The Western Security Network Agency codenamed Amotekun, in Ondo State has apprehended 28 suspected criminals for involving in various offences in the state in recent times.

The State Commander of Amotekun, Mr Adetunji Adeleye, while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Akure on Monday, said the suspects were arrested across the state in the last three weeks.

Adeleye said the offences ranging from kidnapping, rape, illegal possession of firearms, cultism, house breaking amongst others.

Giving the breakdown of the number of suspects, the state commander said 18 were arrested for kidnapping while 10 were arrested for illegal possession of firearms, cult activity and house breaking amongst others.

Adeleye, who is also the Special Adviser on Security Matters to Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, said: “The total number of 28 suspects we are parading today shows that we have more of kidnap suspects than any other criminal activities.

“This is in continuation of our efforts at ensuring that kidnapping in Ondo State becomes a thing of the past.’’

He noted that among the suspects were two minors (names withheld) aged 13 and 15 who kidnapped themselves in Oka-Akoko, demanding for N100,000 ransom from their parents and the traditional ruler of the community.

“Their parent raised alarm that their children were kidnapped and we swung into action but when they called for ransom we tracked the number and we were able to arrest them.

“We appreciate the Department of State Service (DSS) for assisting us in apprehending them.

“When they were negotiating, they even threatened the traditional ruler that if the ransom was not paid between two hours, they will kill the victims without knowing that they are the criminals perpetrating the act.

“Again, we have people who kidnapped themselves and raised alarm but upon our diligent investigation, we were able to unravel the mystery surrounding their disappearance to the extent that they confessed.

“We equally have kidnap suspects of some very high profile individuals in the society that we are working on.

“We have few cases of another possession of firearms, cult activity, house breaking but in all, as soon as we complete investigation, they will be charged to court while on light offences, we will explore the alternative of dispute resolution,” he said.

Adeleye also advised the public to be wary of commercial motorcycles and taxi they board in their daily outings.

“We equally want to advise the public to be wary of the new trend of criminal activities now. Most times, the victim will board motorcycle or taxi and you will see those blowing balloons.

“These balloons are already laced with poisonous gas that makes them to dose off and they become unconscious.

“So, they take the victim to wherever they want and do whatever they want and some of the victims that we were able to recover, most times loses their senses for two-three days.

“They will not remember where it happened not to talk of identifying the criminals. So, we want to advise the general public to be careful when they board Okada or taxi,” he said.

According to him, the corps and other sister security agencies have carried out several joint patrols to ensure that the state is rid of criminal activities.

“In the last three weeks, we’ve carried out several joint patrols between the military, Amotekun, the NSCDC and the Police

“I want to be specific in the area of Jugbere forest, where the joint patrol combed the entire forest from Ilale in Owo, coming out from Arimogija, Ute.

“We also combed the entire Ute forest to the boundary between Ondo and Edo and we now moved to Akoko where some of these kidnappers were arrested.

“I think it is a success story. Right now, the kidnappers are aware that the forestry reserves of Ondo State is not for them again,” Adeleye stated.

  • Agbonlahor urges Chelsea to sign Napoli’s Osimhen

Agbonlahor urges Chelsea to sign Napoli’s Osimhen

    • By, Ayodeji Peter

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Chelsea to go after the signing of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, claiming the 24-year-old will good be a good addition to the West London side.

The Blues have previously secured the signing of 22-year-old Ivorian striker Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal. But despite the signing of the 22-year-old striker, Agbonlahor still believes Chelsea need another forward.

Chelsea have been the busiest in this transfer window. They have recently overseen the departure of Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Ngolo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Ruben Loftus Cheek from the club, while the likes of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson have moved in the opposite direction.

However, Agbonlahor maintained that the London side still needs a player of Osimhen’s quality in their squad.

They still need a proper striker. I liked Romelu Lukaku when he was playing at Everton. Victor Osimhen would be good, but I think they are talking around £170m for him, which is too much. But I do feel that Chelsea needs more, as every team is improving.

“Villa will be there next season, so will Brighton, so it will be harder for Chelsea to break into the top four, and that’s the minimum for Chelsea with the amount they have spent, he told Football Insider.

Osimhen scored 26 goals in 32 appearances for Napoli last season to help them win their first league title in 33 years.

Seven things to know before you buy that second-hand vehicle

Acquiring second-hand vehicles is a common practice among Nigerians due to factors such as affordability and availability. However, it is crucial customers are aware of their rights and the legal framework surrounding the purchase of used vehicles. It is advisable to buy from reputable and licensed dealers or private sellers with a proven track record. This ensures compliance with regulations and reduces the risk of falling victim to fraud.

  • Seven key rights of tenants in Nigeria

Seven key rights of tenants in Nigeria

In Nigeria, tenant rights refer to the legal protections granted to individuals who rent housing. These rights ensure that tenants are treated fairly by their landlords and have safe living conditions. These rights aim to create a balance of power between landlords and tenants, ensuring that people have a secure and comfortable place to live. These rights include:

    1. Right to enjoy the property: As a tenant, you have the right to enjoy the property you’re renting and your privacy is protected. Section 37 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution states, “The privacy of citizens, their homes, correspondence, telephone conversations, and telegraphic communications is hereby guaranteed and protected.”

    2. Right to basic services and utilities: You have the right to basic services and utilities in the rented property. Section 16 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution guarantees that the state shall “provide adequate facilities for all citizens.” This includes access to essential services like water, electricity, and proper sanitation.

    3. Limitations on arbitrary rent increases: Your landlord cannot increase the rent arbitrarily. Section 17 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution establishes that every citizen is entitled to a fair and just rent. This means that any rent increase should be reasonable and cannot be imposed at any time during the tenancy without proper notice.

    4. Responsibility as a tenant: It is important to be a responsible tenant and respect the property rules set by your landlord. This includes taking care of the rented property, paying rent on time, and not engaging in any illegal activities within the premises. Failure to abide by these rules may result in eviction. Section 43 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution states, “No movable or immovable property or any interest in such property shall be compulsorily acquired except in the manner and for the purposes prescribed by a law that, among other things, provides for prompt payment of compensation.”

    5. Security deposit protection: As a tenant, you have the right to have your security deposit protected. Section 44 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution ensures that every Nigerian is entitled to the right to own, enjoy, and dispose of his or her property without interference. This means that your security deposit should be held in trust by the landlord or a designated third party and returned to you at the end of the tenancy, provided there are no damages or outstanding fees owed.

    6. Right to repairs and maintenance: You have the right to prompt repairs and maintenance of the rented property. It is the landlord’s responsibility to ensure that the property is kept in a habitable condition, free from any major defects or hazards. Section 34 of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution emphasizes the right to dignity of the human person, which includes living in a safe and sanitary environment. If there are any necessary repairs or maintenance issues, it is crucial to notify your landlord in writing so that they can address the problem in a timely manner.

    7. Lease agreement transparency: As a tenant, you have the right to a clear and transparent lease agreement. A lease agreement should outline the terms and conditions of the tenancy, including the duration, rent amount, payment terms, and any additional rules or provisions. It should also clearly state the rights and responsibilities of both the landlord and the tenant.Section 15(5)(d) states that the Nigerian state shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power. Lease agreement transparency can fall under the purview of addressing corrupt practices. Also, Section 16(2)(c) sets out the fundamental objectives of the Nigerian state, which include promoting transparency and accountability in public life. Lease agreements involving public or government-owned properties should adhere to these objectives. It is important to review the lease agreement carefully before signing and seek legal advice if needed.

By adhering to these rights and responsibilities, landlords and tenants can have a mutually respectful and harmonious living arrangement.

Alleged N5bn fraud: Court fixes July 21 for Sen. Stella Oduah’s arraignment

A Federal High Court, Abuja has fixed July 21 for arraignment of Sen. Stella Oduah and others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Inyang Ekwo fixed the date after EFCC’s counsel, Hassan Liman, SAN, prayed the court to allow the defendants to take their plea, having filed the charge against them since Dec. 17, 2020.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EFCC had sued Oduah alongside Gloria Odita, Nwosu Emmanuel Nnamdi and Chukwuma Irene Chinyere.

Others include Global Offshore and Marine Ltd, Tip Top Global Resources Ltd, Crystal Television Ltd, Sobora International Ltd and others.

The senator, who represented Anambra North Senatorial District at the 9th National Assembly, was scheduled to be arraigned on alleged N5 billion fraud and financial misappropriation while she served as Minister during the Jonathan Administration.

In the 25-count charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/316/2020, they are accused of conspiracy, money laundering and maintaining anonymous bank accounts with a commercial bank.

Upon resumed hearing, Liman said that on June 15, the court drew the attention of counsel to a letter or petition written to the chief justice of Nigeria against Justice Ekwo and the judge gave a directive to the EFCC to carry out an investigation with a view to unravel the identity of the persons.

He said the commission had carried out the investigation and was able to trace the identity of the person via the telephone number.

According to the lawyer, he is said to be one Mr Okolo Obinna Johnson, a promoter of two companies.

He said the effort was made through the search and linked BVN of the alleged person via the telephone number submitted and that the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) cooperated with the EFCC.

However, Liman said that the anti-graft agency made all efforts to track the physical person, in conjunction with other security agencies, but were yet to be successful.

“This is how far the commission has gone in carrying out the directive of the court,” he said.

He assured that the EFCC would not leave any stone unturned in bringing the culprit to book.

A Defence lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, said he would not be silent when the court was threatened.

“No one should threaten our judges. It is up to the work of the judges that this country continues to survive,” he said.

Ogwu James, SAN, said that the issue was not about the petition but the contact they made with the court.

He said though anybody had the right to write petition, sending a message to the court was the issue.

The EFCC’s lawyer then said that the commission had gotten the call log of the number through their investigation.

The judge, who wondered how the person got his phone number, said, “that character was sending messages to me, thereby, breaching my privacy.”

Justice Ekwo, who said that the order to arrest the person was still subsisting, said “the order was find him, bring him to court and let me deal with the matter.”

He said the order given to the deputy chief registrar, Litigation of the court to get the certified particulars of another organisation involved in the matter at CAC had been carried out.

He asked if there was anybody representing the organisation in the court but no one stood up.

The judge then said that the oragnisation’s letter, the phone number and their names would be given to the EFCC so as to arrest them and bring them to court.

He expressed displeasure in the manner the trial was allowed to degenerate, saying “the court is never without an option, but out of respect to you, I will not take those options.”

He said that the matter would be tried and tried to conclusion.

Justice Ekwo held that any defendants that is not in court anytime the matter is fixed for trial, would be ordered to be arrested and remanded in detention.

Liman, therefore, appealed that the defendants be ordered to take their plea, even as investigation continued with persons behind the letter and the text messages.

But all the defence lawyer disagreed, saying the matter was adjourned for report.

The judge consequentky adjourned the matter until July 21 for plea.
