tomorrow,” Afunanya said.

He said that anyone in pursuit of power who lost an election ought to wait for another election rather than take steps that could run into conflict with DSS’ statutory responsibilities of preserving peace and order.

He also said that DSS believes that Sowore is determined to carry out his threats for sabotaging government and governance in Nigeria, using some foreign collaborators.

“We are aware that he is also working with some persons outside Nigeria to cause disaffection, chaos and anarchy in the country and we will not stand by and watch that happen”, Afunanya said.

  • Court restrains National Assembly from Edo Assembly takeover

Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has restrained the National Assembly, the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) from interfering or sealing up the Edo State House of Assembly.

He granted an ex-parte application filed by the Edo State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Yekini Idiaye and a member Henry Okhuarobo, who represents Ikpoba-Okha constituency.

Justice Mohammed also ordered the Clerk of the National Assembly, Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker from interfering or taking over the Assembly’s legislative functions.

The court barred Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki from issuing any fresh proclamation for the state Assembly pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice.

The court granted four orders of interim injunctions and adjourned until August 16 for further hearing.

The court restrained the Inspector-General of Police and the State Security Service or their agents or officers from sealing up the Assembly or obstructing the plaintiffs in whatever manner in the performance of their constitutional duties as members of the Edo State House of Assembly.

R.O. Isenalumhe and Kingsley Idahosa are the plaintiffs’ counsel.

Clerk of the National Assembly, Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker are the first, second and third defendants.

The Inspector General of Police, the State Security Service and the Governor of Edo State are the other defendants.

The judge granted “an order of interim injunction restraining the first to third defendants/respondents, their servants, agents, Officers or privies from interfering or taking over the legislative functions of the Edo State House of Assembly pending the determination of the Motion on Notice.”

The fourth order reads: “The plaintiffs/applicants are granted an Order of Interim Injunction restraining the sixth defendant/respondent from issuing any fresh proclamation for the holding of another first session for the Edo state House of Assembly pending the hearing and the determination of substantive suit.”

The Edo State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a political quagmire due to the refusal of some members said to be loyal to former Governor Adams Oshiomhole to be inaugurated on the date Governor Obaseki of Edo State issue a declaration.

  • #RevolutionNow protest not treasonable, says Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has faulted the Department of State Security’s (DSS’s) classification of the planned protest of the #RevolutionNow group as treasonable.

Soyinka, in a statement yesterday, said: “Deployment of alarmist expressions such as “treason”, “anarchist”, “public incitement” etc. by Security forces have become so predictable and banal that they have become meaningless. Beyond the word ‘revolution, another much mis-used and misunderstood word, nothing that Sowore has uttered, written, or advocated suggests that he is embarking on, or urging the public to engage in a forceful overthrow of the government.  Nothing that he said to me in private engagement ever remotely approached an intent to destabilise governance or bypass the normal democratic means of changing a government. I, therefore, find the reasons given by the Inspector-General, for the arrest and detention of this young ex-presidential candidate totally contrived and untenable, unsupported by any shred of evidence. His arrest is a travesty and violation of the fundamental rights of citizens to congregate and make public their concerns.

“This is all so sadly déjà vu.  How often must we go through this wearisome cycle? We underwent identical cynical contrivances under the late, unlamented Sani Abacha, when he sent storm-troopers to disrupt a planning session for a similar across-nation march at Tai Solarin School, Ikenne. This was followed up by a personalised letter that was hand-delivered by the State Security Services to me under their summons, at their Abeokuta so-called ‘Annexe’ with near-identical wording to the threats contained in today’s release from the desk of the Chief of Police. At least, I was summoned, not subjected to a terrorist midnight arrest. Some irony!

“The same pattern Pavlovian conduct manifested itself under yet another supposed democratic ruler who personally declared that the gathering of civilians to deliberate on, and propose a constitution for the nation was ‘high treason’, and would be resisted by the full rigour of state power if we persisted. The Inspector-General of Police mobilized his forces and issued inflammatory proclamations, but PRONACO went ahead despite all the thundering from Aso citadel.  Can the police ever learn anything also their tear-gassing and brutalizing of grieving mothers who marched peacefully to protest the deaths of their children in a plane crash inferno? Their mission, under that same regime, which was simply to deliver a letter to the government house in Lagos, demanding greater safety in airline operations, yet such a rational intent, born of traumatic circumstances, was quashed on the sidewalks of a supposed twentieth-century nation.

“And yet again, even a faceless cabal under yet another civilian regime refused to be left out of the insensate play of power. A march on Aso Rock calling for an end to governance by a ghostly entity was slated to be crushed, but fortunately, a conflicting balance of interests decided in favour of a reduced trajectory of protest. And so on and on and on, in a nation which continues to speak at once through both sides of the mouth, spewing out the same Treason monotone as if this was a magic incantation that could substitute for the venting of mass feelings, even as collective therapy!

“May I invite the Inspector-General to wade through the daily journals of the past few weeks and months, read and digest the calls by numerous sectors of society – across professions and national groupings – for demonstrations against the parlous conditions of society, all identifying ills to which attention must be drawn, and urgently, through mass action? Demonstrations and processions are time-honoured, democratic ways of drawing not only the attention of the government to ills but of mobilising the public towards a proactive consciousness of their condition, and thereby exhorting civil society also to devise means of ameliorating their condition through their own efforts? Religious bodies have urged such remedies, so have civic associations. The ready recourse to arrests, incarceration and threats to civilians are ultimately counter-productive. They alienate the citizens, erode their confidence in governance responsiveness, and thereby advance the very extremist nightmare that security agencies believe they are acting to thwart.

“If we cannot learn from the histories and experiences of other societies, let us at least learn from ours. Freedom is not so glibly qualified. It cannot be doled out like slops of charity from soup kitchens. Let the Police stick to their task of protecting and managing protests, not attempt to place their own meaning and declaration of intent on bogey words like – revolution!”
