‘Divine Haemoglobin’: Harriet Afolabi unveils faith-driven blueprint for thriving with sickle cell

The atmosphere at Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Lagos, was charged with hope, reflection, and renewed purpose on Saturday, December 13, as Harriet Afolabi unveiled her much-anticipated book, Divine Haemoglobin.

More than a book launch, the event was a clarion call to sickle cell warriors, caregivers, and advocates to rethink health, faith, and daily living in the fight against sickle cell disorder (SCD).

Divine Haemoglobin is thoughtfully crafted to help sickle cell warriors improve their health, thrive, and live optimally.

Speaking at the launch, Afolabi explained that the book was born out of lived experience, deep reflection, and an unshakeable belief that individuals must learn to listen to their bodies and make informed, life-giving choices.

“Our mission is clear,” she said. “We want to reach 25,000 sickle cell warriors with this book, support 25 sickle cell warriors in need, and carry out strategic awareness campaigns on the dilemmas and prevention of sickle cell disorder.”

Central to the message of the book is the need for personal responsibility in health management—what one eats, drinks, and consumes as medication.

Afolabi urged sickle cell warriors to be attentive to how their bodies respond to treatments, foods, and supplements.

“Not everything works for everyone,” she said. “You need to listen to your body and take what is good for you.”

Using a compelling analogy, the author likened human life to a product created by a manufacturer.

Just as products come with manuals to ensure optimal use, she said God, the Creator, also provided humanity with a manual for life—the Bible.

“If you follow the manual, you get the best out of the product,” she noted. “If you don’t, you may still use it, but not to its full potential. God created us for His glory and expects us to live by His Word, not outside it.”

Drawing from her personal journey, Afolabi recounted how early exposure to the word of God shaped her life.

She shared light-hearted memories from her secondary school days, explaining how prayer and faith became real to her at a young age.

“These things may sound small, but they taught me that God answers prayers,” she said. “We must teach our children the Word of God early. We must chant it, memorise it and live by it, so it becomes part of us.”

She stressed that discernment is crucial, especially in health decisions.

Narrating her experience with a drug she once took in a bid to gain weight, Afolabi said the side effects were severe and forced her to reconsider her approach.

“I had to stop. I realised that if the Spirit of God cannot help me add weight, then I’m fine. Now, I ask God before taking anything. Should I go for it or not?” she said, adding that she has since found better results with natural remedies and herbs.

She also revealed her adverse reactions to certain supplements commonly prescribed for sickle cell patients.

“I kept asking myself, why am I feeling pain when I take this? Supplements are supposed to help, not harm,” she said, citing research and literature that advocate caution in the use of certain synthetic drugs and encourage more natural alternatives where possible.

The chairman of the occasion, Pastor Tunji Ayegbusi, praised Divine Haemoglobin, noting its potential to transform lives.

He encouraged SCWs and their families to embrace the book’s guidance and use it as a practical tool for health improvement and spiritual growth.

“This book is more than information; it is empowerment. It teaches, guides, and inspires, and I urge everyone to take its lessons seriously,” he said.

The event was expertly anchored by Bolaji Agnes Fajaso, Publisher of Elite Magazine, who reinforced the book’s message with her own testimony.

“Using the right vitamins, minerals, and herbs, many of us are doing great,” she said. “We’re not in the hospital all the time. We’re not in constant pain. We’re living normal lives, and our children are too.”

A chapter review was delivered by Ruth Nwachukwu, an accountant, who broke down the science behind haemoglobin and its critical role in the body.

She explained how sickle cell disorder affects the ability of haemoglobin to carry sufficient oxygen, leading to many of the complications experienced by patients.

The welcome address was delivered by the author’s twin brother, Harry Omobogie, who expressed pride in Afolabi’s resilience and dedication to improving the lives of sickle cell warriors.

The event also attracted several notable guests, including Mrs Amos Oluwatoyin and Ms Helen Akpabio, classmates of the author from the University of Ibadan and representatives of A-classites 2009.

Others in attendance included Mr Stanley Ibadan, Mrs Idowu Edokpaiye, and a host of friends, supporters, and advocates.

In Divine Haemoglobin, Harriet Afolabi blends faith, lived experience, and practical wisdom into a powerful guide for sickle cell warriors.

The book stands as both a source of encouragement and a persuasive reminder that thriving with sickle cell is possible—with knowledge, discernment, faith, and intentional living.

10 common WhatsApp scams, and how to avoid them

WhatsApp has become a convenient way to stay connected, but it has also turned into a hunting ground for scammers. From fake job offers to romance schemes, fraudsters are constantly finding new ways to deceive users.

Here are ten of the most common WhatsApp scams and practical tips to help you stay safe:

    1. Impersonation scams

In impersonation scams, criminals pretend to be someone you know, a friend, colleague, or family member. They may claim they’ve changed their phone number or that they’re in urgent trouble and need money immediately. To appear believable, scammers often steal profile photos from social media.

How to avoid it: Always verify requests for money by calling the person directly on a trusted number.

    2. Romance scams

Romance scams often begin on dating apps or social media platforms before moving to WhatsApp, where scammers feel less restricted. After building emotional trust, they invent emergencies such as medical bills or travel costs and ask for financial help.

How to avoid it: Be cautious of online relationships that escalate quickly or involve repeated financial requests.

    3. Lottery or prize draw scams

These scams involve messages claiming you’ve won a prize from a well-known brand or organisation. To claim your “winnings,” you’re asked to pay a processing fee or share personal details. The sense of urgency is designed to stop you from thinking critically.

How to avoid it: Remember that legitimate lotteries don’t contact winners randomly or ask for upfront payments.

    4. Job scams

Fake recruiters may contact you with attractive job offers you never applied for, then ask to continue the conversation on WhatsApp. They may request payment for training or equipment, or collect sensitive personal details for “onboarding.”

How to avoid it: Research the company independently and never pay to secure a job.

    5. WhatsApp verification code scams

Here, scammers try to access your WhatsApp account by requesting a login code sent to your phone. They may pose as a friend who claims the code was sent to you by mistake. Sharing the code gives them control of your account.

How to avoid it: Never share your WhatsApp verification code with anyone — under any circumstances.

    6. Gift card scams

Gift card scams promise free vouchers or discounts in exchange for completing surveys or clicking links. These links may install malware or harvest personal information.

How to avoid it: Ignore unsolicited offers and avoid clicking unknown links.

    7. Charity scams

Fraudsters exploit compassion by posing as charities, especially during disasters or emergencies. They use emotional language and urgent appeals to pressure people into donating quickly.

How to avoid it: Donate only through verified charity websites and trusted organisations.

    8. Tech support scams

In these scams, someone claims to be from WhatsApp support and warns of a security problem with your account. They may ask for login details or encourage you to install software that gives them control of your device.

How to avoid it: WhatsApp does not contact users directly for support via messages.

    9. Crypto scams

Crypto scams promote fake investment opportunities promising high returns with little risk. Once money is sent, it’s usually impossible to recover.

How to avoid it: Be skeptical of guaranteed profits and unsolicited investment advice.

    10. Investment scams

Beyond cryptocurrency, scammers promote fake stocks or exclusive investment opportunities. They often add victims to WhatsApp groups filled with fake success stories to create credibility.

How to avoid it: Take time to research and never invest under pressure.

  • 2027: BAT Vanguard endorses Tinubu, vows to deliver 10m votes

2027: BAT Vanguard endorses Tinubu, vows to deliver 10m votes

The second term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday got a boost, as a support group, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) Vanguard endorsed him and pledged to deliver 10 million votes to secure the President’s second term in the 2027 general election

Members of the group unanimously endorsed the president at the group’s end-of-year party and special recognition awards ceremony in Abuja with the theme: “Standing Firm for Renewed Hope: The BAT Vanguard Mandate.”

The Convener of the group and chairman of the board of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Hon. Sola Olofin said the president’s endorsement was informed by the need to avail the country another opportunity for a “performing, capacity, vision and proven leadership”, which he said are the hallmarks of Tinubu’s administration since 2023.

He disclosed that the BAT Vanguard is launching a major national social investment initiative inspired by the Renewed Hope vision which will begin in 2026 with a targeted social assistance programmes to support about 50,000 vulnerable households nationwide with food items, school materials and basic welfare support.

Applauding the President, Olofin noted that Tinubu should be commended for taking bold decisions that were postponed for decades but necessary to reset the economy and secure Nigeria’s future.

“From critical fiscal reforms and subsidy rationalization, to restoring investor confidence, stabilizing monetary policy, accelerating infrastructure development, and redesigning social investment programmes, the direction is clear that Nigeria is being rebuilt deliberately, systematically, and with vision.

“We believe the reforms must be consolidated. And we believe President Tinubu remains the best leader to complete this transformation. As we look ahead to 2026, BAT Vanguard is repositioning itself not just as a campaign structure but as a governance-support institution.

“We are set to embark on a structured monitoring and evaluation engagement across key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to support compliance with the Renewed Hope Agenda. This is not to antagonize any appointee but to strengthen delivery, accountability, and citizen confidence.

“As we move toward 2027, our objective is clear and measurable: to mobilize and deliver no fewer than 10 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are expanding, re-energizing, and strengthening our structures to make this vision a reality,” he said.

Another chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr O’Diakpo Obire said since May 2023, the President has embarked boldest reforms in modern Nigerian history, ranging from economic restructuring to fiscal discipline; infrastructure renewal to social investment and energy reform to enhanced regional leadership.

“Under President Tinubu; Nigeria’s finances have been placed on a more sustainable path; infrastructure renewal, roads, rails, ports, is accelerating across states; the Students’ Loan Fund has opened new doors for young people; oreign exchange reforms are stabilizing long-term investor confidence.

“Power sector interventions are opening space for renewed generation and distribution and targeted social programs are being recalibrated to support vulnerable households. These are not easy reforms. They are the kind of decisive actions necessary to build a stronger economy, a more competitive nation, and a fairer society,” he said.

Obire noted for these reforms to succeed, public understanding and grassroots support are essential which is a role BAT Vanguard and its loyal members have played and must continue in taking government achievements to the grassroots, countering misinformation and ensuring citizens understand the long-term benefits of these policies.

“As we approach the 2027 elections, the task before BAT Vanguard becomes even more critical. The story of President Tinubu’s reforms must be told with clarity. The progress achieved must be translated into political value. The trust of the Nigerian people must be deepened through engagement, transparency, and consistent mobilisation.

“BAT Vanguard must strengthen its structures and target all 774 Local Government Areas, expand youth and women engagement platforms, establish policy advocacy desks to explain government programme, mobilise Nigerians based on facts, achievements, and shared national vision, and galvanize support that ensures President Tinubu’s re-election for continuity, stability, and consolidation,” he added.

Coastal highway: Winhomes urges subscribers to avoid parallel legal actions

Winhomes Estate Global Services Ltd has advised its subscribers and members of the public to refrain from instituting independent or parallel legal actions concerning the Winhomes Estate land at Okun-Ajah, Lagos, noting that the matter is already before the courts.

In a public notice, the company stated that it has instituted a suit, which is currently on appeal, in its name and on behalf of all purchasers of land within the estate.

It said the legal action relates to issues arising from developments connected with the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road project and engagements with the Federal Ministry of Works.

The company explained that the suit covers both affected and unaffected subscribers of Winhomes Estate.

It reiterated that it remains the duly constituted developer and representative body handling the matter collectively in court and in discussions with the federal government and the Ministry of Works on settlement, compensation, and restitution.

The company clarified that it has not authorised any subscriber, group, or individual to file separate lawsuits or commence independent legal proceedings on the same subject.

According to Winhomes, subscribers who choose to pursue independent actions while the appeal is pending do so at their own discretion.

The company also recalled its previous involvement in addressing earlier disputes affecting the estate, stating that it had acted in the collective interest of subscribers in those instances.

On the future of the estate, Winhomes assured subscribers that their investments would be preserved once the legal process and engagements with the federal government are concluded.

It maintained that, pending the final determination of the appeal and resolution with the Federal Government, it remains the only recognised entity prosecuting the matter on behalf of subscribers.

The notice added that upon settlement and compensation by the Federal Government, the estate would be redesigned, restructured, and reallocated in a way that preserves subscriber equity and value.

  • Ibadan Mogajis, CCII, monarchs, others warn Alaafin against disrespecting Ladoja

Ibadan Mogajis, CCII, monarchs, others warn Alaafin against disrespecting Ladoja

The Mogajis in Ibadanland, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Monarchs, Baales, the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative (ICPI), and other prominent sons and daughters of the ancient city have cautioned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, against taking Ibadan for granted.

The stakeholders stressed that the people of Ibadan would not accept any action capable of diminishing the status of the Olubadan stool or the Ibadan traditional system.

The position followed concerns that arose over a sitting arrangement involving the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and a representative of the Alaafin of Oyo at a recent security meeting held in Ibadan.

In a statement signed by the President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, and the Coordinator of the Ibadan Compound Peace Initiative, Mogaji Dr Nurudeen Akinade, the stakeholders maintained that Ibadanland should not be regarded as subordinate to Oyo or any other town in Yorubaland.

The statement noted that Ibadan has consistently upheld its dignity and standing within Yoruba tradition and would continue to do so.

The group called on leaders across Yorubaland to engage the Alaafin of Oyo on the matter, adding that the peaceful disposition of the people of Ibadan should not be misinterpreted.

They also stated that the issue surrounding the chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs had been settled and should not be reopened.

The stakeholders further highlighted the background of Olubadan as a former senator, governor, and accomplished businessman, stressing that the stool should continue to be accorded due respect.

“Ibadan will never be a slave to anyone. Ibadanland has always maintained its dignity in Yoruba tradition, and this will not change.”

The statement highlighted Olubadan’s distinguished background as a former Senator, Governor, and successful businessman, emphasizing that he will not be subjected to any form of ridicule.

“Ibadan mesi, won o go” (Ibadan has spoken, we won’t go back), the statement concluded, indicating the resolve of the people of Ibadan to defend their dignity and tradition.

“Ibadanland deserves respect, and any attempt to undermine its traditional institutions will be met with resistance. The people of Ibadan are united in their determination to protect their heritage.”
