Bandits shoot one, kidnap six in Kaduna Millennium City

Bandits on Friday night attacked Ungwan Maaji, in the New Millennium City area, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, shooting one person and whisking away six others.

The attackers, according to survivors, stormed  the area around 9:10pm and attacked a house close to Chaha Eye Hospital, where they abducted a housewife and her house help.

Residents of the area said the bandits attacked another house on the same street, where they abducted four other persons.

An eye witness said two other persons who were taking fresh air outside their house were also kidnapped, but the two escaped while they were being taken away through a stream at the back of the community.

Narrating how he escaped, the Imam of the area, said he was yet to return home after leading the ‘Isha’i’ prayer usually done around 8:00pm when the kidnappers arrived.

According to him: “I was picked in from of the Mosque, then they broke into two other houses and picked six people. While they were breaking the second house, myself, another neighbor, the women and her house help kidnapped from the first house were asked to lie down on the bare floor over there.

“After the bandits broke into the second house and picked four people, we became eight, then they started leading us out of the community. On getting to the stream at the far end of the community, the two of us picked outside, escaped while they were attempting to make us cross the stream.

“The bandits were small boys. I think the eldest of them should not be more than 20years old,” the Imam said.

It was also gathered that, the bandits shot one resident of the area who was just returning home in his car.

When The Nation visited the area Saturday morning, the bullet ridden Peugeot 406 belonging to the shot resident was still on ground.

Residents said:“the man was returning him his car and the bandits made attempt to stop him, but he refused, so they sprayed his vehicle with bullets.”

When contacted Kaduna Police spokesman DSP Muhammad Jalige said he would contact the DPO in charge of Millennium City and revert. He was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Dietician charges NAFDAC to regulate mode of processing cow hide into “ponmo”

A dietician, Dr Salami Akorede, has called on NAFDAC to regulate the mode of processing cow hide into “ponmo’’ for human consumption.

Akorede is the Director, Dietetics Department at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at Ile-Ife on Saturday that the popular mode of burning cow hide on naked fire to produce “ponmo’’ was deleterious to health.

He stressed that the process of burning cow hide on naked fire made the product to become potential source of cancer when consumed regularly.

“Where it is well processed, `ponmo’ is a good source of protein, water, energy and micronutrients which contain fibre that aid digestion.

“In producing `ponmo’, processors should regulate the exposure of the cow hide to naked fire so as to minimise the formation of nitrates on them.

“ `Ponmo’ can also serve as alternative to meat as it is cheap and affordable.’’ Dr Akorede said.

The dietician urged consumers to ensure they took `ponmo’ alongside other protein-rich sources like meat, fish, crayfish and soya balls to complement their protein supply.

He charged the Federal Government to reduce taxes on fish and chicken so as to make them affordable as source of protein.

“More people should be encouraged to take to animal husbandry to reduce the in-take of `ponmo’, however,’’ Akorede said.

Flying Scotsman: Legendary steam locomotive celebrates 100th anniversary

In 2023, a significant milestone is reached as the Flying Scotsman, the legendary steam locomotive, celebrates its 100th anniversary.

This momentous occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of this iconic machine and its profound impact on the world of railways.

    Flying Scotsman

The Flying Scotsman, built in 1923 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, one of the most revered engineers in British railway history. Its construction marked a new era in steam locomotive design, combining elegance, power, and speed. From its inaugural journey, the Flying Scotsman embodied the aspirations and ambitions of a nation eager to push the boundaries of railway engineering.

Throughout its illustrious career, the Flying Scotsman achieved remarkable milestones that cemented its place in history. In 1928, it became the first steam locomotive to reach the remarkable speed of 100 miles per hour, an extraordinary feat that captured the world’s attention. This achievement not only showcased the engineering excellence of Gresley’s design but also demonstrated the potential of steam power.

Beyond its speed record, the Flying Scotsman was synonymous with the prestigious express train it hauled—the Flying Scotsman service between London and Edinburgh. Passengers experienced a sense of luxury and comfort as they traversed the picturesque landscapes of Britain aboard this remarkable locomotive. The name “Flying Scotsman” became synonymous with reliability, elegance, and the epitome of long-distance travel.

However, the journey of the Flying Scotsman was not without challenges. It weathered the storm of economic and technological changes that ultimately led to the decline of steam locomotives. As diesel and electric trains gained prominence, the fate of the Flying Scotsman hung in the balance. It narrowly avoided being scrapped multiple times, thanks to the vision and determination of individuals who recognized its historical significance.

Throughout its life, the Flying Scotsman underwent several modifications and restorations. The locomotive was streamlined in the 1930s, enhancing its performance and giving it a distinctive appearance. In the 1960s, it faced an uncertain future but found salvation when Alan Pegler acquired it, embarking on a mission to preserve this national treasure.

Since its restoration in the early 2000s, the Flying Scotsman has been a star attraction on heritage railways, delighting enthusiasts and the general public alike. It’s resplendent green livery and majestic presence evoke a sense of nostalgia, transporting people back to the golden age of steam travel. The locomotive has become an ambassador for British engineering heritage, captivating audiences around the world during its international tours.

As we commemorate 100 years since the birth of the Flying Scotsman, it is a time to celebrate its enduring legacy and pay tribute to the visionaries, engineers, and enthusiasts who have preserved this icon for future generations. The locomotive stands as a testament to the power of human ingenuity, reminding us of the achievements of the past while inspiring future advancements in railway technology.

In conclusion, the 100th anniversary of the Flying Scotsman in 2023 is a milestone that highlights the extraordinary journey of this legendary locomotive. From its record-breaking speed to its survival against the odds, the Flying Scotsman embodies the spirit of innovation, adventure, and national pride. As we reflect on its century-long story, we appreciate the cultural and historical significance of this remarkable machine and the enduring fascination it continues to evoke.

  • NSCDC HND holders decry disparity in career progression

NSCDC HND holders decry disparity in career progression

Some personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) who are Higher National Diploma (HND) holders, have decried disparity between them and their counterparts who ate university degree holders.

The complainants under the aegis of Concerned HND Holders in NSCDC urged the Federal Government to right the wrong.

They lamented that the discrimination had led to ill-treatment and lack of career progression in the corps.

The affected personnel hinted that the disparity in the scheme of service had dampened their morale in the service.

Read Also: Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

Recently, Federal Government removed the dichotomy between degree and HND holders in NSCDC, Fire Immigration, and Prison Services.

The aggrieved NSCDC specifically alleged that the 2012 HND holders intakes were being discriminated against compared to their mates in other sister agencies in the same Ministry of Interior.

The group, in its petition obtained by our correspondent, said: “HND holders were recruited into the NSCDC in the year 2012 as  Inspector of Corps rank (Grade Level 07). The same year, on the same process, NCE holders were placed on GL 07 and Bsc holders on GL 08.

“This was based on the conditions of service at that time, which was a bad indicator of suppressing some set of people instead of encouraging competency and proactiveness between HND holders and Bsc, as is found in other Sisters Agencies for effective service delivery because of how sensitive security responsibility is.

“We wrote the Confirmation and Promotion examination in the year 2014, with the Bsc counterparts, being the statutory year to be confirmed, according to Public Service Rules.

‘The Bsc holders were advanced, but rather, in our case, we were not advanced neither properly placed nor  promoted after passing the COMPRO exam, contrary to extant regulations.

The group urged President Bola Tinubu, the Senate President and all concerned to look into their matter and restore them to the right rank which reflects their years of service.

It added in 2016, there was another replacement/recruitment exercise, and all officers recruited then as assistant superintendent of Corps II (ASCII) were all given automatic promotions to the next rank while all HND holders recruited in 2012 were still in stagnation as Inspectors of Corps. (Grade level 7) till 2018.

But in 2018, the Federal Government enforced the removal of the HND/BSC dichotomy, and this order was implemented in other Sister Para-military Agencies under the Ministry of Interior since the year 2016. That, therefore, became a saving grace for HND 2012 intakes to progress to ASCII (Level 8) in 2018

“Majority of our Bsc holders, counterparts, that we were recruited together in the year 2012, are now hanging the rank of Superintendent ( Eagle, i.e. GL 11), while up to 95% of us, HND holders of 2012 recruits, are painfully stagnated to one star( ASCII, GL 08) up till now i.e. year 2023!

“After being denied promotion exams for many years, 2022 made it the 4th consecutive year that we have been writing and passing promotion examinations, yet, without promotion!

“All other categories of personnel, including SSCE, NCE and Trade test holders have been writing promotion exams, as at when due, except the holders of the HND 2012 intake who have been variously denied for several years!

“Some junior officers that were recruited in 2012 with CAIII, GL 03, (The least rank) who later got themselves enrolled in Part-time degree programs, were not only converted to the Senior rank but also inexplicably got promoted to two-star (ASCI, GL 09), thereby placing them above us that were recruited initially with HND Certificates in 2012!

“Since April 16, 2012( 11 years down the line), when we were nominally enlisted into NSCDC, the majority of us don’t know what a promotion letter looks like. Even the so-called 2016 Advancement, up till now, there is no letter issued to that effect!

“It has become an annual ritual in NSCDC that Officers from the junior cadre get converted into the Superintendent cadre, thereby creating an unnecessary and questionable shoot-up in the number of senior officers in the Corps, and also making promotion to the next rank extremely difficult, to the detriment of us that were recruited with HND certificate in 2012!

“Having removed the dichotomy, The NSCDC started upgrading both the holders of Bsc and HND of 2019 intakes together. Those who got recruited and trained in the year 2022 were decorated with one star. This means they will be hanging two stars as soon as their COMPRO results are considered, just like their colleagues in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), are already in two stars. Without mincing words, this places us in an uncomfortable, unpalatable and unacceptable position of having to be juniors to two batches of recruits after us (i.e. 2016 and 2019 intakes)!

“Our career stagnancy after 11 years of enlistment into the active service of NSCDC is unfair and unjust. There is no gainsaying this is alien to the Public Service Rule which stipulates that officers in our cadre should have a maximum of three years before they get promoted to the next rank. We shouldn’t be made to write another promotion exam this year again as we have been grossly shortchanged in the years back,” the petition added.

  • Social media has taken humanity backwards, says Soyinka

Social media has taken humanity backwards, says Soyinka

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has expressed grave concern over the negative use of technology and social media, saying it is now in the hands of ignoramuses.

He stated the wrong usage of  technology is fast taking humanity backwards due to the use of profiling and abusive words.

Soyinka, who spoke on Friday in Lagos at the unveiling of his latest interventions volume, titled: “The Putin Files,” at Freedom Park Lagos, confessed to not being a fan of the social media.

     He said: “I don’t tweet, I don’t WhatsApp. I tried WhatsApp but I stopped.”

Reading from the book, Soyinka said: “Project Nigeria, I must confess, has become near terminally soul-searing. Do I still believe in it? I am no longer certain, but first we must rid ourselves of the tyranny of the ignorant and the opportunism of time-servers.

“In any case, there is not much else to engage one on a foundation of ownership stakes. There is, of course, always the possibility of a revolution, with a clarity of purpose and acceptance of all attendant risks, including costly errors.

“Revolutions are not, however, based on the impetus of speculative power entitlement. No matter, until that moment, the structures that ensures just and equitable cohabitation must be protected from partisan appropriation – be it from material inducement, fake news or verbal terrorism – the last being the contribution of one who is positioned to assume co-leadership of the nation, no less.”

According to him, the whole concept of democracy needs to be re-examined.

He added: “Revolution is not about lining up behind nearest available symbol. When a symbol does emerge, however, we are still obliged to examine every aspect of what is fortuitously an offer, and continue to guard our freedoms every inch of the way.”

He said Putin, as used in his book, is a metaphor and reality, adding: “We can’t be shielded from what is happening.”

He however described EndSARS as one of the most successful movements in this country because it was based on truth.

  • The Evolution of Transfer Windows in European Soccer: Fostering Fairness and Preserving the Beautiful Game

The Evolution of Transfer Windows in European Soccer: Fostering Fairness and Preserving the Beautiful Game

European soccer, known as football, is a thrilling sport with passionate fans and iconic players. A key element of the game is player transfers, where clubs acquire and release players during designated periods called transfer windows. These windows have a rich history, evolving to balance fair competition and maintain the game’s integrity. Each player’s move, no matter how insignificant it may look on the surface, affects the team’s odds to place higher or lower in the league. That’s why punters, for example, are very careful when they hear about new transfers, placing bets and getting new information on reliable bookmakers’ sites to get closer to gains. In this article, we explore the creation, regulation, and significance of transfer windows in European soccer.

    The Birth of Transfer Windows

Transfer windows emerged as a response to the commercialization and globalization of European soccer. Previously, clubs had the freedom to buy and sell players year-round, leading to unpredictable squad changes and potential disruptions to team stability during a season.

To bring order and structure to player transfers, FIFA, the international governing body for soccer, introduced the first transfer window system in 2002. Supported by UEFA and national football associations across Europe, this move aimed to regulate the transfer process.

    Regulation and Control

FIFA and national football associations have jurisdiction over the regulation of transfer windows in European soccer. These organizations implement rules and guidelines to ensure fair and transparent transfers:

    1. Duration and Timing

Transfer windows have specific start and end dates, providing a defined period for clubs to conduct player transfers. The timing of these windows varies among countries and leagues. In European leagues, the primary transfer window occurs during the summer, between seasons. Additionally, a shorter secondary transfer window is opened during the winter months.

    1. Player Eligibility and Documentation

To maintain fairness and prevent any potential misuse, regulations require players to meet specific eligibility criteria for transfers. This includes valid contracts, proper documentation, and compliance with international and domestic transfer regulations.

    1. Financial Fair Play

Another crucial aspect of transfer window regulations is the concept of Financial Fair Play (FFP). FFP was introduced by UEFA to promote financial stability and prevent clubs from excessive spending, which could lead to unsustainable debt and an unfair advantage in competitions. Clubs are required to balance their financial books and adhere to certain spending limits to ensure long-term viability.

    Reasons and Benefits

The establishment of transfer windows has brought several notable benefits to European soccer:

    1. Enhanced Competitive Balance

By restricting player transfers to specific periods, transfer windows level the playing field, allowing all clubs an equal opportunity to strengthen their squads. This helps prevent a handful of wealthy clubs from dominating the transfer market and promotes a more competitive and balanced environment.

    1. Preservation of Squad Stability

Transfer windows provide a sense of stability to teams throughout the season. By having specific periods dedicated to player transfers, clubs can plan their squad development, tactical strategies, and player recruitment more effectively. This fosters a cohesive team environment and maintains the integrity of the game.

    1. Increased Market Activity

Transfer windows generate immense excitement and anticipation among fans, creating a buzz of activity in the soccer market. Speculation and rumors surrounding potential transfers generate media interest and fan engagement, contributing to the overall appeal and popularity of the sport.

    Conclusion

The history of transfer windows in European soccer reflects the sport’s evolution and its growing need for regulation and structure in the face of commercialization. FIFA, UEFA, and national football associations have collaborated to create a system that promotes fairness, stability, and sustainability in player transfers. The establishment of transfer windows has fostered competitive balance, squad stability, and increased market activity, while preserving the essence and integrity of the beautiful game. As we continue to witness the ever-changing landscape of European soccer, transfer windows will remain a fundamental aspect of the sport, ensuring that the pursuit of excellence on the field remains the ultimate driving force.
