Major web outage hits X, ChatGPT, others amid widespread Cloudflare error

A number of websites experienced temporary disruption after a technical issue at Cloudflare caused numerous of them to go offline.

Users attempting to access platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and OpenAi’s ChatGPT were met with error notices indicating that Cloudflare’s systems were preventing pages from loading.

Cloudflare, a key internet infrastructure provider, supports many essential online functions from shielding websites against cyber attacks to helping them remain stable under heavy traffic.

In a status update, the company announced: “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers. Further detail will be provided as more information becomes available.”

Many affected users encountered an alert referring to an “internal server error on Cloudflare’s network”, along with a prompt to “please try again in a few minutes.”

The outage appears to have begun around 12:30 p.m. Nigerian time.

Although some sites briefly loaded when refreshed, the issue seems to have been resolved now as the major sites are now back online.

  • Tinubu tasks Customs to break border barriers to reshape economic future of Africa

Tinubu tasks Customs to break border barriers to reshape economic future of Africa

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged Customs Administration across African nations to break border barriers, dismantle inefficient borders, modernise their operations, and commit to a unified trade architecture capable of reshaping the continent’s economic future.

Declaring open the maiden Customs Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT) Summit at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said Africa’s prosperity depends on deliberate reforms that convert its large market and population into a functional economic bloc.

Tinubu told delegates that Africa must replace fragmented markets with coordinated policy implementation, stressing that every country must demonstrate political will, institutional alignment, and the readiness to deploy technology that simplifies trade.

He said, “The administration’s reform, exchange rate unification, fuel subsidy removal, port modernisation, and stronger Customs digitalisation, were designed to create a trade-friendly environment that could compete globally and power Nigeria’s continental ambitions.”

The President added that Nigeria’s National Single Window, set to go live in March 2026, will significantly reduce clearance timelines from 21 days to under seven, thereby fully aligning the country with the AfCFTA’s digital trade requirements and positioning Nigeria as a standard-setter in port automation.

He urged African governments to transform commitments into measurable outcomes that traders, manufacturers, and logistics operators can feel daily, saying, “Integration cannot be declared. It must be engineered.”

Speaking at the event, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said the extension of his mandate by President Tinubu included key performance indicators directly tied to the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He stated that the Nigeria Customs Service has, over the last three months, intensified its engagement with Customs administrations across Africa to ensure that Customs is properly integrated into the AfCFTA implementation structures.

He recalled recent engagements in Ghana with the AfCFTA Secretariat, emphasising that Customs must drive rules of origin enforcement, preferential duty implementation, and trade preference administration, core elements that determine whether AfCFTA works in reality or remains aspirational.

The CGC stated that implementing a free trade agreement requires significant capacity building and a strong political commitment, as it involves the progressive suspension of Customs duties among member states.

He explained that past regional integration efforts, including the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, suffered setbacks because participating countries failed to implement commitments consistently, stressing that AfCFTA must avoid that pattern.

According to him, African economies are divided into regions with varying levels of readiness. Still, recent engagements have helped build consensus that Customs must sit at the centre of AfCFTA execution.

Adeniyi said his persistent advocacy for Customs inclusion at continental meetings led to the emergence of C-PACT, a framework designed to foster direct partnerships among African Customs administrations, private-sector operators, regulators, and international partners.

He said Nigeria’s export volume has increased by more than 30 percent in two years, and the objective now is to redirect more of that trade into African markets where the opportunities are larger and the impact on continental growth more meaningful.

The Customs CG further commended AfreximBank, the AfCFTA Secretariat, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, commercial banks, NPA, and other agencies for aligning with the Customs Service to deepen trade facilitation.

He also announced that 30 African Customs administrations have registered for the conference, including 22 represented at the Director-General level, with strong participation from West, Central, East, Southern, and North Africa.

He added that for the first time, the Secretary-General of the World Customs Organisation is attending a Nigeria-hosted Customs conference, signalling strong global support for Nigeria’s leadership role.

He said the conference will begin with private-sector sessions to understand the challenges traders face, including non-tariff barriers, cargo delays, and inconsistent implementation of trade preferences across Africa.

Representing the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Anite, stated that customs reforms are central to Nigeria’s fiscal transformation.

She said efficient border operations reduce the cost of doing business, boost investor confidence, and help Nigeria compete in regional and global markets.

Anite noted the government’s support for the complete digitisation of Customs operations, improved risk management systems, and harmonisation with global standards.

On her part, the Minister of Trade, Investment and Industry, Jumoke Oduwole, said the AfCFTA remains Africa’s most crucial economic instrument but warned that structural delays and outdated systems still hinder its impact.

She highlighted reforms undertaken with the Nigeria Customs Service, including tariff concession schedules and a dedicated air-cargo export corridor to East and Southern Africa.

World Customs Organisation Secretary-General Ian Saunders said Africa’s economic forecast for 2025 shows strong growth, but the continent’s ability to harness that potential depends heavily on Customs efficiency.

Recalling one of the WCO’s motto, “Borders divide; Customs connects,” Sanders said, the C-PACT aligns closely with the WCO’s mission to support Customs administrations globally through standards, capacity building, and operational guidance.

Meanwhile, AfreximBank’s Executive Vice President for Intra-African Trade, Kanayo Awani, stated that the Bank is supporting Customs modernisation across Africa, including transit-bond guarantees, digital tracking systems, and the AfCFTA Adjustment Fund to help countries offset tariff revenue losses.

She said Africa cannot realise the benefits of AfCFTA without harmonised systems and interoperable Customs operations.

AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene said that implementing the agreement’s annexes on Customs cooperation, transit, and trade facilitation requires Customs leadership at every stage.

Ex-Reps aspirant Agba joins push for young women in governance

‎A former House of Representatives aspirant from Cross River State, Martha Agba, has advocated for the inclusion of young women in governance.

‎She joined national delegates at Nigeria’s first-ever International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV), where she represented the interests and voices of young women in governance.

‎The landmark event had the theme: “Shaping Digital Governance: Collaboration and Inclusivity.”

It marked Nigeria’s debut hosting of the globally recognised ICEGOV conference and brought together policymakers, technology experts, innovators, and governance advocates.

They explored the expanding frontier of digital public administration.

‎Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, emphasised that the future of governance must be driven by innovation, collaboration, and the collective intelligence of multiple stakeholders.

‎According to him, digital transformation cannot evolve in isolation, noting that “innovation happening in clusters makes implementation faster and ensures that impact cuts across sectors, communities and demographics.”

‎Agba described her participation as an honour and a strategic opportunity to push for broader representation of young women in governance, particularly in emerging digital policy spaces.

‎She noted that Nigeria’s hosting of ICEGOV signaled a major shift in national commitment to building inclusive, technology-driven public institutions.

‎“This conference demonstrates that Nigeria is ready to take its place in global digital leadership,” she said.

‎“For young women in governance, it opens doors to engage in decision-making processes that shape the digital future.

‎”We must ensure that inclusivity remains at the centre of every innovation we pursue.”

‎She commended the Federal Government and NITDA for creating platforms where diverse voices, including youth and women, can contribute to national and global conversations on digital governance.

‎Agba expressed optimism that the outcomes of the conference would influence transformative policies capable of expanding digital opportunities across rural and urban communities in Nigeria.

‎With Nigeria’s first ICEGOV event successfully held, stakeholders say the country is now positioned to accelerate digital governance reforms anchored on collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity, principles that Hon. Martha Agba remains committed to championing.

ASUU threatens fresh strike, demands immediate action from FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the federal government to urgently address critical issues affecting the education sector or face a nationwide industrial action.

The warning was issued on Tuesday during an interactive session in Calabar by the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Calabar Zone, Comrade Ikechukwu Igwenyi.

ASUU insisted on the completion of renegotiation and full implementation of all existing agreements with clear timelines, alongside fair remuneration and improved working conditions for lecturers to stem the ongoing exodus of academic talent from Nigerian universities.

The union also demanded the immediate release of three and a half months’ outstanding salaries, all withheld payments, refund of third-party deductions, and settlement of all promotion arrears.

Additionally, ASUU called for payment of the outstanding 25–35 percent wage award with consequential adjustments, adequate budgetary allocation to education, and sustainable funding for the university system.

The union urged the federal government to respect university autonomy and stop imposing policies that undermine academic freedom.

In a statement jointly signed by Igwenyi and nine other zonal leaders, ASUU threatened to embark on strike if the government fails to comply with its demands.

The signatories include Comrade Happiness Uduak (IPZC, Calabar Zone); Comrade Chidi Mba (Chairperson, ASUU ABSU); Comrade Frank Nnamso Ndarake (Chairperson, ASUU EBSU); Comrade Louis Omeneyi (Chairperson, ASUU FUNAI); Comrade Patrick Ushie (Chairperson, ASUU UNICROSS); Comrade Peter Ubi (Chairperson, ASUU Unical); Comrade Valentine Ntui (Chairperson, ASUU UEE); and Comrade Opeyemi Olajide (Chairperson, ASUU UNIUYO).

“We shall remain unbowed, unbroken, and unwavering in this just struggle, with profound faith, secured in the knowledge that victory is sure,” ASUU stated.

The union emphasized that education is not a privilege, but a right, and that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that the education sector is adequately funded.

ASUU also pointed out that the problem is not a lack of funds, but a lack of political will to invest in the development of Nigeria.

“We shall rebuild the Nigerian university system of our dreams with the ashes of the struggle,” ASUU concluded.

  • NBA condemns Kebbi school abductions, military killings

NBA condemns Kebbi school abductions, military killings

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the series of violent attacks that happened in the country on Monday, calling for immediate and decisive government action to halt what it described as the “growing culture of brazen violence” across Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the NBA General Secretary, Mobolaji Ojibara, the association decried the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State after armed terrorists stormed the school hostel, killed a teacher, and engaged security operatives in a gun duel.

The association noted that the attack was a grim reminder of the longstanding pattern of impunity and mass abductions in northern Nigeria.

According to the statement, “Just hours earlier, Nigeria lost one of its senior military officers, Brigadier-General M. Uba, in an ambush by ISWAP terrorists in Borno State. That brutal assault followed another coordinated ambush in the same region, resulting in additional tragic deaths of soldiers.”

The NBA described the two incidents as part of escalating terrorist aggression targeting both civilians and security forces.

“These terrorists are not only attacking unarmed civilians; they are now openly targeting members of the armed forces. The grim message is clear: no one is safe,” the NBA stated.

The association also referenced a recent intelligence alert issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), warning of planned ISWAP attacks in Ondo and Kogi States, describing the threat as a “clear and present danger.”

The NBA president, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, called for decisive leadership and demanded a time-bound rescue mission for the abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and a full public inquiry into the security lapses that enabled the killing of Brigadier-General Uba and his colleagues.

He further urges the prosecution of all collaborators, financiers, and enablers of terrorism, including those within or outside the security system, and pressed for the complete implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative to protect educational institutions in high-risk areas.

He praised the teacher who died defending students during the Kebbi attack and paid tribute to Brigadier-General Uba and the fallen soldiers.

“This is not just about security. It is about leadership. It is about justice. Above all, it is about the soul of this nation. Silence is complicity. Delay is dangerous. The time to act is now,” he said.

Kano APC chieftain begs Akpabio, Barau over $10m bribery allegation

A Kano-based chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mal. Alwan Hassan has apologised to the leadership of the Senate for wrongfully accusing them of receiving $10 million to stall the confirmation of Ramat Abdullahi as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He particularly apologised to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and his Deputy, Senator Barau Jibrin, admitting that the allegation against them and the leadership of the upper chamber of the National Assembly was “not only untrue but also unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.”

Last month, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent a letter to the Senate seeking Ramat’s confirmation as NERC’s chairman, but after over a month since the letter was read and deliberated upon at plenary, the Senate is yet to announce the confirmation of the nominee.

The development led to a group of party loyalists from Kano State staging a protest at the National Assembly, while several individuals demanded immediate confirmation of Ramat.

Hassan, who joined others to protest the delay, accused the Senate leadership of deliberately stalling the confirmation.

Tendering an unreserved apology at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Hassan said his earlier action was propelled by the information available to him at that time, adding that he has since found out that the allegation lacked fact.

According to him, “I referenced a claim alleging that they received $10 million in bribes to stall Engr. Ramat’s confirmation. That allegation came from conversations I had while trying to understand the issues.

“I have since come to realise that the claim was not only untrue but unfair and uncharitable to both the National Assembly and its leadership.

“I therefore retract that statement fully and unreservedly, and I apologise to the National Assembly and its leadership for those accusations.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy,” he added.

The APC leader then appealed to the Senate to confirm Ramat for the job as requested by President Tinubu.

“I understand the seriousness of governance, particularly the critical role the parliament plays in our democracy. I do not take that role for granted. And it is precisely because of that respect that I once again, like Oliver Twist, appeal—humbly and sincerely—to the good conscience of our distinguished National Assembly to please take a second look at the case of Engr. Ramat Abdullahi and confirm him.

“I genuinely believe he is a worthy leader who can help transform the regulation of Nigeria’s energy sector,” he concluded.
