  • Herdsmen/farmers clash: FG urged to establish Ministry of Reconciliation

Federal Government has been urged to establish the Ministry of Reconciliation to tackle prevalent cases of internal conflicts and restiveness in the country.

National President, National Complementary and Alternative Medical Association (NACAMA), Prof. Peter Katchy, made the call in Onitsha at the annual general meeting/conference of the association.

He said the call followed cases of herdsmen/farmers conflicts, youth restiveness, hate speeches and religious intolerance in most parts of the country.

He described the establishment of such ministry with sufficient budgetary provisions as a first step to enthrone peace and unity among the citizenry as well as to secure Nigeria’s future.

He said: “It has become pertinent to call on federal and state governments to embark on the reconciliation of Nigerians to keep the country united and secure.

“The ministry will cause peace and national cohesion which is better than tough talks and military deployments.”

Katchy, who doubles as Anambra State chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society, canvassed for the provision of  trainings and empowerment for youths to mitigate the increasing rate of unemployment in the country.

Speaking on complementary and alternative medicine, the NACAMA boss said alternative medicine had become the forefront for the realisation of improved, available and effective healthcare delivery system.

“A lot of successes have been achieved through complementary and alternative medicine in the treatment of cancers, renal calculi, hemorrhoid, ocular and eye affections, leg ulcers, teeth/gum infections, bone and bone marrow diseases.

“These successes were achieved without surgical applications, “ he added.

He urged members to sustain focus on capacity building in medical innovations, researches, drug proving and newer approaches for accelerated management of medical matters.

Earlier, Secretary, Board of Registered Trustees, NACAMA, Dr Ayodele Akindipe, lauded members of the association for the feat achieved so far.

He called for the maintenance of ethical standards of practice, members’ welfare, compassionate service, integrity and decorum as well as professionalism and excellence among members in the discharge of their duties.

The event, themed “Consolidating CAM Practice in Nigeria”, witnessed the presentation of awards of Pillar of the Association to five persons, including Dr Emmanuel Onah, Director of Medical Services, Enugu.

Other recipients were Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Umede Idris, Dr Ayodele Akindipe, Mr Augustina Ekweozor, a lawyer and Dr Henry Okafor, a businessman.

  • 18 LCC employees in police net over alleged fraud

Eighteen toll collectors of Lekki Concession Company Limited (LCC) suspected to have defrauded the company of huge sums of money have been handed over to the police by the management of the company for investigation.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Mubashiru Hassan, made this known during the week in a press statement. He said that the affected staff took advantage of the operational hitch which occurred in January this year at the Operations Department of the company to perpetrate some sharp practices at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza.

According to him, following the resolution of the operational hitches early in June, the Operations Department carried out an audit of the period and noticed some anomalies in transactions, such as the abuse of the transaction unblock key, non-adherence to vehicle processing procedures (receipt of monies from customers without processing the vehicles, non-issuance of toll receipts to customers after receiving payments).

Other offences were sabotage of toll equipment, non-adherence to the controls and operating procedures, including the use of personal phones in the booths, processing of vehicles on another person’s profile and recording and accounting for low traffic numbers during peak periods.

Hassan added that consequent upon this discovery, they were queried and a disciplinary committee was constituted. Out of the 56 suspected staff, six were exonerated and 18 were indicted in the first batch and handed over to the police on July 11 for further investigation, while the remaining 32 are still undergoing internal questioning before the next decisive steps would be taken in line with the disciplinary policies of the company.

“LCC management will never tolerate any fraudulent act and will handle any of such behaviour decisively”, Hassan said.

He described the affected staff as unrepentant as “they have not seen what they have done as being criminal. Instead, they have gone on social media to malign the competence and character of the management staff, especially the Managing Director and Managers in the Operations Department who investigated and unravelled the fraudulent acts”

Hassan revealed that their action was borne out of their failed attempts to get out of their fraudulent acts, hence they took to blackmail.

“The company at different fora has warned members of staff to desist from any fraudulent activity in the company, as it will not spare the affected staff no matter how highly placed or connected. This company has taken it as a policy to reward excellence. This is done in order to encourage them to put in their best and remain honest in the discharge of their duties to the company,”he said.

  • FCT director, five others feared dead in Abuja, Yola floods

The Director of Finance, Federal Capital Territory High Court, Mr. Tony Okecheme, is feared dead after flood swept him away in the aftermath of a downpour in Abuja on Friday.

A similar flood claimed five lives in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Okecheme and his driver were heading for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in his official  car when they ran into the raging flood  and mud at Galadimawa Roundabout, Abuja.

While the driver managed to escape, his boss was unlucky.

After about one hour fighting for his life, Okecheme could no longer cope with the power of the massive water.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) who raced to the scene could not save him.

The victims of the Yola flood are believed to be children living  in communities around old Yola town.

The Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Dr Muhammed Suleiman, said he was yet to conclude the assessment of the damage by the flood when The Nation called him yesterday afternoon.

But he said between four and five children might have drowned or swept away in Jambutu and Wurojabe in Yola North Local Government Area and in Yolde Pate in Yola South Local Government Area.

“I wish you can just wait till my team returns from the assessment tour they have embarked on, because I can’t be specific now,” he said, and promised to speak later in the day after he would have been properly briefed.

The Yola North Transition Committee Chairman, Adamu Wakili, who addressed journalists in his office after an assessment visit to affected communities in the LGA, described the rain and the flood as unprecedented.

He said: “We have never experienced this one to two hours of intensive rain and heavy flooding before. Many were rendered homeless. We have just seen a tailor shop where three sewing machines were swept away.”

He put the number of the dead at three which occurred, according to him, at Jambutu and Wurojabe.

Many families and business owners were displaced following the rain which caused gutters to overflow into homes and business places mostly in Jimeta area of the Adamawa State capital.

The rain had poured heavily on Thursday evening, flooding households in much of Jimeta and Yola town with most streets in Jambutu, Bachure, Wurojabe, Kofare and some other communities becoming rivers of rain swept water and causing massive traffic holdup.

  • Cabinet: Performance benchmarks likely for ministers

Indications emerged on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari might set performance benchmarks for the nation’s 43 new ministers.

The ministers may, however, not be inaugurated till after undergoing an induction programme between August 15 and 16.

But the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government yesterday announced documentation and pre-inauguration processes for the ministers designate.

Investigation by our correspondent showed that the President is going to give targets to the new ministers and timelines for delivering on projects.

It was learnt that the ministers are expected to work on “deliverables” which would have immediate effect on the masses.

According to findings, the targets for ministers will be in line with the President’s promise to leave “sustainable legacies” after two terms in office.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The President will set performance benchmarks for the new ministers. This time around, he believes every minister must live up to expectations and deliver on projects as contained in 2019-2023 Roadmap.

“So, the ministers will be monitored and rated according to deliverables. Those who are coming are expected to work round the clock.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “No minister will be exempted from the performance benchmarks. Every minister must add value to the system.

“All ongoing projects must be completed and realistic short-term new projects will be put in place.”

Meanwhile, the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government yesterday announced documentation and pre-inauguration processes for the ministers designate.

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan had on August 12, 2012 introduced a Performance Agreement for ministers.

The agreement, which was drawn by ex- Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, was, however, breached by most of the ministers.

The mode of performance benchmarks for ministers under President Buhari was unclear as at press time.

A statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, also indicated that the ministers might not be inaugurated until after undergoing an induction programme between August 15 and 16.

The statement said: “Following confirmation by the Senate, all ministers designate are by this notice informed that relevant documents for their study and guidance, preparatory to the inauguration of the cabinet shall be available for collection at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) (Cabinet Affairs Office) from 10.00am on Tuesday August 6, 2019.

“Ministers designate are also requested to please bring along and submit to the OSGF, their updated CVs in soft and hard copies as well as any valid identification document.

“Finally, I am pleased to inform you that, in view of the need to allow ministers designate enough time to study the documents (Status Report on Policies, Programmes and Projects; the 2019-2023 Road Map, FEC Handbook, etc) and considering the upcoming Sallah break, His Excellency, Mr. President has approved an induction retreat for ministers designate to be held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja from August 15-16, 2019.”

  • Anxiety as gunmen kill Catholic priest, abduct five pastors

There was anxiety across the country on Friday following gunmen’s abduction of five pastors of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) by gunmen at the Ogbere stretch of Benin-Shagamu Expressway on Thursday.

With the news of the abduction came that of the killing, on the same day, of a Catholic priest by gunmen in Enugu.

The police said last night that they had geographically located the five RCCG ministers.

The pastors were on their way to a conference of RCCG ministers preceding the annual convention of the church when they ran into the hoodlums.

The convention is scheduled to open on Monday.

News of their abduction was broken on Friday by the General Overseer of the RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, at the Redeemed Camp in Ogun State.

Killed in Enugu was Rev Father Paul Offu, who until his death was the parish priest of St. James the Greater Parish, Ugbawka in Nkanu West Local Government, Enugu State.

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo, condemned the murder and asked the federal government to act fast on the security challenge in the country.

A shocked Adeboye charged the congregation to pray for the release of the five RCCG pastors.

He said it was the first time the church would have that kind of experience.

He said: “As a father, how do you think I should feel to hear that five of my children have been kidnapped while on their way to attend the Ministers Conference?”

The Ogun State Police Command said it had geographically located the forest where the five –four men and a female- were being kept by their abductors.

In the kidnappers’ den, according to the spokesman for the police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, are Chidioze Eluwa, Chiemela Iroha, Okoro Ohowukwe, Ndubuizi Owuabueze and Ibeleji Chidinma (female).

Oyeyemi told reporters in Abeokuta that the victims were abducted at the J3 stretch of the Lagos –Benin Road at Ogbere in Ogun State.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the police rescue team was trying to be tactical and professional in storming the location to avoid jeopardizing the lives of the victims.

He said: “On the 1st of August 2019, at about 3:30 pm, the Ogun State Police Command received information that a commercial vehicle with registration number KW 230 XA belonging to Abia Line Transport Company was coming from the Eastern part of the country heading towards Lagos.

“On getting to J3 area of Ogbere, some hoodlums numbering about 10 suddenly came out of the forest and forcefully stopped the vehicle.

“Five amongst the passengers, namely Chidioze Eluwa, Chiemela Iroha, Okoro Ohowukwe, Ndubuizi Owuabueze and Ibeleji Chidinma (female) were abducted and taken into the forest.

“The commissioner of police CP Bashir Makama is personally leading the operation to rescue the victims with operatives from the command’s tactical squads combing the entire area.

“The hideout of the hoodlums has been geo-located but our men are trying to be tactical and professional in order not to jeopardize the lives of the victims we are making efforts to rescue.

“With the operation going on presently, we are rest assured that the victims will soon regain their freedom and the hoodlums will definitively be brought to book.”

Force headquarters spokesman, Frank Mba, said on TVC yesterday that a massive search and rescue operation was underway in Ogun State to free the victims and a separate operation in progress in Enugu to arrest the killers of Offu.

Enugu launches air surveillance in flashpoints after Catholic priest’s murder

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, heads of security agencies, religious leaders and other stakeholders in the state launched into an emergency security meeting at the Government House, Enugu, yesterday following Thursday’s killing of Rev. Fr.Offu by unknown gunmen.

The meeting ordered an air surveillance in all the flashpoints with effect from Monday.

Besides, Ugwuanyi directed the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous act.

On a general note, the security architecture of the affected areas will be reviewed.

Police Commissioner Suleiman Balarabe told reporters that the meeting observed with deep concern the proliferation of dangerous arms in the state.

Consequently, all those in possession of illegal weapons were given three days to submit them to the police “after which anybody found with illegal weapons will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”

He also said that the state government resolved at the emergency meeting to employ the services of Forest Guards and equally strengthen the services of the Neighborhood Watch groups in the state.

Also speaking, the Anglican Archbishop of Enugu, the Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, appealed to the police authorities to increase the number of policemen in the state.

He said that the state remains safe and secure for everybody,” adding: “We are not afraid and nobody should think that he can get Enugu State into a state of violence or insecurity.

The emergency came soon after the police in the state and the Director of Communication, Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, confirmed Offu’s death.

Offu’s killers were said to have abducted a commercial car driver during the incident.

The driver’s name was given as Kenneth Igwe.

Igwe’s fate was unknown at press time.

Achi said that the deceased was taken away and killed along Ihe-Agbudu Road in Awgu Local Government Area of the state.

The director of communication said that the situation had become unbearable as another Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ikechukwu Ilo escaped assassination on June 19, 2019.

He said that Ilo was still recuperating from the gun shots he received along Numeh- Nenwe road in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state.

“As we speak, Catholic priests in Enugu are on the streets demonstrating over these incidences,” Achi said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu Police Command, Mr Ebere Amarizu confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing to unravel the perpetrators.

As news of the killing spread, about 200 Offu’s colleagues in the Enugu Diocese took to the streets of the city to protest continued attacks allegedly targeted at them.

The Catholic priests, wore white cassocks and marched peacefully through major roads.

They carried placards with various inscriptions such as: “Enough is Enough’’, “Catholic Priests are Targets of Hoodlums’’,  “We Cannot be Living in Fear’’, “Government Must Address Security Challenge in Enugu’’ and “We Are Not Happy with Government’’.

Addressing newsmen on the development, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu, Dr. Callistus Onaga, said that the protest was to register the displeasure of the diocese at the incessant attacks on Catholic priests by hoodlums in the state for the seventh year running.

Onaga said that the Catholic priests were simply demanding more security in the state adding that “if there are crop of bad herdsmen in the state they should be fished out and we will continue to live in peace with the good ones’’.

The bishop, however, noted that the attack had become unbearable as the diocese lost a priest in March, who was killed by suspected armed herdsmen.

He said that two weeks ago, another priest was shot in the state and “he is still receiving intensive medical attention as we speak’’.

“I am sorrowful and utterly disappointed on the security in the state. This year alone, we (diocese) have suffered some casualties.

“While we get worried when our priests are attacked is that it shows the level of insecurity other Nigerians face daily.

“Our priests are very much respected and honoured by the people (locals); so if these things can happen to them, what happens to the flock (the people they shepherd?).

“We were shocked to see a priest that joined in our meeting yesterday afternoon in this Bishop’s House very healthy and sound being reported to have died.

“Everybody is so sad, because it is becoming too constant especially within the past six or seven years now; we have suffered serious kidnapping of our priests.

“It is becoming too bad. In 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 our priests were kidnapped at various locations in the state.

“Only in 2017, we were given some breathing space. It continued in 2018 and this year, 2019; it is worse as we have suffered the death of a priest in March this year and now another issue,’’ he lamented.

Awka Catholic Bishop seeks immediate arrest of killers

In a separate interview in Akwa, the Catholic bishop of Awka Diocese,in Anambra State, the Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor, asked security operatives to arrest the  perpetrators of the crime without delay.

His words: “Enugu Government should not allow this matter to be swept under the carpet. Why always Catholic Priests?

“I am sad. What manner of country is this? A country where some people are untouchables.  A country some people will be killing innocent citizens”

”These senseless killing of the innocent Nigerians is becoming a daily occurrence. Why can’t our government put a stop to these killings here and there?

“Is it not obvious that some people, somewhere are carrying a particular agenda? There is more to this than meets the eye,” Ezeokafor said.

Nwodo, MASSOB, others spit fire over murder of priest

President of apex Igbo socio- cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nnia Nwodo, condemned Offu’s murder.

He said: “The government is paying lip service to the security of our people in this country. Why are our priests targeted, why are our religious ministers targeted?

“There would be retaliatory action if the federal government does not disarm the herdsmen. If they do not disarm them, our people will begin retaliatory actions.”

Nwodo spoke by phone with The Nation.

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB) was similarly upset by the murder of the cleric.

Its leader, Comrade Uche Madu, called for an immediate ime mkpuke meeting of Ndigbo to address the security challenge in the Southeast.

He said: “From every indication, there is no security anywhere in the land.  Tension is seriously rising over the unbridled murder of innocent citizens.

“That we have been keeping quiet does not mean we are weak. We are only enduring all this nonsense in order not to worsen the security situation of the country.  Our patience has been tested a great deal.

“If the situation is not arrested immediately, our youths may take up security of the South East to protect the lives and property of the people.  If the federal government is lackadaisical in providing securing for our people, the South East governors should rise up to the occasion and stop the mindless killings of our people. The time to act is now before it is too late.”
