We don’t want Lukaku, Juventus fans chant outside medical centre

Juventus fans have gathered outside the club’s medical centre to chant that they ‘don’t want’ Romelu Lukaku.

The Chelsea striker had been expected to rejoin Inter Milan after spending last season on loan at the San Siro, but Juve are now emerging as favourites to sign him.

Lukaku is said to have snubbed Simone Inzaghi’s side after being benched for the Champions League final last season.

The 30-year-old scored 14 goals across all competitions last season but could not match his stunning form from two years earlier that helped Inter to the Scudetto.

He was left out of the Blues’ pre-season tour and is likely to join Juve, but it seems he would not be a fan favourite in Turin.

A large group gathered behind a barrier to make their feelings on Lukaku clear, and there has also been opposition from Massimo Mauro, who won Serie A with Juve in 1986.

‘As I see it, Lukaku would not rekindle the joy of the Bianconeri faithful. On the contrary,’ he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

‘Lukaku seems to me more like a shot from Allegri than from Giuntoli. We’re talking about an experienced and reliable striker.

‘If he stays fit and lucky, he can score 35 goals a season. Otherwise, he can miss simple chances and become the scapegoat as happened in the Champions League final.

‘I may be old, but I wouldn’t take players like Lukaku who even publicly said that they would never wear the black and white shirt.

The Belgian striker does have an unsavoury history with the Juve fans, after 171 were banned for racially abusing him in April.

He was subjected to monkey chants from a section of supporters behind the goal after he converted a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Inter.

Video footage showed Juventus fans chanting ‘f***ing monkey’ and ‘f*** off’ at Lukaku, who was shown a second yellow card and sent off for shushing them during his celebrations – with the referee deciding his gesture was provocative.

Inter appealed Lukaku’s ban but it was originally upheld by Italy’s Sports Court of Appeal,  Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president, Gabriele Gravina, personally intervened and overturned the ban.

After the decision to overturn his ban, Lukaku said: ‘I believe that thanks to his intervention justice has been done and this sends out a great message to the whole world of sport and beyond. This has shown that the desire is there to fight racism.’

Court directs ABU, staff members to file terms of settlement

The National Industrial Court on Monday urged management of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and its 110 staff members to proceed to file their terms of settlement.

Justice Rakiya Haastrup gave the directive when the matter slated for report of settlement came up.

The staff members’ counsel, Mr Femi Adedeji informed the court that he proceeded to PTAD along with the defendant’s counsel, Dr. Abubakar Is’haq after the court sitting on June 6.

Adedeji in addition stated that he assured PTAD of his clients support for the release of the needed documents to ABU.

Is’haq on his part submitted that PTAD on June 14 scanned a memorandum of understanding for indemnity that will exonerate it from any issue that may arise as a result of releasing the claimants pension records to his client.

He added that PTAD will release the said documents after the MOU is signed.

Adedeji said that documents sought will enable the defendant to computate the claimants’ pension and gratuity benefits rid of discrepancies that is currently the bone of contention.

He further said that he was optimistic that before the next adjourned date, the parties will be able to meet and settle on the computations that will have been carried out by the defendant after getting the records from PTAD.

The court therefore adjourned the matter until Oct.23, after the court’s annual vacation,
    for report of settlement.

The court in addition urged parties to proceed to file their terms of settlement.

News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the defendant is seeking documents from PTAD that will correct discrepancies in the computations of the claimants’ pension and gratuity benefits.

The claimants appointments were terminated in 1996, however as part of the order of the court, the institution converted the termination letters to reinstatement or retirement letters as applicable to each staff.

The parties as part of terms of settlement have agreed on arrears of salary computations, but have failed to reach an agreement on the pension and gratuity computations.

  • Ale commends Tinubu’s declaration of emergency on food security

Ale commends Tinubu’s declaration of emergency on food security

The Co-founder of Global Initiative for Nigeria Development Engr. Michael Ale has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the declaration of state of emergency on food.

The water expert reminded the President that there is no sustainable and equitable food security without water fairness.

A statement by Ale, who is the National Coordinator of Courageous Nigerian Livelihood Program (CNL programme), stated the declaration of emergency on food security involves more than one ministry, saying good coordination is a concern.

While thanking Tinubu for thinking in that direction, Ale noted that it should no longer be business as usual in different ministries.

According to him: “Stakeholders invited and those not yet invited should be ready to play their role selflessly. State of emergency overrides other instructions and laid down principles, thus bypassing usual bureaucracy. But what can man do without water? The National Security council should invite the Water association for their contribution.”

The National President of AWDROP further stressed that irrigation alone using surface water cannot handle most of our peasant farmers’ needs, stating it’s not fair on farmers from other parts of the divide.

“Conjunctive use of both surface and groundwater is critical for sustainable food security and job creation. Engaging stakeholders in the water sector especially practitioners within the Master drillers group like AWDROP will safeguard the fund allotted for the project in food security,” he said.

He however said stakeholders need not to be left behind in providing affordable water for irrigation and livelihood of Nigerians.
