Experts tackle brain drain through mentoring of young doctors

The Dr. Abayomi Ajayi Physicians Mentorship Programme has begun a six-month mentorship programme (Cohort 3) for 14 doctors across the country, aimed at, among others, tackling brain drain.

The training, which runs extensively for six months, hopes to enhance their personal and professional performances in four key areas including “Leadership using Emotional Intelligence”, “Planning”, “Self-discovery”, and “Decision Making”.

The Cohort 3 comprises 14 mentees aged between 25 and 35. According to the organisers, a team of 15 highly resourceful minds and top professionals were brought on board as mentors for this year’s training.

Speaking in a virtual meeting with mentors and mentees to herald the programme, Managing Director of Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi said the programme was set toward enhancing the career growth of young physicians and improving transformational leadership in the medical profession.

Ajayi said “The mentoring programme will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 by promoting the development, training and retention of health workers in Nigeria.

“We want young professionals to understand that there is a future here in this country. Despite our challenges, Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, has many comparative advantages. I am not saying doctors cannot travel abroad to acquire more skills, but after acquiring the skills, we want them to come back to Nigeria.

“Our delivery approach is truly inclusive; action-based, universal design learning, which immediately converts knowledge to profitable action. The thematic focus of the mentoring programme is drawn from the visionary directives of imparting leadership skills, developing excellence in character, inspiring the sense of responsibility, building capacity in the mentees”, he said.

It gives them the opportunity to develop an on-going relationship by meeting regularly and discussing matters relating to career development and advancement within an organised and supportive framework.

“The achievement made at previous editions of the training is remarkable. They have successful churned out courageous and determined physicians doing remarkably well in the profession”, he added.

  • Stand firm against military coups, Tinubu tells UN

Stand firm against military coups, Tinubu tells UN

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday charged the United Nations (UN) to firm up its position against unconstitutional power takeovers and coup d’etat, lamenting the prevalence of the unconstitutionality in West Africa.

President Tinubu, who made the call in Nairobi, Kenya, also called on African leaders to respect democracy, the rule of law, ensure political stability and disincentivize coup d’etat on the continent.

In his statement at a high-level event organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the margins of Fifth Mid-Year African Union (AU) Coordination Meeting, the President urged African military institutions and states to recognize and respect the need for democratic renewal.

The Nigerian leader, who is also the Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, said coups d’état should be discouraged on the continent, especially in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, insecurity, and climate change.

The President, in his statement presented by Ambassador Adamu Ibrahim Lamuwa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said it was regrettable that West Africa, despite its numerous instruments and mechanisms for promoting democracy and good governance, is leading other regions in the use of unconstitutional means to change governments.

According to a press release issued by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, the President warned that the ugly trend of the military straying into the political arena is causing threats to peace, security and stability, and engendering poverty, displacement, and humanitarian crises.

”This ugly trend has only succeeded in threatening the peace, security and stability of the sub-region and by extension the African continent, leaving in its trail poverty, internally-displaced persons and humanitarian crisis. In the same vein, this ugly trend has also led to food shortages and escalated health challenges.

”We therefore must take deliberate steps to address the root causes of unconstitutional changes and coups d’état in Africa. As a continent, we cannot make progress toward achieving the goals and targets of the UN Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, as well as those of AU Agenda 2063 for the ‘Africa We Want’.

”Between 2020 and now, Africa has witnessed six successful coups d’état and three unsuccessful attempts. This rise in military takeovers and unconstitutional changes in government disrupts our democratic processes and undermines stability on the continent.

”It is for this reason that I call on all African leaders at all levels to make concerted efforts in respecting the tenets of democracy and the rule of law, in order to ensure political stability on the continent,” Tinubu said.

Reiterating that Africa has no intention of regressing on its democratic gains and credentials, as well as its maturing democratic political culture, President Tinubu said ”I call on all Afro-centric supranational organisations, especially the African Union, the various Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms, to individually and collectively adopt Protocols on democracy and good governance, and ensure their effective implementation.”

While acknowledging that democracy may present challenges in terms of management and dynamics, President Tinubu reiterated that it is the best form of government for 21st-century Africa.

Drawing a comparison between military rule and democratic regimes, he noted that democracy ensures good governance, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability.

Emphasizing the need to disincentivize coups d’état, the ECOWAS Chairperson urged the United Nations to take a firm stance against military coups.

”It is my view that while grappling with the challenges caused by the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other geostrategic tragedies, including insecurity and climate change, amongst others, African leaders must disincentivize coups d’état.

”The United Nations must also stand firm and unyielding in its opposition to military coups,” he said.

He also acknowledged that democracy and development are interconnected in achieving sustainable goals and the African vision, adding that commitment to democratic principles and governance is crucial for long-term peace, security, and economic growth.

As Chairperson of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President expressed his readiness to work with the UNDP and other development partners to advance the course of democracy on the African continent.

”The issue of military coups and the need for democratic renewal in Africa is one that I am passionate about and indeed committed, along with my colleagues, to confront and we are prepared to change the narratives,” he said.

He commended the UNDP for launching its flagship report “Soldiers and Citizens: Military Coups and the Need for Democratic Renewal in Africa,” stating that the military has no place in the governance of the 21st Century Africa.

Jide Okeke, UNDP Regional Programme Coordinator (Africa), said his organization invited the Nigerian leader after his inspiring message, denouncing military coups, during his inauguration as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on July 9.

  • Appoint FCT Indigene as Minister, Reps tell Tinubu

Appoint FCT Indigene as Minister, Reps tell Tinubu

The House of Representatives has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider an Indigene of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for Appointment as a Minister of the Federal Republic when appointing his cabinet in line with constitutional provisions.

There has been wide agitation by the indigenous people of the FCT for a fair representation in the Federal Executive Council with the appointment of an indigene as Minister.

While there has always been a Minister for the FCT, no indigene of the Territory has ever been appointed into the Federal cabinet as Minister.

Adopting a resolution on a motion sponsored by Hon. Abdulrahman Ajiya and Hon. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi, the House asked the President to comply with the judgment of the Court of Appeal on the ministerial slot for FCT indigenes in the Federal Executive Council.

The House also resolved to set up Ad–hoc Committee to investigate the rationale behind the exclusion of FCT indigenes from ministerial nominees by successive governments despite the ruling of the Court of Appeal on this matter.

Moving the motion, Ajiya said that the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) guarantees equal treatment and rights to all citizens of Nigeria.

He said the judgment by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on 15 January 2018, was in the case instituted by HRH Musa Baba Panya against the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that court affirmed that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is entitled to a ministerial slot in the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He said the combined effect of Section 147(1) (3), 14(3) and 299 of the 1999 Constitution, that indigenes of the FCT-Abuja are entitled to Ministerial appointment into the Federal Executive Council.

He said the Hon. Minister of the FCT is appointed by the President under the aforementioned section of the constitution to represent the interests and aspirations of the residents of the FCT in the Federal Government.

Ajiya said despite the clear provisions of the Constitution and the court judgment, indigenes of FCT have not been represented in the FEC, causing alienation, marginalization, and underrepresentation.

He said that the equitable representation of all regions, communities and groups in government are necessary for national cohesion, stability and development.

Osoba at 84: Your life worthy of emulation, says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday celebrated former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba on his 84th birthday, saying his life was worthy of emulation.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, President Tinubu also noted that Chief Osoba’s life was replete with remarkable achievements.

Osoba, a prominent progressive politician who served twice as governor of Ogun State first from 1992 to 1993 during the aborted Third Republic and then from 1999 to 2003, clocked 84 on Saturday.

President Tinubu prayed for more years for the former governor so that he and many others could continue to benefit from his immense wisdom and experience.

He said: “Today, I rejoice with the family, friends and numerous associates of a prominent journalist, former governor of Ogun State and elder statesman, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, on attaining 84.

“Chief Osoba’s life is dotted with excellent achievements. A pioneer journalist who started his career in 1964 working with the Daily Times of Nigeria as a trainee reporter and rose to the pinnacle as the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief.

“A pro-democracy activist who fought stridently for democracy and progressive good governance in Nigeria. It’s no surprise that his people elected him twice as governor of Ogun State and he remains today one of the leaders of our governing All Progressives Congress.

  • Google expands Bard AI to 40 more languages, 59 countries

Google expands Bard AI to 40 more languages, 59 countries

Tech giant, Google has announced the expansion of Bard, its conversational AI service, to 40 new languages including Swahili- the first African language to be included and 59 new countries and territories.

The expansion includes new features that allow users to better customise their experience, boost their creativity, and get more done.

With the expansion, Bard is now available in most of the world, including countries, and in the most widely spoken languages, including Swahili, Chinese, German, Spanish, Arabic, and Hindi, and Spanish.

Users can now access Bard in their preferred language with text-to-speech also enabled in 8 languages.

Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications and Public Affairs, SSA, at Google said: “We’re excited that this is Bard’s largest expansion to date – we see its global availability as a great democratizer of knowledge.

“That’s why we created Bard: to help you explore that curiosity, augment your imagination and ultimately get your ideas off the ground — not just by answering your questions, but by helping you build on them.”

As part of the expansion, new updates have been introduced to make the Bard experience more interactive and user-friendly. The ‘Listen to Responses’ feature now provides an auditory dimension to Bard’s responses, making it particularly useful for gaining accurate pronunciation or understanding a script, with just a simple click on the sound icon.

Users can also now adjust Bard’s responses by changing the tone and style of its responses to five different options: simple, long, short, professional or casual, offering a tailored interaction to match individual needs. While this feature has been initially launched in English, plans are underway to extend it to other languages, broadening its accessibility to users around the globe.

Four additional features were also introduced to help users get more done. Users can now pin and rename their conversations with Bard, making it easier to revisit conversations that contain important information or ideas later. Through the export code to more places feature, users can now export Python code to Replit, in addition to Google Colab, making it easier for users to share their code with others or use it in other projects. Users will also be able to share responses with friends using shareable links, making it easier to collaborate on projects or get feedback on ideas. Also launched is the feature allowing users to upload images with prompts to Bard.

Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of Google’s large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide responses. As an experimental technology, Bard may occasionally make inaccurate statements in response to user prompts. So if a response from Bard is inaccurate or unsafe, if one experiences an issue, or just wants to provide feedback, there’s an easy way to do that.
