General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the ECOWAS Envoy to Niger Republic, expressed confidence on Tuesday that the ongoing crisis in Niger is unlikely to escalate beyond the realm of diplomacy.

Abubakar, who is a former Nigerian Military Head of State, spoke to journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after a meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu, who is the chairman of the authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS.

The meeting also included the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

General Abubakar recently held discussions with ousted Niger President Mohamed Bazoum and the junta leaders in the country.

He conveyed the terms presented by the junta led by Abdouramane Tchiani to ECOWAS.

Abubakar reported that communication has commenced between the West African regional bloc and the military in Niger.

He said that the channel of contact established by ECOWAS through his envoy role has yielded productive results, expressing optimism that tangible progress will soon emerge.

Abubakar said: “As you are aware, the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have made me an envoy to Niger Republic and we were there over the weekend to see the military people and discussed to find a way out of the lacuna we find ourselves.

“So that’s why I’m here this afternoon, together with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, to give a report back to Mr President on our discussions in Niger. I must say that our visit to Niger has been very fruitful and that it has opened an avenue to start talking and hopefully, we’ll get somewhere.”

On the divergence in opinions of both the regional bloc and the junta about return to quick return to democratic rule, Abubakar said: “Well, like I said, we’ve started talking, they have made their own points and then I made my report to the Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of state and President. He will now consult with his colleagues and then the ding-dong starts and we’ll get somewhere hopefully.”

Asked if there was any possibility of avoiding military action, he said: “Hopefully diplomacy will see the better of this. Nobody wants to go to war, it doesn’t pay anybody, but then again, our leaders have said if all fails and I don’t think all will fail, we’ll get somewhere we’ll get out of this mess.”

APGA hails Tinubu over subsidy removal, other policies

The national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sly Ezeokenwa, has expressed appreciation for several policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu, saying that subsidy removal as a significant positive step for the country.

The party listed three major problems hampering growth in the country as politics of religion, ethnicity, and constitutional review.

Speaking at the APGA southeast zonal office in Awka, Anambra state, Ezeokenwa said that critics of the president are overlooking his focus and understanding of the nation’s issues.

Ezeokenwa said: “Those criticizing the president were missing the point because according to him, “Tinubu is focused and knows where the shoe pinches.

“Again, his decision to come up with palliative to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal is another knockout in some of his policies within a few months of he assumed office.

“I believe Mr President came prepared for this job and people should exercise patience and give him some time to settle well. His government will not be like the previous one.”

He hinted that the former governor of the state, Peter Obi, might rejoin APGA, describing him as a student of the APGA Institute of good governance, while he’s still a student of the same institute.

He said the fame Obi had today in Nigeria started as APGA Governor, adding that plans were on the way by the party to reconcile him and other leaders like Chief Chekwad Okorie among others.

He credited Obi’s national recognition to his time as an APGA Governor, stating that the party is working on reconciling him and other leaders like Chief Chekwad Okorie.

He stated: “With these, we can have true federalism which is what the country needs to move forward. However, the country is one and that’s the only way for us to be the number one in the world”

He said what he wanted to do in APGA was to rebrand it, adding that the party would not do it alone without embracing other political parties and ethnic groups.

“It’s going to be an alliance to solve the Nigeria problems. We have to bring every ethnic group together for alignment and realignment.

“Another problem we have in the country is not only leadership but also followership, the last one is even worse. We want Nigeria to be driven by the young people.”

He said the arrangement was on in expanding the party beyond Anambra and southeast, but throughout the country, adding that with such an arrangement, the party would capture more states.

Spyro raises concerns about lyrics encouraging fraudulent behavior

Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, widely known as Spyro, has voiced his criticism of fellow musicians who incorporate suggestive lyrics that might promote fraudulent activities among young people.

He particularly pointed out the lyrics of the hit track “Elon Musk” by the fast-rising artist, Shallipopi, wherein the phrase ‘para dey body’ is used.

Spyro expressed his concern that such lyrics could potentially lead individuals down the path of criminal behaviour.

He argued that such lyrics have the power to influence individuals’ actions over time, as people tend to internalize what they see and hear.

Despite being a secular singer, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner, who identifies as a born-again Christian, cautioned young people against adopting corrupt ideologies.

Medical consultants issue ultimatum to FG, threaten strike if demands not met in 21 days

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging immediate action on the review and implementation of the recently revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) as agreed with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

The consultants’ association emphasized that the circular released by the government only addressed the percentage increase in basic salary, neglecting to apply it to both basic salary and all allowances except hazard allowance.

This omission, they said, has resulted in the exclusion of clinical lecturers (honorary consultants) from the benefits of the revision.

The association further stressed that any increase in salaries should take into account the effects of fuel subsidy removal and the prevailing high inflation rate.

In a statement signed by MDCAN’s president, Victor Makanjuola, the association urgently called for the resolution of issues with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to restore normal operations in government hospitals for effective healthcare delivery.

The statement issued after MDCAN’s extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting outlined their demands.

It read: “We demand the immediate review of the newly revised CONMESS circular and issuance of a new circular that would reflect the agreed percentage on both the Basic Salary and other allowances, apart from hazard allowance. This will ensure that the Clinical Lecturers (Honorary Consultants) would benefit from the upward review.

“We call for the correction of the error of commencement of the implementation of the upward review of CONMESS from 1st June 2023 to 1st January 2023.

“We demand that the upward review of the CONMESS should take into consideration the impacts of the fuel subsidy removal and the high inflationary trend that is currently being experienced.

“We demand the immediate implementation and circularization of the agreed modalities for correcting the shortfalls in remunerations of Clinical Lecturers (Honorary Consultants).

“We appeal for the universal applicability of CONMESS to all Medical and Dental doctors, particularly those in public universities.

“The attention of the Government is once again called to the impact of brain drain in the health sector, which is contributing to burnout among our members and inadequate healthcare workforce to cater to the health of Nigerians. We, therefore, demand the immediate implementation of the upward review of age retirement to 70 years for Consultants and 65 years for other Health workers, as an immediate measure to bridge the ongoing massive brain drain.

“The NEC hopes that all these issues will be satisfactorily resolved within the next 21 days, failing which it can no longer guarantee the present relative industrial harmony within the Government hospitals and our Medical Schools.”
