The Director of Finance and Supply at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Kunemofa Asu, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Leadership and Financial Management.
The prestigious recognition, conferred by the American Management University, California, USA, was presented during the 15th Peace Achievers Award 2025.
The honorary degree formed part of the institution’s partnership with the Peace Ambassador Agency, organisers of the Peace Achievers International Award.
Asu, a Fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), also holds active membership in several notable professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), the Association of Chartered Certified System Accountants, the Institute of Strategic Management, Nigeria (ISMN), and the Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Risk Management Institute, among others.
Her latest honour comes on the heels of her recent recognition as one of the 100 Most Notable Peace Icons in Africa, acknowledging her contributions and dedication to public service.
She has also completed various executive and management programmes within and outside Nigeria.
These include Corporate Governance and Leadership at the Metropolitan School of Business and Management (UK), Leadership and Corporate Governance at Lagos Business School, and an Executive Leadership Development Programme in Dubai, UAE.

Delivering a keynote address titled Whispers that Moves Mountains, Babaeko held guests spellbound as they listened keenly to a man whose life, style, and business achievements have become morale boosters for young and upcoming entrepreneurs, especially in the marketing communications industry.
At the event, Babaeko spoke with the cadence of a motivational speaker and the artistry of a poet. His words carried rhythm and weight, weaving together history, determination, and faith. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned the deadly attack on a Government Girls School in the Maga community of Kebbi State, calling for stronger protection measures for children, schools, and education personnel across Nigeria.
In a statement issued to the Nation by Sussan Akila, Communication Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, the agency described the incident— which led to the killing of the school’s vice-principal and the reported abduction of 25 students— as “deeply tragic” and unacceptable.
“UNICEF strongly condemns the reported attack on a Government Girls School in the Maga community of Kebbi State in Northwest Nigeria, which resulted in the death of the school’s vice-principal and the reported abduction of 25 students,” the statement said.
UNICEF urged the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students while stressing the urgent need to reinforce the protection of learning environments.
“This tragic incident is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and the personnel they rely upon to learn safely,” Akila noted. “We stand with the affected community at this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost their loved ones, and we wish a full recovery for those injured.”
The agency emphasized that students, schools, and education workers are protected under international law and insisted that perpetrators of such attacks must be held accountable.
Akila recalled that Nigeria endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration in 2015— an international commitment outlining steps to preserve the civilian nature of schools and ensure safe access to education even in conflict situations.
According to UNICEF, the organisation continues to work with government partners, civil society, and communities to strengthen child protection systems and promote safe and inclusive learning environments nationwide.
“These systems and environments must be reinforced to prevent future tragedies,” the statement added.
UNICEF further called on all stakeholders to intensify efforts toward full implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration, stressing that “No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education.”
The Kaduna state government has partnered with UKAID and other development organisations to launch a new initiative aimed at addressing the perennial farmers–herders conflict and strengthening community resilience across four northern states.
The intervention, known as the Promoting Agropastoralism, Reconciliation and Resilience for Sustainable Livelihood and Peace (PARSULP) project, is implemented under the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) programme and covers Kaduna, Benue, Plateau, and Katsina states.
Speaking at the launch, the general manager of the Kaduna State Agricultural Development Agency (KADA), Muhammad A. Rili, said the project aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to promoting agricultural growth and peacebuilding. He noted that development cannot thrive where communities are plagued by recurring conflict.
Rili said the intervention will help reduce tensions between farmers and herders, promote dialogue, and strengthen existing community structures for conflict prevention. He stressed that sustainable resource management and the inclusion of women and youth are critical for the success of the initiative.
Earlier, the Executive Director of Global Peace Development (GPD), Ebruke Onajite Esike, said the PARSULP project seeks to transform recurring agropastoral conflicts into opportunities for cooperation, resilience, and sustainable development.
He noted that violent clashes over land and water have displaced thousands and eroded social cohesion across the region.
Esike said the project, funded by UKAID through Tetra Tech with ActionAid Nigeria providing supervisory support, will directly benefit 4,410 people and indirectly impact more than 19 million others. He disclosed that participatory rural appraisals conducted in 45 wards informed a Community Peace and Resilience Plan unveiled at the event.
According to him, the plan promotes agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, and joint livelihood initiatives designed to encourage collaboration rather than competition.
He added that the project will strengthen early-warning structures, support reconciliation efforts, and advance forest protection through policy advocacy.
The event was attended by representatives of the Kaduna State Government, KADA, security agencies, local government officials, community leaders, and civil society organisations.

He commended Tinubu for his forthright remarks at the Judges’ Conference, where he openly acknowledged public concern about delays, integrity deficits, and access to justice within the Nigerian judicial process.
President Tinubu stated, “We must acknowledge, with candour, that public perception of the judicial process has not always been favourable. Citizens have expressed frustration at delays, concerns about integrity, and anxiety over access to justice.
“These perceptions, whether wholly justified or not, cannot be ignored. They call upon us to reflect, to reform, and to restore. Ultimately, justice does not exist for the Bench or the Bar; it exists for the people. Their faith in the judicial process is the foundation of our national stability.”
Okechukwu noted that President Tinubu has already set in motion the foundational pillars of judicial rebirth—reforms, capacity building, and modernization. What is now required, he said, is a decisive combination of discipline, a relentless war against corruption, welfare for the masses, and deep, consistent implementation of the President’s vision.
He concluded that fully enforcing the spirit of the Magna Carta would not only strengthen Nigeria’s democracy but also restore enduring public confidence in the justice system.
The Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) and the Convention on Business Integrity (CIB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting transparency, reducing unreceipted charges, and improving efficiency across Nigeria’s ports and logistics corridors.
The event, held at Providence by Mantis Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, brought together industry stakeholders, development partners, and representatives of the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN).
CRFFN Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Igwe Kingsley Onyekechi, described the agreement as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s push for cleaner, more transparent port operations.
According to him, the partnership aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and ongoing reforms under the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), particularly initiatives targeting ports and customs efficiency.
He said the MoU would deploy internationally tested anti-corruption tools, already effective offshore to the land side of ports, enabling real-time reporting of bottlenecks, undue demands, and operational delays.
“This MoU is all about introducing transparency in the freight forwarding business. It will enhance the ease of doing business, reduce costs, and improve the flow of cargo across our ports and logistics corridors. These tools are for everyone: importers, exporters, freight forwarders, terminal operators, and government agencies. They help users mitigate challenges in real time,” he said.
Onyekechi stressed that the tools are not designed to witch-hunt operators but to sanitise the system and discourage backdoor practices that inflate the cost of goods.
“When deals are done without transparency, justice is threatened. We want a cleaner, more transparent environment. If users face challenges, whether from state or non-state actors, they can get help immediately. But those using the tools must also be clean; no one goes to equity with dirty hands,” he said.
He added that the reforms would ultimately benefit everyday Nigerians by lowering logistics costs, which contribute significantly to rising market prices.
CIB co-founder, Olusoji Apampa, said the partnership builds on progress achieved at the marine side of Nigerian ports, where vessel operations have become more transparent and less prone to harassment and unreceipted payments.
According to him, extending these gains to the land corridor is critical because freight forwarders still encounter numerous informal charges at almost every stage of cargo movement.
“Today, we signed an MoU to provide CRFFN with tools developed by the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, headquartered in Denmark. Beyond providing tools, we will offer training, capacity building, and support on how to receive complaints and follow through to ensure change happens along the land side of the ports and the wider logistics corridors,” he said
Apampa noted that over 80 to 90 percent of goods consumed in Nigeria enter through the ports, meaning every hidden charge eventually reflects in retail prices.
“Many officials don’t realise that unreceived demands go back into freight costs and ultimately into the price of goods in the market. We all shop in the same markets, so this change benefits everyone,” he said.
He added that the initiative would gradually extend beyond the maritime sector into aviation and other logistics areas as part of a broader integrity and governance reform agenda.
Social media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has apologised for his role in a viral in-flight altercation with comedian Mr Jollof on a United Nigeria Airlines flight.
In a video posted on Instagram, Otse took full responsibility for the disruption, saying, “I acted irresponsibly” and apologised to passengers and crew.
He expressed regret for delaying flights and potentially impacting important engagements, including medical emergencies and business contracts.
VDM said, “I would really like to apologise for what happened yesterday on the United Nigerian Airlines. What happened yesterday was not supposed to happen, and I will take full responsibility for it.
“A lot of people on that flight had important things to do, but because of that little irresponsibility from my end, their flight was delayed. Some people might have had medical emergencies, and some had business contracts to sign. I don’t know what that little delay would have cost them, and I really want to apologise.
“Looking back at what happened yesterday, I really didn’t like that part. Even though some people saw everything as a cruise on social media, I acted irresponsibly,” he said.
Otse assured Nigerians that such behavior won’t occur in public spaces, though he couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t happen again.
“I cannot guarantee that it will not happen again. I can only guarantee that it will not happen on the plane, on the bus, or in a public place that will stop people from going to their destination. But I am really, really sorry for yesterday”, he added.
The incident has sparked public backlash, with calls for accountability.
Mr Jollof has also apologised, claiming self-defence.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called on government institutions, civil society groups, religious and traditional leaders, parents, and young people to work together to create a safer and more protective environment for children across the country.
In a message to mark the 2025 World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, commemorated on November 18, the First Lady warned that child protection cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone but requires coordinated, evidence-based actions driven by accurate data and sound policymaking.
She highlighted this year’s theme, “Strengthening the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse Through Evidence-Based Policy Making,” noting that Nigeria must intensify efforts to ensure that every child grows up free from fear and harm.
“We are reminded that protecting children must go beyond words and good intentions. It demands informed action, guided by accurate data, research, and sound policies,” Senator Tinubu said.
She urged all stakeholders to recognise their shared responsibility in preventing abuse, supporting survivors, and ensuring accountability at all levels.
“As a nation, we must ensure that every child grows up free from fear and harm,” she said, adding, “I call on government agencies, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, parents, and young people to work together to create a protective environment where children can feel safe to thrive.”
