Naija Super 8: Katsina United, Sporting Lagos hold Enyimba, Remo Stars

Newly promoted Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) sides, Sporting Lagos and Katsina United held the reigning champions, Enyimba International FC and league runner-up, Remo Stars FC to draws in their Naija Super 8 group A encounters, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, yesterday .

The first game between Remo Stars and Katsina United ended in a 1-1 draw. The close contest produced two first half goals, which proved decisive.

Remo Stars took the lead through Fabian Iworie in the 21st  minute but  Katsina United responded with an equaliser five minutes later through  Somson Olasupo who beat the offside trap to tap home his own rebound shot.

The two teams cancelled each other out in the second half, with chances few and far between

Reacting to the result, Remo Stars coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, said his team played a side who had a point to prove. “Katsina United are no underdogs in this match. This is a team that just got promoted to the NPFL. They had a point to prove. They wanted to show that their promotion is not a fluke and they did the job well.”

The second game between Enyimba International and Sporting Lagos ended in goalless draw.

The two sides went close to breaking the deadlock in the first half, but lacked the clinical ability to finish chances they created.

In the second half, after dominating for a large period of the game, Sporting Lagos were awarded a penalty, but Enyimba’s goalkeeper, Noble John, stepped up to the occasion and  saved Zulkifiliu Rabiu weak attempt at a match winner. His heroic save earned him the Hero of The Match prize.

Reacting to the result, Sporting Lagos coach commended his players for securing a draw against the champions. “Enyimba is the best team in Nigeria, they are the current champions, I am happy with the performance of the players, unfortunately we could not convert our chances. I am impressed to see that we can come off promotion games to draw the champions of the Premier League.”

Nwoye, who took responsibility for assigning penalty duties to new recruit, Zulkifiliu Rabiu, said he has no regret for making the decision.  “I don’t regret my decision, Rabiu is a goal scorer and big players all across the world miss penalties. So I have no regret,” he stated.

Though the result dims Enyimba’s qualification chances, coach Finidi George remains upbeat about his team’s ability to make the semi-finals. “I see us going all the way, we still have one more match to play and the group may still be decided on goal difference, it is not over yet. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances today. We always play to win, it is football, sometime you don’t win, but we will find a way to win our last game.”

Meanwhile, Flykite Productions, Naija Super 8 organisers, have announced free entry for fans into the regular sections of the Mobolaji Johnson Arena venue of the competition, for games slated for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • South African challenges Adesanya for UFC African ‘king’

South African challenges Adesanya for UFC African ‘king’

Nigeria-born Mixed Martial Arts sensation Israel Adesanya’s next challenger would likely be Dricus Du Plessis who sparked a rivalry by claiming to be the only authentic African fighter in the United Fighting Championship (UFC)

The UFC middleweight champion was involved in a heated face-off with the South African at UFC 290 after Du Plessis picked up the biggest win of his career when he defeated former UFC champion Robert Whittaker early yesterday morning. After some back-and-forth early exchanges, Du Plessis knocked out the former titleholder to earn himself the next likely middleweight title shot.

The South African has set himself up for a showdown with Adesanya in the coming months. He and Adesanya have gone back and forth in interviews and social media this year after comments Du Plessis made about wanting to become Africa’s first UFC champion.

Du Plessis boasted he would beat Adesanya the next time they meet again in the Octagon.

“I will knock him out just like I did tonight(Saturday),” Du Plessis said.

“If not, we saw his fight with Alex Pereira, if I get him to the floor, I will manhandle him in there. I have done it before and I will do it again.”

Recall Du Plessis had sparked the recent rivalry when he claimed by saying Cameroon-born Francis Ngannou and the Nigerian duo of Kamaru Usman and Adesanya were not true African champions because they lived and trained outside the African continent.

He said in an earlier interview: “I am the African fighter in the UFC. Breathe African air. Wake up in Africa every day. Train in Africa, African born, African raised, still reside in Africa.”

Air Peace set to honour 1980 Green Eagles, 1976 Olympians

Leading  Nigeria’s airlines, Air Peace, in conjunction with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) will on July 28 unveil a Wall of Fame in honour of ex-athletes who sacrificed for Nigeria on many fronts in the past.

The Wall of Fame is being organized in honour of the athletes who travelled to Olympic Games in 1976 in Montreal, Canada and were ordered  home at the eve of the games after Nigeria led a boycott  of the games  by African countries  due to the  Apartheid policy  in South Africa at the time.

The occasion  will also be used to honour  the  historic 1980 Africa Nations Cup- winning team.

The CEO of Air Peace,  Chief Allen Onyema, said it was sad that the country failed to give honour to deserving athletes who laboured so hard to put the country’s name on global space with their performances in their respective fields, adding the case of the 1976 Olympics athletes was pathetic since  the athletes were already at the games before  their dreams were cut short due to the boycott.

According to  Onyema ,  the   living former  athletes  and players  to be honoured , will  be  named  Air Peace ambassadors  and will enjoy  the airline’s free  12 domestic  return flights 12  annually  as  well as one international flight to any  of the airline’s foreign destinations  until they die plus a  special cash reward  to be revealed on July 28.

He added:  “We are talking about Nigerians who in their prime had everything going for them and would have been able to use the Olympics of 1976 as a stepping stone to achieve the kind of life they would wanted for themselves and their families. They  arrived the games and the nation beckoned on them and they jettisoned their opportunities. They came back home because of the cause the government was pursuing at that time. Some of them died in penury and those that are alive, nobody knows them.

“How about those who won the African Cup of Nations the first time for our country in 1980. Such national heroes, no country forgets them. What they did brought the country together.”

A member of the 1976 Olympics team, Chief Segun Odegbami, who is part of the project and a recipient expressed joy and thanked Air Peace for the honour bestowed on best athletes.

“About half of the  Montreal  1976 Olympics team members are dead while six of the 1980 team are also dead,” Odegbami said.  “The Olympics experience was a trauma but those of us still alive give thanks.”

  • More German clubs queue for Onuachu

More German clubs queue for Onuachu

German Bundesliga sides VfB Stuttgart and Augsburg are keenly interested in Southampton’s forward Paul Onuachu.

This was revealed by Sky Deutschland’s transfer market expert, Florian Plettenberg who has reported that both Bundesliga outfits have held talks with the Super Eagles forward.

According to Plettenberg, Onuachu is demanding a huge salary which is said to be 1.5 million euros per year, a figure considered too much for Augsburg.

The Bavaria-based side of scored 42 goals last season which is one of the fewest in the Bundesliga and escaped relegation by the whiskers which explains their interest in the former Genk forward.

For VfB Stuttgart, Onuachu is considered as a replacement for Serhou Guirassy who finished as their top scorer last season and has been linked with an exit from the club

Onuachu failed to find the back of the net in the eleven appearances he made for Southampton last season in the Premier League but seems not to be short of suitors as he had earlier proven his efficiency in front of goal in the Jupiler Pro League.

The former Jupiler Pro League top scorer has also been linked with two other German teams Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke 04.

  • Ndidi won’t quit Leicester for Celtic

Ndidi won’t quit Leicester for Celtic

There are strong indications that Wilfred Ndidi will remain with Leicester City in the English Championships in a bid to rediscover his form.

There have been speculations over the possible exit of the Nigerian after the former EPL champions were relegated to the Championships last season.

Ndidi, who has been a key player for Leicester since his arrival in 2017 from Genk of Belgium, is considered one of the experienced players in Leicester with  speculations rife over his possible transfer to Scottish champions Celtic now being managed by  his former coach at Leicester City, Brendan Rodgers.

But a close associate of the Nigerian confirmed to NationSport yesterday that Ndidi would remain with the Foxes as he declared his possible link to Celtic a ruse.

“I think Ndidi will play with Leicester in the Championships because he has not gotten any offer for now,” a close confidant of the Super Eagles defender who pleaded anonymity, told NationSport. “For now, he is playing with Leicester City.

“I don’t think he will join Celtic because I don’t think the Scottish club can afford his wages.  I can confirm  he will play in the English Championships which is also a bit tougher like the Premiership,” the source added.

In a related development, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, said Celtic are not interested in signing Ndidi, adding he would be surprised if this transfer materialised.

He told GiveMeSport:“I don’t believe Ndidi is a player Celtic are looking to sign in this window, certainly not one of the top targets or even middle-range targets at all.”

He further suggested that if Rodgers were to bring in anyone from Leicester, it would likely be a player from the younger teams or someone who has shown potential in the younger age groups and is breaking into the first team.

While Ndidi’s defensive prowess is undeniable, it seems that a move to the Scottish Premiership is not on the cards.

  • Common grammatical anomalies in English idioms/ sayings

Common grammatical anomalies in English idioms/ sayings

    • By, Uka Nwafor

Language, as I’ve always said, is quite a peculiar phenomenon to every people. And this peculiarity reflects in the modality of thoughts and perceptions into which the language moulds and weaves the people.

Idioms/sayings, being the business at hand, are particulars with which every language community and their thoughts, and perceptions, of the world around them are identified. Such that any alteration in the use of these particulars—the idioms—has automatically marred the intended meaning as it is the language.

Therefore, the effort towards mastery of these expressions should be everyone’s priority, especially in our modern-day society when the English language is gradually becoming the language of power.

Let’s consider some of these idiomatic anomalies as commonly misused by the supposedly advanced users of the English language:

    ·       On a platter of gold: as in, ‘the man got the job on a platter of gold’. The intended meaning of this idiom is that he got the job easily, or without effort. But the fact remains that the language community, it might perhaps be argued, never uses “gold” to express “luck or being fortunate for something”. “Silver” is the right word the community uses for this. Therefore, the correct idiom for this is: on a silver platter. Hence, ‘the boy got the job on a silver platter’ is perfectly correct. It’s worth noting that ‘silver’ is always used to express luck in the English language. For instance, (a) Every cloud has a silver lining. Meaning that every negative or bad situation has a positive side (b) Some people are born with silver spoon in their mouths’. This means that some people are born into wealthy families. (c) To cross someone’s palm with silver’. Meaning that someone is offered some money as a gift, or for work done. For instance, the Chairman has crossed the performers’ palms with silver’. Though the idiom could also somewhat mean ‘to offer someone a bribe’. (d) To have a silver tongue: this idiom means ‘having an oratory skill, or having the gift of eloquence. For example, ‘he might not be a good writer but his silver tongue can win him over a great deal of supporters’.

    ·       To sell the family silver: ‘The boy sold the family silver at a slight experience of financial difficulty’. This means that the boy, without proper consideration, sold a very valuable resource for a quick and immediate gain, rather than holding or reserving it for future use.

    ·       An idle mind is the devil’s workshop: This idiom is so common that almost everyone with slight knowledge of English knows it, and on the queue of its misuse. At other time, many learners of English are subverted in the company of lower and unexposed learners. In most cases, subverted by lower background learner-parents during upbringing. The correct version is: ‘the devil makes work for idle hands’. It means that anyone who does not engage himself in activity that keeps him busy may likely be tempted to commit crime’.

    ·       He who laughs last laughs best: What marred this idiom is the word ‘best’ because it fails to grasp the thought it’s meant to convey or project in the language. The correct version: ‘he who laughs last laughs longest’. And it means that those who are successful today should not be too proud as others may one day become more successful.

    ·       Scale through: As in, the boy scaled through in his travel plans. This is another idiom that is un-English. It usually prickles the ears hearing this from advanced users of English. The correct one should be “sail through’’, as in, ‘the boy sailed through his travel plans’. You would also notice that the second use doesn’t contain any preposition as in the first. Another idiom people might be mistaking this for is ‘scrape through’ which means to be narrowly successful in something. For example, ‘The boy managed to scrape through the exam last week.”

    ·       Send forth party: This usually sounds so absurd hearing it from supposedly good users. First, the phrase ‘send forth’ is not a noun but a verb phrase. So, how then can it suffice for an event of ceremony as has been mistaken by many.  Therefore, ‘send forth’ is a verb phrase and it means ‘to send someone from one place to another, usually without ceremony’.  Unlike ‘send-off’ which is a noun, though when not hyphenated could also be a ‘verb phrase’. Many mistake ‘send forth’ for this. It ought not to be so. Because ‘send-off’ is a noun and it means ‘a ceremony’ organised to bid farewell to a person or group of persons. And it’s worth noting that it’s not used with ‘party’ since the phrase itself already implies ‘a ceremony’. In another sense, ‘send off’, usually without a hyphen, could be a verb which mean ‘to send someone out or away due to rules breached or crime committed.

    ·       Birds of the same feather flock together: This idiom is often hampered with the modifier ‘same’. It shouldn’t be so. The correct one: ‘Birds of a feather flock together’. And it means ‘people of like mind or character often easily flow and do things together’.

    ·       The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know: I usually feel pissed off hearing this from the supposedly advanced speakers who, most times, insist on its use even when corrected.  I understand the enormity of mother-tongue influence in the second language learning but the efforts towards mastery usually yield encouraging results. Most times, our ideas could be great and splendid, but if the tool, which is the language, with which we convey them is shaky, then our acceptance may be endangered. So, the correct form of this idiom is, ‘The devil you know is better than that you don’t’. These idioms may sound strange to many since they seem to contradict their knowledge of them, the way they were taught or probably grew up knowing.

    ·       Worse comes to worse: The problem with this idiom is that many users hardly know which form of the adjective is the word “worse”; whether comparative or superlative. Whereas some care less. Whatever the correct form is none of their businesses. But it might interest you to know that the beauty of language lies in the capacity of usage. So the correct form of the idiom is “if the worst comes to the worst.” Though American English may do away with the definite articles ‘the’ in both clauses.

It might interest you to know that many individuals have hewn honours and respects, hit it hard and huge in life through the proficient use of language. Most especially English language.

So, strive your hardest to master it as it’s become not only a global language but the language of power.

I paused here with head bowed for the language enthusiasts.
