Niger Govt announces temporary closure of Minna-Bida Road

The Niger State government has said that the Minna-Bida Road would be temporarily closed for urgent rehabilitation of its failed sections.

Governor Umar Mohammed Bago said in a statement on Saturday that the road would be closed on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from noon until 6pm.

It is recalled that the recurring collapse of multiple cell culverts at chainage 62km from Minna has plagued the road for about 10 years.

This annual occurrence during the rainy season causes significant hardship for motorists, often leading to road closures lasting a week or more for emergency repairs.

The closure of the road, according to Bago, would address the annual culvert collapse and prevent further incidents during the rainy season.

He said that during the designated closure hours, skilled engineers would be diligently working to reinstate the failed section of the road.

The governor called for the understanding of the public to either await the completion of the repairs or utilize alternate routes to minimize disruption of the work on the road.

The alternative routes to be used include the Bida-Zungeru-Minna Road and the Bida-Lapai-Minna Road.

  • Sit at home killing businesses in Southeast, says Reps Deputy Speaker

Sit at home killing businesses in Southeast, says Reps Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has said that the sit-at-home observed every Monday in the Southeast was stifling economic growth and driving out investors from the area.

Kalu said about N4 trillion had been lost to the exercise enforced by gunmen believed to be loyal to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra in the last two years.

Speaking at a conference in Lagos, the Deputy Speaker said violence was alien to the region and called for collective efforts by all Igbo sons and daughters to end the menace.

He said the threat posed by the exercise had become the majority challenge to Igbo entrepreneurship and businesses

He said, “The existential threat to Igbo entrepreneurship and businesses now is the insecurity and sit-at-home problem in the south-east. The mutation of this problem is largely unfathomable. It is becoming a cankerworm that is eating deep into our collective fortunes as a people.

“We have to rise up to nip the problem in the bud. The first wave of the migration of Igbo businesses post-civil war was in the late 1980s and the 1990s, when, due to incessant kidnappings, thievery and a rise in occultism, Igbo businesses domiciled in Igboland moved en masse to other parts of Nigeria and the West and Central African region to thrive.

“We are currently witnessing the second wave of such migration of Igbos businesses, this time round, due to the insecurity and the sit-at-home problem in our beloved region. Ummunnem, this is not us.

“We are not known for these. If I do not tell you these truths as your son, then it will be difficult for anyone in governance from Ala-Igbo to tell you. I am pained by what our dear land has become. We have to be honest and sincere with ourselves. In conclusion, I make a heartfelt plea to each and every one of you.”

He reasoned that Ndigbo “cannot afford to retreat from our business endeavours. The stay-at-home order on Mondays has resulted in staggering losses of N4 trillion in the last two years in the Southeast alone, according to statistical data.

“This is also affecting the businesses of our brothers across Nigeria, especially in the supply chain. We must find lasting solutions to the security challenges in Igboland, addressing them collectively with innovative strategies. My brothers and my sisters. We must think and think again!”

While emphasizing that the Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of movement, Kalu urged Igbo people resident outside their region to live in peace with their host communities.

“While we strive for success and growth, we must also address the threats faced by Igbo businesses across Nigeria. I want to emphasize here that our constitutional rights protect us.

“Section 41 sub-section 1 of the 1999 Constitution guarantees every citizen of Nigeria the freedom to move, reside, and trade anywhere within the country. This constitutional backing supports our business endeavors, as long as we contribute positively to our host communities and maintain peaceful and friendly relationships.

“In this spirit, let us remember the longstanding harmonious relationship between the Yorubas and the Igbo, especially in Lagos and other parts of the Southwest. We have come a long way together, both economically and politically.

“We can draw inspiration from past collaborations, such as Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu’s role as the founding president of The Nigerian Stock Exchange in Lagos, and the partnership between Nnamdi Azikiwe and Sir Herbert Badmus Macaulay during the glory days of the then National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC)”.

The Deputy Speaker called for the revival of the Igbo apprenticeship system, a time-tested practice that he said had produced successful businessmen and women, stressing that it should not be allowed to go into extinction.

“I want to draw your attention to a remarkable aspect of our economic history—the “Igba-Boi” Apprenticeship System otherwise called the Igbo Apprenticeship System by business and economics experts worldwide. This time-honoured tradition has played a pivotal role in the growth of capital formation in Igboland, especially during the challenging post-civil war recovery period.

“It is a system that has been studied extensively by renowned institutions such as Harvard Business School, with business cases dedicated to showcasing its unique merits in top business schools worldwide.

“Today, it stands as a shining example of excellent venture capital in the world. However, let us pause for a moment and ask ourselves a rhetorical question: How many of us in this conference still have apprentices? Perhaps a few.

“As we reflect on this, we must acknowledge that the “Igba-Boi” apprenticeship system is going into extinction, but we must be innovative in our approach to revive and sustain it. We cannot afford to let this invaluable heritage fade away, for it carries the seeds of our future prosperity.

“This draws down to another important question we must ponder on – should we formalize the Igba-Boi Apprenticeship system? What I mean here is whether a national apprenticeship system should be set up that adopts the core element of the Igba-Boi apprenticeship system and combines it with the conventional education system in Nigeria to optimize the benefits for our teeming youth.

“This is why my office is open to you all umunnem! Please feel free to come and engage in this fruitful discourse as we look for the way forward to advance a core element of our rich economic and business practices and ensure that it is sustainable for future generations.”

Nigeria fulfils 2023 financial obligation to African Union

Nigeria has fulfilled its financial obligations to the African Union (AU) by making full payment of its assessed contributions for the year 2023.

The confirmation was made on Saturday by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Adamu Ibrahim Lamuwa, on the sidelines of the 43rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ambassador Lamuwa, in a statement issued by the State House Director of Information Abiodun Oladunjoye, explained that the payment demonstrated Nigeria’s commitment to its responsibilities as an AU member-state.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for living up to expectations, not only as the Chairperson of ECOWAS, but also as a President who emphasizes prompt payment of financial assessments.

During the Executive Council meeting, the Permanent Secretary shared Nigeria’s stance on the proposed 2024 Budget of the AU.

He welcomed the consideration of the economic outlook of African countries and the execution rate of AU departments and organs, over the past three years, in the budget drafting process.

‘‘Nigeria emphasized the importance of an austerity-driven, results-oriented budget that avoids duplication.

‘‘Accountability and prudent resource management were also highlighted to encourage other member countries to fulfill their financial obligations,’’ he said.

The Permanent Secretary called for synergy and complementarity among AU organs and departments and requested that the AU Commission (AUC) reduce travel costs by hosting more meetings at its headquarters in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.

He also stressed the need for compliance with internal audit processes to ensure transparency and accountability.

President Tinubu is scheduled to attend the 5th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting on Sunday in Nairobi, where discussions on other significant matters will take place.

Ambassador Lamuwa also highlighted that the ministerial-level meeting preceding the Heads of State’s participation adopted the theme of Education for the AU in 2024.

He noted that this aligns well with President Tinubu’s focus on education as a priority area domestically, making his leadership in Nigeria and ECOWAS timely and beneficial.

Nigeria is one of the major financial contributors to the African Union (AU), alongside four other member-states.

The AU’s 2023 budget of $654.8 million is primarily financed through annual statutory contributions and voluntary contributions from development partners, as well as other miscellaneous income.

Development partners play a crucial role in supporting the AU’s budget, covering at least 67% of the total amount while Member-states, including Nigeria, contribute to the remaining balance of the budget based on the approved scale of assessment by the Executive Council.

Segun Arinze loses Azibaola Robert’s $100 ‘Hit the nail’ challenge

Legendary Nollywood actor Segun Arinze had a tough challenge when he visited his friend Azibaola Robert at one of his sites, as he put the movie star to a ‘hit the nail challenge’ to test his craftsmanship.

Footage from a trending video shows the moment Arinze walked into his long-time friend’s construction site where they exchanged banter and warm embrace.

Azibaola, who was in the heat of the construction, challenged the actor to nail down a 3-inch nail in four strikes, staking a reward of $100 for Segun should he hit the nail completely down.

As expected, Arinze welcomed the challenge, putting his carpentry skills to the test.

Stakeholders back Tinubu’s reforms, rally Nigerians’ support

    • By, Taofeek Babalola

Some members of the All Progressive Peoples Congress (APC) have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the reforms he is implementing to reposition the country.

At a press conference in Lagos, they said the president’s decisions on security, education, economy and tax reforms are signs of good things to come for Nigerians.

Prince Hammed Olanrewaju Mohammed, a former Financial Secretary of Lagos APC, urged Nigerians from all over the country to join hands with the present government in their efforts to take the country back to its lost glory.

“President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hit the ground running and the process has been perfect. I am very hopeful that there is going to be a good administration under him. Nigerians should join hands with the present government at the top and support President Tinubu’s efforts to reposition the country.

“We are in a critical situation now and the only way out of our present predicament is to support the present government to take us back to our lost glory,” Mohammed said.

Similarly, President of the Lagos Hoteliers Association, Oluomo Jamiu Talabi, said Tinubu had taken some steps that can lead to the betterment of Nigerians.

Talabi hailed the President for signing four Executive Orders deferring and suspending the commencement of certain taxes paid by individuals and companies, which according to him, will reduce the tax burden on Nigerians and their businesses.

“We commend President Tinubu on the tax reforms. Before now, the taxes were enormous. It is killing and discouraging businesses. So with these tax reforms and the Committee set up by the President, we hope and pray that they will do away with unnecessary taxes and bring them down to a good minimum

“There is no doubt that the steps taken will have a positive impact on the economy. We can’t judge him now but we can only give kudos for what he has done,” Talabi said.

Frank Isiekwene, a Councillor representing Ward D at Lagos Mainland Local Government, thanked President Tinubu for signing the students’ loan bill to law, which he said will allow more Nigerian youths to be educated.

“With the signing of the students’ loan bill to law, it means President Tinubu is interested in the progress of Nigerian youths. He wants every youth to be educated. Also, a few months into this administration, President Tinubu has shown that he is for all irrespective of tribe or religion. All his appointments have been on merit and I believe everybody will benefit from this government through,” Isiekwene said.

Naira sustains recovery at N746/$ in official market

The naira on Thursday recorded a massive gain of N36 to close at N746/$ in the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window– official market.

Thursday’s rebound showed two-day straight gain in the official market over improved liquidity and transaction activities.

The local currency had closed at N782/$ on Wednesday and N788/$ on Tuesday.

Data from FMDQ Exchange indicated gradual rise in market liquidity from over $63 million turnover on Tuesday to $90 million on Wednesday, contributed largely to Thursday’s rate recovery. Thursday’s turnover data was not ready by the time of filling this report.

The naira had on Monday closed at N744/$ at the I&E window, made a N44/$ loss on Tuesday and a sudden rebound on Wednesday and Thursday.

However, the parallel market was where the naira faced sustained pressure, with the local currency closing at N803/$ on Thursday. This created of N57/$ premium between the official and parallel market rates.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) unified all exchange rates into the I&E window and allowed market forces to determine exchange rate for the naira.

Data from FMDQ Exchange showed gradual drop in market liquidity from over $260 million turnover to less than $70 million in recent weeks.

The I&E window was activated in June 2017, and represents the broader forex market, where dollars sourced from autonomous sources are traded between Authorised Dealers, Clients and the CBN.

This forex window is also the underlying market for the FMDQ Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing (NAFEX) benchmark.

The rate at the I&E window has come to represent the official rate for the naira after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) abolished multiple exchange rates in the economy.

The unification of multiple exchange rates into the I&E window has been described by stakeholders as a game changer in the apex bank’s plan to achieve exchange rate stability.

The policy, which allowed forex dealers and investors to buy and sell dollars at exchange rate of their choice provided they can find buyers. This move aims to ensure that the naira is allowed to trade at the market-clearing rate in the forex market.

President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) Dr. Aminu Gwadabe spoke on the need to continuously raise dollar liquidity to sustain naira recovery at both official and parallel markets.

He called on the CBN to ensure liquidity in the retail end of the market by de-monopolizing diaspora remittances and stronger collaboration with BDCs which control the retail end of the forex market.

CEO of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, said the CBN’s decision to float the naira is a clear step in the right direction for our economy, ensuring investor confidence continues to grow.

“The decision is good for business, jobs and growth. It will help Nigeria’s brilliant entrepreneurs to do business globally and attract foreign investment. It will also help reduce inflation, leaving more money in people’s pockets,” he said.
