  • Be more secretive and confidential, Alaafin urges Magu

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has advised the nation’s anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to be more discreet and confidential in their fight against corruption, saying the success recorded by the agency has gone a long way in helping restore confidence to the image of the country.

This is as the monarch pledged his support and cooperation to the agency in the fight against corruption, saying the greatest gift the EFCC can give to the country is recovering all the nation’s wealth stolen by people.

The first-class monarch spoke while playing host to the acting chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, in his Oyo palace.

Magu was represented by the Ibadan Zonal Head, Mr. Friday Ebelo, who led other top officials of the commission to seek the collaboration and support of the monarch in the fight against corruption as parts of the plans to enlist people at the grassroots on the anti-corruption war.

The Alaafin, who noted that the eighth national assembly frustrated the confirmation of the appointment of Magu because they (the lawmakers) have skeleton in their cupboard, enjoined the team led by the anti-corruption czar not to be discouraged in the face of harassment and intimidation, noting that the nation depends on the efficiency of the agency and as such must not be allowed to fail.

Alaafin said, “Nigeria is very rich but what is killing us is corruption. Just this morning (yesterday), I read in the papers that the EFCC has been able to gather from fraudulent people N500billion. That attests to the efficacy of your work.

“Whether we like it or not, we must serve you. I must encourage you, we must support you, cooperate with you, otherwise what will kill Nigeria is corruption. The fear of EFCC is driving some looters to several parts of the world, but you have been going after them and catching them. There is no hiding place for them and I want to commend you.

“The eighth national assembly tried to do everything possible not to get Magu appointed because they had a skeleton in their cupboards.”

Speaking earlier, Ebelo told the monarch that the team’s visit was at the instance of the commission’s acting chairman, who, according to him, has decided to engage the traditional institutions across the country in the campaign against corruption in order to get the message down to the grassroots more effectively, assuring the monarch that Magu would soon visit him personally.

Ebelo said, “The EFCC Ibadan zonal office is visiting the Alaafin of Oyo on behalf of EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, to rally the traditional institutions’ support in the fight against corruption and other issues coming up in recent times. We now have cybercrime and internet-related frauds that youths of late are getting themselves involved in.”

  • We’ve been dragged to court 1,600 times over 2019 polls – INEC chair

Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has disclosed that the commission had been dragged to court over 1,600 times in relation to the 2019 General Elections.

The INEC boss said most of the cases stem from acrimonious political party primaries.

He stated this in Kaduna on Saturday shortly after receiving award of excellence from the Kaduna chapter of the National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Yakubu, who was fielding questions from newsmen on the possibility of credible, rancour and litigation free elections in Nigeria, said acrimonies from political party primaries was responsible for most of the crises and court cases.

According to him, “we can have election that is free, but elections start from party primaries because they produce the candidates for the general education. However, before the last general elections, we had some of the most acrimonious party primaries in the history of elections in Nigeria, resulting to a large number of litigations.

“As we speak, INEC has been dragged to court 809 times over the conduct of primaries by political parties. If you add that to the post-election litigations, we have so far been dragged to court over 1,600 times. So, we have been dragged to court because of party primaries; suits challenging the conduct of the elections.

“That notwithstanding, elections can be free and fair, we are doing our best as an electoral commission, but INEC has its responsibilities clearly cut out, others have theirs, especially the political parties have theirs. But, working together, we will actually get to where we desire to be,” he said.

  • Prayer best solution to security challenges, say Christian women

The Gospel Faith Mission (GOFAMINT) Adebayo District, Ekiti State Christian women has said fervent prayer for God’s intervention remains the potent solution to the security challenges afflicting Nigeria.

The District leader, Dr. Cicilia Adebayo, appealed to Nigerians to be ceaseless in prayers for God to curb prevailing banditry, killings and kidnapping across the nation.

Adebayo made the remark in Ado Ekiti at a three- day 9th annual women conference organised by the GOFAMINT, Adebayo District with the theme: “That they may know their God”.

The wife of the district head lamented the prevailing banditry, killing and other manifestation of criminalities were hampering socio-economic development of the country.

She stressed national peace and unity are preconditions for any ideal society to witness meaningful and sustainable growth and development.

She said that it was time Nigerians took responsibility of proffering solutions to the nation’s numerous challenges through prayers for spiritual intervention.

“Our country’s situation is getting worse and insecurity is a major problem confronting us.

“I think we need to remain steadfast and to join hands together in prayer to restore peace and tranquility.

“Prayers should be intensified by all Nigerians, irrespective of religious, political or ethnic differences.

“Because security is not in ammunition but on the protection of God. And I strongly believe Nigeria will overcome the present situation with God’s intervention,” she stated.

The women leader said that the conference was to sensitise women on the needs to be steadfast in Christ at such precarious situation and contribute their best to solving the country’s problems.

Adebayo said: “In the course of this conference, knowledge has been imparted on the people; when the people apply it, it will make a significant difference in their lives and that of the country.”

She, however, called on the Federal Government to take proactive steps to stem the tide criminalities, stressing the need for the deployment of intelligence technology such as drone to comb their hideouts.

The guest lecturer, Deaconess Titilayo Ojo said Nigeria is teetering on the precipice because the people are not steadfast in God.

Ojo noted that except Nigerians have uncompromising faith in God, the country will continue to wander in the wilderness of difficulties.

“Our trust should be in God. He is the Almighty. If we can surrender our lives to him He will give us power to do exploit spiritually.

“We need to breakthrough in our spiritual life. If people can pray fervently and read the words of God they will be champion in doing exploit.

“Those who know their God shall be strong and do mighty works. And those who know His name will put their trust in him and by that thrust will do great things, “she said.

Ojo enjoined Nigerians to pray for peace, progress and political stability of the country, urging them to assist the security operatives with intelligence reports that could lead to the arrest of criminals.

He scored a total average of 68 percent to beat other contestants across the nation.

Ferdinard came third in the competition last year.

Oluwaseun Esther Aremu of Shepherd International College Ado-Ekiti came second with an average score of 61percent while Adeola Ademuwa Ifeola from Chrisfield College, Itamaga, Ikorodu came third with a total average score of 60 percent .

The Chief Examiner, Professor Akachi Ezeigbo, stated 612 essay entries were sent in for assessment, representing a drop of about 28 percent compared to the 848 last year.

The drop, according to her, does not indicate any waning of enthusiasm for the competition.

“As we understand it, the drop arises in part from new management strategies introduced by the organisers to ensure that only credible entries are sent in for assessment.

“Based on the positive feedback and to further the institutionalization of the Bishop Mike Okonkwo Lecture Series, we urge the organisers to put the winning entries in a book form, as had been done to the adult version of lectures to make the materials more portable and accessible to teachers and students.

“Such a compilation will build capacity and prepare students for a more viable participation in future competitions. More importantly, it will be a unique addition to curriculum materials.

Other communities that have benefited from the medical outreaches by the hospital are Ilaje, Oshodi, Bar Beach, Oniru New Market and Mayegun community in Lekki.

HSH Cancer Screening & Diagnostics Centre has screened over 101, 837 people and 9,505 dialyses completed at subsidised rate and many free.

Ezinne said HSH has completed nine kidney transplants in partnership with some medical institutions abroad.

“The Dialysis Support Scheme is the reason we won the award. It shows that whatever you put your mind to do it is possible regardless of the circumstance.

“Health care is really a complex system and it is something you can do if you are determined,” Ezinne said.

  • El-Zakzaky’s plight worsens as elder brother declares him a terrorist

Elder brother of Sheikh Ibraheem Yakubu El-Zakzaky, the leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shi’ites, Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yakoob, has reacted to the recent proscription of IMN, saying that, it was long overdue.

El-Zakzaky’s elder brother, who is also the Zaria Branch Chairman of Izalatul Bid’ia wa Ikamatus sunna, told our correspondent in an exclusive interview in Zaria, Kaduna State that the federal government should not stop at proscribing IMN but go further to disband the Shi’ite sect in its entirety.

He said there is no difference between his younger brother’s IMN, the Shi’ite sect and the dreaded terrorist group Boko Haram, adding that both the leader of the deadly Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, and his younger brother, El-Zakzaky, are terrorists.

He said the decision taken by the federal government to proscribe the IMN was not only right but overdue because the government can be overthrown through the violent protests of the group.

Sheikh Yakoob said the IMN leader is responsible for whatever calamity has befallen him, saying that he was warned when he started propagating “his dangerous Shi’ite doctrine.”

He said: “As you may be aware, El-Zakzaky is my blood brother. We were given birth to by the same father. While growing up, before he started this journey into Shi’ism, I didn’t have any close friend apart from him. We did everything together. We studied together in Islamic school.

“We warned him seriously to desist when he started this Shi’ism ideology. I personally warned him several times, and when he refused, I had to abandon him. So, whatever the authorities might have done to him, he caused it for himself.”

Sheikh Yakoob added: “There is nothing good about Shi’ism. These people are supposed to have been proscribed a long time ago, but the government waited until they are now causing havoc.

“In the entire world, where has the Chief of Army Staff ever been blocked on the way and denied right of passage? Since the time Shi’ites people did that to the Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, they were supposed to have been stopped. But now, the authorities seem to have understood their mission.

“Anywhere the Shi’ites are, they are always a problem. They are the ones that ruined Iraq. They are the ones that ruined Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. All the crises you see in the Middle-East, Shi’ites are responsible for them.

“You see, with their protests, they çan take over government. The enemies of the country and enemies of the sitting government can take advantage of the Shi’ites protest and overthrow the government.

“I believe the government now understands this secret. What the government has done is very right.”

On Tuesday’s declaration by another Shi’ites group that IMN members are fake Shi’ites, El-Zakzaky’s brother described the declaration as hypocritical, saying that all Shi’ites groups have the same doctrine and ideology.

“They are liars. All Shi’ites are one,” he said.

“What they are doing is hypocrisy. All of them have the same doctrine and ideology. They are only in Shi’ites leadership tussle with Zakzaky. That is why they are denouncing him publicly.

“Therefore, it is not only Zakzaky’s group that is supposed to be proscribed. The government should outlaw the entire Shi’ites sect. This is because both Boko Haram and Shi’ites share the same ideology.

“They can continue to fool other people that they are not armed, but we know they carry arms. Didn’t you see them shown with their arms?

“They lied that they were not the ones that killed the police officer in Abuja. The Deputy Commissioner of Police that was killed in Abuja was not the first police officer to be killed by the Shi’ites.”

When asked about the court order that, said his brother should be released and a house built for him anywhere in northern Nigeria, Sheikh Yakubu said, government should only obey such order if it is also ready to build a house for the leader of the dreaded Boko Haram group, Abubakar Shekau.

He said: “Nobody should blame the government for holding him despite the Abuja court order. Some would say, ehn, court ordered that Zakzaky should be released and a house built for him. If they want the government to build a house for Zakzaky, then the government should also build a house for Shekau.

“Do Nigerians agree that government should build a house for Shekau? If no, then government should not build a house for Zakzaky, because they are the same. They are all terrorists.”

He noted that since the exit of El-Zakzaky, Zaria, which was his base, has been very peaceful as security agents have been able to tame their “violent activities.”

IMN backs El-Zakzaky’s daughter, vows to continue protests

But in spite an order proscribing it, top members of IMN yesterday aligned with the decision made by the daughter of their detained leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky that the group’s protests will continue until her parents are released.

The group also disowned the statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesman, Ibrahim Musa, that they had suspended the protests in line with the proscription of the sect by the Federal Government through a court order.

Suhaila Zakzaky in videos shared on her Facebook page on Thursday questioned the ban and said the protests would continue until her father is released.

A statement issued by a top member of the IMN, Abdullahi Musa, for Academic Forum, Sisters’ Forum and Abul-Fadl, said other IMN members were not informed about the ban on protests.

Musa said: “On the 31st day of July, 2019, a press statement titled “We Are Temporarily Suspending Our Street Protests” and signed by Malam Ibrahim Musa, President of the Media Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, went viral.

“The article was published and aired by numerous media outlets, both local and international.

“In the statement, it was written that “this was mainly to create openings into the resolution of problems, especially the court case instituted by our lawyers on the proscription order by the federal government this week.”

It further claimed that “if at all any protests occurred anywhere in the country, it might be this notice hasn’t reached those in the field or this message is misunderstood or it is some security agents who are behind it.

“First of all, we would like to state for the record that apart from members of the media forum, none of us was informed of this prior to seeing it in the papers and online.

“Secondly, the media forum of the Islamic Movement is supposed to consist of Press men and thus has no involvement in the organising of our ceremonies, our protests or legal activities among others.

“Thirdly, no decision of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria has ever been communicated on the pages of a newspaper.

“Contrary to what the statement may insinuate, it is important to note that the proscription order was not an act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but rather from some Federal High Court in the capital Abuja.

“Bear in mind that courts do not make laws; the National Assembly does, and there is a process involved.

“Under the constitution, even the President lacks the legal authority to simply pronounce edicts into law. Nigeria is not an absolute monarchy.

“Most pre-eminently, the right to protest peacefully is enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. Impunity is not.”

The IMN disowned Ibrahim Musa as their spokesman, saying: “In the aftermath of the publication of this unfortunately misleading statement, we subsequently tried to investigate the source of this frankly confusing document.

“We have consulted extensively with fellow followers of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky on this matter.

“Our only conclusion is that this whole affair was a combination of misinformation, miscommunication, human error and other significant factors.

“Here in Abuja, we are legally protesting the illegal detention of our leader and his wife.

“By doing this for our leader, we are also legally protesting against all forms of illegal detention, extrajudicial killings, among numerous other illegal perpetrations of injustice by this current administration.

“The statement signed by Malam Ibrahim Musa of the media forum does not, in any way, reflect the beliefs and convictions of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

“A single representative of a Forum within the Islamic Movement has no authority to single-handedly dictate his opinion on every one of us. Only our leader Sheikh Zakzaky may do that.

“For this reason, we are compelled to caution the media to never treat, any further, such explicit declarations by any member of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in general, and Ibrahim Musa in particular, without a grain of salt.

“We wish to also explicitly state that we are fully determined to continue our protests.

“We shall continue our peaceful protests uninterrupted and unhindered till our leader Sheikh Zakzaky is free, for as long as it takes, regardless of obstacles.

“Until Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky is Free, our protests will continue.”

  • Why my approach as APC chair is combative — Oshiomhole

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has told those accusing him of being too combative as the National Chairman of a governing party that he is not about to change.

He also said he did not join politics to be changed by the way things are done by politicians.

The former Edo State governor, who spoke at a reception organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the visiting Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Guy Ryder, said he was of the view that diplomacy would not address the challenges facing the country, adding that only an aggressive engagement can force those benefiting from the status quo to change in a way that will make the country better.

Oshiomhole said he believes that more labour leaders should join government so that together they can force a change in the way things are done in the country.

Oshiomhole said: “Whatever I am doing today, my style and choice of what I do and what I abstain from doing, I owe to Labour.

“If you read Nigerian media, there is this saying that as national chairman of a governing party, I am not supposed to be combative, and I said that I am even more convinced now about the need for combat.

“If this country is going to change and deliver to the poor, deliver decent jobs, we need not diplomacy but aggressive engagement to force those who are benefiting from the status quo to change and in such a way that will make the country to work for people who live on their wages.

“Some people said to me that I am too combative, and I said to them that I was not coming to copy their method but coming to impose my method; to change the system and not for the system to change me.

“I refuse to be changed by the system. My hope is that with more comrades coming in, we will work together to change the system for a better future.

“I am very proud of my background as a factory hand, as a factory organiser, as a general secretary of textile workers, President of NLC.

“And then some people say I cross, and I say I cross to where? I just continue with the struggle

“I can explain, because I move from conveying my grievances with placards and organising strikes with protest and pressure to trying my hands on the driver’s wheel.

“To try to do those things that I tried to communicate with placards, I now use executive pen to get it done.”

  • Help recover our stolen funds, Magu begs UK

For the second time in two weeks, the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, has appealed to the British Government to help Nigeria to retrieve the country’s stolen money stashed in banks in the United Kingdom.

He said it was worrisome that the wealth of the country has for a very long time, remained trapped in foreign countries.

He said the delay in repatriating stolen funds was hindering infrastructural development of Nigeria and creating paucity of funds to run the country.

He said Nigeria would have been better if the stolen monies have been returned.

Magu said: “Our worry is that our money has been held for a very long time in foreign countries and if our money is returned, there will be improved infrastructural development in many sectors of the economy.

“If all the repatriated funds are pumped into the country, it will significantly enhance our abilities and capabilities.”

He faulted the rate at which illicit funds are being moved away to Britain and other European countries.

He said the EFCC has carried out a lot of activities in local and foreign airports in trying to stop and apprehend looters exiting or entering the country with illicit funds.

He disclosed that some unscrupulous elements were smuggling out raw gold, especially from Zamfara State to foreign countries.

A statement by the Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Tony Orilade, quoted Magu as saying the smuggling was being used to launder money outside the shores of the country.

He said the smugglers were denying the country of the precious natural endowment that would have been processed locally and value gained from it.

He said Nigeria, especially the EFCC, has a good working relationship with the British Government, and has also received lots of support from the UK Government.

The leader of the SOCJA delegation from the UK’s National Crime Agency, Paddy Kerr, disclosed that the visit to the EFCC followed the instruction from the British Government that each team under the Serious Organized Crime Joint Analysts, SOCJA, should go to every region in the world and try to get the picture of its peculiar organized crimes.

Kerr said: “We need to understand from the EFCC’s perspective, what is driving crimes and corruption in Nigeria. What are the key things EFCC is doing that British can assist?”

Aside Nigeria in West Africa, the assignment he said, will take the team to Ghana, Guinea and Senegal, in order to identify the threats and challenges, facing the countries of this region from organized crimes.

Kerr added: “Our job is not to be the experts, but to try to understand what are the underlying causes and driving forces of serious organized crimes, so that we can have better programmes in the future and better direct our resources.”

He disclosed that they were looking at areas of illicit financial flows, bribery, embezzlement and contract negotiation, adding that “we are looking at collaboration that will enhance EFCC’s abilities, intelligence gathering and sharing.”

He called for synergy between the EFCC and SOCJA, noting that “criminals are constantly thinking of new ways to get away with their criminal activities.”

Kerr said Nigerian government needed political will to win the fight against corruption.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari for the renewed momentum in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.

Other members of the delegation are Jim Connelly Webster and Kathryn Lockett.
