  • Gunmen kidnap chief of staff’s sister-in-law

    Gunmen have kidnapped the sister-in-law of the Chief of Staff to the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe and another woman. The incident occurred at Kagara town in Niger State.

    The second victim is said to be the wife of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) special marshal at Kagara.

    A source said the kidnappers have demanded ransom from both families, but the sum could not be ascertained last night.

    Another source told The Nation that the gunmen stormed Kagara town on Saturday morning, shooting sporadically before abducting the two women.

    Nobody was injured.

    Police spokesman Abubakar Muhammed said he would call back our reporter regarding the incident. He did not confirm or refute the kidnap.

  • Comedian charged with rape

    24-year-old comedian, Iyanuloluwa Adejumobi, on Tuesday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping a woman.

    Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi did not take the plea of Adejumobi, who claimed that he was in court because his “amorous relationship” with the complainant went sour.

    Osunsanmi, granted the comedian N300,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must own landed property in Lagos, adding that both must be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She directed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. She adjourned till August 25.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde alleged that the defendant committed the offence on July 3 at his home.

    The defendant, he claimed, lured the woman into his room on the pretext that his father had seen a vision regarding her and wished to see her.

    The prosecutor alleged that the defendant beat up the complainant and raped her.

  • Fashola, Mamora for Traffic Radio lecture

    Former Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola is billed to deliver the keynote address at the 4th edition of the Lagos Traffic Radio Lecture Series tomorrow.

    Others expected to speak at the event are National Inland Waterways Authority Managing Director Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora.

    Chairman, Institute of Strategic Management, Lagos State chapter, Dr Sikiru Smith and Public Affairs Officer, United States Consulate-General, Lagos Mr Russel Brooks, are also expected at the event.

    Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is the chief host.

    The lecture, with the theme: “Lagos Beyond Roads: The Inter-Modal Transport option”, will hold at the Eko FM Multi-purpose Hall, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

    A statement yesterday by Lagos Traffic Radio General Manager Mr. Tayo Akanle said the lecture would set agenda for a future traffic management system, tilted towards having a more robust inter-modal structure.

    The statement said: “This 4th edition is in tandem with the traffic management and transportation initiatives of Governor Sanwo-Olu, as one of the pivotal policy thrusts to decongest roads.

    “The administration under its six-point agenda (T.H.E.M.E.S) seeks under the transportation and traffic management to integrate road, rail and water transportation to ease commuting by Lagosians.”

  • Sanwo-Olu declares Lekki, Ikoyi plazas toll free today

    Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared the two toll plazas at Lekki and Ikoyi-Lekki Link Bridge toll free during peak hours today.

    This is in continuation of the government’s simulation survey of traffic situation at the area to reduce traffic congestion.

    A statement by the governor’s Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said a toll-free passage at the toll plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge would run between 6:30am and 9:30am and also from 4:30pm till 7:30pm.

    The statement said both toll plazas will be free for motorists going to and leaving Lekki axis to allow the state’s consultants complete the traffic simulation survey started a few weeks ago.

    The toll free hours, the governor said, is to allow traffic consultants to the government carry out a comprehensive study of traffic flow around Lekki-Ikoyi-Victoria Island axes, which is part of the initiatives the government is bringing to diffuse vehicular gridlock at major business districts.

  • Worker faces N88,000 human hair theft charge

    A computer engineer, Ikechukwu Okoroafor, on Tuesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing human hair valued at N88,000 from his employer.

    Okoroafor, 28, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ingobo Emby alleged that the defendant and others at large committed the offence between July 1 and 13, at 32, Onikepo Akande Street (Road 12), Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    Emby said: “The defendant stole one 50k package of human hair valued at N50,000 and one Tam-10 human hair valued at N38,000, property of Hair by Wanneka Company.

    “A 50k packaged human hair suspected to have been stolen, or unlawfully obtained was found in the possession of the defendant.”

    Magistrate Y. O. Aro-Lambo granted Okoroafor N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He adjourned till August 21.

  • Oshodi residents, traders lament over flood

    Residents and traders at Oshodi, Lagos Mainland, on Tuesday lamented over the flood that occurred after the morning rain.

    There was a downpour in parts of Lagos yesterday, which lasted about four hours, causing traffic jam.

    Agege Motor Road was overtaken by flood, preventing roadside traders from displaying their goods.

    Our reporter, who visited parts of Oshodi, observed that some commercial buses broke down as a result of the flood, forcing passengers to push them off the road.

    Lamenting the effects of the rainfall, a trader, Mrs. Risikat Adepoju, appealed to the government to construct proper drainages at Oshodi, to solve the problem.

    She said the flood usually affected their sales because buyers disliked stepping into water.

    Another trader, Rafiu Oyewole, said the flood was caused by shops build on culverts, adding that refuse thrown into the drainages blocked them, causing flood.

  • Landlord blocks tenants’ entrance

    A civil servant, Jumoke Alonge, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly blocking her tenants’ entrance with a fence.

    Alonge, 58, who lives at Ipaja, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a charge of breach of the peace.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Kenrich Nomayo alleged that Alonge committed the offence on April 11 at 17, Ogunjobi Street, Fadeyi, Lagos.

    “Alonge conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by erecting a fence and blocking the entrance of her two tenants, Muyiwa Ogunaike and Joseph Bamidele,” Nomayo said.

    Magistrate T. A. Ojo granted Alonge N100, 000 bail with one surety in the like sum.

    She said the surety must be employed and show evidence of paying tax.

    The case continues on September 12.

  • Five die, others injured in accidents

    Five persons were on Tuesday killed and two injured in two accidents in Lagos.

    The Nation learnt that two people died at Ogba, Lagos when a Toyota Camry with number plate AAA191AR crashed into a building around 12am.

    The other three were crushed by a truck marked LSD461XD around 5pm at Agboju, along Badagry Expressway.

    It was gathered that the Ogba accident occurred at Maternity area on College Road, near Monday evening’s accident scene, which involved a truck that killed a nursing mother and injured another.

    It was gathered that the car veered off the road and crashed into the gate of a house.

    A witness said besides the driver, three passengers were in the car at the time of the accident.

    The driver and the passenger who occupied the front seat reportedly died. The other two at the back seat were said to have sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.

    It was not immediately clear what might have caused the accident, but unconfirmed reports said the occupants might have been returning from a club.

    The Agboju accident was said to have occurred after the truck entered a pothole and lost control.

    Two persons were said to have died on the spot. The third died in hospital.

    A mob was said to have attempted to lynch the driver and his motor boy, but policemen rescued them.

    Police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the accidents.

    He said investigation was on.

  • Supplier ‘dupes’ pharmacist of N4.25m

    A drug supplier, James Okafor, who allegedly obtained N4,250,000, from a pharmacist under false pretence, on Tuesday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court.

    Okafor, 49, was arraigned by the police before Mrs. M. O. Ope-Agbe on a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, stealing and assault.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji alleged that the defendant and his accomplices, who are on the run, committed the offence last September.

    He said the stolen property belonged to Wisdom Friday.

    Osuji said Okafor, with intent to defraud, obtained the money under false pretence that he was going to supply Diclofenac drugs to Friday.

    Okafor was said to have assaulted the complainant when he asked for his money on July 15.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Ope-Agbe granted Okafor N3million bail with one surety in the like sum .

    The case continues on September 12.

  • Court remands customer over sex worker’s death

    An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded in prison, a man, Bidemi Mojuba, accused of stabbing a sex worker to death, following a disagreement over payment.

    Magistrate O. A. Olagbende made the order at the instance of the prosecution.

    She remanded the defendant at Ikoyi Prison pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Olagbende ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the DPP.

    She adjourned till September 24.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Clara Olagbayi alleged that the defendant committed the offence on July 1, at his home on Corporation Estate, Amuwo Odofin.

    She alleged that the defendant took sex enhancement drugs before going to solicit for sex from the deceased, simply identified as Charity, at a nearby hotel.

    Olagbayi alleged that when they got home, Charity insisted on payment before service.

    An argument ensued following which Mojuba allegedly picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Charity multiple times.

    Also on Tuesday, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court ordered that a 38-year-old bricklayer, Kehinde David, be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons following his arraignment for allegedly defiling his wife’s 14-year-old sister.

    Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi ordered the police to return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    She adjourned till August 7.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ezekiel Ayorinde said the defendant committed the offence on June 6 at his home.

    He said the defendant beat up the minor and defiled her.
