Kante joins Fenerbahce after deal revival

Fenerbahce have confirmed the signing of France midfielder N’Golo Kante from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

The Frenchman’s hopes of joining the Turkish club appeared to be over on Tuesday, when Fenerbahce released a statement blaming Al-Ittihad for the collapse of the the move.

Fenerbahce claimed Al-Ittihad failed to file the necessary paperwork to complete the transfer, which involves Morocco striker Youssef En-Nesyri moving in the opposite direction.

However, Fenerbahce confirmed on Wednesday that the issue had been resolved and that former Chelsea player Kante had joined the club after two and a half years in Saudi Arabia.

  • New pan-African podcast explores how women are driving reforms in law

New pan-African podcast explores how women are driving reforms in law

A six-part series hosted by Adelle Onyango on the Legally Clueless platform has sought to explore how women in law are driving reform, shifting institutions, and building intergenerational solidarity across Africa.

Partnering with Legally Clueless, “Difference She Makes” will launch a bold new six-part podcast series that centres on a critical truth: when women lead in law, societies change.

The weekly series brings together leading women legal voices from Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria to explore how justice evolves in real life and what it takes to make reform credible, inclusive, and lasting.

The series also moves beyond legal theory to examine law as a lived system shaped not only by constitutions and policies, but also by culture, relationships, workplace realities, and intergenerational leadership.

Across six episodes, the podcast would highlight the practical levers that shape institutional change, from strategic litigation and professional ethics to movement building, legal leadership, and the everyday ways women are expanding access to justice.

    Guests on the series include Anne Ireri, outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA Kenya); Zikhona Ndlebe, lawyer and researcher (South Africa);

Ruth Tanui, Founder and Managing Partner, Ruth Tanui and Co. Advocates; and Natasha Ali Errey, Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Chairperson, Mombasa Law Society and LSK Coast Branch, who is also Vice Chair, Chairs’ Caucus (LSK); Chairperson, Ethics and Practice Time Committee, East Africa Law Society.

Others are Odunoluwa (Odun) Longe, Partner and Co-Founder, TLP Advisory, and Sibongile Ndashe, Founder and Executive Director, Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa (ISLA).

The series would be hosted by Adelle Onyango, an acclaimed Kenyan media personality, social activist, and entrepreneur recognized by global gender equality platforms, including UN Women.

Onyango’s leadership reflects a core premise of the series: storytelling shapes who is seen as credible, whose work is valued, and how societies imagine justice, leadership, and power.

“This series is much more than women succeeding in law,” said Adelle Onyango.

“It is about what happens when women are trusted with power; when their voices shape institutions, culture, and the future of our societies.”

Olivia Maina of “Difference She Makes” said: “It reflects a core truth across Africa: reform only becomes real when women are part of shaping, interpreting, and sustaining it.

“By bringing together women across generations and legal traditions, the podcast shows how progress is built cumulatively.

“At ‘Difference She Makes,” we see this as an essential step toward justice systems that are credible, inclusive, and future-ready.”

Episodes would be aired every Friday for six weeks on Legally Clueless platforms, supported by a coordinated multi-country amplification campaign across Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.

  • FG’s free metres yet to arrive Edo, says Commissioner

FG’s free metres yet to arrive Edo, says Commissioner

Edo State Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbor, has said that the meters released by the Federal Government for free distribution to electricity consumers have yet to reach Edo State.

Usenbor said the state government would not allow any irregularities in the distribution of the metres.

Speaking in a telephone chat, Usenbor said investors who have shown interest in investing in the power sector appeared not to be serious-minded.

He said some of the investors were hawking for letters from the state government with which they would seek loans from the bank.

The Edo Commissioner for Power said Governor Monday Okpebholo tasked his Ministry to follow due standard and technicality to ensure those who have the requisite capacity got the license to generate and distribute power in the state.

Usenbor noted that the electricity business was no joking matter.

He said an investor who showed interest in hydro power was currently at the Ojirami dam to do a feasibility study on how to generate power from the dam due to an industrial cluster within that region.

Usenbor said some investors have shown interest in generating power from gas.

We enacted the Electricity law in February 2025, and I have taken deliberate steps to develop an Edo State Power market.

A lot of investors have approached the state, but they are not very serious-minded. Power business is not a joking matter. It is very expensive. Some of them are hawking for letters from the Edo State government to go and use to solicit funds. We want those who have the capacity after we have done due diligence, before we can engage them.”

Usenbor dismissed allegations that power investors were scared of coming to Edo State due to the current challenges being faced by Ossiomo Power.

He said challenges at Ossiom Power were an internal tussle within the structure of their business.

“We are not chasing investors away. Okpebholo did not stop anybody from doing business in the power sector. Ossiomo had issues with their technical partners, the Chinese, and these issues are tied to finances. Okpebholo has mandated that we dive into these issues and give them the needed support to ensure the problem is resolved amicably.”

Speaking on the free metering policy of the federal government, Usenbor said the free metres were yet to arrive in Edo State.

“As we speak, the free metres have not arrived, Edo. We will not accept irregularities in the distribution of free metres.”

  • Delta women storm Asaba in prayer against cultism, drug abuse

Delta women storm Asaba in prayer against cultism, drug abuse

Women from across Delta State converged on Asaba, the state capital, to pray against cultism, drug abuse, immorality, and other social vices at the 19th Mothers Arise Prayer Conference, a faith-based initiative.

The prayer gathering, hosted by the wife of the Governor of Delta State, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, held yesterday, at the Government House Chapel, Asaba, had as its theme, “Not So,” taken from Luke 1:60.

The conference focused on the role of mothers in spiritual intercession, family stability, and societal transformation.

Addressing participants, Deaconess Oborevwori called on women across the state to rise from what she described as spiritual slumber and take responsibility for the protection of their homes, children, and the state through sustained prayer.

She described the event as a divinely appointed covenant day, noting that February 2 of every year had been set aside as a special day of prayer for women in Delta State.

According to her, the theme “Not So” was a reminder for mothers to take firm stands against negative trends, drawing inspiration from the biblical account of Elizabeth during the naming of John the Baptist.

“This year’s theme, Not So, is a wake-up call for us as mothers to stand our ground. If Elizabeth had kept quiet, destiny would have been truncated,” she said.

The First Lady urged women to reject every form of evil confronting the state, including cultism, drug abuse, immorality, and insecurity, stressing that mothers play a crucial role in shaping the moral direction of society.

“As mothers, we must give no place to the devil. Our mouths are not for negative confessions but for decrees. Take your place, put a stop to that evil, and God will honour your words,” she stated.

She further encouraged women to intercede fervently for their husbands, children, the less privileged, and the vulnerable, noting that prayer remained a strong defence for families and communities.

Deaconess Oborevwori also appealed to women to continue praying for the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, expressing optimism that the MORE Agenda would continue to drive development across Delta State.

“Delta State is the finger of God, and Delta State is a praying state. With prayers, more projects will spring up across the state,” she said.

She also urged women to remain active participants in governance and to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, describing the PVC as a powerful tool for civic engagement.

Earlier, the guest speaker and Founder of Christ Like Ministry Centre, Rev. Fanny Ekpekurede, described the conference as a clarion call for mothers to return to the altar of prayer.

“If there is a woman to pray, there is a God to answer,” she said, urging mothers to reject spiritual laziness, nonchalance, and negative utterances over their children.

She advised women to surround themselves with prayerful companions, observe fasting and spiritual discipline, and protect their homes through constant intercession.

The conference was attended by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Lady Catherine Onyeme; wives of former governors, including Deaconess Dame Edith Okowa and Deaconess Roli Uduaghan; female political office holders, wives of government functionaries, leaders of Christian bodies, and various women’s groups from across the state.

Activities at the event included praise and worship sessions, intercessory prayers for families, youths, the Governor, and the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary arms of government, as well as a guest ministration by gospel artiste Efe Tobore.

  • APC Delta North coalition calls for inclusion of pioneer members in governance

APC Delta North coalition calls for inclusion of pioneer members in governance

    …backs re-election of Tinubu, Oborevwori in 2027

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Coalition for Equity (DNCE) have called on the national leadership of the party and the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to ensure the inclusion of long-standing party members in governance.

They made the call during a recent coalition meeting held in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, where stakeholders expressed concern over what they described as the continued exclusion of pioneer and loyal APC members from key decision-making processes and political appointments.

Speaking at the gathering, the Convener of the APC DNCE, Chief Alex Ikpeazu, emphasised that sustainable party growth and effective governance could only be achieved when those who laboured for the party’s survival are recognised and fully carried along.

He urged Governor Oborevwori and the national leadership of the APC to promote equity, fairness, and inclusiveness, noting that many founding members have remained steadfast despite political challenges and frustrations.

“We have been in the party for years without defecting and have not benefited from the party we diligently formed. We do not want those who joined later to override us. We do not want to continue to be in bondage,” Ikpeazu said.

He called on the national leadership of the party to establish a clear framework that prioritizes old APC members for leadership positions at the ward, local government, and state levels, stressing that such an approach would foster unity and understanding.

“The coming congress should be devoid of conflict. Governor Oborevwori should also consider old APC members in appointments across the state. It is the turn of Delta North to produce the state party chairman, as Delta South and Central have already done. Once it is zoned here, we will harmonize and present our best candidate. This will help mend fences ahead of 2027,” he added.

The Secretary of the coalition, Hon. Kemmer Enina, warned that marginalising founding members could weaken party unity, noting that exclusion breeds discontent and undermines loyalty.

Similarly, Ambassador Kenneth Rafua, a coalition leader, stated that inclusion is not a privilege but a right, adding that experienced party members possess the vital institutional memory needed to strengthen governance.

Another leader, Ben LionHeart Williams, appealed to party leaders to avoid actions that could alienate committed members, describing unity as the backbone of political success.

The coalition’s Publicity Secretary, Chief Barr. Williams Agholor said the group’s position was not driven by bitterness but by genuine concern for the future of the APC and effective governance in Delta State.

Also speaking, High Chief Gabriel Ohai, the Odogwu of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and a pioneer APC member, recalled the sacrifices made by early members of the party and called for deliberate efforts to reintegrate them into governance structures.

Other members, including Comrade Victor Sorokwu, Ajifo Nwabunma, and Mr. Osafule John, echoed the call for recognition, fairness, and active participation of founding members in government affairs.

The coalition reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and pledged continued support for the government, while urging party leaders to address their concerns in the interest of unity and progress.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to working toward the re-election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

  • African traditional leaders commit to stronger action against GBV

African traditional leaders commit to stronger action against GBV

Traditional and cultural leaders from across Africa have pledged to intensify efforts to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) on the continent.

The pledge, according to a statement by the United Nations, was made at a high-level continental conference in Lagos.

The Conference of African Traditional and Cultural Leaders on GBV Prevention, convened by the Ford Foundation and UN Women in partnership with the Government of Nigeria, brought together influential monarchs, policymakers, development partners, and civil society actors to advance community-driven solutions to gender-based violence.

The two-day meeting, which was held from February 2 to 3, 2026, reflects growing recognition that sustainable approaches to GBV prevention must be anchored in cultural systems and traditional institutions that shape social norms across African communities.

Dignitaries at the conference include the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; His Imperial Majesty the Ooni of Ife; the Emir of Fika; the Emir of Shonga; Chief Siansali of Zimbabwe, President of the Ford Foundation, Heather Gerken; UN Women Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Dr. Maxime Houinato; Ford Foundation West Africa Director, Dr. Chichi Aniagolu; and UN Women Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong.

Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Governor, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, described gender-based violence as a major social crisis requiring urgent and deliberate action. He stressed that silence enables abuse and called for laws and community structures that protect, rather than harm, women and girls.

Ford Foundation President Heather Gerken emphasised the importance of engaging cultural authority to drive social change, noting that collaboration with traditional and faith leaders is essential to dismantling harmful practices and promoting the dignity and rights of women and girls.

From a global policy standpoint, UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda warned that many practices accepted as tradition are, in reality, forms of abuse. She argued that gender-based violence is a symptom of deeper structural inequalities that must be addressed through stronger norms and institutions that guarantee justice and equality.

UN Women’s Regional Director, Dr. Maxime Houinato, highlighted the central role of culture in African societies, stating that traditional leaders are key architects of social order whose alignment with justice and equality can significantly improve community safety.

Participants at the conference reaffirmed that traditional and cultural leaders, due to their moral influence and closeness to grassroots communities, play a critical role in challenging harmful norms and strengthening prevention and response mechanisms to GBV. The gathering builds on ongoing engagement with traditional institutions, including the Council of Traditional Leaders of Africa, to formalise cultural leadership within national and regional GBV strategies.

Dr. Chichi Aniagolu of the Ford Foundation noted that culture is dynamic and shaped by those entrusted to preserve it, adding that efforts to end harmful practices ultimately reinforce, rather than weaken, traditional authority.

The Emir of Shonga, HRH Alhaji Dr. Haliru Yahaya Ndanusa, cautioned against the misuse of religion to justify violence, stressing that any action causing harm contradicts religious principles.

Also speaking, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, urged traditional rulers to leverage their influence to protect lives and transform communities by championing dignity, equality, and justice.

The conference is expected to conclude with the adoption of a Regional Declaration and Communiqué outlining shared commitments to end gender-based violence, as well as a Sustainability Roadmap aimed at integrating traditional leadership into long-term national and regional prevention strategies.

Organisers said the outcomes would strengthen partnerships among traditional institutions, governments, African Union bodies, and civil society, improve survivor-centred support systems at the community level, and enhance coordinated resource mobilisation to combat GBV across Africa.
