Wike: I was poisoned, my liver, kidney shut down

The immediate past Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed some life-threatening scenarios he kept as secrets during his eight-year tenure..

The former Governor, in a special Thanksgiving service on Sunday organised by his family at the St. Peters Deanery, Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, revealed that he was poisoned at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in December 2018.

He said the poison ravaged his internal organs, affecting his liver and kidneys and almost killed him but for God’s interventions.

Hundreds of dignitaries, who attended the service, listened in shock as the former Governor disclosed his kept secrets.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The service was attended by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Deputy Senate President, many senators, over 35 members of the House of Representatives, many former Governors, former ministers, royal fathers, captains of industries, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) among other Very Important Persons (VIPs).

Narrating how he almost died of poisoning, Wike said: “God was in charge, everybody who knew how we came to power in 2015, knew it was turbulent. But God saw us through. When you are in office, many people think things are going well with you. Nobody wants to find out the problems you are facing as a human.

“In December 2018, it was a day my former Chief of Staff was going to have Thanksgiving. I was to attend that Thanksgiving. From that Sunday I never came down from my room. It was bad. But those who attended the January 1st state banquet of 2019 will know that I never spoke that day. I just sat down there and told the Deputy Governor to speak on my behalf. I thought it was over”.

Wike said he was flown to a hospital in Beirut at 12 midnight where doctors after running series of tests told him that his liver and kidney were all gone.

“I didn’t know I had been poisoned at our party’s secretariat”, he said adding that the doctors after some treatments returned and told him his organs had started working again.

He said the doctors discharged him after about a week and asked him to return home noting that he altered his itinerary during the campaigns for his second term.

The former Governor said everybody became a suspect as he decided that he would not enter any party leader’s home during the course of his campaigns.

He recalled that the second incident of God’s intervention in his life was when his wife called him during his presidential primary campaign and told him that she had been diagnosed of cancer.

Wike said he called the leaders in his campaign team including the G-5 Governors that there was a problem and he was planning to quit the race.

But he said his wife encouraged him to continue with his campaigns that all would be well.

The Governor also recalled that after the primary when he was on a trip to Abuja in the company of his wife, he got information that a mysterious fire gutted his wife’s room and destroyed everything she had as a woman.

Despite all the challenges, he said: “Being a strong woman, my wife never showed it. But today my wife is hale and hearty. The cancer incident was the one I knew that God had done all for me”.

Wike further recalled that on another occasion, God saved him and three other leaders from a plane crash.

He said while they were travelling to Abuja after the presidential primary, one of the engines of the aircraft exploded 15 minutes after take-off.

“15 minutes of take off at the airforce base, we heard an explosion. They locked the cockpit. One engine is gone and the pilot said it was safer to turn back to Port Harcourt. Before we landed there were many ambulances and fire service trucks lined up. We landed safely by the Grace of God. I didn’t tell anybody,” he said.

The former Governor said he kept most of the incidents secret to avoid frightening his supporters, who could begin to behave anyhow.

Wike said he decided to thank God for allowing a peaceful transition in Rivers and granting him victories in all the elections held in the state.

“Ask my colleague how they felt that their candidates didn’t make it as their successors. Even those not sworn-in yet started tormenting their predecessors. But nobody is tormenting me”.

The former governor said there was a gang-up in his party at the national level to arrest him if his decisions had failed adding that at some points his loyalists were scared that they would all be in trouble.

He disclosed that all the forms for all elections in the party were acquired by him noting that no candidate of the party paid a dime to buy forms.

“I paid for every form. Nobody would say he paid any money to buy forms from governorship to House of Assembly. We agreed to work as a team. In the House of Assembly only one form, Senate same. We didn’t want to have anything called post election crisis,” he said.

He said all the governorship aspirants signed an agreement drafted by the party elders that they would support the choice of the party for the governorship poll

But Wike said: “When somebody was chosen, there was a gang-up. They moved to Abuja and started plotting how they would arrest me after winning at the centre. All evil plots against me failed.

“Those close to me were worried. But I told them to have faith they would not be finished. God never abandoned us.Today we have a governor, who is our successor. I don’t look back because I know I am protected everywhere”.

Wike disclosed why he supported Akpabio for Senate Presidency saying the former Akwa Ibom Governor defied criticisms to back his governorship ambition in 2015.

He said Akpabio donated N200m to his campaign adding that one good turn deserves another.

He said: “When I was running in 2014 and 2015 he came out and supported me. He gave me N200m for that election. That is why I said one good turn deserves another. I supported him this time and I thank God he won”.

Wike thanked all members of the G-5 and Integrity Group for the roles they played during the presidential election.

Arsenal still in talks for Chelsea forward Havertz

Arsenal are still in talks with Chelsea over the signing of Kai Havertz.

Havertz, 24, has two years left on his contract and Arsenal hold an ongoing interest in the Germany forward.

The new ownership at Chelsea want to avoid letting players enter the final two years of their deals and Havertz, whose contract runs out in 2025, is yet to agree to an extension at the club.

It could be a busy summer at Arsenal, who are also pursuing a move for West Ham’s England midfielder Declan Rice.

However, a move for the 24-year-old would not end the Gunners’ interest in Brighton’s Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The 21-year-old has been on Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s radar for some time, with Caicedo saying he was “really close” to signing for the north London club in January.

The club are yet to receive an offer for 30-year-old Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, but one player who could leave the Emirates this summer is USA striker Folarin Balogun.

The 21-year-old had an excellent season on loan at Ligue 1 club Reims, scoring 21 goals.

There is interest from across Europe and clubs in the lower half of the Premier League, with Arsenal willing to let the striker leave if a suitable offer comes in.

Arsenal head to Germany on 9 July for the start of their pre-season camp and would like some business to be done before that date.

  • APC, right platform to serve Nigerians – Defecting SDP Candidate

APC, right platform to serve Nigerians – Defecting SDP Candidate

A Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the Feb. 25 House of Representatives poll, Mr Oluwaseyi Ogundare, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the right political platform for potential leaders to serve Nigerians.

Ogundare, fondly called OGO, stated this at the APC secretariat in Akure on Saturday, while defecting from SDP to the APC.

Ogundare contested under the SDP platform as the party’s candidate in the Owo/Ose Federal Constituency of Ondo State.

He explained that as a grassroots politician, he had realised that the APC had the right calibre of people that could allow him to achieve his agenda of positively impacting his constituents.

Ogundare, a philanthropist, said he felt that the APC would give him the platform to contribute his quota to the development and transformation of the state and the country at large.

He added that the APC was the right platform where he could meet the right people that would enable and support him to help his constituents

He stated that his defection to the APC did not mean he was ‘over ambitious’, but a wise decision to take.

According to him, there is now a clear difference between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), SDP and APC.

“I actually contested on the platform of the SDP. I am leaving that party because I have seen the APC as a platform for me to work for our people. And so, in order for me to work for my people, I have to be in the right party.

“Being in this platform, therefore, I will have the ability to perform and work for our people. It is not that I’m over ambitious, but being in APC, I will have the right people to work with.

“I have been in the PDP, so I know what it means to be in the opposition and I have been in the SDP, so, I know what it means to be in the mushroom party so to say, and I now know the difference. I believe this is the right place to be,” he stated.

Ogundare said he had been an impactful personality in his constituency, adding that his membership of the APC would be an asset to the party.

“I am bringing progressiveness to the APC and we will take this party to greater heights,” he said.

Responding, chairman of the party, Ade Adetimehin, described Ogundare as a man with good intentions, saying that the defector was well-grounded in grassroots politics.

He said APC was lucky to have Ogundare in its fold, promising that the party would give him and his supporters the same level-playing ground with old members to execute his agenda.

The chairman asked Ogundare and his supporters to obey the party’s guidelines, saying that they should align with the party’s supremacy.

Adetimehin said with President Bola Tinubu as the leader of the party, every member of the party and all Nigerians would rejoice.

He however said that the union would continue to support organised labour’s demands on government to ameliorate the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.

The NURTW president also stressed the need for state governments, particularly South West Governors, to reconsider replacing NURTW with Parks and Garage Management Committees (PGMC).

He maintained that the Union remained the only registered umbrella trade union for commercial drivers in Nigeria.

“We want to therefore, make it categorically clear, that parks and garages management committee is not a trade union known by any labour law in Nigeria.

“Their activities are not only illegal but also a usurpation of the Union (NURTW) functions.

“Members of the Union in the South west are hereby advised to embrace the NURTW which is the only registered and recognised umbrella trade union for all commercial drivers in Nigeria.

“We equally call on well-meaning people of the south west to intervene and advise those state governments that have replaced NURTW with PGMC, to have a rethink.

“We call on them to allow the operations of the Union in their various motor parks and garages just like it is being done in other parts of the country,” he said.

Baruwa reiterated the commitment to the welfare of the union members, adding that the leadership had initiated 100 per cent increase in staff salaries and general promotion of staff aimed at motivating them.

A Manufacturer, Mr Christopher Enemuo, says the policy on unified exchange rate and independent power generation has solved about 45 percent of the problems facing manufacturers in Nigeria.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Awka that the signing of the policies by President Bola Tinubu were steps toward meeting the needed targets.

Enemuo, however, said there was need to do more as Nigeria required more than unified exchange rate and independent power generation to move from a consuming to a producing nation.

“The unification of exchange rates and the independent power generation policies are two aspects propelled toward relieving about 45 per cent of manufacturers problems.

“Manufacturers need to be in a position of advantage in the course of their activities and there is need for direct partnership between production industries and the government,” he said.

Enemuo urged the government to consider and ensure quick issuance of necessary documents such as licences and Certificate of Occupancy for manufacturers.

He also called for health insurance for eligible manufacturers and direct access to government-subsidised funds, facilities and benefits.

“Other issues to be considered are judicial adjudication where a manufacturer is involved and fast tracking the clearing of industrial equipment and materials at the ports and berths.

“There is need for the Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Bank of Industries to meet the financial needs of the manufacturers too, ” he said.

Enemuo said these will help Nigeria move from a consumption to production nation; “and there will be employment creation and economic growth,” he said. (NAN)
