‘Don’t have kids If you are not ready to train them’ – Nonye Soludo

Wife of Anambra Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo has blamed the high rate of societal ills and vices on family negligence and lack of parental care.

She spoke in Awka during the 2023 International Day of Families organised by the Anambra Ministry of Health in collaboration with the State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.

She said: “Due to lack of parental care, children engage in robbery, cultism, drug addiction, exam fraud, hooliganism, thuggery, gambling, smoking, rape and other crimes.

“We need to put our families first and prioritise the upbringing of our children. Family is everything and the betterment of society starts with the family.

Mrs. Soludo expressed displeasure with parents who give out their children as house helps and guardians who maltreat or abuse children.

She said: “It is sad that parents shy away from their responsibilities and give out their children to strangers who maltreat and abuse these children.

“If you are not ready to train children, do not have any or you give birth to the number of children you can cater for and bring them up to be responsible men and women in the society. I also urge our women to stop maltreating and abusing their house helps”.

First Ladies deserve some privileges- Aisha Buhari

Outgoing First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has said that privileges such as the provision of vehicles, sponsored medical treatments and provision of some stipends, among others accorded former Presidents should also be extended to their wives.

Aisha Buhari made the call when she spoke at the launching of a book in Abuja authored by the President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Vickie Anwuli Irabor.

Explaining why the privileges should be extended to first ladies, Mrs. Buhari said:: “I married my husband as the wife of a former president. I am going in a few days as a wife of a former president a second time.

” They should consider us as former first ladies. They should incorporate the first ladies, give us some privileges that we deserve as first ladies, not just the former presidents”.

  • SGF: Akume a square peg in a square hole

SGF: Akume a square peg in a square hole

    • By Comrade Daniel Onjeh

A key factor that sets leaderships apart is the capacity to effectively formulate, harmonize, implement, monitor and evaluate policies and programmes. Therefore, merit must constitute the overriding yardstick for the appointment of a Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) by any federal government. In order for the incoming administration of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to takeoff with the right momentum and maintain a steady course, it must accord priority attention to the character, personality, experience and disposition of the next SGF. That’s where Sen. (Dr.) George Akume comes into the picture.

Arguably the foremost political titan from the core Middle Belt Region (you may call it the North Central Region) today, Sen. Akume, the current Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties, is from every logical perspective the best primed person to man the rarefied Office of the SGF in the coming political dispensation. This is even more so as the APC, in its unassailable wisdom, had decidedly zoned the position of the SGF to the North Central.

Although Sen. Akume needs no introduction, I’ll suffice to state that he is a quintessential public servant, a core grassroots politician and perfect gentleman. He served as Governor of Benue State between 1999 and 2007, making history as the first Governor of the ‘Food Basket State’ to successfully complete two consecutive tenures in office. He subsequently served as a Senator of the Federal Republic representing Benue North-West Senatorial District, from 2007 to 2019. In July 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Sen. Akume to serve in his cabinet, following which he was assigned to captain the Federal Ministry of Intergovernmental Affairs and Special Duties, a position he holds till date.

Indeed, the Office of the SGF is the omnibus of the federal government; saddled with a plethora of humongous functions. The SGF is the Number One Bureaucrat of the Federal Republic, as his office is the frontline advisory institution to the Presidency.  The Office of the SGF also drives policy formulation, harmonization, implementation and monitoring of the various Federal Ministries, Department and Agencies. In addition, scores of sensitive federal parastatals are domiciled in the Office of the SGF, making it the rallying point for any federal administration in Nigeria.

Consequently, the ideal SGF must be a person of immense wisdom, sound judgment, versatility and commendable wealth of experience in governance, administration and public service. He must be visionary, exceptionally diligent and fully committed to the success of the administration; while possessing imitable patience, tolerance and a keen eye for details. The SGF must always exude positive energy, passion and grace; and be an adherent of inclusive leadership. Of course, effective communication is another key quality of an efficient SGF, and Sen. Akume is the embodiment of all these aforementioned attributes and more.

I recall, when I was elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in 2002, Sen. Akume was the first Nigerian Governor to host me and my set of NANS executives. The occasion enabled me to truly appreciate his sterling leadership qualities and depth of knowledge. His advices to me then still remain cardinal pillars of my social and political growth. Sometimes, I still hear him telling me in his soft-toned voice, “Onjeh, you can disarm your greatest enemy with humility.” Sen. Akume has raised and empowered countless young leaders from Benue State, both politically and economically. He has equally mentored many youths to rise to political prominence, and he is obviously not done yet.

Sen. Akume relates effortlessly with; and appeals to people of all gender, ages, classes, tribes, religions and political divides. His political, social and economic tentacles are large and strong enough to attract and sustain the needed goodwill of the vast majority of Nigerians for the Tinubu Administration. Compared to his years of meritorious public service and the exalted positions he has held, Sen. Akume may not seem to have accumulated much mundane wealth, but a lot of us will testify that his kindness and generosity is evident in the lives of countless citizens of Benue State.

I boldly state that no politician of the old Middle Belt extraction has made the degree of sacrifice that Sen. Akume has made towards building the APC. Since he left the PDP for APC in 2010, he has been met with much frustration, yet, his steadfastness helped to sustain the structures of the APC for several years as an opposition party in Benue State. Akume has paid the last ounce of his dues in Nigerian politics, and mostly to the APC. He remains the undeniable rallying point for the opposition in Benue State. Ever accessible to the people, Sen. Akume is firmly and constantly in touch with the grassroots. He listens intently, and as much as possible, attends to the problems of his people.

Born in 1953, Sen. Akume is a native of Wannune in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State. He bagged a B.Sc. in Sociology from Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan, in 1978; and M.Sc. in Industrial and Labour Relations from the same institution in 1986. He was listed as a Member of the Great Tedder Hall of Fame at the University of Ibadan. Akume further bagged a Certificate in Management from the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, (ASCON) in 1988.

Sen. Akume is a consummate civil servant. After his mandatory NYSC programme in the 1978-1979 service year, during which he taught at the Advanced Teachers College, Jos, Plateau State (now College of Education, AKwanga, Nasarawa State), Sen. Akume commenced work formally as a Land Officer with the Benue State Civil Service, and rose steadily through the ranks in the public service until 1998, when he voluntarily retired as the Permanent Secretary (Establishments and Management Services) at the Federal Ministry of Education, Lagos State. In the course of his exemplary career, Sen. Akume served as Principal Secretary; Under Secretary and Director of Personnel Management at the Benue State Governor’s Office. He was also a Sole Administrator of Idah Local Government Council (currently in Kogi State); and Sole Administrator of Gboko Local Government Council in 1991. He was later appointed Director of Protocol, Government House, Makurdi, in 1992.

There’s no gainsay that Sen. Akume has been an unrepentant loyalist of the President-Elect, Asiwaju Tinubu. In the build-up to the APC 2023 Presidential Primary Election, he made it abundantly clear to all Benue people, where he stood. He never dilly-dallied on his support for a Tinubu Presidency, and he gallantly led Benue people into a resounding victory at the 2023 presidential poll, delivering Benue overwhelmingly to the APC.

A Catholic Knight of the finest hue, Sen. Akume has been to several countries including the USA, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Columbia, Japan, Taiwan, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Mexico, Switzerland, Jamaica, Cuba and Thailand, to mention but a few. He is a recipient of the key to the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.

It is with immense pride that I present Sen. (Dr.) George Akume; the munificent servant leader, bridge-builder and undoubtedly best choice for the next SGF.

  • I knew nothing about education sector when I became Minister – Adamu

I knew nothing about education sector when I became Minister – Adamu

Minister of Education Adamu Adamu has admitted he had no knowledge of the sector when President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him.

The Minister said what he had before he became a Minister was a “superficial” knowledge of the sector.

Adamu, the longest-serving education Minister spoke on Thursday during a valedictory service in his honour where he received accolades from members of staff of the ministry.

Adamu was appointed by Buhari in 2015 and served as minister of education for 91 months.

The Minister said to make up for his lack of knowledge of the sector, he consulted professors of education who assisted him in putting a roadmap together for the sector.

In 2016, Adamu unveiled the “Education for Change: A Ministerial Strategic Plan (MSP)” document for the country’s education sector.

The roadmap was expected to serve as a blueprint or a pill capable of curing most of the ailments currently affecting the sector, and provided immediate short and long-term solutions.

The Minister said: “I didn’t know anything about education except superficially. When Buhari decided to make me Minister of Education, there is somebody here sitting and looking at me; he was the first person I called. He said ‘what do you want to achieve?’ I said I want to achieve good things. And these are my ideas as a learner.

“After that meeting professors of education were called and I told them what I wanted to achieve and let them put it in writing for me and they (the professors) did. And then we had a document.”

During Adamu’s period as Minister, the sector witnessed lots of ups and downs.

Though his tenure witnessed the highest number of industrial strike actions from tertiary institutions-based unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union among others, the sector also witnessed the implementation of new policies, increase in the number of new institutions among others.

For instance, his tenure witnessed the implementation of a new retirement age for teachers.

It also witnessed the establishment of more public and private universities.

About 122 new universities were licensed by the National Universities Commission with some other colleges of education and polytechnics converted to universities.

  • Why I did not interfere in NASS affairs- Buhari

Why I did not interfere in NASS affairs- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said he refused to meddle in the affairs of the National Assembly for almost eight years because of his belief in the idea of an independent legislature.

He said he rather promoted a culture of mutual respect and collaboration between the two arms.

He said the positive outcomes in the country under his leadership are largely attributable to the harmonious working relationship between the Executive and the Legislature.

He described the 9th National Assembly as the most productive in terms of output and outcome in the last four years.

Buhari spoke after he commissioned the Permanent Site of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) – a training arm of the National Assembly – situated along the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Way (Airport Road), in Abuja.

Buhari said: “As you are aware, from the moment of my election in 2015 and subsequently, I supported the idea of an independent National Assembly, one that is able to decide its Leadership and develop its agenda in line with the manifesto of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“I refrained from meddling in the affairs of the legislature and promoted instead a culture of mutual respect and collaboration between the two arms.

“The numerous positive outcomes for our country Nigeria underscore the importance of a harmonious Executive-Legislature relationship.

“Working with the National Assembly, we have passed an unprecedented number of Bills into law, provided funding for key infrastructure, implemented several governmental reforms, and addressed some of the long-standing challenges that have hampered economic growth and development.

“Our achievements in reforming the oil and gas sector, strengthening the electoral framework, diversifying our economy, improving transparency and accountability, tackling insecurity and entrenching good governance are easily verifiable.

“As such, this 9th Assembly will be remembered as one of the most productive in terms of outputs and outcomes. Again, I thank the Leadership of the National Assembly for giving me the support required to deliver on my promises to Nigerians.”

The President said that the country is immensely endowed in many ways with the people as its single greatest asset.

  • Institute sets agenda for 10th NASS

Institute sets agenda for 10th NASS

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), has tasked the incoming 10th National Assembly to place Nigeria first its function of law-making, oversight and representation.
Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, the Director-General, NILDS, said this at a roundtable tagged “Roundtable Discussion on Agenda Setting for the 10th National Assembly”, on Thursday in Abuja. Sulaiman said that as the nation was transiting from the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to the Sen. Bola Tinubu’s administration, the national assembly was not excluded from the process. “The leadership of the national assembly will come up with a legislative agenda that would guide the activities of the red and green chambers in the next four years. “This roundtable provides an opportunity for harnessing views from invited persons and organisations.

“The views will serve as input to the Legislative Agenda of the 10th National Assembly,” he said.
Sulaiman said that the input from presentations and discussions will be harnessed and transmitted to the relevant committees and offices of the National Assembly for input in the agenda of the 10th NASS.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero called on the assembly to be guided by the Provisions of Section 14 of the Constitution.
Ajaero was represented by the Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, Mr Onyeka Chris.
He urged the national assembly to be guided by sub-section 1 and 2 which dealt with issues of underlying sovereignty and social justice.

“The Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a state based on the principles of Democracy and Social Justice.”

He, therefore, called for an independent legislature devoid of interference.

The Executive Director, LEAD Africa, Mr Yusuff Liadi, called for the implementation of the National Youth Policy.

“The National Youth Policy is a very brilliant policy. We are not feeling much effect of the policy. It is merely a document.

“We call on the national assembly to ensure the implementation of the policy,” he said.

The Director Programmes, ActionAid, Mrs Suwaiba Muhammad-Dankabo, said there should be a mechanism for feedbacks on every law passed.

She urged the parliament to ensure the functionality of local government councils as third tier of government.

The Director, Agency Banking, OPAY, Mr Abraham Enebe, decried the limited number of bank branches in the country, saying that bank branches could only be found in major cities.

He, however, said that Fintech was trying to ensure that financial services were made accessible to people across the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the country.

“We want to see a legislation around that gives our staff incentive or tax exclusion for those who are doing cash-in and cash-out.”

Earlier, Prof. Peter Siyan, the Acting Director, Economic and Social Research Department of NILDS, said that the forum was aimed at setting an agenda for the 10th Assembly to have a template.

“We are their tinking tank. Issues have been raised concerning labour; diaspora issues and our education system that has witnessed a lot strikes.

“It was sectoraly done,” he said.

Wike to Rivers: don’t expect Fubara to behave like me

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has told the people of Rivers State not to expect the incoming Governor, Siminialaye Fubara, to adopt his style in relating with them.

But the Governor insisted that with the support of the people, Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, would surpass his record of success.

Wike spoke at a public lecture and book presentation in his honour at Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

He urged Rivers people to understand no two persons are the same and should not expect the same level of relationship they experienced under his administration with the incoming government.

“Don’t compare that the way I relate with you should be the way the incoming administration must relate with you, no. We have different styles but what’s important is being able to deliver what will make out people to be happy,” he said.

The Governor attributed the success of his administration to the tremendous support from the leaders and people of Rivers.

Wike solicited support for his successor saying the failure of Fubara would rob off on all that made it possible to emerge as Governor.

He said: “I have that belief that the governor-elect and the deputy governor-elect will do very very well. He is somebody you can rely on. His yes is yes, that I can tell you.

“He is an accountant, they are very conservative. They don’t spend money anyhow. They spend the money where they know it will be useful. So, don’t rate us as the same. But he is a very good person.”

  • Northern youths beg G7-members to back Abbas as speaker

Northern youths beg G7-members to back Abbas as speaker

The Northern Youth Forum for Good Governance (NYDGG) has urged members of the G7 aspirants for Speaker of the House of Representatives to support the aspiration of Hon Tajudeen Abbas in the interest of the nation.

The group made this appeal at a briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

Its President Bilal Abdullahi admitted that it is well within the rights of the lawmakers to express displeasure over the choice of Abass for the Speaker.

He however said all hands must be on deck to deliver the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC) so the opposition doesn’t capitalise.

According to him: “The Northern Forum for Good Governance is also using this medium to reach out to members elect to support Hon Tajudeen Abass in his ambition. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most experienced hands in the House of Representatives.

“His contributions on the floor have been noteworthy, and his leadership of various committees under his purview has also been top-notch. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas is a bridge-builder who understands the strategic importance of the House of Representatives in the country’s socioeconomic development.

“Given that Hon Tajudeen Abass has the endorsement of the President-Elect, we wish to use this medium to appeal to the G7 and other members-elect to see the reason behind the choice of Hon Tajudeen Abass.

“The APC must stay united at the risk of allowing some dramatic outcomes during the elections of principal officers in the House of Representatives. The decision to endorse Hon Tajudeen Abbass is in the party’s best interest and not the fact that he is the most suitable candidate for the Speaker of the House of Representatives position.

“Hon. Tajudeen Abbas is a loyal party man whose penchant for teamwork is tremendous. He has been known for carrying everyone along, and we believe this much he will do if supported to emerge as Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

The group urged Abass to reach out to the G-7 and other members-elect to pacify them to work in the party’s interest.

“The country’s challenges are enormous, and the incoming administration’s mantra is renewed hope. This can only happen if the party stays united and pursues a common goal,” Abdullahi added.

“The G7 are respected members of the APC whose contribution to the growth and development of the party cannot be overemphasized. But again, the position of Speaker is meant for one person, and the party has a say in those elected as principal officers in the National Assembly.

“The Northern Forum for Good Governance urges the G7 and other members-elect to focus on the strength and capacity of Hon Tajudeen Abass rather than the fact that the party nominated him. In so doing, the G7 and other members would come to appreciate the party’s decision.

“There is the risk of giving the incoming administration a tough time settling down for the business at hand at this critical point of our existence. We are convinced that the G7 and other members elect are interested in the progress of the party and, as such, the need to sheath their swords and embrace peace,” it said.
