Spain reach first Women’s World Cup final after beating Sweden

Spain secured their place in a first FIFA Women’s World Cup final after battling to a 2-1 win over Sweden.

Their qualification followed a thrilling finish in the semi-final on Tuesday in Auckland.

Olga Carmona scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute following a pulsating conclusion to the game which saw Sweden substitute Rebecka Blomqvist cancel out teenager, Salma Paralluelo’s goal.

Sweden had the best chance of the first half three minutes before half-time when Nathalie Bjorn lofted a cross to the far post but Fridolina Rolfo’s side-foot shot was pushed away by Cata Coll.

The second half was similarly cagey before Spain carved out an opening with 20 minutes to go.

This was when substitute Paralluelo kept the ball alive but Alba Redondo was unable to steer her shot inside the post.

Spain edged in front with nine minutes to go when Jenni Hermoso’s cross bounced back off Jonna Andersson and Paralluelo swept the ball home.

Sweden leveled with two minutes to go when Lina Hurtig directed a high cross to fellow substitute Rebecka Blomqvist, who steered a fine finish beyond Coll.

But Spain were back in front moments later when a corner was rolled to the edge of the penalty area to Carmona.

The captain’s shot crashed in off the underside of the crossbar, with Sweden goalkeeper Zecira Musovic only getting fingertips to the ball.

Spain will now face Australia or England in the final at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Spain’s Paralluelo, aged 19 years and 275 days, has become the second youngest player to score in a FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final match.

This is after Canada’s Kara Lang (16y 348d) which was also against Sweden in 2003.

An excited Jorge Vilda, Spain coach, said  that they can’t wait to know their opponents.

“We got ahead on the scoreboard and they tied us again. The team overcame it, we scored the winning goal and now we have enormous happiness.

“In the first minutes of the second half, we had a bad time. They were getting very close, but the game changed and we had more bite.

“It went well. We are waiting to know our opponent (in the final). Let’s see who wins. We know both teams well.

“We are in the final of a World Cup. My hair is standing on its ends,” she said.

Spain’s Paralluelo, also adjudged the player of the match, admitted that it was a difficult game against Sweden, adding however that they deserved to be in the final.

“It was a very tough game. It could’ve been difficult to recover from their goal, but we’ve shown that this team can deal with everything.

“We deserved this. We took this little step, and now we need that final push. Now it’s the final. I think we have to do what we’ve done in every match.

“We’ve overcome every challenge and now we face the ultimate challenge, the big one,” she said.

Peter Gerhardsson, Sweden coach expressed disappointment over the result, noting that it was the team’s third loss in the semi-finals.

“I have to watch the game, I really do, before I can make any assessments. Right now I am full of emotions.

“It is the third loss in the semi-finals. I think everyone just feels sadness and huge disappointment.

“It was an enormous feeling that we scored and maybe we would go to extra time. And just over a minute later, it’s turned again. And that can happen,” he said.

Kosovare Asllani, Sweden captain said it was a very sad feeling to lose the semi-finals, adding that it was a huge disappointment.

“You’re empty, you’re disappointed, you’re just tired of tournament tears and being sad.

“I didn’t think we would experience that again, not in this tournament, given the feeling we’ve had and the tournament we’ve done. A big disappointment,” she said.

It’s true I’m cocky, Bovi admits to critics

Humor merchant Bovi Ugboma has agreed with the narrative that he is cocky.

According to the Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries, Cocky (adjective) means being too confident about yourself in a way that annoys other people.

Considered one of Nigeria’s notable comic figures, the stand-up act in an Instagram post engaged his audience on speculation they’ve heard about themselves that was untrue.

Setting the ball rolling, he revealed the way in which people have described him, stating they’ve dubbed him cocky.

Lacking the strength to barter words with individuals that have termed him that, Bovi accepted the claim, noting it was regrettably correct.

He wrote: “Is there a version of you that you heard from people that is not true? Mine is, I heard that I’m cocky. Sadly, it’s true. No power to argue!”

Veteran actress, Kate Henshaw in the comment section supported Bovi’s approach to critics about his personality, saying: “Na No dey cause a problem… Yes to whatever.”

30 years after son’s murder: Murtala Muhammed’s family calls for victims’ rights legislation

In remembrance of their son and brother, Zackari Muhammed, the family of the late former Head of state, General Murtala Muhammed, has expressed profound discontent with the prosecution of murder trials in Nigeria.

Twenty-seven-year-old Zackari Muhammed, a finance graduate of the University of Canterbury in Kent, met a tragic end in Abuja on August 13, 1993.  He was fatally shot.

Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode made the family’s position known at the 30th anniversary of Zakari Muhammed’s untimely death, held in Lagos at the weekend.

Muhammed-Oyebode lamented:  “Precisely three decades ago, the life of our cherished brother was cut short. Even though the perpetrators were positively identified, all efforts to prosecute the case failed during the preliminary investigation and arraignment phase.”

Recalling the distressing circumstances surrounding Zackari’s tragic demise, Muhammed-Oyebode criticised the case’s management, stating that, “the entire procedure was shrouded in confusion, and the ultimate conclusion was a glaring miscarriage of justice.

She suggested that “to put a stop to similar development in the future, a Legislation that protects the rights of victims, a law that reflects the spirit of our nation should be enacted for Nigerians.”

According to her, “The establishment of such a legal framework will guarantee comprehensive protection for victims throughout the complex corridors of the criminal justice system. As we observe this solemn anniversary, we beseech our federal legislators to champion the passage of laws based on the principles of victims’ rights.”

Muhammed-Oyebode emphasised that these legislative measures “will unequivocally secure the rights of victims across the spectrum of criminal cases. On a global scale, victims’ rights are recognised as an essential component of human rights.”

She noted that, “the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Basic Principles of Justice for victims of crimes and abuse of power as early as 1985. The time has arrived for Nigeria to adopt a victim-centric legal paradigm.”

Muhammed-Oyebode, highlighting the repercussions of ignoring such legislation, emphasised that “in the absence of this essential legal framework, unresolved crimes will continue to proliferate, fostering an environment conducive to unlawful killings and impunity.

“In cases where lives are unjustly taken, such as in murder cases, the rights of not only the immediate victim but also the secondary victims must be strengthened by providing them with the legal means to pursue justice and ensuring a fair trial,” she asserted.

Musk unserious about cage fight – Zuckerberg

The chief executive officer of Meta Platforms Inc., Mark Zuckerberg has said he’s ‘moving on’ from the much-talked cage fight with Tesla CEO, Elon Musk.

He accused Musk of being unserious about the bout, noting that prompted his decision to move on and ‘focus on people who take the sport seriously’.

Just a few days ago, via his X app, Musk updated the public on the match, stating it would take place at an ‘epic location’ in Italy after having concluded talks with the country’s Prime Minister and Minister of Culture.

Though he didn’t stipulate the date for the cage fight, he however, reiterated it would be live-streamed on X including Meta platforms; and veterans would receive the proceeds from it.

In a recent post via his newly introduced app, Threads, Zuckerberg admitted his readiness for the match but claimed despite having suggested August 26 for the showdown, Musk didn’t respond.

He added he had thus decided to move past it but noted the Space X boss knew how to reach whenever he got serious about the fight.

“I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on,” the Meta CEO wrote bluntly.

“I offered a real date. Dana White offered to make this a legit competition for charity. Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead.

“If Elon gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on.

The antagonism between the Tech giants grew in July to become public after Mario Nawfal, an X user, revealed Zuckerberg was preparing to launch a brand-new platform similar to the Musk’s.

A few weeks later, Meta launched Threads, a new text-based social media platform to rival former Twitter, now X, days after Musk announced a temporary limit had been imposed on the number of posts users can read daily on the microblogging app.

Musk’s X, responded by threatening to sue Meta for “the unlawful misappropriation” of its trade secrets.

He expressed his thoughts unabashedly about Zuckerberg and Meta’s new innovation then, proposed a cage battle in response to a second X user’s warning regarding Zuckerberg’s ju-jitsu skill.

  • Officials to miss weekend games after Wolves penalty error

Officials to miss weekend games after Wolves penalty error

Three Premier League officials at the centre of a decision not to award a penalty to Wolves at Manchester United have been overlooked for this weekend’s matches.

Wolves were denied a late penalty on Monday when United keeper Andre Onana crashed into Sasa Kalajdzic and failed to make contact with the ball.

United won 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil said elite referees manager Jon Moss told him he “could not believe” the error.

It is also understood referees’ chief Howard Webb, who is head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), contacted Wolves officials after the match to apologise.

Referee Simon Hooper, video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Salisbury and assistant VAR Richard West are regarded as “not selected” rather than “dropped” as the weekend appointments had not been made prior to Monday’s game.

However, the move is a direct result of the collective failure to award the injury-time penalty and is part of Webb’s demand for enhanced accountability for mistakes.

“Jon Moss said it was a blatant penalty and should have been given – fair play to him, he apologised,” said O’Neil after the match, which United won with Raphael Varane’s 76th-minute header.

“I have spent a lot of time with him today to understand the new guidelines, trying not to get myself booked in the first game, which I have failed in.

“But fair play to Jon for coming out and saying it was a clear and obvious error – he couldn’t believe the on-field referee didn’t give it and can’t believe VAR didn’t intervene.

“It probably made me feel worse, actually, because you know you are right. I feel worse about leaving with nothing. Live, I was told they didn’t think it was a clear and obvious error.”

Moss, who was appointed general manager of England’s elite referees within PGMOL in April, sought out O’Neil between his broadcast and written media obligations.

In April, Salisbury was stood down for a game after he did not intervene to award Brighton a penalty in a defeat at Tottenham while also acting as the VAR.

Former leading referee Webb spoke before the season began about his desire to drive up standards and reduce high-profile mistakes.
