  • I’ve no connection with any terrorism financiers – Ex-Army chief Yahaya

I’ve no connection with any terrorism financiers – Ex-Army chief Yahaya

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-General Faruk Yahaya, has refuted claims by an online publication linking him to individuals allegedly involved in terrorism financing.

General Yahaya, through a statement by former Army’s spokesperson, Brig.-General Sani Kukasheka Usman, on Saturday, described the allegations in the publication as “false, malicious and baseless.”

On Friday, an online publication, SaharaReporters, allegedly named some individuals, including General Yahaya, claiming they were linked to terrorism financiers, citing retired Nigerian Army Major General Ali-Keffi, who once commanded the 1 Division and served as General Officer Commanding (GOC), as the source of the allegations.

However, the statement emphasized that at no point during General Yahaya’s distinguished military career, nor before or after his service as Chief of Army Staff, did he have any direct or indirect association with any person or entity involved in terrorism financing or activities that threaten Nigeria’s national security.

“Regrettably, Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi appears to be pursuing a personal vendetta, seeking to tarnish General Yahaya’s impeccable reputation based on disciplinary actions lawfully taken during his service. The publications are, therefore, malicious and without factual foundation.

“It is deeply irresponsible that Sahara Reporters published these unverified claims without conducting basic fact-checking.”

According to the statement, the allegations are inconsistent with General Yahaya’s “impeccable service record, professional integrity, modest lifestyle, and lifelong commitment” to the defence of Nigeria.

The statement stated that the former Army Chief “unequivocally” rejected and repudiated any attempt to associate him with terrorism or related activities, and demand that Major General Danjuma Ali-Keffi (rtd), Sahara Reporters, and all parties circulating the false claims to immediately “retract their statements, correct the misinformation, and cease further dissemination of defamatory content.”

“Failure to comply will leave us with no option but to pursue appropriate legal action to protect the name, honour, and reputation of Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya (rtd) in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.

It said Nigeria’s fight against terrorism requires responsibility, patriotism, and truth, not “malicious propaganda driven by personal grudges against those who have devoted their lives to protecting the nation.”

NAF pilots escaped death as fighter jet crash in Niger

Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet pilots narrowly escaped death on Saturday after safely ejecting from their aircraft following an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check flight at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State.

The pilots were said to have expertly manoeuvred the jet away from populated areas before ejecting, a decision that prevented civilian casualties.

NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, said the aircraft developed an emergency shortly after take-off, prompting the pilots to act swiftly and with remarkable composure.

“They expertly manoeuvred the aircraft away from populated areas before executing a safe ejection,” he said.

Ejodame revealed that the crew is currently undergoing routine medical evaluation at a NAF health facility.

He said the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, praised the pilots for their courage, discipline and sound judgement, which prevented loss of life.

“He has also directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident,” he said.

Ejodame reassures the public of NAF’s unwavering commitment to stringent safety standards and operational excellence.

“The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” he said.

Funke Akindele appeals to UK fans to protect ‘Behind The Scenes’ from piracy

Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has appealed to her fans in the United Kingdom to refrain from sharing clips of her new film, “Behind the Scenes”, online.

The movie, which premiered on December 4, at Odeon Cinemas in Greenwich, UK generated significant buzz.

Following the success, Akindele has expressed worry that unauthorised sharing of clips could jeopardise ticket sales ahead of the Nigerian release on December 12.

In a video message, Akindele urged fans to respect the filmmakers’ efforts and avoid piracy, saying, “UK fans that have watched Behind the scenes, please stop posting online, you’re not helping or promoting.

“Please don’t record, we spent over a billion on that project, don’t let me run into debt, please stop posting the recordings, it is piracy”.

Fans have rallied behind the actress, echoing her call to avoid piracy and wait for the official release.

I’m a singer, not a gospel artist – Sola Allyson

Popular singer Sola Allyson has clarified that she is a singer, not a gospel artist, as widely believed.

In an interview with Oyinmomo TV, Allyson explained that she had never referred to herself as a gospel artist and didn’t mention Jesus in her songs because He didn’t ask for publicity.

She said, “I don’t sing religious songs. As I am like this, I don’t call myself a gospel artist. My name is Sola Allyson. I am a singer.”

The ‘Eji Owuro’ crooner also opened up about her marital arrangement, revealing that she is married but doesn’t live with her husband rather they live with each other.

She said, “I am married but not living with my husband. He stays in my house and I also stay in his house. That’s the love that people older than us didn’t let us know is hard. They make it seem like once you love each other, you will live happily ever after”.

She emphasised a partnership approach to her marriage, stressing that she and her partner married each other, rather than her being owned by her husband.

“Saying I am in my husband’s house is different from saying I married my husband. My husband and I married each other; we are in one another’s life.

“Saying I am in my husband’s house gives men a sense of ownership. I am not doing competition with anyone”.

Allyson also spoke on feminism and highlighted the importance of equality, stating that women should have the same choices as men.

“Feminism is not saying men are not good people. What feminism is, before anger came into it because of how women were treated, was that the choice that men have to do whatever they wish should also be given to women,” she added.

  • EPL: Chelsea’s Delap injured in drab goalless draw at Bournemouth

EPL: Chelsea’s Delap injured in drab goalless draw at Bournemouth

Chelsea striker Liam Delap injured his shoulder during a drab 0-0 draw at Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Delap appeared to dislocate his shoulder after pulling down Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi while defending a corner.

The England Under-21 international was replaced by teenager Marc Guiu after a series of physical duels with Senesi, who also later went off injured after overstretching for the ball in the second half.

Both sides struggled in attack despite Chelsea recalling forward Cole Palmer, and the draw was a fair result. Palmer lasted 58 minutes in his first start since 20 September, having suffered a groin injury before fracturing his toe in an accident at home in November.

Bournemouth thought they had scored in the fifth minute when forward Antoine Semenyo reacted quickest to finish from close range after Evanilson’s blocked attempt. However, Evanilson was marginally offside in the build-up and the goal was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The hosts were the better side in the first half, with Semenyo showing why there is transfer interest from top clubs in January, by forcing a save with a long-range effort and almost setting up a tap-in for Evanilson.

Marcus Tavernier and Alex Jimenez then came close for Chelsea before Marc Cucurella headed just over from Pedro Neto’s cross in the 21st minute. Delap then had a shot blocked before going off injured.

Chelsea began to dominate after the break, with Alejandro Garnacho heading against the post. But most of their efforts came from outside the box, including shots from Neto, Palmer, Guiu and Enzo Fernandez.

Both teams made attacking changes, with Bournemouth introducing attacking midfielders David Brooks and Amine Adli alongside striker Enes Unal, while Chelsea brought on Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian.

Bournemouth held on comfortably but rarely threatened in the second half, apart from Semenyo’s dribble and shot that drew a good save from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Senesi’s withdrawal also disrupted their momentum.

Andoni Iraola’s side will be pleased despite being now six matches without a win, while Chelsea are winless in three, denting talk of a potential title challenge.

  • EPL: Man City win to move two points of Arsenal

EPL: Man City win to move two points of Arsenal

Manchester City blew the Premier League title race wide open by capitalising on leaders Arsenal’s defeat in comfortably dispatching Sunderland at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side had seen the Gunners suffer a last-gasp loss against Aston Villa at lunchtime on Saturday and ensured there was no slip-up of their own by swatting aside the visitors to move to within two points of the top.

City initially found it difficult to make inroads against the Sunderland’s low block and were frustrated by a solid five-man backline.

Having kept the hosts at bay, the visitors saw the game snatched away in the space of four first-half minutes, courtesy of goals from City’s two centre-halves.

The Black Cats defenders sat back on Ruben Dias and it proved fatal as the Portugal international strode forward and unleashed a thunderous 30-yard strike, which took a deflection off Dan Ballard and swerved into the top corner.

The hosts doubled their advantage on 35 minutes when Josko Gvardiol leapt highest to power home an unstoppable header from Phil Foden’s inswinging corner and give the hosts a comfortable half-time cushion.

City sought to add to the scoreline in the second half and Jeremy Doku’s low curling effort struck the post, while Foden’s first-time follow-up was brilliantly blocked.

Erling Haaland’s hooked shot was cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida, before Rayan Cherki provided a sublime assist for Foden to head in the third goal.

Chances were at a premium for Sunderland in the opening period, with Enzo le Fee shooting into side-netting, but they did have better opportunities in the second half.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a big save to deny Wilson Isidor after Dias’ mistake, while captain Granit Xhaka’s thumping low effort beat the Italy international but cannoned against the post.

Sunderland saw Luke O’Nien sent off in injury-time for a nasty, studs-high challenge on Matheus Nunes, with the yellow card upgraded to a red after referee Andy Madley reviewed the challenge on the pitchside monitor.

  • Osun 2026: Omisore, Alabi, others break silence, call APC screening ‘biggest joke of the year’

Osun 2026: Omisore, Alabi, others break silence, call APC screening ‘biggest joke of the year’

All seven governorship aspirants disqualified by the Osun State APC screening committee have rejected the decision, describing it as the “biggest joke of the year.”

The seven-man panel, led by Barrister Obinna Uzor, on Friday disqualified seven of the nine aspirants vying for the party’s ticket ahead of the December 13 shadow election.

Those affected include former Deputy Governor and APC National Secretary Sen. Iyiola Omisore, immediate past Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), and Babatunde Haketer Oralusi.

The committee cited failure to meet nomination requirements under Articles 9.3(i), 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution, and Paragraph 6(c) of the party’s guidelines. In its 6-page report, the panel cleared only Hon. Mulikat Adeola Jimoh and Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, stating they fulfilled the regulatory requirements under party rules and the Electoral Act.

At a joint press conference after submitting their appeals, Sen. Omisore called the disqualification a politically motivated move, alleging that the screening panel chairman faced “intense pressure from powerful interests” aiming to sideline leading aspirants in favour of a preferred candidate allegedly supported by the presidency.

The aggrieved aspirants accused party insiders of attempting to manipulate the process and impose their preferred candidate on the contest.

“This report is the joke of 2025,” he declared. “People have taken partisanship beyond politics. The committee wrote three contradictory reports—one to the secretary, one to the leadership, and another somewhere else. Even as we speak, none of us has officially received anything.

“They told us the Villa wanted their candidate”

The former APC national secretary alleged that the screening chairman personally informed aspirants that certain figures were pushing for the disqualification of all major contenders to pave the way for a favored aspirant

“The chairman told us from day one that phone calls were coming from everywhere,” he said. “He told us outright that ‘they want to disqualify all of you because their candidate is from the Villa.’ So what happened is not surprising.”

According to Omisore, who was a former deputy governor in the state, the entire two day screening exercise was a procedural mess.

He noted that as the time of addressing reporters, none of the disqualified aspirants is aware of the specific allegations against them, nor have they been provided evidence of non-compliance.

“What are the accusations? We have not seen anything,” he said. “Even our letters were not delivered to us. How do you disqualify people without giving them the basis?”

The governorship hopeful faulted the committee’s claim that most aspirants failed to meet the nomination threshold.

Citing his own Senatorial zone, Omisore noted that the Ife zone alone had over 230,000 valid party members.

Asked to share what transpired between him and the panel, Omisore said, “I am the only one that have met them. But we have the same reservations . So far, it is so good that all of us will meet the appeal panel individually.

“I asked them what the allegations are because we haven’t seen any. We haven’t been written. So, what is the basis of the disqualification? You said we didn’t have nominators, five per local government. But the law says he who alleges must prove. They should have used another method to disqualify us.

When asked if he is hopeful of the leeway provided by the screening committee through the National Working Committee (NWC), Omisore said: “I am hopeful. It was a fake screening. The NWC members know our pedigree. They know the truth.”

He, however, declined to speculate on his next move if the NWC upholds the disqualification.

“You can’t think ahead for us,” he replied. “Let’s get there first.”

Meanwhile, another disqualified aspirant, Omoba Dotun Babayemi, said he was at the screening appeal to plead with the NWC through the committee.

“I am not here to protest or challenge the verdict of the screening committee but to appeal NWC through the screening appeal committee to review the decision and clear me to contest the primary election.

Only four of the disqualified aspirants appeared before the panel by the time the report was being filed.

  • Nigeria must come first, COAS charges officers, soldiers

Nigeria must come first, COAS charges officers, soldiers

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Saturday charged officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to place the nation above every personal consideration as the Army commissioned 250 new officers from the Executive Commission Course 2/2025 at the Jaji Military Cantonment.

Addressing the passing-out cadets at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry Parade Ground, Shaibu described their commissioning as a milestone earned through sacrifice, resilience and unwavering commitment to national service.

He reminded the new officers that they were now full stakeholders in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and must be guided at all times by the principle that “Nigeria must come first” in every action and decision throughout their careers.

Many of the officers, he noted, would soon be deployed to operational theatres where their courage, discipline and training would be tested. He urged them to fall back on the knowledge, skills and values instilled in them while remaining focused and adaptable.

The COAS assured them that they would never face challenges alone, stressing that the Nigerian Army officers’ corps is built on camaraderie, loyalty and shared commitment to the fatherland. He urged them to uphold these values as they prepare for the realities of command.

Shaibu emphasized sound judgment, strategic planning and responsibility, warning that leadership carries both consequences and rewards. “Always have a plan. A bad plan is better than none,” he told the new officers.

He reiterated the Army’s dedication to improving personnel welfare and supporting their career development, urging them to pursue continuous professional growth in line with his vision of a more adaptable, combat-ready and resilient force.

The Army chief also reaffirmed the unwavering subordination of the military to democratic authority, describing respect for constitutional governance as the foundation of professionalism. He charged all personnel to be proud defenders of democracy and remain apolitical in the discharge of their duties.

Shaibu commended the Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Maj.-Gen. Frank Etim, and his team for successfully shaping the cadets into officers ready for field operations. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustained support to the Army.

Earlier, Maj.-Gen. Etim highlighted that the course, which commenced on 6 September 2025, was deliberately structured to instill leadership, physical fitness, integrity and loyalty. The cadets were also trained in counter-terrorism and counterinsurgency tactics to prepare them for current operational challenges.

He declared the new officers fully prepared for higher responsibilities and urged them to remain steadfast as they step into command roles. “Be prepared for uncharted challenges. Yield to nothing,” he charged.

Shaibu thanked Governor Uba Sani and the people of Kaduna State for their consistent support to the Army and wished the new officers fulfilling careers as they formally join the officer corps.
