  • Residents oppose building of petrol station near canal, gas station

Residents of Ogudu Ori-Oke in Kosofe Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State yesterday demanded the relocation of a filling station under construction by an oil trader, Petrocam Trading Nigeria Ltd, to avert disaster.

The petrol station is at Omotayo Banwo Street, beside a canal and the Manna Prayer Mountain Church building. A gas station is a few buildings away on Agboyi Road.

The residents expressed fear that in the event of a spillage and fire at the station, oil would flow into the canal, setting ablaze properties on its course.

Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman Chief Segun Oduwole alleged that Petrocam’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Patrick Ilo had paid no attention to the danger.

He said the firm ignored the Lagos State Building Control Agency’s (LASBCA’s) order to stop work and remove its uncompleted one-storey building on the land.

The Nation observed that the building was marked with “REMOVE LASBCA 5/07/19 GM.”

Oduwole recalled that a few years ago, the Babatunde Fashola administration demolished an inhabited storey building on the land because the area had been reserved years earlier for a link road to ease traffic.

He said: “The danger the petrol station portends to the inhabitants of the area and the public is enormous. Firstly, Ogudu, Ori-Oke is purely a residential area with a narrow road, which cannot accommodate a petrol station with the attendant hazards of petrol tankers bringing in petroleum products.

“There is no space on the narrow road for long vehicles, especially long tankers to manoeuvre on the road to supply highly inflammable petroleum products.

“Secondly, if this petrol station is allowed at this location, the regular gridlock at Omotayo Banwo Street from Ketu Alapere will re-emerge on the road and this will render the huge amount spent by the Lagos State Government on the construction of the road illogical and a waste of public resources, as the government’s aim of making the Ogudu Alapere link road passable would have been defeated.

“Thirdly, there is a high risk of fire outbreak, which will likely affect homes and properties located along the road either by manoeuvring fuel tankers or by the closeness of the petrol station to the canal/water channel and a bridge.”

A representative of the Manna Prayer Mountain Church, Mr. Diran Adebodun, said excavation work at the filling station damaged the church’s fence.

He said: “Our fence came down during the excavation. The church rebuilt it at almost N3.5million. Before then water passed under the old fence into the church’s premises from the filling station because their plot was water-logged. We were worried that in the event of a fuel leakage, it may flow into our premises. Besides, it may also sink into the soil and poison the water. We drink water from a borehole here.”

A policeman and a guard at the filling station declined comment.

But a representative of the company, who refused to identify herself, told The Nation on the phone that Petrocam Trading Nigeria Ltd was aware of the objection and would abide by any legal outcome between the parties.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikorodu branch, and two families have raised the alarm over one Dr. Charles, who is allegedly parading himself as a lawyer and extorting money from the public.

In a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP),  signed by the branch Chairman,  Adebayo Akinlade and Assistant Secretary, Oluwaseun Aka, NBA accused Charles of criminal conspiracy, threat to life and impersonation.

He was also accused of  intimidation, false information, forgery and obtaining by false pretence.

Conducts which the association said were likely to cause a breach of the peace.

“It is imperative to state among the surreptitious means used by Charles in duping people, are not but limited to proclaiming himself as personal assistant to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, by collecting huge sums of money from clients under the guise of filing court processes on their behalf. He also moves about parading himself as a close ally to the former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“His act of lawlessness cannot be quantified, as they are barbaric and dastardly. It is our belief that the law is no respecter of anybody. Efforts to make him change his fraudulent acts have proved abortive. We have been facing challenges over fake lawyers within our jurisdiction in the last two years.”

The association said it directed its former vice chairman to directly investigate the man because it was disturbed by his activities.

“The former vice chairman is ready to testify against the impostor if he is prosecuted in court. We hereby seek to alert the constituted authorities to investigate these assertions, to bring him to book. We have all evidence to back our allegations against him and we shall not hesitate to provide them when required.

“The policemen from Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos have in their possession incriminating documents retrieved from his office when a search warrant was executed there at Igbogbo, Ikorodu on July 12”, NBA said.

In their own petition, the families of Ajako and Shosanya of Owode Ibeshe in Ikorodu accused Charles of harassing them with the police when they discovered that he is not a lawyer.

The petition, signed by their lawyer Tayo Ladega  reads: “Our clients contacted Charles, who presented himself as a lawyer to help reclaim their expanse of land from NICHEMTX Ltd. But when our clients discovered that he was not a lawyer, the job to reclaim the land was revoked.

“To the chagrin of our clients, Charles has resorted to the use of mobile policemen whom he brought to the site of our clients and he also has been using the policemen to terrorise the families of our clients.”

The Director, Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Michael Adeyemi, said both ministries would end environmental infractions that may emerge from abattoir mismanagement.

He said butchers should  operate in mechanised abattoirs and slaughter houses where cows are slaughtered neatly, water and animal waste discharged properly to avoid pollution.

Adeyemi urged the abattoir concessionaires yet to obtain their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and fumigation certificates to do so to avoid the closure of their abattoirs.

  • Akeredolu’s wife leads sensitisation walk against rape

Ondo State Governor’s wife Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital led women on a sensitisation walk against alarming rate of rape in the state.

She called for legislations that would ensure stiffer penalties for rapists, child abusers and predators.

The walk is coming on the heels of the high rate of rape and child defilement incidence in Ondo State, which has been a concern to Mrs.  Anyanwu-Akeredolu.

The walk, which started at the palace of Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, spanned through to Oke Eda area of the town and it was reportedly done in all other 17 local government areas of the state.

Mrs. Anyanwu-Akeredolu had a fortnight ago chaired a stakeholders’ meeting, where she frowned at how minors were being subjected to trauma in the hands of rapists and solutions were proffered on how rape could be nipped in the bud.

The First Lady, who was represented by the Commissioner  for Woman Affairs,  Mrs. Titilayo Adeyemi, said the women were in palace to seek the monarch’s support and inform him that the menace of rape cases was worrisome to womenfolk.

“Kabiyesi, we are here to inform the palace that the issue of rape is a great concern to everybody. We are tired of it and we are here to solicit the help of the palace.

“When a minor is raped, it may cause premature death, sickness  and trauma.

“There is high tendency for rape victims to develop unnecessary hatred to men, making such victims difficult to have good homes,” she said.

She added that rape menace should be condemned by all and sundry, asking traditional institution to expose suspected rapists for proper punishment.

Oba Aladetoyinbo applauded Mrs. Ayanwu-Akeredolu for taking the initiative to stop the menace of rape.

The monarch, who condemned the menace, advocated life punishment for rapists.

He added that all morally human beings should support the initiative and contribute to it.
