Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, attributed the cause to “wrongful overtaking by the motorcycle rider.”

Akinbiyi said: “We learnt the truck and motor cycle were coming from idiroko to Sango-Ota.  Attempt by the motorcycle rider (who was carrying two passengers on the motorcycle) to overtake the truck from the left through a narrow space, the truck crushed them and all of them died on the spot.

  • Autopsy: Cause of Nigerian insurance director’s death in South Africa unnatural

Indications have emerged that the Nigerian insurance director and mother, Mrs. Uju Ndubuisi Chukwu, who died during a Pan African conference in South Africa was killed in her hotel room at Emperor Palace Hotel, Johannesburg.

This is coming following the autopsy report released by the Director-General of the Department of Health, Republic of South Africa, which stated that Mrs. Chukwu, a Deputy Director General of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) died of “Unnatural Cause Consistent with Strangulation”. This lays to rest the initial belief that she died in her sleep overnight.

Unnatural death is a category used by coroners or medical examiners and vital statistics specialists for classifying all human deaths not properly describable as death by natural causes. Hence, it would include events such as accident, drug overdose, attack by an animal, mob killing, execution, homicide, medical error, misadventure, State-sponsored mass murder, suicide and war.

Meanwhile, the report from South African authorities has thrown the insurance industry in the country and across the continent into confusion as the abridged death certificate provided by the South African authorities was silent on the type of unnatural cause that killed Mrs. Chukwu.

Most alarming to the insurance fraternity is the fact that the South African authorities have also said that CCTV footage provided by the hotel management to the police showed no one entered the deceased’s room despite the autopsy report that her death was unnatural.

In a private chat with The Nation, the Executive Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the Consular General in South Africa, Mr. Godwin Adama, is working with police authorities to unravel the cause of death.

She disclosed that an officer from the mission has been detailed to handle the case, along with South Africa Police, and the deceased’s brother is also with the team in South Africa.

She said Adama has assured that everything will be done to get to the root of the mysterious death.

She said: “We condole with the family of the deceased and assure that everything practically possible will be done to unravel what led to the tragic incident.

“We are trying to reach out to the family members so that we can pay a condolence visit to them”.

The CIIN President, Mr. Eddie Efekoha, also in an interview with the newspaper said he cannot say it is true or not that Mrs. Chukwu was killed because he has not seen any document to support it, other than the report by the South African authorities that simply states unnatural cause.

He said Mrs. Chukwu was full of life at the conference and they need the authorities to explain to them what killed the woman.

He said the institute has written to the African Insurance Organisation (AIO), the Institute of Insurance of South Africa (IISA) and the Nigeria Consular, South Africa that we have an abridged report which states unnatural death but we need more answers. IISA has written back to us to say they are unable to make any headway.

“The family also has a major role to play because they are to get information from the authorities. We wanted to leave her corpse in South Africa to enable us get to the root of the matter but the family said they want to bury her. As an institute, we are interested in unraveling the cause of her death and we will pursue to a logical conclusion”, he added.

  • El-Rufai’s wife expresses concern over youth involvement in violence

The wife of Kaduna State Governor, Aisha el-Rufai, has expressed concern on the increasing rate of youth violence in the country, especially in northern part.

She stated this during the Northern Youth Summit organised by Northern Hibiscus Initiative, with the theme ‘Awakening the Arewa Spirit’, held in Kaduna on Saturday.

“I am indeed delighted to be associated with such a laudable initiative which could not have come at a better time than this.

“Especially this period that our beloved country is grappling with the problems of kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, cultism, terrorism and drug abuse.

“In addition, the increasing rate of gender based violence particularly in Northern Nigeria gives me great cause for anxiety.

“The root cause of most of these could be traced to high level of poverty, low literacy, lack of awareness and an unprecedented high rate of youth unemployment in the region.

“The Northern youth summit therefore provides a golden opportunity to make a difference by creating awareness on these issues and ways of addressing them,” the governor’s wife said.

As part of the solutions, Mrs El-Rufai said there should be “innovative approaches such as promoting entrepreneurship and skills development in diverse fields of endeavour among the teeming youths population.

“I understand that the summit will, among other things, include interactive panel discussions on topical issues, ranging from how to set up successful business enterprises, skills acquisition, mentorship and relationship management.

“It is my utmost belief that the outcome emerging from this roundtable discussion would be beneficial to all in attendance.”

She added that it was imperative to ensure that adequate sustainability plan to keep the momentum of the summit, be developed as a key output from the event.

Mrs El-Rufai also hoped that the outcome of the summit would eventually lead to the establishment of skills acquisition centres, relationship counseling platforms, appropriate collaboration and partnerships with both the public and private sectors.

“As you proceed with the various activities of the summit, do keep in mind that the future of this country is in your hands. You should therefore make the best out of this rare opportunity including take-way useful lessons learnt that would be beneficial to you and the larger youth society in the North and Nigeria as a whole,” she stressed.

The governor’s wife called on youths to imbibe the culture of cooperation and collaboration as they embark on the journey of self development and self actualisation.

The Founder, Northern Hibiscus Initiative, Hajiya Aisha Falke, said northern Nigeria need to be conscious of the negative impact of so much poverty in the region.

“We cannot just sit down and say our government will do this or our government will give us jobs. People are graduating but no jobs, we have to do skill acquisition. We have to use our hands to make money,” she stressed.

According to her, in northern Nigeria, we do not have first generation millionaire and billionaires, we have second and third, meaning your fathers and grandfathers are the wealthy.

“Meanwhile, people who are actually not opportune to be from rich families are still left in the bottom, which actually is not what we want.

“That is why we are standing and ready to change the status quo,” she said.

  • Setting the agenda for Abba Kyari’s second coming

On Friday July 5, 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari made his first major appointments for his second term. The President gave the nod to Boss Mustapha and Abba Kyari to continue as Secretary to the Federal Government and Chief of Staff respectively. These are said to be positions meant for the President’s most trusted advisers. The operators of the so-called Kitchen Cabinet; where the beneficiaries of the Power and governance decisions in Aso Rock are determined.

Mustapha, a latter day Buhari appointee is not as popular as Kyari who is always in the news. In fact, Kyari’s media mentions may just trump President Buhari’s. That’s how popular Kyari is. Perhaps never have we had so much interest in an appointee of the President. This makes it imperative for the interest and fixation on Abba Kyari to be constructive and geared towards engendering good governance in Nigeria.

Prior to Kyari’s re-appointment, the media was awash with several campaigns in his favour as well as those designed to snuff out his influence in President Buhari’s administration. The media frenzy was immense. Several names were touted as possible replacements. Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), Adamu Adamu and Babatunde Raji Fashola were said to be the main contenders to the exalted office of Chief of Staff.

Ali, the unbending Buharist and current Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, was touted as one that would bring “discipline” while Adamu and Fashola, immediate past ministers of education and minister of works, housing and power respectively, were also considered as “progressives”.

Several reports quoted “Presidency sources” who “authoritatively” confirmed that President Buhari was set to drop Abba Kyari’s following outcome of investigation into various allegations. Unconfirmed reports were syndicated to instigate public outcry and angst against Kyari. The media war was so apparent to discerning Nigerians, to whom it was crystal clear that the drama was all about political posturing and positioning.

Yes, we have seen this play out in the polity time and again. Well, the President has elected to keep the services of Abba Kyari. This, regardless of the position of the warring factions, should be viewed as an endorsement of his performance. Consequently, all parties should in the interest of the nation unite and join hands with the President and his advisers to ensure Buhari’s second term is successful.

While congratulating Abba Kyari on his re-appointment, the Cambridge University trained lawyer must put all the drama behind him. Nigerians are expecting progress at the speed of light. His office is critical to setting the tone for the nation to make strategic and effective strides towards peace, progress and prosperity.

Abba Kyari needs to shield President Buhari from sycophants and those who are only seeking to feather their nests at the expense of Nigeria’s commonwealth. Kyari needs to coordinate far-reaching stakeholder engagement plans that will give Buhari’s administration access to multiple portals for discharging good governance equitably across the nation.

This second coming presents Abba Kyari a golden opportunity to help Buhari develop a legacy beyond fighting corruption and insecurity. Although these are essential for development, they do not guarantee sustainable growth. Abba Kyari neees to help Buhari build strong institutions.

In addition, Kyari should do all within his power to avoid  mainstream politics and focus on policy formulation. As a son of the Borno Kingdom, Kyari must uphold the pride and integrity of the reverred Kingdom. It also will not hurt for Kyari to shed the garb of being introverted;  he needs to be more convivial to engender opportunities of learning from others.

The onus is on Abba Kyari to ensure a coherent Presidency; one that is forthright, visionary and unwavering. Hopefully, the distractions and agitations that preceded Abba Kyari’s second coming will inspire him to work even harder and serve selflessly in accordance to the expectations of Nigerians.

    Biodun Fatoyinbo’s rape scandal

The sexual allegation leveled against the senior pastor of COZA, Biodun Fatoyinbo, by Busola Dakolo, wife of Nigeria’s popular musician Timi Dakolo has continued to generate heated controversies this week.

Busola Dakolo accused the cleric of raping her when she was still very young.

Busola, a mother of 3, in an interview with Y!Naija, explained how Pastor Biodun allegedly tried to have sex with her in his matrimonial home when she came to assist his wife at the time she delivered her first child.

Timi Dakolo had accused Fatoyinbo of taking advantage of women in COZA, and leaving them emotionally broken afterwards.

Another woman, a former staff of Biodun Fatoyinbo, also came out to detail how he raped her when she worked with the church as a legal guardian to Fatoyinbo’s children in a foreign country.

The woman who spoke anonymously in an exclusive interview with Chude Jideonwo, co-founder of Red Media said the pastor raped her in 2017.

The flamboyant pastor trailed by murmurs of sexual impropriety and abuses of power in his conduct with his members for years, most famously in the 2013 scandal where a female member of his church revealed an affair with him.

Fatoyinbo however announced on Monday that he would embark on a leave of absence in light of the rape allegations made against him by Busola. stepping down from his position running one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing Pentecostal churches, the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, since the allegations against him emerged last week.

Protesters stood outside different branches of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, holding placards which read: “Thou shall not rape.”

The combined outrage across social media created by strong, impassioned responses caused the actions to take place.

    Senator Elisha Abbo’s assault

In another news revealed this week, Senator Elisha Abbo, lawmaker representing Adamawa-North senatorial district, was caught on camera physically assaulting a woman at an adult toy shop in Abuja.

Abbo, who is believed to be the Nigeria’s youngest senator, was caught hitting the woman after she begged him not to assault the shop-owner whom the lawmaker accused of insulting him.

It was gathered that the assault occurred on May 11, a month before he was sworn in on June 11.

The assault was reported on May 14 at the Maitama Area Command Headquarters on Nile Street, but the police told the victim to go look for the Senator’s telephone number or they would not be able to do anything about it, Premium Times reports.

According to witnesses and sources, Abbo had entered the shop at about 6:00 p.m. on May 11, a Saturday accompanied by three young women to purchase adult toys.

However, shortly after they began shopping for the toys, one of the three girls brought in by Mr Abbo started throwing up.

She vomited multiple times, prompting the shop-owner to remark that the woman should have vomited outside and not inside her shop, especially since she was not a child.

The senator, who was said to be agitated by the sudden illness of one of his girls, was said to have accused the shop-owner of poisoning the store’s air conditioner.

The shopowner’s argument that if the air conditioner had been contaminated others in the shop would have also taken ill further angered Mr Abbo.

It was gathered that the assaulted woman, who is nursing a child, was taken to a hospital, where she was treated for eye inflammation and other injuries she sustained during the attack.

Senator Abba was reported to have threatened to deal with the shop owner if the footage of his violence ever surfaced.

The victim and her lawyer were said to have demanded an apology from Mr Abbo. They also want him to settle the medical bill and desist from further threats of physical harm against the woman.

However, he has apologized saying he had learned from the incident and pleaded for forgiveness from the Senate, his family and citizens who might have been offended by his actions.

“It is therefore with deep sense of remorse and responsibility that, I, Sen. Elisha Abbo, profoundly apologize to all Nigerians, the Senate, the People’s Democratic Party, my friends as well as our mothers, the Nigerian women,” he said in the video.

    RUGA settlement suspension

As reactions continue to trail the suspension of RUGA settlement, President Muhammadu Buhari has succumbed to pressure on Wednesday by suspending the controversial Ruga settlement scheme, designed to settle the Fulani and their cattle on acquired land across states in the federation.

The suspension was announced in Abuja after governors representing the six geopolitical zones of the country met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Chairman of the National Committee on Food Security/Herders/Farmers Conflicts and Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Dave Umahi, disclosed the government’s decision to journalists after the meeting.

Besides Umahi, others at the meeting included Plateau State Governor, Mr Simon Lalong; Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu; and the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, Mr Martins Nasir.

Umahi explained that the controversial Ruga policy was not consistent with the National Livestock Transformation Plan, which was earlier deliberated upon and approved by the National Economic Council. Osinbajo is the Chairman of the NEC.

Controversy had trailed the project since it was announced in June. While some governors welcomed it, others had said it could lead to more attacks on communities.

Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, had also opposed the policy, saying it could spark off an explosion.

    Social media shutdown

On Wednesday, there was a worldwide social media shutdown which raised fears in the mind of the users.

Online monitoring service DownDetector reported that the outage began at around 1200 GMT on Wednesday and affected Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

According to DownDetector, thousands of users around the world were reporting outages, with Europe and North America most impacted. Individual users and businesses were affected.

#Facebookdown and #Instagramdown trended on Twitter as users around the world reported these apps were not functioning.

Supreme court upholds election of Osun governor

The supreme court has upheld the victory of Gboyega Oyetola, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Osun governorship election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oyetola winner of the election after a rerun in September 2018.

Dissatisfied with INEC’s declaration, Ademola Adeleke, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, filed a petition at the tribunal and he was declared winner of the election but Oyetola appealed the verdict of the tribunal.

In May, the appeal court gave judgement in favour of the APC candidate. The court had set aside the entire proceedings of the tribunal, saying the panel was not well constituted.

Delivering the majority judgement on Friday, Bode Rhodes-Vivour, a judge, held that the appeal court was right to set aside the entire proceedings of the tribunal.

Rhodes-Vivour said the failure of J. Obiora, a member of tribunal, to attend proceedings on February 6 rendered the judgement a “nullity.”

The judge also said the certified true copy (CTC) was not signed by Obiora.

“It affected the proceedings. The appeal is dismissed,” he said.

Giving the minority judgement, Kumai Akaas, a member of the apex court’s panel, said a judge does not have to sign a certified true copy (CTC) of a judgement before it is valid.

“There is a precedence. The judge does not need to sign CTC of the judgement,” he said.

Five of the seven judges on the apex court panel agreed with the judgement which favoured Oyetola while two disagreed.

  • Military, civilians reach power-sharing deal in Sudan

Sudan’s ruling military council and a coalition of opposition and protest groups reached an agreement to share power during a transition period leading to elections, setting off street celebrations by thousands of people.

The two sides, which have held talks in Khartoum for the past two days, agreed to “establish a sovereign council by rotation between the military and civilians for a period of three years or slightly more,” AU mediator Mohamed Hassan Lebatt said at a news conference.

They also agreed to form an independent technocratic government and to launch a transparent, independent investigation into violent events in recent weeks.

The two sides agreed to postpone the establishment of a legislative council. They had previously agreed that the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) coalition would take two-thirds of a legislative council’s seats before security forces crushed a sit-in protest on June 3, killing dozens, and talks collapsed

The streets of Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city across the Nile River, erupted in celebration when the news broke, a Reuters witness said.

Thousands of people of all ages took to the streets, chanting “Civilian! Civilian! Civilian!”

Young men banged drums, people honked their car horns and women carrying Sudanese flags ululated in jubilation.

“This agreement opens the way for the formation of the institutions of the transitional authority, and we hope that this is the beginning of a new era,” said Omar al-Degair, a leader of the FFC.

“We thank the African and Ethiopian mediators for their efforts and patience.

“We also thank our brothers in the Forces for Freedom and Change for the good spirit,” said Dagalo, who heads the Rapid Support Forces accused by the FFC of crushing the sit-in.

Opposition medics say more than 100 people were killed in the dispersal and subsequent violence. The government put the death toll at 62.
