Bayelsa guber: Opu Nembe group backs Sylva

The governorship ambition of former minister of State Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva has received a major boost with a non-governmental organization, Bayelsa Rescue Movement (BRM) throwing their weight behind his governorship ambition.

BRM, Opu Nembe chapter in a statement signed by the trio of Chairman, Chief (Dr) A.J Ameri, co-coordinator, Chief Y.D Theo- Iruo and secretary, Chief K.M Degi commended Sylva for being instrumental of the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture, Bassambiri.

The group which said it has unreserved appreciation and commendation for Sylva also commended former president, Mohammadu Buhari and former Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu for the approval of the Federal University of Agriculture, Bassambiri.

BRM equally commended the effort of the President, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu for allowing the “candle light pitched in our kingdom by his predecessor.”

“We, as well, express our deep appreciation to the Federal Government for appointing our own son of the soil, a renowned Professor of Agriculture, Professor Reginald Inodu Keremah as the pioneer Vice Chancellor through the instrumentality of Chief Sylva. Posterity will forever remember you,” they said.

On the forthcoming governorship election, the group pledged its support for Sylva noting that it would rally its members and the people of Opu- Nembe to vote for the All Progressive Congress (APC).

According to the group, it would ensure it mobilizes the people to reciprocate the love Sylva has shown for the people by voting him in as governor.

The group therefore urged the general public to disregard news targeted at discrediting Sylva, noting that it is the handiwork of disgruntled elements.

The statement read, “In the same vein, we wish to assure Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva that Opu Nembe (Bassambiri) people are solidly behind his gubernatorial ambition, as well to reciprocate the unequaled love he has demonstrated for the Opu Nembe Kingdom.

“The group therefore urges the general public to disregard whatever uncomplimentary remarks and frivolous allegations being peddled against him by some disgruntled elements in the community.

“The Opu-Nembe chapter of the Bayelsa Rescue Movement, wishes to vow in strong terms to do our possible best in making sure, Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva is elected Governor of Bayelsa State come November, 2023”

  • ‘How 20m jobs can be created with solar energy’

‘How 20m jobs can be created with solar energy’

The President, Asteven Group and Founder Asteven Renewable Energy Institute, Dr Sunny Akpoyibo, has said the President Bola Tinubu administration can create up to 20 million jobs in the country in the solar energy industry.

Akpoyibo, also the President, Council on Renewable Energy in Nigeria (CREN), stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

He said this can be achieved through proper partnership and inclusion of private sector players in the industry.

He also called on President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on practical solar energy training for at least 500 youths across all the local governments in the country in the next four years so that more than 20 million Nigerians can be gainfully employed.

The CREN and Asteven Group President urged the Federal Government to partner with various stakeholders such as States, National Assembly, NGOs, Non-profit Foundations, Oil Companies and private companies in sponsoring youths to save the country billions of Naira that would have been exported out of the country.

“According to recent report by economic analysts and experts Nigeria is projected to record increase in unemployment to more than 40% in 2023 posing as a great challenge to the new government of President, Sen Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was sworn into office 29th May, 2023.

“This is a red alert comparing the resultant effect of unemployment in the country from 2018 when it was almost half the current speculation giving rise to insecurity and unprecedented high rate of crime in the country majorly perpetuated by the youths.

“It is also imperative to emphasise that the projection may be far less than what will be recorded in the days ahead due given the removal fuel subsidy,” he said.

Akpoyibo noted that even though Nigeria has a population of over 100 million youths and one of the most endowed countries with solar energy in the world, the country still ranks very low in complying with the energy transition programme in the areas of technical expertise and product manufacturing.

He said: “A large population of Nigeria youths are ignorant of the industry and have been unable to harness the enormous opportunities in the industry giving the billions of dollars invested into the sector. So many youths are looking for white collar jobs when they can be financial independent through the acquisition of skills in the solar energy industry.

“The numerous solar energy projects implemented by the previous administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari even though well intended were short lived due to the lack of sustainability plan that would have mitigated the billions lost in deployment of solar projects such as Solar Naija Home, Energizing Education, Energizing Markets, Solar off-grid etc.

“Even the government agencies executed projects that were without provision for equal deployment of technical skills that would ensure sustainability and maintenance of such projects. How can solar companies take people from Akwa Ibom to go and execute a solar project in Kano with little or no skilled indigenes? Already such a project cannot be sustainable as you don’t expect the expert to travel from Akwa Ibom to Kano anytime there is a problem with the system.

“But this is because most local areas within the country lack skilled workers who mainly situated within the cities and urban areas. As soon as a project is commissioned the contractor leaves and never returns to that location ever again leading to dilapidation of the project.”

The renewable energy consultant said Nigeria is currently generating just 37 megawatts of solar energy when it holds the potential for 500,000 megawatts, and estimated billions of dollars in economic value to equip the youths to become empowered and economically viable within their immediate communities.

“This is the future that government must prepare our youths for rather than the growing buying motorcycles, taxis and others that can be lost if damaged yet a skill can never be lost.

“In the days ahead as our new President, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu makes efforts to increase employment in the country there must be a deliberate and holistic attention to private partnership in training of the youths. It is imperative to ensure that all solar budgetary arrangements must capture training of indigenous youths who will ensure sustainability of these projects.

“Nigeria is properly positioned to lead the energy transition programme in Africa to such extent that international organizations like the World Bank, Africa Development Bank, European Development and so many others will commit to supporting more solar projects in the country.

“Everyone depends on energy no matter where they are, and even those in the rural areas are migrating to the urban areas due to lack energy. But energy can be taken to every locality and efficiently sustained with adequate skills. This will address the country’s energy shortfall.

“Asteven Group is one of the pioneer indigenous solar companies that manufactured world class products for the Nigerian market creating thousands of jobs through vendors and merchants of our products. Over the past 15 years, the company has operated across the six geo-political zones in the country and around five African countries deploying cutting edge solar technology.

“It is in the course of our business expedition that we discovered the lack of skills in the solar industry in the country with largely 98% of solar projects outsourced to foreigners even with billions voted by government at federal and state levels, and bulk of the money getting repatriated by foreigners to their own countries without adding much value to our economy,” he added.

  • Plateau APC Crisis: Ex-lawmaker cautions against unlawful suspensions

Plateau APC Crisis: Ex-lawmaker cautions against unlawful suspensions

Former Rep. Alphonsus Komsol from Plateau has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state against unlawful suspension of any member of the party.

Komsol, the immediate past representative of  Shendam/Quaan-Pan/Mikang Constituency of Plateau, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

Fielding questions on the internal crisis rocking the state chapter of the APC, he described the alleged plot to suspend him and some other members of APC in the state as a huge joke.

According to him, the plan is not healthy for the party, saying executing such action will be an ill wind which will do more damage than good.

The ex-lawmaker attributed the intra-party crisis to “politics of exclusion” in which the then ruling party and government allegedly excluded some critical stakeholders from the party’s major activities and decision making deliberately.

He said that most of the APC members were not carried along in the affairs of the party as they were given the leper’s treatment and relegated to the background.

“Prior to the general elections, for instance, to the best of my knowledge, no caucus meeting was ever held. On the few occasions that party meetings were held, usually in Government House, it was only for state government appointees to be given strict marching orders on whatever the government wanted.

“Throughout the four years that I was elected to the House of Representatives, never was any caucus meeting of the party ever held.

“Even right now, about four months now since the party’s depletion and comprehensive losses in the 2023 elections, nobody has called us to a meeting,” Komsol said.

The ex-legislator said there was need for urgent reconciliatory meeting and post-mortem appraisal of the situation to chart a way forward.

“While we have been waiting expectantly for such a meeting to be called, there is no such initiative.

“We are faced with a situation that I’ll describe as an uneasy silence of the graveyard,” he said.

Komsol however said that the recent plan to suspend some prominent stakeholders from the party would further throw the APC into deeper irredeemable crisis.

The APC stalwart alleged that some stakeholders targeted with suspension were those who paid a solidarity visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, following his appointment by the President.

These, according to him, include ex-Gov. Joshua Dariye, Chief Amos Gizo, Dame Pauline Tallen, Sen. Hezekiah Dimka, Sen. Nora Daduut, Lumumba Adeh, Alhaji Dasuki Nakande, Comptroller Victor Dimka, Chief Danyaro Sarpiya and himself, among others.

He said: “For God’s sake, Akume is one of our own, from the North Central and the defunct Benue-Plateau State.

“When he was appointed, we expected the state chapter of the party to immediately congratulate him and arrange for the state’s APC stakeholders to pay him a solidarity visit, but there was no such move.

“As such, some of us decided to do the needful by paying Akume the solidarity visit, which triggered the latest round of turmoil within the state chapter of the APC.

“Their grievance is that the person who they wanted to be appointed SGF lost out to Akume.

“So, immediately after the news and photos of our visit went viral, we started receiving all manner of threats from our opponents within the party.”

Komsol said that the solution to the party’s crisis was for the immediate past governor Simon Lalong, who is still the APC leader in the state, to summon a meeting of critical stakeholders.

He said that would help the party to do some critical stock taking, identify the lapses and what went wrong with a view to learning lessons, making corrections, reconcile and rebuild the APC into state.

“It would surprise you to know that while I was still serving as the House of Representatives member representing the sitting governor’s Federal Constituency, at some point, for over six months, I tried to see the governor to no avail.

“We are politicians, we cannot fold our hands and watch the APC crash permanently in Plateau state.

“We are President Tinubu’s die-hard supporters, we have to do everything possible within our means to bring back the party to galvanise support for him at the grassroots level in our state,” he said.

The APC chieftain, who described himself, Gizo, Tallen, Nakande and few others in the state as trusted allies of Tinubu, claimed he knew the president for almost 20 years, since he was the governor of Lagos state.

Komsol recalled that his first encounter with Tinubu and what he did instantly amazed him so much that he had vowed to be his disciple forever.

“It was during the arrest and detention of Simon Lalong, the then Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and immediate past governor of the state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“Former Gov. Joshua Dariye had dispatched me and a few others to Lagos to do everything possible to secure Lalong’s release, but the bail conditions were very stringent.

“However, Tinubu who was then governor on the platform of an opposition party, the Alliance for Democracy, came to our rescue and even gave us the title documents of properties for Lalong to be released after he had spent about 40 days in EFCC custody.

“So, for me, when Tinubu declared his interest in contesting for President, it was a very easy decision to make, support him to the end, no matter whose ox is gored, even if I was going to be the last man standing!”

He alleged that some of the people in the state claiming to be Tinubu supporters were just looking for political relevance and appointments.

Komsol said that as Tinubu’s faithful disciple, he played some prominent roles towards the victory of Tinubu during both the presidential primary election and his eventual emergence as President of Nigeria.

“During the elections, I was the Plateau State Coordinator of Tinubu’s Independent Campaign Committee and a prominent member of the Tinubu Support Group, as well as the Planning and Strategic Committee.

“I was also a member of the Presidential Campaign Council and Secretary, Contact and Mobilisation Committee, North Central of the Tinubu Campaign organogram.

“In fact, I was targeted, sacrificed and denied the APC’s second term Reps ticket by the APC at the state level because of my unwavering support for Tinubu prior to the presidential primaries,” he said.

He added that during the primary, him and others were able to convince some of the state’s delegates to vote for Tinubu, in spite of the internal forces within the party that directed the delegates to vote for former Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

    Crack in Akeredolu’s cabinet deepens

The crack among members of the Ondo State Executive Council have further deepened due to the absence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Akeredolu is expected to resume from his medical leave on Thursday, July 6th.

Akeredolu handed over power to his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa in a letter he sent to the Ondo Assembly.

It was gathered that some cabinet members refused to honour meetings called by Aiyedatiwa.

Sources said the State Executive Council meeting held only once since the Governor proceeded on medical leave.

Aiyedatiwa is said to be interested in succeeding his boss but he has not received the buy in of all the cabinet members.

Ondo Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, said the Acting Governor has not summoned State Executive Council meeting.

The Commissioner said all cabinet members would attend if the council meeting were to hold.

She also dismissed talks that some cabinet members refused to attend meeting called by Aiyedatiwa.
