Osun speaker, lawmakers storm PDP primary venue, clash with INEC officials

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, along with some lawmakers and their aides, on Tuesday stormed the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary to confront officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and party members.

Egbedun, accompanied by his deputy, Hon. Akinyode Oyewusi, and other lawmakers, arrived at Adolak Event Centre shortly after the primary winner was declared, expressing opposition to the exercise.

A video circulating on social media showed Egbedun pointing at the INEC Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Olurode, dressed in a blue native attire, after which one of his aides reportedly attacked the official.

The Deputy Speaker, Oyewusi, intervened, ordering the aides to cease the assault.

The Speaker later entered the hall, angrily declaring that those at the venue had no right to conduct a party primary in Osun State.

Speaking to newsmen, Egbedun warned Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, against using Osun State as a springboard for his presidential ambition.

He said, “I am the Speaker of Osun, I am a leader in my state and in the PDP. We were on the floor of the house when we received calls that some people were here, all the way from Oyo State, to come just to have a vote that we call a drama.”

“I am a leader of PDP and a bona fide member of the Party. I used the PDP ticket to win my election in 2023. So it’s very strange to see videos of people calling themselves PDP members. I could remember that there was a message that there was going to be a Congress. We were waiting for them, and we received another message that the Congress had been postponed.”

He warned, “This is a message to Gov Seyi Makinde, if he is desperate to become President come 2027, he should use another state as a tool, not Osun state. We are bona fide PDP members; we have 25 House of Assembly members, 5 Rep members, and senators.

“For a governor from another state to come to our state to dictate to us, we won’t take that. This is a message to everybody that we won’t take this anymore. They came here to do what I can call a drama, and this will be the end of it.”

He reiterated, “We do not have any notifications whatsoever from any office. I am the Speaker, and a governor from another state will come to dictate to us; we won’t take that. We will have a meeting and decide on what to do.”

  • PDP, APC trade words over welfare, recruitment in Ondo Amotekun Corps

PDP, APC trade words over welfare, recruitment in Ondo Amotekun Corps

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state has criticised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa over his handling of the state’s Amotekun Corps, accusing him of ignoring persistent welfare complaints from operatives while publicly backing the leadership of the security outfit.

In a statement on Tuesday, the party’s director of media and public communications, Wándé Àjàyí, said the recent commissioning of the Amotekun Command headquarters and the announcement of fresh recruitment were being used to mask what he termed the “disturbing reality” confronting serving officers.

But in a swift response, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the PDP’s allegations as “misguided” and an attempt to politicise matters of state security.

The APC said Aiyedatiwa’s foremost responsibility is the protection of lives and property in Ondo State, adding that his support for the Amotekun leadership is driven by the need to maintain stability and enhance operational efficiency amid evolving security threats nationwide.

However, the PDP alleged that Amotekun personnel across the state have repeatedly raised concerns over unpaid salaries, lack of appointment letters, poor welfare, stalled promotions, and the absence of job security.

It noted that some operatives had petitioned the government over unpaid allowances and alleged arbitrary redeployments without receiving any meaningful response.

The statement further cited investigative reports that purportedly exposed irregularities in the agency’s payroll system, including claims that the refusal to issue appointment letters had created a compromised structure capable of accommodating ghost workers.

According to the PDP, petitions from officers in all three senatorial districts have been submitted to the government but remain unaddressed.

The opposition party further accused Aiyedatiwa of overlooking the grievances while offering what it described as “unwavering public backing” to the Amotekun Corps Commandant – a posture it said undermines morale and shields alleged administrative misconduct.

The PDP also berated the governor’s announcement of plans to recruit 500 new operatives, describing it as politically motivated and insensitive to the plight of current officers.

Expanding the corps, the party argued, without resolving existing welfare and structural issues, would deepen the crisis within the agency.

To restore confidence, the PDP urged the governor to clear all outstanding salaries and allowances owed to operatives, issue proper appointment letters, address all pending petitions, and ensure transparent promotion and posting procedures.

It also demanded a comprehensive audit of the Amotekun payroll before any recruitment exercise begins.

“Security must be based on integrity, fairness, and transparency. A government that neglects the welfare of security workers while defending those at the top cannot claim to be committed to public safety,” the PDP said in the copy of the statement.

The APC, in a statement released by his spokesman, Steve Otaloro, highlighted the recent commissioning of a modern Command and Control Centre, a state-of-the-art training auditorium, and the ongoing recruitment of the fifth batch of Amotekun operatives as “bold and proactive steps” aimed at strengthening the state’s security architecture.

“At a time when communities across Nigeria are grappling with rising security challenges, Ondo State cannot afford to slow down or play politics with the safety of its people,” it said.

The governing party insisted that the Aiyedatiwa administration has not ignored welfare issues, saying matters relating to salaries, documentation, and structural adjustments are already being addressed “systematically and transparently” without fanfare or political theatrics.

“What the PDP calls ‘shielding’ is merely the governor refusing to politicise internal administrative processes. Welfare reforms are ongoing, and the government remains committed to ensuring that every legitimate officer receives what is due in line with established procedures and available resources,” it said.

The APC argued that expanding the corps while addressing internal issues aligns with global security practices, adding that the PDP’s attempt to create a conflict between welfare and recruitment reflects a poor understanding of how security institutions operate.

“You do not weaken a security force because there are administrative issues. You strengthen it while resolving them,” the party stated.

The ruling party accused the PDP of attempting to destabilise the Amotekun Corps through politically motivated attacks and maintained that security should not be used as a partisan tool.

“The APC stands firmly with Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as he continues to take decisive steps to secure the lives and property of the people. Security is a collective priority, not a political weapon,” the statement added.

  • Reps to investigate recovered NSIPA’s N30 billion funds

Reps to investigate recovered NSIPA’s N30 billion funds

The House of Representatives said it would investigate the total funds recovered from the National Social Insurance Protection Agency (NSIPA) during the 2024–2025 investigations to determine their current status and custodianship of the funds.

The investigation is to identify issues delaying the release of the funds to the appropriate Agencies with the aim of facilitating the prompt recommencement of the social investment programmes.

In a resolution following a motion of urgent public importance by Saidu Musa Abdullahi (APC), Niger, the House resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to engage with the relevant agencies to obtain all necessary information and clarifications relating to the recovered funds, and also obtain a clear implementation and disbursement plan from NSIPA showing how the recovered funds will be utilized once released.

Moving the motion, Abdullahi recalled that the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) is the statutory institution responsible for implementing the Federal Government’s flagship social protection programmes, including the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), National Home Grown School Feeding Program,(NHGSFP) and the Grant for Vulnerable Groups (GVG) been initiatives strategically designed to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty, improve nutrition and school enrolment, promote financial inclusion, expand livelihood opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs, and strengthen national socioeconomic stability.

He disclosed that on 8th January 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a decisive move to uphold accountability and transparency, suspended NSIPA operations for six weeks to enable a comprehensive investigation into alleged financial infractions by relevant security and anti-corruption agencies.

According to him, the investigation resulted in the tracing, freezing, and recovery of substantial public funds belonging to the Agency from Deposit Money Banks and Payment Service Providers, including funds appropriated for Trader Moni, MarketMoni, FarmerMoni, and Grants for Vulnerable Groups which are programmes central to the Renewed Hope Agenda’s commitment to supporting households, petty traders, women, farmers, and vulnerable Nigerians.

He said credible sources have indicated that recovered funds estimated at over ₦30 billion have not been remitted into NSIPA’s designated Treasury Single Account (TSA), thereby stalling programme implementation and leaving millions of intended beneficiaries without the social and economic support envisioned by the Federal Government.

He expressed concern that the prolonged non-release of these funds undermines the Renewed Hope Agenda by slowing down poverty alleviation efforts, weakening small-scale enterprises, exacerbating hardship in rural and urban communities, delaying local economic stimulation, and eroding public trust in the government’s social protection commitments.

The Nigerian lawmaker said that continued uncertainty over the exact location, custodial status, and administrative handling of the recovered funds poses fiscal risks, disrupts programme timelines, and may create institutional bottlenecks across related national social intervention initiatives.

He said, despite the Presidential approval lifting the suspension on NSIPA operations on 21st January 2025, the Agency has been unable to resume full implementation of its programmes, allegedly due to the non-availability of recovered funds expected to have been released, thereby exposing millions of Nigerians to prolonged socioeconomic distress.

He said the National Assembly has the constitutional responsibility to ensure accountability, transparency, and prudent management of public resources, particularly funds designated for poverty reduction and social investment programmes.

  • Naval Dockyard provides free medical services to Iru residents

Naval Dockyard provides free medical services to Iru residents

The Nigerian Navy, through the Naval Dockyard Limited, has extended free medical services to residents of Iru land, Lagos, as part of its corporate social responsibility to host communities.

The medical outreach, tagged 2025 Medical Rhapsody, held at the palace of the Oniru of Iru-Land, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, was aimed at providing healthcare support to residents who lack regular access to medical services.

The end-of-the-year medical Rhapsody featured free medical consultation, free medication, eye check-up, dental check-up, blood sugar test, blood pressure check, malaria test, and free HIV/AIDS screening.

Speaking at the event, the Admiral Superintendent of the Nigerian Navy Dockyard Limited, Lagos, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, said the programme was designed to ease the burden of prevailing economic challenges by offering medical consultations, screening, and treatment at no cost.

The Rear Admiral, who was represented by Commodore Igbani Agwu, the initiative reflected the Navy’s commitment to compassion, solidarity, and good neighbourliness, especially towards communities hosting its facilities.

According to him, the relationship between the Naval Dockyard and Iru-Land dates back several decades, noting that the Navy has continued to contribute to the development and security of the community.

“The Dockyard engages traders and artisans within this area and also provides security, potable water, and responds to fire emergencies within Iru-Land and beyond. Our medical centre is also open to residents of this community and others in Lagos for quality and affordable healthcare services,” he said.

He added that the core objective of the outreach was to provide medical care to individuals who might not be able to afford standard healthcare due to economic or social challenges.

“The primary aim of this noble exercise, therefore, is to provide vital healthcare services to individuals who may not have regular access to medical care due to economic or social barriers. This may have caused them to seek alternative treatments or care that would not have addressed the root causes of the illness and may have resulted in worsening conditions or negative repercussions. Indeed, through this outreach, our capable and experienced team of medical personnel would address the immediate healthcare needs of our deserving community members by offering medical consultations, screenings, and essential treatments at zero cost to the beneficiaries.

“Additionally, the Naval Dockyard Limited aims to raise awareness about preventive healthcare practices to promote overall well-being among the members of the community who need but do not have access to such medical screening and treatment by qualified practitioners. I am therefore most delighted to be in a position to facilitate this noble outreach as part of the Navy’s and the Yard’s contributions to improving community health, building trust and friendship, as well as supporting the efforts of Lagos State and the Federal Government of Nigeria. This will, in no small measure, foster better cooperation among the Navy, the Yard, and our dear Iru-Land.

“Most importantly, our ultimate objective goes beyond the provision of immediate medical care. Indeed, we aspire to foster a lasting impact by empowering individuals to take charge of their health and encouraging more proactive approaches to wellness. By offering education on disease prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, and access to available facilities, we are using this avenue to reach out and give back to the peace-loving and progressive people of Iru-Land”, he said.

Commending the Naval Dockyard Limited, the Oniru of Iru-Land, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, described the medical outreach as timely and impactful.

He said the Navy had remained consistent in supporting the community through medical interventions and security collaboration, adding that the initiative had become an annual event.

“We had this programme last year around this period, and I am happy that they have returned this year. This medical outreach will benefit my people, and I am encouraged by the level of commitment of the Nigerian Naval Dockyard Limited,” the monarch said.

The traditional ruler lauded the Navy’s role in securing the community, noting that peace was critical to development.

He expressed hope for further collaboration in the area of youth empowerment, particularly through skills acquisition.

“We also want to see our youths benefit from the Dockyard’s skills acquisition programmes. We are already discussing logistics that will enable our young people to be empowered in areas the Dockyard is known for,” he added.

  • I was once offered a script to sleep with a dog – Nkechi Blessing

I was once offered a script to sleep with a dog – Nkechi Blessing

Actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has revealed how she was once offered a script to sleep with a dog in her early days in Nollywood.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Nkechi said she turned down the role, prioritising her image and long-term career prospects.

She explained her decision was driven by the desire to avoid being typecast or associated with explicit content.

“Despite being a newcomer, I was given a script to sleep with a dog. I rejected it because I can’t start my career like that. Imagine my first ever movie, I am sleeping with a dog.

“It doesn’t make sense. It is going to be a tag because whatever you start with is what people would associate you with. I didn’t want to be renowned as someone who sleeps with dogs in movies.

“So, I rejected that script. But immediately, I threw it down, and so many girls grabbed it. I’m not sure any of them are in the limelight today,” she stated.
