  • 44 years after, UNIJOS moves to permanent site

University of Jos (UNIJOS) staff have been ordered to complete relocation to the institution’s permanent site after operating from temporary site for 44 years.

Its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sebastine Maimako, gave the order while taking over the newly constructed administrative/Senate Building from the contractor on Monday.

At a brief but colourful handing over ceremony held at the project site, Prof. Maimako said: “I hereby directed all administrative staff of the university to move to the permanent site immediately.”

The movement to the permanent site has been gradual and in phases since 2010 ,with the relocation of some of the faculties to the permanent site. The administrative and Senate sections, however, remained at the temporary site due to non-completion of the building for 10 years.

The Senate Building is to accommodate management staff, lecturers and the administrative staff.

The building has a 400 capacity Senate chambers with modern facilities, including emergency exit units.

The facility also has two committee rooms of 30 people seat each and one boardroom with a capacity of 30 people. It also has a 1000 KVA generator to provide independent energy to the building.

Prof. Maimako, who was visibly excited, expresses appreciation to the staff, who contributed to the success of the project.

He pleaded with the staff to use the facilities carefully.

The 13th Chairman of the Governing Council and a former Minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh, represented by a member of the governing council, Dr. Philomena Mukbang, congratulated the vice chancellor and management staff for completing the building.

  • PDP berates Obaseki’s ‘silence’ on Ruga settlement

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of secretly conceding land to the Federal Government for a pilot scheme of the Ruga Settlement.

It said Obaseki’s silence, when states are rejecting the initiative, was worrisome.

Chairman Chief Dan Orbih, who addressed a news conference yesterday, urged Governor Obaseki to understand that land is finite and could not be used in exchange for political bargains and favour. The chairman insisted that Obaseki must listen to the people and the cries of victims of herdsmen activities.

The chairman said the PDP was concerned about political events in the state, especially the lack of cohesion in the House of Assembly dominated by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “The APC can no longer blame the PDP for its misrule. The only achievement of Governor Obaseki is a huge debt profile for Edo State. Obaseki is celebrating birthday at a time Edo people have nothing to celebrate.

“There is nothing to give the impression of hope. The new central hospital is now for high blood pressure test, radio diagnostics and dialysis. What is happening to the 200-bed hospital? There is urgent need to end the blame game and let the people have full benefits of the facilities in the hospital.

“The government should let us know why they are bringing in a management consulting firm to run the hospital. The central hospital is our state equivalent of Federal Government University Teaching Hospitals, and they are not managed by consulting firms. Why is Edo State bringing in a consulting firm to manage the central hospital?

“We sympathise with Edo people over the unpleasant political happenings in the state. It is indeed sad to observe that after 11 years of APC government, what they bequeath to Edo people is bickering, vendetta, corruption, hate and Ruga Settlement!”

But Obaseki said his agricultural plan has nothing to do with the initiative. According to him, his plan for agricultural development involves the value chain in both crop production and animal husbandry. His plans were developed long before Ruga Settlement was muted, he added.

The governor, who spoke through his media aide, Crusoe Osagie, said the safety, security and prosperity of Edo people were priority and non-negotiable. He assured the people he would not cede their rights and land to anybody, as his programmes as a sovereign state does not run on the back of any external entity.

He said: “Edo people should disregard any contrary information circulated by the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any other group or individual.

“As for the Benin Central Hospital, it is up and running, and providing tertiary healthcare services which it was set up to provide.

“Its phased opening is in line with the vision of the government, and in the coming weeks and months, other phases will be unveiled to complement the primary and secondary health centres.

“Governor Obaseki will continue to put the people’s interest first in all his policies and programmes, as he has demonstrated in the past two years and seven months.”

“You will not hear anything from me under the table. But what you will hear is what is for Nasarawa State? What is for Nasarawa State is what interests me more than what is for A. A Sule,” the governor stated.

He added that his administration will provide all the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the activities of investors, stressing that the state will collaborate with security agencies to ensure there is peace and security for businesses to thrive.

  • Ahmadu Ali’s son joins Kogi governorship race

Son of former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Dr. Ahmadu Ali has joined the growing list of governorship aspirants in Kogi State for the November election.

Mohammed Nasarudeen Ali, who announced his intention to contest the PDP ticket in Abuja yesterday, said the state has lagged behind for too long and needs a vibrant young man to take it out of the wood.

Ali, who refused to access the performance of the state’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration said he was not out to condemn any candidate, arguing that he believe he has a better programme.

He added that he was the only one presently in the race that has set up an industry in the state and employing several young men and providing means of livelihood for families.

Mohammed said he plans to replicate that gesture in all parts of the state once elected governor.

The aspirant said it was time for the people to leave behind ethnic politics and vote for competence and people, who can ensure true development.

Asked how his father’s political structures would impact in his ambition, the younger Ali said the contest was not about his father, but about the state, refusing to admit that his father’s image would play a role.

He is, however, convinced that his mother, Dr. Maryam Ahmadu Ali’s membership of the ruling party in Kogi State, the APC, will not affect his chances of becoming the next governor.

The police had denied that no such incident happened, explaining that after preliminary investigations, it was revealed that what transpired was “only the movement of cattle and herders from Cross River State, through Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and a neighbouring town for grazing”.

The police added that “such transit had nothing to do with escorting herders and their cattle out of Agbada Nenwe community”.

The monarch added that they enjoy cordial relationship with the Fulani community, noting that “no cow has ever been killed in this kingdom; no Fulani man has ever been hurt”.

He said: “We have continued to maintain peace as directed by Governor Ugwuanyi, who has always urged all the traditional rulers to maintain security and unity of the country, to make sure that we live peacefully with one another”.

Chairman of Aninri Ezekiel Chukwu said immediately he got wind of the rumour he “rushed to the community with the security agencies in the council and could not establish the occurrence of such incident”.

The council chairman assured the people to continue to go about their normal business without fear or panic. “We are assuring you that we will continue to maintain peace and security of lives and property,” he said.

The Sarkin Hausawa, Alhaji Abukakar Yusuf Sambo, said: “We have been enjoying peaceful co-existence in Enugu State, and we are here to say that mischief makers will not succeed.”

Chairman of MACBAN Alhaji Gidado Siddiki cautioned the people against “the harm our individual or group’s unruly act can cause the wider society beyond our immediate environment”.

“It is my sincere plea that while we genuinely seek our individual or group interests, we encourage collective good of all and healthy cohesion for virile nationhood.

“I thank the government of Enugu State, and indeed the governments of the Southeast states, for their nurturing cordiality among residents of their states and other persons whose businesses are of economic value”.

Ugwuanyi appealed to peddlers of false news to note that Enugu is a peaceful state.

The governor maintained that “Enugu State, as we declared during our first ever Oganiru Investment Summit, is open for business and a home for all”. He reassured both the indigenes and non-indigenes of the community that the state is secure and remains one of the most peaceful state in the country.

“As a government, we assure and reassure both the indigenes and non-indigenes of this community that Enugu State is secure and remains one of the most peaceful states in the country,” he governor added.

  • Youths seek 55 per cent inclusion in Ayade’s govt

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Cross River State has called on Governor Ben Ayade to allocate 55 per cent of appointments into his executive to qualified youths.

The chairman, Ndiyo Ndiyo, who addressed a news conference, Monday, on activities earmarked to celebrate the 2019 International Youth day on August 12, urged that the 55 per cent should consist of youths between 18 and 35 years, while the remaining should range from 35 to 50.

Ndiyo noted that during the last administration, the youths asked for 35 per cent and the governor appointed more than the requested percentage. According to him, the gesture had given the youths a sense of belonging in governance.

He said: “In Ayade’s first administration, we asked for 35 per cent youth inclusion into governance, he challenged us and gave us more than that. In his second term, we are asking for 55 per cent of appointments for youths between the ages of 18 and 35 and the other percentage to be between 35 and 50.

“This is also to give us a ground of learning from governance. As it stands, Cross River has promising young persons in politics from the experience of the last four years.

“We hope that by 2023, we should have a young person in the range of 40 years becoming the governor. The 55 per cent will make us stronger financially and vested with political knowledge.”

Ndiyo advised youths to shun vices by contributing their quota to the development of the society.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the International Youth Day Celebration Great Ogban said over 5,000 youths are expected to participate in the week-long event from August 5 to 12.

  • Your security approach not working, Bugaje tells Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to review the country’s security architecture, if the war against terrorism, armed banditry and kidnapping must be won.

The call came yesterday as a two-day Northern Nigeria Security Conference kicked off in Kaduna.

Convener of Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP), the organisers of the conference, Dr. Usman Bugaje, said the Buhari administration’s approach to the security challenges has failed.

Similarly, a member of National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu, said regardless of efforts of the security agencies, Nigeria would keep wallowing in crises, if the population growth rate continues to be higher than the country’s economic growth rate.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Bugaje said: “What is happening in Nigeria today in terms of security is known to everybody. A lot of killings and atrocities are under-reported. We have a situation where things were deteriorating and still deteriorating and every move by the security agency is not translating to positive results.

“It becomes necessary, therefore, to re-examine the situation and explore the community approach. We want to see what community can do so that we can come together and salvage this country.

“We have brought experts, even though many of them have retired from security forces, so they can bring their expertise and see how the communities can complement the efforts of the security agencies.

“Now, we are not here to blame any particular person. And in this two-day security conference, we did underscore a few points of action. There is the need to take this issue of security very seriously with all responsibility. There should be no room for politics or joke here.

“Secondly, I did say that a citizen will have a responsibility to participate and to show when the government is not delivering, even if it is under dictatorship or in the circumstance that we are.”

Read Also: We’ve depleted bandits activities in Northwest, says GOC

He added: “So, we want people who are holding government’s positions from the lowest up to the President to understand that what they have been doing on security is not working. This is because, it is the citizens who can tell you whether what you are doing is working or not.

“The third point we are considering is the fact that citizens seem to have lost their courage to tell the truth. But this is important in our kind of setting because we are not sure if the President is getting the truth. We want to make sure those that are making policies and strategies are listening to the truth. It is important that whatever we see to be truth we say it.”

Aremu, in his own view, said: “Regardless of the efforts of the security agencies, Nigeria will continue to have crises, if the country’s population growth rate continues to be higher than economic growth rate.

“Regardless of whether we armed the security agencies to combat the security challenges, if the number of unemployed youths continues to increase more than that of the security operatives, there is bound to be problem.”

One of the keynote speakers, Abubakar Sadiq Muhammed, said the present blanket approach employed by security forces to tackle insecurity cannot give the results the country needs.

“If you go to Zamfara, economy is in serious crisis. People are no longer going to farm and towns have been abandoned. There is large movement of people from the area they were engaging in farming activities to area where they don’t do anything to become internally displaced persons.

“Sometimes, we demonstrate our lack of capability to deal with the situation we found ourselves. If care is not taken, these criminals will overrun the security – God forbid, and that was why I said we have to look at our security architecture in this country seriously,” Muhammed stated.
