  • Stakeholders call for end to stigma against persons with psychosocial disabilities

Stakeholders call for end to stigma against persons with psychosocial disabilities

Stakeholders in the mental health sector have renewed calls for increased awareness, strengthened support systems and the elimination of stigma faced by persons living with psychosocial disabilities.

They made the call at a research engagement meeting held in Ibadan, where mental health experts, caregivers, community groups, policy makers, traditional leaders and government representatives among others gathered to deepen public understanding of psychosocial disorders and promote more inclusive approaches to care.

The event, a close out session for a research and intervention effort also provided an atmosphere of gratitude as beneficiaries of the Support Comprehensive Care and Empowerment for Persons Living with Psychosocial Disability in Sub-Saharan Africa (SUCCEED Africa intervention) to reflect on the impact of the project in supporting people with psychosocial disabilities.

Peer researcher with the SUCCEED Project, Bisola Oladele, said the project, implemented in four African countries, supported up to 65 participants in Oyo state through livelihood tools, empowerment and community-based rehabilitation.

She noted that many beneficiaries who once depended on others or begged for survival are now working and able to fend for themselves.

Oladele explained that psychosocial disabilities encompass conditions that affect mental health, influencing how individuals think, feel and interact with others, noting that although millions silently struggle with these challenges, living with a psychosocial disability does not equate to a life without hope.

She said the initiative is being implemented across four African countries: Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, with oversight from its headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

She explained that the Nigeria chapter of the SUCCEED Project focuses on developing a community-based rehabilitation model, designed to empower individuals living with psychosocial disabilities to regain stability, independence and dignity.

According to her, the model strengthens family and community support structures, improves access to care and promotes reintegration rather than isolation.

As the intervention winds down in Nigeria, Oladele emphasized the importance of sustaining public engagement and awareness to ensure that the impact of the project continues beyond its official lifespan.

Also speaking, Project supervisor, Dr Tolulope Orotoye, explained that the initiative is driven by a collaboration between SUCCEED Africa, which leads the research, and ASIDO Foundation, the implementing partner responsible for community recruitment and support delivery.

She said although the project is winding down, continuity is assured through trained PHC workers, community stakeholders and peer leaders who will maintain home visits, peer meetings and basic care.

Dr. Orotoye who described psychosocial disability as a widespread but poorly understood health challenge affecting millions across Nigeria, disclosed that one in four Nigerians experiences a mental health concern in their lifetime, making it critical to prioritize awareness, access to care and early intervention.

She maintained that the organisation and it’s partners remain committed to promoting mental health, strengthening community engagement and advocating for better support for affected persons.

Lauding the initiative and its sustainability plan, the Mental health Coordinator, Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Mrs Abodunrin Kehinde said the SUCCEED Africa project implementation will still be making impact even after the end of the project, noting that policy makers at the PHCB will continue to provide drugs, at affordable rate without any stock-out.

She also assures that the skilled staffs that have been trained in taking care of the patients will have regular training to update their skills and knowledge so as to be able to continually provide service for the patients unhindered.

A beneficiary, Mrs Modinat Oyedele, thanked both SUCCEED Africa and ASIDO Foundation for the support, saying the empowerment tools and business funding provided have helped participants gain stability and community acceptance.

Highpoint of the event was the panel discussions which focused on practical strategies for improving community awareness, reducing stigma, enhancing access to care and promoting inclusion for persons living with psychosocial disabilities.

Participants were encouraged to serve as mental health ambassadors within their communities by offering empathy, sharing accurate information and discouraging discrimination.

The session concluded that addressing psychosocial disorders requires a holistic and individualized approach, combining psychological care, medical treatment, community support, social inclusion and economic empowerment.

They also emphasized that each patient’s experience is unique and must be approached with compassion, professionalism and tailored interventions.

The meeting ended with a collective commitment to continue advocacy efforts and ensure that people with psychosocial disabilities receive the dignity, support and opportunities they deserve.

  • Why I supported Tinubu in 2023 – Bimbo Akintola

Why I supported Tinubu in 2023 – Bimbo Akintola

Actress Bimbo Akintola has opened up about her unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing bullying as the driving force behind her endorsement.

In a recent interview on With Chude, Akintola revealed that her support for Tinubu was fueled by an opposition’s supporter who bullied her over her choice of candidate.

The actress urged Nigerians to respect differing political opinions, emphasising that everyone has the right to his/her own views.

The actress also condemned the treatment of veteran actress Joke Silva, who faced harsh criticism for her support of Tinubu.

She wrote, “I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because somebody annoyed me with their bullying.

“Nigerians are annoying. Don’t bully other people. We have our rights to differences of opinion. You don’t like this man [Tinubu], cool, you have the right not to like him. You prefer this person, good for you. But don’t bully others.

“They bullied aunty Joke to the point that someone wrote something that was so inhumane. So, I made a video and said, ‘I’m also supporting Tinubu, kill me, let me see if you can change my mind.’

“We need to stop bullying. We need to agree that we can never agree with everybody. That’s what makes us great and beautiful. If we are all the same, it would be a boring life. Till tomorrow, you might not agree that he was the best person for the job, but at that point, that was who I wanted, that was who I voted for. You can’t take my voice away from me; it’s mine,” she expressed.

Oyetola hails Supreme Court verdict on Osun LG allocation suit

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun state, Adegboyega Oyetola, has commended the Supreme Court for striking out the suit filed by the Osun state government seeking to compel the Federal Government to release allocations to the sacked PDP-led local government chairmen.

In a 6–1 majority ruling, the apex court held that the suit, filed by the Osun State Attorney General, was incompetent, stating that the state lacked the legal capacity to invoke the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction on behalf of local government councils.

According to a statement issued by Oyetola’s Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, the Court affirmed that local governments, as autonomous constitutional entities, are the rightful parties to initiate such legal action— not the state government.

Reacting to the judgment, Dr. Oyetola praised the Supreme Court for what he described as “a clear and courageous affirmation of constitutionalism, due process, and the sanctity of democratic institutions.”

He said the ruling is a major victory for democracy and the rule of law, noting that the judgment reinforces the autonomy of local governments and sends a strong message that legal procedures cannot be distorted for partisan purposes.

Dr. Oyetola further stated that the Osun State Government’s attempt to compel the release of funds to officials removed by a valid court judgment amounted to an effort to sidestep legitimate legal outcomes.

He added that the Supreme Court’s decision has restored clarity and order.

He urged the Osun State Government to respect judicial decisions and place the overall interest of the state above partisan considerations, stressing that stable governance can only be achieved when the rule of law is upheld.

Speaking during the pre-commissioning and press briefing, Professor Oloyede expressed appreciation for the warm reception from the Kaduna Polytechnic management and commended the institution’s commitment to growth and development.

He noted that Kaduna Polytechnic earned multiple JAMB awards due to its compliance with the board’s criteria, including an open and inclusive admission system.

He emphasised that institutions are assessed on factors such as the number of candidates seeking admission, acceptance of applicants from all 36 states and the FCT, and commitment to national inclusiveness.

Professor Oloyede urged Nigerian tertiary institutions to adopt inclusive admission practices to reduce tribalism and promote national cohesion.

He also highlighted international admissions, gender balance, and adherence to admission regulations as key criteria for the JAMB awards.

He stressed that compliance with guidelines—especially those under the Central Admission Processing System—is crucial, adding that validation of award winners is carried out by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to ensure fairness.

Other considerations include the number of foreign candidates admitted, improvements in gender balance, and overall adherence to JAMB’s regulatory framework.

“Kaduna Polytechnic shouldn’t thank JAMB for what it gets from it because the institution earned the award based on merit stating that JAMB doesn’t award contracts but gives awards to the institutions that deserved it.

Explaining that the efforts of Kaduna Polytechnic are magnanimous in promoting education beyond Africa. He also commended the relationship of the management of the institution for their humane and generous reception.

Prof. Ishaq appreciated the kind words showered on him and the comments of the Chairman Governing Council on the Rector, and the management of the institution stating that the statements are yardstick for the good records of the staff of the institution.

“I must, therefore, place on record my unreserved applause for the Management of Kaduna Polytechnic, led by our indefatigable Rector, Dr. Suleiman Umar, for their consistency, credibility, and unwavering commitment to excellence. Time and again, this Administration has utilized JAMB intervention funds with utmost prudence and purpose; constructing and renovating lecture theatres, laboratories, classrooms, and offices across our various campuses; equipping departments with modern teaching and learning tools; and now, delivering this world-class medical laboratory building that will serve both our immediate Polytechnic community and the larger society,” the Chairman read.

Prof. Pinheiro said the Rector is consistent and prudent in his administration and said that the JAMB projects would serve the larger community and not only the staff and students of the institution.

He charged the Director of Shehu Kangiwa Medical Center and the staff responsible for maintaining the Medical Laboratory, and he appreciated the JAMB Board for the award and recognition.

“Finally, let me reassure all our development partners; JAMB, TETFund, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Kaduna State Government, and our numerous friends in the private sector, that Kaduna Polytechnic will continue to justify the confidence reposed in us. We will continue to be good stewards of every resource entrusted to us, and we will continue to deploy them in ways that directly improve teaching, learning, research, and community service,” the Chairman Governing Council stated.

In his address, Dr. Suleiman Umar, the Rector of Kaduna Polytechnic welcomed all the staff of the institution to the commissioning of the JAMB awards project.

“The Shehu Mohammed Kangiwa Medical Centre has come a long way since its modest beginning in 1969 as a simple sickbay attending only to minor ailments of staff and students. From 1978 onwards, it transformed into a full-fledged healthcare facility, extending quality medical services not only to the Kaduna Polytechnic community but also to the general public,” the Rector explained.

The Rector said it is a transparent project for the development of Kaduna Polytechnic which will enhance medical activities in healthcare.

“On behalf of the Kaduna Polytechnic Community, I express our deepest appreciation to the leadership and entire family of JAMB for this honour and for consistently choosing Kaduna Polytechnic as a worthy partner in nation-building. Your sustained support has transformed lives and institutions, and we are immensely proud of this partnership.”

  • Women to gain 156 additional parliamentary seats in reserved seats bill

Women to gain 156 additional parliamentary seats in reserved seats bill

Nigerian women stand to gain 156 additional seats across state and federal legislatures if the Reserved Seats for Women Bill currently before the National Assembly is passed and signed into law by the President.

The bill, which seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create special seats for women in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly, is being championed by gender advocates as a corrective, temporary, and strategic measure to address decades of underrepresentation of women in governance.

While the proposal recommends one reserved seat for women in both the House of Representatives and the Senate from each state, as well as three seats per state assembly, The Nation gathered that the Senate is pushing instead for one reserved women’s seat per geopolitical zone in the upper chamber.

Speaking during a training session for members of the House of Representatives Press Corps—organised by the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs in collaboration with the TOS Foundation—the Special Adviser to the Deputy Speaker on Legislative Matters, Chidozie Aja, dismissed claims that the bill is designed to help women displace men from existing elective positions.

He said, “For emphasis, these seats will not replace existing seats, but will expand representation to create room for women at the table of decision-making. It is important, also to note that political parties will field only female candidates for these seats.

“It is meant to last for 4 election cycle of 16 years in all. It is a temporary special measure. However, adjustments being proposed so far may either completely remove the sunset clause or extend the duration. Summarily, the Bill seeks to alter Sections 48, 49, 71, 77, 91 and 117 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999; and more recently recommended alteration of Section 42.

“While this is novel in the Nigerian space, this approach has been used successfully by Rwanda, now the global leader with 61% women in Parliament. Other countries that have successfully implemented this approach, in various forms and mixes, include Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Burkina Faso and Senegal.

“It is important to note that even if additional 74 seats are granted in the Senate and House of Representatives, bringing the total number of seats to 543, it means that Nigeria will only secure 13.6% women representation in the national parliament. Not an outstanding progress, but significant.

“The evidence is clear, countries that adopt structural gender quotas tend to experience stronger representation, better governance, and improved development outcomes”.

He explained that the the bill will strengthen democracy, “because democracy thrives when all voices are heard, adding that “currently, Nigerian democracy is functioning with only half of its potential. Women’s inclusion makes democracy deeper, more legitimate, and more stable.

“Multiple global studies show that when women participate, parliaments pass better health policies, more education-focused laws, stronger social protection frameworks and more community-driven development policies. Simply put, women’s presence improves the quality of governance.

“Women are critical actors in peacebuilding, especially at the grassroots. Their inclusion helps reduce conflict and improve community resilience. Gender inclusion is also an economic strategy.”

He said further that a study by the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that Nigeria’s GDP would increase if women were fully included in economic and political life.

The Institute projects US$22.9 billion overall economic gain and 23% overall growth in GDP if Nigeria reduces gender inequality by 2025.

  • Buratai denies terrorism financing allegations, says claim fabricated

Buratai denies terrorism financing allegations, says claim fabricated

Former Chief of Army Staff and Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt.-General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has said that the insinuation that he was connected, “directly or indirectly”, to terrorism financing is entirely fabricated

He said the insinuation was also inconsistent with facts, and fundamentally at odds with his values and lifelong commitment to defending the country against terrorism.

Buratai said this in a statement on Saturday, signed on his behalf by former Army’s spokesperson, Brig.-General Sani Kukasheka Usman, following an online publication linking some prominent individuals to terrorism financiers.

However, the statement described such allegations as “false, unfounded, mischievous, and amount to a smear campaign deliberately designed to tarnish his name and reputation.”

It said: “At no point in his distinguished career has he ever been questioned, investigated, indicted, or associated with any such matter by any official body or authority. No security institution, intelligence agency, judicial panel, diplomatic mission, oversight mechanism, or administrative body has ever linked him with terrorism financing in any form.

“The narrative being circulated by Sahara Reporters, relying solely on the unverified personal claims of Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi (rtd), is therefore a clear misrepresentation borne out of malice and lacks any factual or legal foundation.”

The statement stated that it was “regrettable, though unsurprising,” that the online publication had once again attempted to drag the precious name into disrepute, a pattern he said it has repeatedly pursued over the years, albeit unsuccessfully.

“Each attempt has failed because his record remains forthright, transparent, and distinguished by honourable service to the nation,” it said.

The statement said that for over four decades, General Buratai served the country with “honour, courage and steadfast commitment” to defeating terrorism, emphasizing under his leadership, the Nigerian Army significantly degraded Boko Haram and ISWAP, recovered previously occupied territories, restored civil administration, and returned displaced Nigerians to their homes.

“It defies logic and conscience to suggest that the same person who led decisive actions against terrorism would in any way be associated with the very elements he spent his career confronting,” it said.

The statement, therefore, called on Sahara Reporters and Major General Ali-Keffi (rtd) to immediately retract their publication and tender an unreserved public apology to General Buratai.

“Failure to do so will leave us with no option but to initiate appropriate legal proceedings to protect his reputation and seek redress for this malicious attack,” it said.

Naira ends week with N2.60 loss against dollar

The Naira closed the week slightly weaker on Friday, recording a loss of N2.60 against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market.

It settled at N1,450.42, according to figures released on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official website, reflecting a mild but persistent downward drift.

The latest closing rate represents a 0.17 per cent depreciation when compared with Thursday’s level of N1,447.82, which itself showed limited pressure on market stability.

On Wednesday, the Naira exchanged at N1,447.64, marking a 0.1 per cent decline as demand for the dollar continued to outweigh available supply.

The currency had earlier traded at N1,445.39 on Tuesday, representing a 0.2 per cent loss when set beside Monday’s rate of N1,448.43 per dollar.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the week’s movements highlight ongoing fragility in the official window, where modest fluctuations have become increasingly common in recent months.
