  • Woman stabs brother to death in Kano

19-year-old woman Mariya Suleiman, of Badawa Quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, was on Saturday, arrested by the police for allegedly stabbing her 30-year-old brother, Sani Suleiman, to death, following a dispute between them.

Kano State Police Command Spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), said the command, through its Badawa Divisional office, received a report at about 5pm on Saturday, that the woman had stabbed her elder brother on his neck.

Kiyawa said it was learnt that Mariya had been engaging in a heated argument with her brother for two days.

The woman was said to have suddenly stabbed her brother on the neck.

Suleiman was rushed to the hospital but died.

Kiyawa said an argument ensued because the late Suleiman allegedly maltreated his sister’s baby.

But eyewitnesses claimed that the cause of the incident was the refusal of Suleiman to organise a traditional wedding for two of his younger sisters.

The Ward Head of Unguwan Gaya Badawa , Alhaji Haliru Mohammed, expressed shock, over the incident, adding that the parents of the accused and the victim, lost consciousness when the news was broken to them.

Alhaji Mohammed said they were receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The late Suleiman had been buried according to Islamic rites.

The Police spokesman said Kano State Police Commissioner (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered the transfer of the case from Badawa Division to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), at the Police Headquarters, Bompai, for further investigation.

  • Anambra to build hostels for colleges

The Anambra State government plans to build over 700-capacity hostels in all technical schools across the state, it was learnt on Sunday

Commissioner for Basic Education Prof. Kate Omenugha spoke at the weekend during a retreat organised for stakeholders in the education sector in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area.

She said the government envisioned an education that will make students practically relevant after graduation.

Omenugha canvassed for improved funding to ensure inclusive education for all children.

Governor Willie Obiano, who opened the retreat, described education as a critical enabler in the life of individuals and the society.

Obiano, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, said the retreat was to get stakeholders acquainted with the education policy of his administration.

“The government is passionate about investing in education to ensure the proper application of technical education in promoting development,” he said.

The governor urged education administrators to deploy robust strategies in transforming the sector.

A former Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Prof. Uche Amasigo, called for sustained efforts to arrest the girl-child dropout in some councils.

  • ‘No gun cache in Anambra’

The Anambra State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that guns belonging to herdsmen were discovered at Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.

A statement by the spokesman, Haruna Mohammed, urged the public to disregard the story, describing it as a figment of the imagination of mischief makers.

There was palpable tension in the area on Saturday following rumours that guns, reportedly kept by herdsmen for a possible attack, were discovered by some children who went to fetch firewood.

The report alleged that about 50 AK-47 were discovered.

But Mohammed warned those circulating such stories to desist or be ready to face the wrath of the law.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a story that some children went to fetch firewood at Okija and discovered about 50 AK-47 hidden by herdsmen in wait for their planned assault. The children thereafter reported to some elders who handed the rifles over to the Police.

“The story is false and orchestrated by mischief makers who are bent on creating chaos in the state to achieve their selfish desires. Persons circulating this inciting publication are warned to desist forthwith as any one apprehended will face the wrath of the law.”

The command reassured the people of adequate protection, urged them to disregard the rumour and go about their legitimate business without fear of any molestation.

  • APC has unfinished business, says Osoba

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Aremo Olusegun Osoba has highlighted the challenges the ruling party should overcome to make it live up to expectation.

He said the party must implement ‘checks and balances’ built into its constitution, set up its Board of Trustees (BoT) as a mechanism for conflict resolution and give operative content to restructuring as enshrined in its constitution.

Osoba reflected on the three cardinal imperatives in his memoir, ‘Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politics,’ which will be presented to the public today at the Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In the book, he stated that the Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, urged him to collaborate with former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel to unseat former Governor Ibikunle Amosun in 2015.

The former Ogun State governor, who traced the history of the APC to efforts to formed alliance in post-2003 period, said the non-implementation of certain provisions of the party have created obstacles.

Osoba said the final alliance among the progressive forces and a section of the conservative bloc, despite their failed attempts in 2003, 2007 and 2011, fulfilled the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s prediction about “explosion” in which the forces of “the thesis and the antithesis” will disappear to pave the way for “the synthesis.”

But, he maintained that “the non-implementation of some of the provisions of the interim constitution of the APC was another issue.”

Osoba noted that the APC Constitution Drafting Committee of the Merger Group was made up of dedicated and experienced political veterans, including Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Alhaji Abubakar Malami (SAN), Dr. Chris Ngige, Adebayo Shittu and Prof. Osagie Ehiniare.

He recalled that the committee, which met for two months at the residence of former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa, examined the constitutions of major political parties, particularly their strengths and weaknesses.

Osoba lamented that some aspects of the draft constitution were not implemented, stressing that the negligence had created “loads of obstacles.”

He stressed: “Unfortunately, non-implementation of checks and balances that we built into our draft is haunting us to date. We knew that there would be loads of obstacles for a new party like APC. For this reason, we provided for the Board of Trustees to, among other functions, act as the wise body to handle conflict resolution. We replicated this body with state caucuses at the state level. The party is yet to inaugurate this crucial and important apex body.”

The APC stalwart also pointed out that “at state branches, the Harmonisation Committee that was to handle the affairs of the body and organise congresses was not set up in many states.

Osoba said a major error was the handing over of party affairs to sitting governors in some states, adding that the unconstitutional action became a big source of collision among leaders in states where there were no elected governors.

Citing Ogun State chapter as a theatre of conflict, he recalled: “The then Southwest chairman of the party, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, made elaborate arrangements to conduct elections of members of the Harmonisation Committee on January 10, 2014. He was already on his way to Abeokuta when he was told the exercise had been cancelled. Delegates and party members who were waiting for Otunba Adebayo were attacked and wounded by organised hoodlums at the party secretariat. This was the beginning of a political explosion that led to the creation of factions in Ogun State.”

Osoba reflected on the ‘restructuring’ controversy, emphasising that it was a cardinal provision of the APC constitution. The elder statesman acknowledged that the Southwest APC chieftains have continued to bear the blame for its non-implementation by their kith and kin.

He said: “As the party grapples with challenges of governance, one area that requires honest attention is the issue of restructuring. The raging debate about restructuring was actually examined by the APC merger committee in details. It was unanimously agreed that we should include the issue in our manifesto, which states that ‘the APC will initiate an action to mend the Nigerian Constitution with a view to devolving powers, duties and responsibilities to states in order to entrench true federalism and federal spirit.

“It has been a serious source of irritation to me when those of us from the Southwest are turned into punching bags by fellow Awoists who continuously lambast us as abandoning Awo’s philosophy of true federalism. Restructuring, in line with the vision espoused in our manifesto, is an idea whose time has come.”

Osoba accused Adebanjo of blatant distortions in his autobiography, ‘Telling It as It Is,” saying that made allegations against him about fraternity with former President Olusegun Obasanjo were destructive.

He complained that “Chief Adebanjo seemed desperate to hang a noose of Obasanjo collaborator on his neck.”

Osoba said despite the fact that he was not present at the drafting of the agenda of the meeting with Obasanjo by Afenifere chieftains, led by the late Senator Abraham Adesanya, who later called him to join the parley with the former president on his second term at his Ota farm, Adebanjo deliberately peddled falsehood to malign him.

The former governor said the meeting point between him and Adebanjo was Chief Awolowo, who never discriminated against him.

Osoba said his problem with Adebanjo stemmed from his unwillingness to see things from other people’s perspectives, adding that he lacked that essential quality which marked Awolowo out.

He recalled that in 2015, he refused entreaties from Adebanjo to join forces with Daniel to unseat Amosun, adding that it was evident that they were working for former President Goodluck Jonathan in Ogun State.

Osoba said: “It is true Chief Adebanjo appealed relentlessly that I should collaborate with them in SDP to join Daniel who was then Labour to unseat Amosun. I refused these entreaties. I recall he invited me and my wife to his house on July 29, 2014. Chief Adebanjo stated that he wanted my supporters to collaborate with Daniel on the 2015 election.

“It was my wife who gave the response. She said: “Today, July 29, is my brother’s 60th birthday and ordinarily, I would be with him to celebrate, but his support for Daniel in 2003 has strained our relationship.” It was clear that her reply conveyed the level of our opposition to what Daniel represents, but in spite of my wife’s explanation, Chief Adebanjo still insisted I should work with Daniel.”

Osoba said his ready of Ogun politics did not convince him to pursue the path recommended by Adebanjo, adding that “subsequent events showed that the grand design was to put in place a machinery to endorse and work for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election.”

He stressed: “Daniel’s latter-day emergence as coordinator of Jonathan’s campaign in the Southwest and the putrid smell of financial deals attributed to the arms scandals in the twilight days of the Jonathan presidency vindicate my reading of the time.

“My main problem with with Chief Adebanjo is his unwillingness to see things from another people’s perspectives. In this regard, he lacks a basic ingredients in Chief Awolowo’s make up, which is the ability to see the other point of view and allow for disputations until the best ideas emerged. Where you disagree with Adebanjo, he goes all out to demonise, masquerading it as principled disagreement.

“I have always accorded him the respect befitting his age and antecedents, but he epitomizes the tendency to always dictate, never granting the other party a modicum of intelligence, if thing are not seen from his perspective. It is an unproductive trait that limits the frontiers of cooperation and extension of influence.”

  • ‘Buhari should appoint committed party members’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint only core and committed members of the party as ministers.

It said the president should resist the temptation of appointing those who want to reap where they did not sow, or persons who would constitute a cog in the wheel of progress.

Chairman Ben Nwoye, who spoke after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at the party’s secretariat, noted that state chapters across the country suffered serious setbacks during the first tenure of President Buhari due to appointment of non-core party members as ministers and into other key positions.

The party, which passed a vote of confidence in Buhari and the Nwoye-led exco, posited that engaging opportunists, or those who do not sincerely believe in the APC philosophy and Mr. President’s next level agenda, would be counter-productive, especially at the state level.

According to Nwoye, such non-core member ministers would always use their position to engineer crisis for their selfish interest in their states. He insisted that for APC to change its perceived negative narrative in some states, the president should assemble a formidable cabinet members made up of men and women who truly believe in the party’s supremacy.

He said: “We call on Mr. President, not to make the mistake of appointing non-core members of our party as ministers but he should rather engage those who have contributed immensely to the progress of the APC, and sincerely believe in its ideology to help him drive the next level agenda.”

The party also appealed to the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the National working committee (NWC), to lift the suspension of one of its chieftains and Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, who was suspended some for alleged anti-party activities.

He said: “We appeal to our National Chairman and the NWC to reconsider their position on the suspension of one of our members, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, who is a core committed APC member, and ardent supporter of Mr. President.

He has contributed immensely to the growth and progress of the party in Enugu State and Nigeria.

“Mr. Okechukwu has always been at the fore front of promoting the APC led federal government’s programme and policies, including the next level agenda. He remains one of the party’s strong pillars in Enugu State.

“The party also thank President Buhari for appointing Mrs. Maria Aniobi, from Aninri Local Government Area, as a member of the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission (RMFC) board. We assure him that she will not let him and the party down.”

  • ‘NDDC committed to delivering quality projects’

Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Prof. Nelson Brambaifa has said the commission is committed to delivering quality projects in the Niger Delta. He promised that standards will not be compromised.

A statement on Sunday by NDDC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said Brambaifa gave the assurance at the inauguration of a new road in the Government Reservation Area (GRA) Layout Extension in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

According to him, the commission would continue to execute projects that would positively impact the people’s lives.

Brambaifa was accompanied by the Bayelsa State Coordinator Francis Kolokoro; Director of Bayelsa Office Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, and others.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari deserved praise for the increasing number of completed projects in the region. He urged stakeholders’ to hail President Buhari for supporting the accelerated execution of development projects, by ensuring that funds were made available for NDDC to carry out its mandate.

The NDDC chief, who admonished the people to support the Federal Government, also praised them for their peaceful conducts when projects were being executed in their areas.

He urged them to sue for peace, stressing that development would be impossible chaos.

Brambaifa said: “Peace is very important in order to assist the government in spreading development in the Niger Delta.”

The NDDC chief noted that the road would serve the residents well as it would enhance their businesses and social activities.

He said: “This is a sign of better things to come. More projects will be launched in the days and weeks ahead.”

The NDDC team earlier visited Governor Seriake Dickson, who called for greater collaboration in the design and execution of projects by the commission, and urged NDDC to focus more on big-ticket projects.

  • UNIPORT VC, ex-ASUU chair in war of words

Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Prof. Ndowa Lale, and former Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIPORT chapter, Prof. Andrew Efemini, an activist, are entangled in a brawl.

Efemini accused Lale, who took office on July 13, 2015, of financial impropriety, highhandedness, intimidation and incompetence. He called for his immediate removal.

The ex- ASUU chair said he decided to petition the University’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Prof. Mvendaga Jibo, to end Lale’s “abuse of office and poor performance”.

He said: “Prof. Lale criminally misled the Senate by not providing an approved schedule of fee in federal universities to the distinguished members. The fee schedule directed that the recommended fees for all students should be a maximum of N45,000 only.

“The directive is that students coming into the university should be charged fees not exceeding N45,000, all inclusive. The circular warned against the collection of acceptance fee, but Prof. Lale collected N30,000 as acceptance fee from each student. Under the draconian VC’s watch, first-year students are charged N128,000, excluding non-statutory charges at the various faculties and departments.

“In 2017, Prof. Lale, in pursuit of his ambition to see stooges and surrogates go to council, caused the withdrawal of elected internal members of council, who were yet to serve their statutory four-year tenure. In spite of protests, Lale ruled that two years in council for Senate representation is legal. Let him provide the law. Prof. Lale, after two years, conducted another election to council at the Senate on February 28. The tenure of four years, as stipulated in the university law, was violated.

“Prof. Lale must be urgently removed from office and investigated to save the university from further highhandedness and damage. He cannot be in office as VC, while Senate necessarily reviews all cases of injustice to students, arising from his criminal concealment since 2015.”

Efemini also alleged that the VC and his illegal internal council members unleashed terror on him and some members of staff, especially lecturers who were opposed to his ruthless abuse of office.

But Lale, in a statement, described Efemini as a certified fraudster and an eccentric anarchist.

The statement reads: “The allegations against me are mere concoctions from the warped mind of Prof. Efemini and his gang of professional trouble makers. In his now characteristic bravado and clownish shadow-boxing exercise, Prof. Efemini levelled allegations against me, without providing irrefutable evidence to back up his bogus and reckless claims.

“No federal university is allowed to collect school fees from students. Discerning observers will expect a self-advertised champion of students’ causes to know the differences between statutory charges and school fees. Such selective short-sightedness is typical of Prof. Efemini, in his haste to reach conclusions, before verifying the facts of any matter.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC) directed universities that might wish to exceed the N45,000 ceiling to consult students and other stakeholders, which Prof. Efemini did, while he served as Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs in 2013. The subsisting ‘acceptance fee’ was paid by students during the tenure of Prof. Efemini as Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs. I was not the VC at the time the ‘acceptance fee’ became official policy. I must be a superhuman to mislead Senate, comprising very distinguished academics.

“I was not the VC when Senate reached an agreement for its members to serve two-year tenure on the Governing Council. Nobody was ever prevented from contesting a second tenure, as recent election into the council has proven.

“Prof. Efemini is a certified fraudster, who has done incalculable damage to the hard-earned image of UNIPORT. His sadistic urge for cyclical chaos is not in synch with the activities of a conventional university. Prof. Efemini has not hidden his intention to disrupt normal academic activities in the university, since the subsisting peace does not conduce to his operational structure.”

Lale added that the current attacks on him were not the first by Efemini on a VC, stressing that he levelled similar allegations against his predecessor, Prof. Joseph Ajienka.

He added: “Prof. Efemini was pardoned by the management on account of a previous infraction that almost earned him sack. He prostrated from office to office and recruited all manner of persons to intercede on his behalf. No sooner was he pardoned than he launched his latest shadow-boxing exercise, to the embarrassment of all men and women of goodwill, who pleaded for the waiver of his suspension.

“Prof. Efemini has long ceased to teach his courses and he does not have contact hours with students, as required by extant rules. It is now time for him to be released from the services of the university, to give him enough time to pursue his destructive programme of unremitting anarchy outside the sane precincts of the campus.

“Such an eccentric anarchist has no place in an academic community that prides itself on polished behaviour, refined discourse and deference to the rights of others. Prof. Efemini should no longer be allowed to pollute the campus with his wild imagination and shadow-boxing pranks.”

  • Dickson employs 335 professionals

Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has offered automatic employment to 336 professionals.

Of the 336 beneficiaries, 102 PhD holders drawn from the state and other Ijaw-speaking communities were employed as lecturers in the state-owned tertiary institutions.

A statement by Dickson’s media aide, Fidelis Soriwei, said Dickson presented employment letters to the beneficiaries at the weekend.

Other beneficiaries included 60 medical doctors, 54 masters’ degree holders and 119 first class graduates.

Dickson said his administration was working hard to lay a solid foundation for a flourishing knowledge-based economy for the state.

He said: “It takes a number of years for this kind of investment to mature. We are building schools and capacities, and in about 20 years or so, we want to see top qualified Bayelsa professors in every field.

“We will create a fund to take care of publications for all those who have PhD to enable them produce more PhD holders. In the last seven years, we have been building educational infrastructure, awarding scholarships and employing. There is no doubt that we have done our duty, but the job of consolidating the gains lies with you. We expect the 102 PhD holders to become professors in the next couple of years.”

Secretary to the State Government and Chairman of the Special Employment Committee Kemela Okara was convinced that the beneficiaries would add value and increase productivity in the state workforce.

Commissioner for Education Jonathan Obuebite hailed Dickson for keeping to his promise to turn around education. According to him, the feat achieved in the education sector under Dickson was exemplary and inspiring.

Dickson has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for reappointing Boss Mustapha as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

A statement by Soriwei, described the reappointment as “well deserved”.

The statement reads: “I congratulate Mr. Boss Mustapha on his reappointment as Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This appointment is not surprising as the SGF carried out the vast responsibilities of his office efficiently with respect and dignity deserving of such a high office.

“I also praise the President for this appointment, which is a recognition of the exemplary efforts of the SGF. I wish Boss Mustapha success in this particular position and in his future dealings.”

  • Kyari, Baru inspect oil drilling operation in Bauchi, Gombe

The outgoing Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, alongside his successor, Mr. Mele Kyari, at the weekend visited the oil drilling operation site in Kolmani River II well in Bauchi and Gombe states.

Baru said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to growing Nigeria’s hydrocarbon reserves through the exploration of the various inland basins across the country.

A statement by the corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, quoted Baru as saying: “Expanding frontier basins exploration is one of the most important projects for Mr. President. He is fully convinced that the inland basins exploration holds the key to the next step of growing Nigeria’s crude oil reserves.”

The GMD noted that for an economy, which is heavily dependent on hydrocarbon production, there is need to continuously look for additional reserves to avoid depletion.

“Naturally, oil reserves deplete over time, and if you don’t replenish them, you will one day wake up to realise that you have nothing left to explore from the ground,” Baru said.

He said the visit was part of the smooth transition at the corporation to fully brief Kyari on the progress of work at the drilling site.

“I cannot hand over the NNPC without bringing the new GMD here for him to appreciate the kind of activities going on at the area. I am well-briefed but he needs to be on top of developments here too. And from his comments and observations, I am convinced he has already keyed into the project, as envisioned by Mr. President,” Baru said.

The outgoing GMD said the visit with his successor brought a good omen to the Kolmani exploration site as the team of explorers recovered a “fish” stuck in a well at the depth of 13,400 feet after about three days of tedious and continuous “fishing”.

In drilling parlance, “fishing” is the process of retrieving an item stuck in a well in the course of drilling, while a “fish” is simply the recovered item.

Baru also lauded the professionalism of the exploration team in maintaining zero Loss Time Injury (LTI) during the operations.

He noted that with the level of commitment and dedication he had seen in the exploration team, he could not wait for Mr. President to light the first flame at the area, signifying the potential discovery of hydrocarbons.
