Tinubu in Paris: Who are the saboteurs?

    • By, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello

The attempts to undermine the achievements of Mr. President during his visit to France is unfair. This set of people want to diminish the growing popularity and global recognition of Tinubu’s accomplishments within just three weeks of his tenure. However, their efforts will ultimately prove futile.

Firstly, their strategy began with the spread of rumors regarding the increase in electricity tariffs. It is suspicious that such rumors surfaced precisely when Tinubu was diligently working towards revitalizing the Nigerian economy. It appears that their intention is to cause more problems for the poor despite Tinubu’s statement, “Let the poor breathe”.

Additionally, fake news have been circulated about salary increments. It is surprising why such claims were made in the absence of the president, especially considering that he had not been briefed on the matter. The motive behind publicizing this information without verifying its authenticity seems rooted in a mischievous desire to create problems for a president who is already performing really well.

Rest assured, their endeavors will not succeed, and upon his return, I hope the President will initiate an investigation or inquiry into the circulation of such fake news and duly punish those responsibly.

During the initial weeks of his tenure, Tinubu has introduced and set in motion policies aimed at uplifting Nigerians from the clutches of economic regression. Unfortunately, there are some individuals who oppose these measures and seek to discredit his efforts, despite the widespread praise he has received both domestically and internationally.

Their actions display a coordinated pattern, utilizing both mainstream and social media platforms to disseminate falsehoods. Even after the Presidency officially denied these claims, they kept on engaging in the campaign of calumny indicating a hidden agenda behind their actions.

To those who engage in sabotage, be aware that this government is here to stay, regardless of the level of obstruction you attempt to bring. Asiwaju and his team are fully prepared to overcome and crush the efforts of saboteurs, and they remain determined to succeed in their mission.

In conclusion, it is imperative that everyone join hands to support the government’s initiatives and contribute to the journey of renewed hope. Tinubu has genuine intentions and deserves our collective support.

    Disco backtracks on tariff hike

Barely 18 hours after announcing a tariff hike, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) on Monday backtracked.

The management, in a public announcement to its customers, urged the customers to ignore its previous announcement of an upward tariff review.

AEDC noted that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was yet to approve such an increase for the company.

It said: “Please disregard the communication circulating in the media regarding the review of electricity tariffs. Be informed that no approval for such an increment has been received. We regret any inconvenience.”

The company on Monday night issued a public service announcement saying it would increase its tariff effective from 1st July 2023 because of the exchange rate that has soared from N451 in 2022 to N750.

AEDC said, “For customers within bands B and C, with supply hours ranging from 12 to 16 per day, the new base tariff is expected to be N100 per kWh while  Bands A with (20 hours and above) and B (16 to 20 hours) will experience comparatively higher tariffs.”

The message reads in part: Public Service Announcement.
    Dear Valued Customers,

“Effective July 1st 2023, please be informed that there will be an upward review to the electricity tariff influenced by the fluctuating exchange rate.

“Under the MYTO 2022 guidelines, the previously set exchange rate of N441/$1 may now be revised to approximately N750/$1 which will have an impact on the tariffs associated with your electricity consumption.”

  • Fed Govt urges Appeal Court to reverse judgment awarding N5b to Ararume, reinstatement as NNPCL chairman

Fed Govt urges Appeal Court to reverse judgment awarding N5b to Ararume, reinstatement as NNPCL chairman

The Federal Government has urged the Court of Appeal to reverse the April 18 judgment by the Federal High Court, Abuja ordering among others, the reinstatement of Ifeanyi Ararume as the Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL).

The Federal Govt also faulted the N5billion damages awarded in Ararume’s favour in the judgment given by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, arguing that he (Ararume) did not establish his entitlement to such a huge compensation.

The government’s position is contained in an eight-ground notice of appeal filed in the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by a team of lawyers from the Federal Ministry of Justice, led by Tijani Gazali (SAN).

Ararume had sued the Fed Govt on September 12 last year to challenge then President Muhammadu Buhari’s reversal of his appointment as the Non-Executive Chairman of the NNPCL via a letter dated January 17, 2022.

In his April 18, 2023  judgment in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1621/2022, Justice Ekwo faulted Buhari’s action, ordered Ararume’s reinstatement and awarded N5b damages in his favour.

The Fed Govt, in its notice of appeal, challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to have heard the case, and also queried the competence of the suit, arguing that it was statute barred.

In its first ground of appeal, the Fed Govt faulted the trial judge for assuming jurisdiction over the case which borders on the withdrawal of Ararume’s appointment as the Non-Executive Chairman of the NNPCL.

It argued that under the provision of the National Industrial Court (NIC) Act and Section 254(c) of the Constitution, the NIC has the exclusive jurisdiction in civil matters bordering on labour and employment.
