  • ‘113m people face food insecurity’

No fewer than 113 million people are experiencing high levels of food insecurity in the world, The Companion, an association of Muslim in Business and Professions National President, Alhaji Wale Sonaike, said on Wednesday.

Quoting the Global Report on last year’s Food Crisis, Sonaike said Nigeria was named as one of the eight countries most affected in the world.

“These eight countries accounted for two-thirds of the total number of people facing acute food insecurity, amounting to nearly 72 million people,” he quoted the report.

He spoke at a briefing on the forthcoming 4th National Discourse scheduled for Sunday at University of Lagos Main Auditorium now named J.F. Ade-Ajayi auditorium.

Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo will lead immediate past Governor of Osun State Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, a renowned expert in Agricultural-Engineering and former University of Uyo Vice Chancellor Prof Fola Lasisi, Prof Lateef Sanni of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Coordinator, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Otunba Femi Oke as well as an expert in Animal Production from the University of Ilorin, Dr Hameed Badmos, among others dignitaries to the event.

Speaking on the theme: Food security: Unleashing Nigeria’s natural potential for self-sufficiency, Alhaji Sonaike said it is regrettable that Nigeria despite ranked as the highest producer of yam and cassava worldwide, is categorised as a food insecure nation with heavy reliance on importation of grains, livestock products and fish. “With a projected population of over 233 million by 2025, the concern for food security in the nearest future is palpable and calls for concern and immediate action by the populace and the government at all levels,” he said.

He said the association focus on food security for this year’s discourse “because food undoubtedly is the most basic of all human survival needs and the starting chain of the economy as well as the base for daily life.”

Food and agriculture by extension, he added, is also a fundamental pillar for economic growth and development as a nation can hardly achieve and sustain its economic growth without a strong agricultural base and the reasons are obvious.

“Nigeria has correctly identified food and agricultural production among others as one of the areas to focus on the growth and diversification of the economy. This has started to yield results to the extent that Nigeria has become the largest economy in Africa, yet ironically, the country is still categorised as one of the few countries with high incidents of extreme poverty. This is paradoxical and calls for an expert investigation. In the light of these, we felt that experts should be called together to engage in a meaningful discourse to proffer solutions,” he said.

Sonaike urged the federal government to take more drastic measures towards combating insecurity in the country, adding that incidents of community invasion, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, among others have become so rampant that lives and property are no longer safe.

“Millions of farmers have either been displaced from their farmlands or dispossessed of their farmland. All of these have a negative impact on food production and constitute a major threat to food security no matter the beauty of agricultural policy put in place.

“While we commend the government on the decision to recruit 10,000 police men , in a bit to combat this menace, it is unfortunate, however, that many years after this pronouncement; the recruitment is still in progress. What does it really take to recruit 10,000 policemen in the midst of millions of unemployed youth in the country? Those concerned should be called to order,” he said.

  • Panic as another pipeline explosion averted at Ijegun

Five days after pipelines explosion that rocked Ijegun, a Lagos suburb, residents of the area were in a panic after news filtered that the vandals were back to resume their illegal activities.

The Nation learnt that many residents flee their homes on Tuesday midnight.

They did not return until around 5am after police allegedly chased the vandals away.

A resident, Oke Olayemi, who spoke with The Nation, said some guys started moving from one street to another in the midnight, calling residents to wake up.

Olayemi said the boys were shouting ‘these boys are back again!’

He said: “This time, some other boys in the area down to Ijedodo came out to sensitise the residents. So, we had to run for our lives. Many people left their homes and ran away fearing likely fire outbreak.

“Around 4am , I had to call the police station to alert them of our observation that these guys came since 12 O’Clock and they started loading their trucks with fuel. Another resident, Chuks Anthony, said the police arrived the scene chased vandals away.

“By 2am, they called us that these guys have arrived. They started by phoning but they came around 12 midnight. One of our landlords was the one who alerted us that they were around. They came with a number of trucks. What they came to do was illegal. So, in fact, it’s unimaginable. We were told that these guys are armed and they are big boys. It is not just small boys doing this operation. It’s all these street boys that have filing station around us here that are doing this nonsense because we were told that what they are selling are illegal fuel siphoned. That’s where they get their supply. We need security; we want protections from them because they will soon damage people’s lives,” Anthony said.

According to him, one of the victims died on Tuesday morning in hospital.

“A family very close to my place there lost one of their sisters on Tuesday morning because of that fire incident that happened or something. She died in one of these neighbouring hospitals around us here,” he said.

“However, my men have collected all the tools and pipes they came with for their operation. Although we are yet to apprehend the vandal, an investigation is going on,” Akinlade told NAN.

  • Ijegun fire: Lagos will ensure your comfort, Sanwo-Olu assures survivors

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday assured survivors of the Ijegun fire incident that everything will be done by the government to bring comfort to them.

The governor gave the assurance when he visited the survivors at the Gbagada General Hospital yesterday.

Sanwo-Olu who spoke with the survivors at the hospital said, “I have encourage them and ordered that anything that will bring comfort to the survivors should be done immediately. I have assured them that we will ensure that they all remain alive.”

He, however, advised that people should always stay away from things that can bring loss of lives and property in Lagos.

Answering reporters’ question earlier before the visit, Sanwo-Out said the incident was unfortunate, adding that the state government has responded officially to the unfortunate incident.

The governor said: “A lot of our agencies have responded immediately and have done the needful to ensure the residents get utmost care.

“It is a secure site. It is a site that NNPC raised an immediate alarm. It is a national treasure and asset that has led to security concerns. Issues of pipeline vandalism are a serious national issue. So the federal Government is taking it up officially.

“For me and my deputy, we refused to make a camera show there not because we are not doing the necessary things to those that suffered burns or the relatives of those that died in the unfortunate incident but because it is a crime scene and security operatives are working there.

“You will realise that rather than visit and make camera show, we have since the commencement of the explosion taken full responsibility for the care of the survivors in the hospitals. They are responding to treatment, it is unfortunate that some of the survivors suffered severe burns.”

The governor pleaded with Lagosians to understand the gravity of vandalising pipelines, saying: “these are very dangerous things. We all should desist from making economic gains from something like this. They are very volatile and dangerous. People should not, at the risk of economic benefit, endanger their lives and others within the community.”

He promised that the government will continue to work with the security operatives so that “we will not shy away from apprehending culprits and let then face the full wrath of the law.

“We are urging the residents within the community to contact the emergency toll-free lines whenever they see people going closer to the facilities at odd hours, they should contact the RRS and others immediately.

“They can easily come and apprehend the perpetrators. We are hoping that we can get a lasting solution to the issue”, he said.

  • Mallam Isiyaku Abdullahi’s Appointment: A ground-breaking achievement for Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry

Mallam Isiyaku Abdullahi’s Appointment: A ground-breaking achievement for Nigeria’s Petroleum Industry

With Nigeria’s state-run firm, NNPC, getting a new group managing director and a team of seven chief operating officers (COOs), additional senior appointments have been made. In essence, the state-run firm will have a complete changing of the guard that started on June 20 with the naming of Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari as Maikanti Baru’s replacement, and Abdullahi Isiyaku, as the new General Manager, Finance and Accounts of NNPC Pension.

Sources said that the newly-promoted personnel would fill the vacancies that arose from the appointment of Kyari and his COOs some 17 days ago by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Apart from the promotions, NNPC also terminated the services of some personnel it deemed unneeded. The decision, it was gathered, was in line with Kyari’s thoughts on how to run an efficient corporation and Abdullahi’s advice on financial discipline for the country’s future.

Isiyaku Abdullahi is an exceptional business strategist within the Nigeria petroleum industry since 1993. His appointment by President Buhari came at a perilous time when the industry’s accounting and financial sector is in dire need of a miraculous turnaround.

Among those promoted were Musa Lawal Group General Manager (GGM) of National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS); and Mansur Sambo, as Managing Director of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC). On the list also were Adokiye Tombomieye, who would oversee the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD) of NNPC as its GGM; and Bala Wunti, who takes over as the Managing Director of the Pipeline and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) of NNPC.

There was also Meyiwa Eyesan, who was promoted as the new GGM, Corporate Planning and Strategy (CP&S) of NNPC, while Kate Iheme took over as the new Managing Director of the National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO).

Others on the promotion list were Salihu Jamari, who now heads the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) as its Managing Director and Yinka Adeyemo, who became General Manager, Planning and Commercial of the NPDC. Bassey Essiet, General Manager, Planning and Business Development of NNPC’s Downstream Directorate; Chris Ugwu, General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) of the NPDC; as well as Billy Okoye, who will now run NNPC Retail, as its Managing Director.

  • Senate to Presidency: we’re waiting for ministerial nominees

The Senate on Tuesday said that it is prepared to receive the list of ministerial nominees from the Presidency any time it is submitted.

The Upper Chamber also said the apparent delay in the submission of the ministerial list by President Muhammadu Buhari will not prevent senators from embarking on their scheduled annual vacation.

The National Assembly is scheduled to commence its annual vacation at the end of July, 2019.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, who addressed reporters in Abuja said that it was not the duty of the Senate to determine when the ministerial list would be submitted to it.

Adeyeye also said the Senate is not constitutionally empowered to request for the list from the Presidency.

The Senate, he said, will wait until the president decides to send the list to it.

Adeyeye said: “That is the prerogative of the Executive. We are not going to help them to do their job. The Senate cannot generate the list of ministers on its own.

“It is the prerogative of the president to send his ministerial nominee list to the Senate and when he does that we will consider it.

“That is our constitutional mandate. It is not even within our powers to even advise. We will wait until the matter is transmitted to us.

“The executives are aware of the timetable of the Senate. There is a particular time the Senate will go on recess.

“That being in mind they should be mindful of when they will carry out this constitutional responsibility.

“That is our constitutional mandate but it is not within our power to even advise or anything, so we will wait until the list is submitted. I will not say anything more than that.

“I don’t think this matter should worry any Nigerian. We are supposed to receive the letter with the list of ministerial nominee transmitted to the Senate.

“If a thing is not my job why should it worry me? When the list comes to us, Nigerians will look at the time the list arrives here and the time the list is approved.

“Let me tell you one thing, the executives are aware and most Nigerians are aware of the timetable of the Senate.

“There is a particular time of the year when the Senate will go on recess that being in mind, they should be mindful of when to carry out this constitutional responsibility because the Senate itself has its own timetable.

“Like the judiciary is right now on recess, a lot of judges have travelled out except those handling election matters.

“So in the same way, there will be a time, very soon when the Senate will go in recess.

“I think the Executives are mindful of this to know the timetable of the Senate and it is left to them to adjust to that timetable or not.

“When the matter comes before us, we will look at it and carry out our constitutional responsibility.”

He added that one of the 775 containers recovered last week was empty.

He made this disclosure to journalists in Abuja.

Mohammed noted that despite the massive investment that the power sector has recorded from the transmission end, the distribution companies are yet to match with a proportional upgrade of their equipment.

This, according to him, is now accountable for the frequent system collapses in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry.

He revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari is in support of the recapitalization of the DisCos.

He said that TCN is yet to get an approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission for the procurement of 230mw spinning reserve.

  • Assault: Drama as Abbo defiant at Senate probe panel

There was a mild drama on Tuesday at the Senate investigative hearing on the alleged assault levelled against Adamawa Senator Elisha Abbo.

The embattled senator boasted that he was not afraid of suspension.

The upper chamber  last week resolved to raise an ad-hoc committee to probe allegation of assault against Senator Abbo at an Abuja adult toy’s shop.

The probe degenerated when Abbo appeared before the seven-member committee and declined to talk on the matter.

Abbo claimed that the case for which he was being investigated was already before a court.

The embattled senator noted that even if he wanted to speak on the mater, he would prefer to talk in camera.

Miffed by the senator’s attitude, the  panel members said the embattled senator cannot dictate to them.

They told him of the consequence of his action and asked him to comply, but the senator insisted that he cannot be threatened with suspension.

He said: “I cannot talk because the matter is in court. Why should I be talking before the camera. I cannot talk.

“I cannot be speaking before this committee because that would be subjudice since the matter under investigation is already before the court. So, why should I be facing the camera.

A member of the committee, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, told her colleagues that the senator cannot dictate to the committee.

She reminded Abbo that he could be suspended as a result of what transpired in the video that went viral.

Mrs. Tinubu said: “Distinguished senators, we want to tell you that you are just joining us. We also have have a procedure.

“What we are doing, we are doing it as a legislature . Everybody deserves a fair hearing. What is going on with you, affects us as a body. That is why the Senate President constituted this committee. You can see the level and integrity of members of the committee.

“You don’t come here and dictate to us, the procedure we are supposed to follow. You are undermining us by trying to do that. You are not even listening to us.

“Even if we are going beyond what you expect, you can’t stop us. Do you want us to protect you, defend you or do you want to be on your own?

Responding to Mrs. Tinubu’s comment, Abbo said: You cannot threaten me with suspension. It is not out of place for me to say am not addressing the press.

“I came because I received a text message from the committee. I will talk to the media. I should address the committee in closed door.”

The committee members, however, agreed that Senator Abbo should speak to the committee behind closed doors.

Before the committee went into a closed session, Abbo said that he decided to apologize last week in order to protect the institution of the Senate.

He added that the matter happened before he became a senator, pointing out that the incident had been overtaken by events.

Counsel to the victim of the assault, Solola &Akpana who appeared before committee informed the panel that the victim was in the hospital.

He claimed that they did not know when she was going to leave the hospital.

The counsel declined to make any statement on the matter.
