  • Dangerous manholes

The case of a promising young Accountant, Adewura Bello who met her untimely death in a manhole on a road in Lagos State is still very fresh in our memories.

For about three years now, I have used various platforms to draw the attention of the governments, drivers, riders and pedestrians to the open manholes in Lagos and Abuja. This was a follow-up to my road traffic research assignments in Ketu area of Lagos State and Wuse Area 1 in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja).  At Ketu bus stop in Lagos State, there is a very dangerous manhole by the junction of Ketu – Ikosi road which is wide enough to swallow a tricycle. Whenever it rains, the rush of water through the manhole can move a car with speed. There are open drainage, weak wooden planks and broken concretes at different parts of the drainage along Ketu – Ikosi road. The drainage beside the Ketu market is another snare whether there is rainfall or not.

In the Federal Capital Territory, far beyond the areas of coverage of my research, dangerous open manholes have dotted virtually all the roads in Abuja. During my research, I was told that people, particularly the refuse cart pushers popularly called “BOLAR” used to steal the iron covers for the manholes. This is another demonstration of the security lapses even in the Federal Capital Territory.

These open manholes can cause harm to pedestrians, cars and other road users. The manhole can cause tyre blowout and somersault among other hazards. The government road and traffic monitoring agencies should take stock of all these open and dangerous manholes so as to replace them with welded or screwed iron covers or better still, with concrete covers. The construction companies should also change their preference to concrete manhole covers. A stitch in time saves nine.

  • Cleaner shot dead in police, hoodlums clash

Who killed 38-year-old domestic cleaner Francis Ene on Monday morning at Ajisegiri Street, Ilupeju in Odi-Olowo Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA)?

Was it the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) as alleged by residents or hoodlums according to the police?

Ene was hit by a stray bullet during a gun battle between SARS operatives and suspected members of a robbery gang at about 8am while carrying out his routine sweeping job.

The Nation reports that Ilupeju has experienced cult clashes, especially between rival groups, Eiye and Aiye, in recent time that have left no fewer than six persons dead.

There have also been allegations of robbery, rape and extortion against hoodlums in the area and those from Onipanu and Mushin.

Residents, who took to social media to protest yesterday’s killing, alleged that it was one Akeem alias Skoda, a SARS operative attached to Ladipo Sectorial Command in Mushin, who fired the bullet that hit Ene in his head.

They said the operatives were on an illegal raid in the area and fled in a silver Toyota Corolla saloon car with number plate YAB725AP they came in as soon as they confirmed that the victim was dead.

A witness told The Nation that the incident occurred at 8:10am beside the main gate of Christ Centre Primary School in Ilupeju, adding that Ene was walking in the midst of some pupils who were left terrified when the bullet hit him.

“The fleeing anti-robbery officers left the victim in a pool of blood. None of the people arrested during the raid was taken away by the fleeing officers; they were reportedly freed after learning that the victim had died,” a witness said.

When our reporter got the scene, some of the personal effects the victim had with him at the time of the incident, including a bucket, brooms, a parker and a hard brush, were found around the body.

The development led to a protest by residents, who described the incident as “another SARS killing in the area.”

It was gathered that the late Francis died a few metres away from another spot where a woman, Mrs. Adeyanju, slumped and died, following the arrest of her 16-year-old son, Muiz, during an evening raid.

The victim’s younger sister, Esther Eni, who was at her workplace in Ikeja when the incident happened, arrived on the scene at 10:13am. She broke down in tears after seeing the body in a pool of blood.

She said: “It was my brother (the late Francis) who woke me up today around 6am and asked if I was not going to work. I bathed quickly so that I would not be late. As I prepared to leave, I saw him arranging his sweeping kit. He told me that he had early morning sweeping duties in a couple of houses in the neighbourhood. Then, he bade me goodbye.

“At 8:30am, I got a call from my cousin, informing me that Francis is dead. I was confused because he never showed any sign of illness. Then, I was told SARS officers shot him in the head. I don’t know how to inform our ageing parents in the village. These SARS people have ruined us. How do we get justice?”

Attempts by plain-clothes policemen from Ilupeju Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), to take the body away were stopped by the residents, leading to an argument.

In the ensuing melee, the DPO allegedly called for reinforcement from the Area “F” Command in Ikeja, which led to the deployment of anti-riot policemen and anti-cultism squad in the area. This resulted in sporadic shootings, with residents scampering for safety. The police raided houses on the street and adjoining streets to arrest protesters. The body was taken away in a police van on the order of the Area “F” commander.

When the bereaved family went to complain about the incident at the SARS Sectorial Command in Ladipo, Mushin, the vehicle used for the raid by the SARS officers was allegedly found on the premises.

Our reporter also saw the Toyota Corolla car at the station.

The victim’s family demanded justice, calling on the command to fish out the “killer-officers”.

The victim’s cousin, David Abore, recalled his last moment with the deceased, saying Ene had already completed his sweeping duty in some houses.

He said the victim was shot while he was going to do his job on the street.

David said: “Before he left for sweeping, he went to feed the chickens he was rearing in a cage he kept them. In his usual character, he jovially told neighbours not to open the cage whenever he left for his sweeping job, so that the chickens would not escape. We all laughed and left. The next thing we heard was that he had been shot dead by SARS.”

Residents described the late Ene as “easy-going and jovial”. He was said to be fond of entertaining children in the neighbourhood, which earned him a nickname, ‘Uncle’.

A statement by police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), claimed that the operatives had gone to the area with a notorious suspect, Ikechukwu Monye, 39, to identify their armoury and were attacked by suspected members of the gang.

Elkana claimed that the incident happened around 7:30am, adding that Ene was killed by a bullet from the assailants, who shot sporadically to disrupt the operation.

“Reinforcement was quickly drafted to the scene. The whole area was cordoned off to apprehend members of the gang and bring them to justice.

“The gang in question is responsible for robberies at Ilupeju and its environs. They have been on the wanted list of the police for murder of six persons during the three robberies they carried out.

“The command condemns in totality, the senseless killings of innocent persons by those criminal elements and will not tolerate attacks on its personnel by criminals.

“The command has vowed to end the activities of this deadly gang. The public are enjoined to remain calm, as the command has intensified patrols and surveillance in the affected areas.

“The body of the victim of this violent attack has been removed and deposited at the mortuary for post-mortem. The command extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that justice will prevail,” he said.

  • Sex-for-mark: I was set up, says lecturer

A lecturer at the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Olaleye Aduwo, who was alleged to have been involved in ”sex- for-mark” scandal, on Monday denied attempting to have carnal knowledge of a female student.

The lecturer, in a 29-second video that went viral about a month ago, was accused of attempting to sexually exploit one of his students for mark.

In the footage, the lecturer was tortured, harassed and dehumanised by people brought by the student.

Since the incident happened, the lecturer has kept mute, except the defence he presented before a panel set up by the university to investigate the matter.

Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Aduwo, in an emotion laden voice, expressed regret over the issue, which he claimed was a deliberate attempt to tarnish his hard-earned integrity and reputation.

He said: “Although the incident came to me as a surprise and it is still under investigation, I urge the public to disregard any misleading information circulated on social media, as such was not true.”

Aduwo added: “The student in question is more or less like a daughter and a friend to my daughter. Hence, I couldn’t have asked her for sex.

“On the fateful day, some unknown hoodlums, suspected to be cultists, numbering about 15, suddenly invaded my house on Ikere Road, Ado-Ekiti, through the connivance of the student in question, to molest me.

“I had just had dinner with my friend, Mr. Allen Akinmudiro, in my apartment when the incident occurred around 10pm.

“The female student, who is a friend to my daughter, arrived and joined in the dinner. I never knew she had an ulterior motive.

“After the meal, the student signalled to the hoodlums, who wasted no time as they stormed my house, rough-handled me, stripped me naked right in my sitting room with my friend Allen and subjected me to torture. They beat me up with harmful objects”.

He alleged that the hoodlums came with guns and other weapons, saying he had no choice but to obey their instructions so as not to endanger his life. Aduwo said efforts by the landlord and neighbours to rescue him failed, as they were threatened with guns and had to run for their lives.

He said the incident was a clear assault and not sex-for-mark as widely circulated.

  • Police parade 13 suspected kidnappers of Daura district head

The police on Monday paraded 13 suspects who were directly linked to the kidnap of the district head of Daura in Katsina State.

Also paraded were 27 others for their alleged involvement in murder, cattle rustling, armed robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.

The district head, Magajin Garin Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar Daura, was kidnapped at his home in Daura on May 1.

He was rescued on July 2 by operatives from IGP Intelligence Response Team led by DCP Abba Kyari.

Of the 13 of the suspects paraded, four are from Daura, while eight are from states in the North.

One other suspect is from Niger Republic.

Two of the suspects are said to have undergone training in Libya. The suspects said they were trained in Libya in musketry and how to disarm members of the Armed Forces and police plus other terrorism related training.

The suspects are Aminu Saleh, Yusuf Dahiru, Abdullahi Mohammed, Bilal Yusuf, Sarfilu Abdu, Dahiru Musa, Tukur Bukar, Ibrahim Ibrahim, Mohammed Saidu, Abubakar Adamu, Mustapha Zakariyya, Ibrahim Mohammed and Bako Mustapha.

Recovered from them are four Ak47 rifles with serial numbers: NO::24389, NO::60733, NO:: 23197, NO:: 26858, two berretta pistols, five AK47 magazines, 145 live ammunition, four dark eye glasses, masks, documents, phones, three hand grenade of military calibre and one police berretta.

Laptops with video clips of how explosives are made and other manuals of how other dangerous weapons are made are also said to be contained in the system recovered from them.

The suspects demanded $30million ransom from the families of the victim, but they said nothing was paid before he was rescued by police operatives.

The suspects were also said to be responsible for  kidnapping and killing of expatriates who own and work at Mothercat Construction Companies in Kano and Kaduna states.

The Force spokesman, Frank Mba, who spoke during the parade, said: “From our analysis, we discovered that the suspects comprised persons from different states and backgrounds. They are males with the average age of 30. The oldest is 46, while the youngest is 20. The youngest played the key role in the whole operation.

“We discovered that there are external collaborators because one of them is from Niger Republic. The gang is also powered by local criminals and operators because the plan was orchestrated by someone from Katsina State.”

Mba said the successes recorded by the operatives were due to the concept of community policing, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the concept be implemented across the country.

He called for stringent legislation to help tackle the menace of kidnapping and cattle rustling.

He said: “We are using this opportunity to call for the strengthening of the legislation as it relates to the crime of kidnapping and cattle rustling.”

Our lawmakers at all levels should review laws bordering on kidnapping.

“They should come up with stronger and stringent laws so that Police and other security agencies will be better empowered because our effort will amount to nothing without uniformed legislation.” Mba said the suspects would be prosecuted in competent courts upon the conclusion of investigation.

  • Police launch manhunt as gunmen kidnap Siasia’s mum, two others

The police on Monday began a manhunt for the abductors of Madam Beauty Ogere Siasia, the octogenarian mother of a former coach of the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia and two other women in Bayelsa State.

It was gathered from security sources that the 80-year-old woman and the two other victims were taken away from their homes at Odoni community in Sagbama Local Government by gunmen.

In November 2015, the same fate befell Madam Beauty when kidnappers took her away in a similar operation and kept her in their den for about 13 days.

Siasia was then in Gambia preparing the country’s team for the U-23 Africa qualifier for 2016 Rio Olympic.

About four years later, abductors returned to the community at about 2am, shot sporadically and kidnapped the woman, whose family said, was undergoing treatment for hypertension.

Sources said the gunmen raided the homes of two other families in the community and abducted two other women, including a mother, whose son owns a local funeral service firm known in the area as “Do Nana”.

Dennis, the younger brother to coach Siasia, confirmed the abduction, lamenting that the hoodlums kidnapped their mother, leaving behind her hypertension drugs and phone.

He said: “The abductors have not contacted the family. We have reported to the police. The kidnappers didn’t allow her to take along her drugs. Even if they ask her for our numbers, she will not be able to help because she cannot remember phone numbers. We are praying, hoping that she will be released soon.”

However, the police in a statement by spokesman Butswat Asinim said they had launched a manhunt to locate the whereabouts of the kidnappers and rescue their victims.

He said: “On July 15, at about 0200hours, hoodlums who were heavily armed came through the waterways of the River Nun and invaded the home of Mrs. Beauty Siasia, female, 80, in the riverine village of Odoni in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and took her away through the waterways to an unknown destination.

“The police commissioner and the command’s Tactical Team have visited the crime scene. The command, in collaboration with other security stakeholders, has launched a manhunt to arrest the killers and rescue the victims. Investigation is on.”

Residents have decried resurgence of kidnapping in the state, especially on the Agbere and Odoni axes of Sagbama.

Harrison Siasia, the 93-year-old husband of the victim and father of coach Siasia, was shocked. He cried uncontrollably following the abduction of his wife.

Harrison, who is said to be the oldest in the community, lamented that the people that abducted his wife lacked the fear of God.

He wondered how his wife could survive the recent abduction and begged the kidnappers to return her alive.

  • Housekeeper arraigned for alleged theft of passports

A teenage housekeeper, Ofonime John, was on Monday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for alleged theft of her employer’s international passports.

John, 19, who lives in Ogun State, is facing a count charge of stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye told the court that the defendant committed the offence at 10am on July 1, on Grace Court Estate, Makoko, Yaba.

She said the defendant worked for the complainant, Mrs. Modupe Olubamowo, for over a year before she stole her passport with UK 10-year visa and an expired one.

Olaluwoye said the complainant kept the passports in a cupboard in her room, from where the defendant stole them and ran away.

“My lord, the defendant claimed that she had to rush to her village because her mother was ill.

“It was after she left that the complainant noticed that her passports were missing and she reported to the police.

“They contacted the agent that connected her (defendant) to the complainant and she was brought back,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offence contravenes Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Chief Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

She said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case continues on September 11.

  • Three remanded for alleged robbery

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded three men at Kirikiri Prison following their arraignment for alleged robbery.

Yusuf Tajudeen, 21; Salisu Kabiri, 20; and Abubakar Sani, 22; are being tried for conspiracy and robbery.

Chief Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oni ordered that they be kept at Kirikiri, pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Dan-Oni adjourned till August 8.

Prosecuting Inspector Victor Eruada said the men committed the offence with others at large on June 9 at PPL bus stop, Ojo, Lagos.

He said the suspects armed themselves with cutlasses and kitchen knife, attacked Zuwaira Nasiru and robbed her of a Tecno phone worth N13,000 and an itel phone valued at N25,000.

Eruada said the defendants also robbed Sumaila Abu of a Samsung phone worth N12,000 and N10,000 cash.

  • Ijegun residents demand security patrol, fire station

Some residents of Ijegun, the scene of a pipeline explosion, where many died, have called for regular security patrol, establishment of a fire service station and the rebuilding of their canal.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that the government should also relocate a public school near the pipeline for the pupils sake.

Former vice chairman of Landlords’ Association, Catholic Mission Street, Augustine Mbuba, said the residents had been living in fear of the unknown.

“Our people cannot sleep anymore. Imagine that five days after the last explosion, some vandals shifted to another location to open up another pipeline that would have caused another explosion.

“Thanks to a vigilance group and security agents who scared them away before they could complete their task of syphoning fuel with their gadgets,” he said.

A retiree of the Nigerian National Shipping Line,  Roland Ejere, called for improved security in the community.

He suggested that pipelines be buried deeper to make it difficult for vandals to access.

“A solution is to bury these pipelines deeper,” Ejere told NAN during a condolence visit to the widow of a victim of the July 4 explosion, Mr. Nnabuife Emerokwem.

A bookshop owner, Mrs. Victoria Osigwe, asked that the artisans around the pipeline should be moved to ply their trade elsewhere.

A landlord, Okwudili Arachie, urged the government to work on the canal in the community where fuel flowed into during pipeline explosions.

He said the government should channel the canal so that water or fuel from it would not get into houses.

“The canal has been affected by erosion, which is why it has expanded too close to our houses, especially the houses of those who lost their lives during the last explosion.

“The authorities should put the canal in shape and cover it so that any form of fuel flow will not get into people’s homes, but be controlled,” Arachie said.

A businesswoman, Mrs. Agbo Joy, appealed for the relocation of the school near the pipeline saying:

“The last disaster would have been worse if children were in school because the fire got to the walls of the school.”

According to her, pupils lost their lives in the May 2008 pipeline explosion during a stampede.

A teacher, Gerald Emejom, asked for the relocation of the gas and fuel stations near the pipelines.

He lamented that many victims of pipeline explosions were not connected with vandalism.

A Catholic cleric, Rev. Fr. Andrew Abhulime, called for more stringent punishment for the vandals to deter others.

“The government should fight causes and not effects or symptoms. If there are no visible consequences for individuals who steal public heritages, then, these public evils and effects will always flourish,” he said.

  • ‘I slept with my in-law thinking it was my husband’

A trader, Mrs. Kudirat Ajayi, on Monday told an Igando Customary Court that she slept with her brother-in-law because she mistook him for her husband.

Her husband, Akande, is seeking the dissolution of their 35-year-old marriage. He accused her of infidelity.

“I was in bed in the night when my husband’s younger brother came to the house my husband rented for me.

“I thought it was my husband who normally comes to the house at that particular time between 9pm and 10pm to play and sleep with me.

“It was after he finished making love to me that I realised that he was not my husband.

“When I queried him, he claimed that my husband had travelled. That was why he came to have sex with me.

“I reported the case to my brother’s wife, who advised me not to tell my brother so that peace can reign in the family,” the respondent said.

Kudirat, 52, said her husband treated the children of his other wives better than hers.

The mother of four denied being fetish as alleged by her husband.

She prayed the court not to dissolve her marriage because she still loved her husband.

Akande accused his wife of waywardness and adultery, adding that her lover was claiming the paternity of one of their children.

“When I married her, I rented an apartment for her because I have other wives and I don’t want them to live together.

“I started hearing from neighbours that my wife was having an affair with a man. Initially I ignored the information until her lover came, claiming paternity of one of my children.

“The man eventually came to the house, but I refused to open the door for him.

“When I questioned my wife, she confessed that the man slept with her, but it did not result in pregnancy,” Akande added.

The 71-year-old businessman said his wife was fetish.

“I once caught her burying something in my compound. I accosted her and tried to remove what she buried there, but I could not.

“I went out. Before I returned, she had cemented the place.”

He urged the court to dissolve the union, saying he was no longer interested in it.

The petitioner said his love for the respondent had faded.

The court President, Mr. Adeniyi Koledoye, advised the parties to maintain peace and fixed judgment for August 22.

  • Thief jailed four years

An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a driver, Adeyemi Adeshina, to 48 months imprisonment for stealing N326,000 from a colleague’s mobile banking application.

Magistrate M. O. Ope-Agbe convicted Adeshina, 47, after he pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of stealing.

She sentenced Adeshina to 12 months imprisonment on each of the counts, without an option fine.

Mrs. Ope-Agbe said the sentences would run concurrently, meaning that Adeshina would spend only 12 months in jail.

Reviewing the case, Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji said Adeshina committed the offences on December 7, 8 and 10, 2018, at 1A, 2nd Street, Osborne Foreshore Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos.

He said the convict stole N326,000 in three tranches from John Wamdeo through a mobile transfer.

Osuji said the complainant used to ask the convict to help him transfer money with his phone.

“On the day in question, Adeshina transferred N100,000 three times from Wamdeo’s Diamond Bank mobile App into his own Guaranty Trust Bank account no. 0268789586 without Wamdeo’s knowledge.

“He also stole N26,000 which the complainant gave him to keep, making all the money stolen to be N326, 000,” he said.
