    Kano Fire Service saves 26 lives, N17m property in one month

    The Kano State Fire Service said it saved  26 lives and property worth N17 million from 22 fire outbreaks recorded in June.

    This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Service, Saminu Abdullahi, on Tuesday in Kano.

    Abdullahi disclosed that nine persons died, while property worth N6.7 million were destroyed by fire during the period.

    “The Service responded to 18 rescue calls and four false alarms from residents of the state,” he said.

    The spokesman advised general public to handle fire with care and continue to clear their drainage to avoid unforeseen circumstances.

    Bays Planet foundation launches campaign for sustainable menstrual health

    A Non Governmental Organisation, Bays Planet Foundation, has launched EmpowerHer campaign, a groundbreaking project aimed at addressing the critical issue of affordable menstrual hygiene products and policy reform in Nigeria. 

    “This national campaign seeks to empower women and girls by advocating accessible and affordable sanitary pads while promoting sustainable menstrual health practices and policy changes,” Founder and Executive Director Bays Planet Foundation Baliqees Salaudeen-Ibrahim announced in a statement over the weekend. 

    She added: “Menstrual hygiene management is a crucial aspect of every woman’s well-being, yet the rising prices of sanitary pads pose significant challenges to accessibility and affordability in Nigeria.”

    Salaudeen-Ibrahim explained that EmpowerHer campaign is to ensure that all women and girls have access to hygienic menstrual products without compromising their financial security or health.

    “The EmpowerHer project highlights the commitment of the Bays Planet Foundation to address menstrual hygiene and climate change simultaneously. By advocating affordable sanitary pads and sustainable alternatives, the project aims to reduce the environmental impact of disposable pads while empowering women and girls,” she said.

    “The project will employ a multifaceted approach to tackle the challenges faced by women and girls in Nigeria through advocacy and policy reform: public awareness and education; sustainable solutions and takeholder engagement. 

    “EmpowerHer will work closely with policymakers and relevant stakeholders to advocate for comprehensive policies and regulations that address the pricing, quality, and availability of sanitary pads. By bridging the policy gaps, the project aims to ensure affordable and accessible menstrual products for all.”

    She noted the campaign would foster collaboration among pad producers, retailers, policymakers, NGOs and women’s groups to explore innovative approaches that reduce costs, improve accessibility, and ensure the availability of affordable and quality menstrual products.

    The foundation urged potential partners, stakeholders and concerned individuals to join hands in supporting the EmpowerHer project with a view to creating sustainable change, empower women and girls, promote menstrual health and hygiene, and contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society in Nigeria.

    Oyebanji appoints 35-year-old Ajayi as economic think-tank member

    Ekiti Governor, Biodun Oyebanji has appointed Mr. Eyitope Ajayi, an architect, as a member of the Economic Management Team.

    The team, comprising 11 members, will be unveiled on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by the Governor.

    A statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Yinka Oyebode, in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, said members of the Economic Management Team, who will serve on part-time basis, will assist the Governor in the formulation of economic and financial policies as well as promotion of investment in line with the administration’s shared prosperity agenda.

    Apart from Ajayi, other members of the team are Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi (Chief Economic Adviser/Head of Team), Mr Feyisayo Charles Ogoji, Mr Falil Ayo Abina, Mr. Tope Adebayo, Dr Olugbenga Oyewole, Ms Folakemi Fatogbe.

    “The quartet of Mr Akin Oyebode (Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development); Mr Niyi Adebayo (Special Adviser, Budget, Economic planning and Performance Management); Mrs Tayo Adeola (Special Adviser, Investment, Trade and Industry) and Mr Ebenezer Boluwade (Special Adviser, Agriculture and Food Security) are internal members of the team.

    “The Biodun Oyebanji administration is committed to building a very strong economic base for the state and ensuring prosperity for the people. The Governor is attracting very good and experienced hands from various sectors and in different parts of the world, to assist in achieving this laudable goal.

    “This is in addition to working with development partners, institutions and private sector players to stimulate economic growth and development in Ekiti State.”

    Confirming his appointment, Ajayi, 35, and the youngest among the team, is the managing partner of Axial Nigeria Limited, whose firm has been focusing on real estate investment management.

    Ajayi, who hailed the government over the appointment, pledged to serve the state with dedication, using his expertise to enhance the administration of Oyebanji to open up wealth and prosperity for the people of the state.

    In a chat with The Nation, Ajayi said: “I take this appointment and assignment with all sense of responsibility as I know the zeal and aspirations of the governor is to make life more meaningful to everybody in the state.

    “I believe this team is made up of diverse and strong willed members who are more resolute to work towards consolidating the achievements of the past governments and paving way for continued and renewed development with the new government.

    “Our team would coordinate government economic programs, serve as the think-tank for government on economic matters, proffer solutions that would tackle unemployment, especially youth unemployment, set the pace for accelerated economic reforms while strengthening existing regulations and improve oversight functions on MDA activities for improved public financial management, focusing on accountability and results.”

    Ajayi, an expert on the viability of their real estate investment projects and plans, has been actively involved with tackling precarious social inequality and global housing deficit problems in developing communities.

    He is a member of the Real Estate Council of Ontario Canada, The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Architects, and an Ambassador of the Stanford Institute for innovation in developing economies, an initiative working to end the cycle of global poverty.

    Ajayi studied architecture at Ryerson University Toronto where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in architecture, the Academy of Art University San Francisco where he obtained a master’s degree in Architecture and an executive MBA at the Lagos business school.

    As a real estate investment specialist broker with Ipro realty, Ontario, he works in the burgeoning real estate scene in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with an unwavering interest in community development through real estate investments and housing affordability.

    Ajayi also worked with the renowned Canadian Architect John Van Nostrand of planning Alliance and regional architects now called SVN Architects involved in community development program with OKLNG Nigeria.
    Till date he continues to explore community development initiatives especially in tackling the precarious social inequality and housing deficit problems in West Africa.

    No fewer than 15 persons are feared trapped in the rubble of a four-story building that collapsed on Monday in Dape, Life Camp area of Abuja.

    It was learnt that the building, which was under construction as of the time of the collapse, is owned by one of the top businessmen in the country.  

    According to eyewitnesses, the building is said to be a hotel with an underground facility.

    As of the time of filing this report, emergency responders and security personnel were being mobilized to the site.

    Residents around the area have been thrown into panic over the incident.

    Many Nigerians have accepted eNaira, says CBN

    The Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) has said many Nigerians have accepted the usage of the e-Naira platform as a means of payment for goods and services.

    It said it has carried out sensitisation tour of the eNaira benefits to traditional rulers, market places and higher institutions of learning.

    Acting Controller of CBN, Akure Branch, Mr. Samuel Giwa, spoke when the apex bank took the eNaira sensitization campaign to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

    Giwa, who unveiled some students of the institution as the bank’s eNaira Ambassadors, said the introduction of digital currency was because of its enormous benefits.

    He said the training of the Ambassadors was to ensure students imbibed and embraced the cashless policy.

    According to him: “We have gone to markets and traditional rulers. We found that the youths constituted larger percentage of our society and it is better we bring it to the students so that they can imbibe the cashless policy.

    “I cannot give you the actual number of persons on the platform but we have a large number of people that have joined the platform. It is safe, efficient, and cost effective.

    “The eNaira is not just any currency; It is designed to complement the existing physical Naira and to provide a more efficient, secure, and accessible means of payment. It represents a remarkable leap forward in how we interact with money, and it is tailor-made to meet the needs of our vibrant and dynamic community.”

    Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, who was represented by Prof. Taiwo Amos, praised the apex bank for carrying the youths along.

    According to Encyclopedia.com, personal hygiene refers to maintaining the cleanliness of one’s body and clothing to preserve overall health and well-being.

    As with other activities, individuals practice in a bid to maintain personal hygiene, the reality TV star outlined having a single partner as one of them.

    “Having one partner is also a personal hygiene,” he wrote.

    Fiery Napoli forward Victor Osimhen has paid a visit to the residence of billionaire business-cum-banking, Tony Elumelu.

    Upon his arrival in Lagos, the Nigeria international who emerged as one of Europe’s leading marksmen in the 2022-23 campaign after netting a league-high 26 goals in 32 Serie A games during Napoli’s surge to the title visited his primary school in the Oregun area of Ikeja where he met with the head teacher who convinced his late father to allow him play football.

    Osimhen, who lived in Olusosun, a small neighborhood near Oregun also visited his hood and was greeted by a large crowd that almost mobbed him.

    As he continued to relive precious childhood moments, the Super Eagles striker also made time out to enjoy himself with some associates including entertainers.

    He bowed his head as a sign of respect as he shook hands with Elumelu who was very much pleased to receive him.

    Osimhen also presented his jersey to the stylish 60-year-old Elumelu who expressed immense pride in him.

    Captioning shared photos with the Napoli superstar, Elumelu tweeted: “We’re all proud of you Victor @victorosimhen9! #SerieATopScorer #Scudetto #TOEWay.”

    She wrote about a man who chases two rats in the post shared on her Instagram story.

    The teenager argued that such a man who decides to run after two rodents would ultimately not catch any.

    “A man who chases two rats will catch none,” she wrote.

    Despite not stating the names of anyone, some internet users chastised presumed her post to be an indirect swipe at her father who’s been actively parading his second wife and kids on social media.

    Others urged the online community to allow the young girl breathe as she merely shared a proverb and wasn’t referring to her father.

    Former England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been named manager of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

    The 43-year-old had said in June he had been invited over to the country to “look at a potential offer” but that he would not be taking it up.

    Gerrard has been out of work since being sacked as Aston Villa manager in October last year.

    Al-Ettifaq were seventh in the 16-team Saudi Pro League last season, finishing 35 points behind champions Al-Ittihad.
