Researchers reject perspective violent herders are foreigners

Researchers on cross-border movement of herders between Nigeria and neighbouring countries have rejected a popular view that most of the herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria involve herders from other countries.

Such conflicts, which had been particularly deadly in Benue and Adamawa States were often attributed to herders from Chad or Niger Republic. But the researchers who presented their findings at a research validation seminar organised by the Centre for Peace and Security Studies of the Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, said it is Nigerian herders that actually migrate to other countries.

One of the researchers, Dr Adam Higazi of the University of Amsterdam who presented a research result on ‘Pastoral Mobility, Intergroup Relations and Peacebuilding in the Borderlands of Nigeria and Cameroon,’ during the research validation seminar, stressed that Nigeria produces the most migratory herders beteeen Nigeria on the one hand and Niger, Chad and Cameroon on the other.

Higazi, who conducted his research in affiliation to MAU Yola, said:  “Many pastoralists are crossing from Adamawa and Taraba particularly to Cameroon and are trying to reach the Central Africa Republic but some stop in Cameroon.

“We did not find much movement of herders from Cameroon or Central Africa Republic to Nigeria. It is really going much more in the other direction. Similarly, we found some return movement of some pastoralists who had left Nigeria.”

In her own evaluation of the herder-farmer conflict issue, Dr Janet Muhammed, who is the West Africa Programme director of Conciliation Resources, an international peacebuilding organisation with headquarters in London, said by way of solution that for Nigeria to resolve herder-farmer conflicts, it must look beyond the herders to factors, including inadequate grazing reserves, that encourage conflict.

The Director of MAU’s Centre for Peace and Security Studies, Prof Jude Momodu, said the research on herd movement and herder-farmer conflicts is an eye opener to policy makers on how herders and farmers can co-exist harmoniously.

UNICEF training empowers Adamawa schoolgirls, improves attendance

Grooming sessions by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for schoolchildren and their teachers in Adamawa State have empowered schoolgirls economically and raised their class attendance levels.

The teachers and children stated this and registered their appreciation during a field visitation by UNICEF officials and journalists to some schools in Jada and Guyuk local government areas.

The training programme, funded by the Netherlands Directorate-General for International Cooperation-Accelerated Sanitation and Water for All programme ll (DGIS-ASWA II) in conjunction with UNICEF, impacted knowledge on male and female schoolchildren on personal hygiene.

Female children particularly received grooming  on handling menstruation during school hours and even at home, and  testimonies of the children indicated that the training changed false negative and primitive beliefs on menstruation.

“Following the training, we girls are making money from new entrepreneurship. We make reusable menstrual pads locally, which is cheaper and can be reused for up to six months,” a pupil, Aisha Suleiman said.

She added that local pad making had addressed the challenges of skipping classes due to menstrual flow that she preciousely had no money to buy manufactured pads for.

During a field visit to Tsohon Tikke Primary school, one of the schools which benefitted from the training by UNICEF,
the head teacher, Musa Umar said what used to be in the dark and kept people in ignorance has been brought to the open courtesy of the training as issues surrounding menstruation were freely discussed and long nursed doubts cleared.

“I initially could not see myself, a Fulani man, discussing such issue with my students, but the training has enabled a seamless relationship between the parents, teachers and the students and everyone is the better for it,” Musa said.

The Coordinator of WASH in Jada Local Government Area, Obadia David, said 60 children 13 to 17 years old across 20 schools in the area were impacted and are expected to spread their knowledge to their peers.

  • The inculcation of unity and love in our interplay as a religious nation

The inculcation of unity and love in our interplay as a religious nation

    By Oluwadara Akingbohungbe

The 19th Century German Philosopher Karl Marx believed that religion helped to preserve the existing class structure. According to Marx, religious beliefs serve to justify the existing, unequal social order and prevent social change by making a virtue out of poverty and suffering.

He opined that religion is the soul of souless conditions or the opium of the people.

The above implies that religion navigate the social order of Man.

Religion is analgesic to the condition of Man within a state.

According to the Holy book of Christians which serves as the tool of daily living for the Christians, the followers Of Jesus Christ Of Nazareth, it was stated according to  Genesis 1:26

Gen.1.26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

In other words, the original purpose of God creating Man was to Dominate his world, but as a result of the fall of man, Man started finding a way of pleasing God and reaching out to God.

According to the Holy Books, it was believed that God has been sending his Prophet (Messenger) Moses, Jesus Christ, Muhammad (SAW) as believed by the two dominant religion (Christianity and Islam) in Nigeria and in the World to restore Man to himself (God).

The question is why is Man using religion (the believe and worship of  a supernatural being by Man, rather a way of searching for the true God)  as a tool of disunity when God himself projected himself as the mastermind behind the creation of Man.

Every human being on earth is the creation of God.

According to the Holy Books we are made to understand that Love is the greatest.

The Holy Book of Christians, The Holy Bible stated that God is Love. according to 1John 4:8

1 John.4.8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Muslims also believes that God is so loving that He recreated His attribute of love as an instinct in us. Hence true love is part of God’s love, and it is our duty to love one another truly, as indeed He loves us. Without Divine Love there can be no human love.

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. [2:195]

Every religion claims to believe in God.

    Verse 43 from surah Al-Furqan

    ﴿أَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ أَفَأَنتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلًا﴾

    [ الفرقان: 43]

    English – Sahih International

Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?

But the reality is that any Man’s formation that promote hatred, disunity, derogatory statement against man, Man’s inhumanity to Man does not believe and worship the true God.

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.

    (Surah Al-Ma’ida, Quran 5:2)

The use of religion as a means of division between state operation is a way of sidelining the establishment of God Almighty. Man was the first establishment of God in his continuance of Dominion on earth.

The truth is that for Man to be emancipated from eternal damnation, which both Christians and Muslims believe is going to the lake of Fire at the  life hereafter is to be convinced in our  heart that we are on the right track to Heaven.

Prov.23.23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Aside from what is being said by clerics, there needs to be proper conviction in the heart of every true worshippers of God that we are on the right track to eternal Peace and Joy.

Faith is fake if it is void of proofs – Bishop David Oyedepo.

As this serves as the time of reflection to God and Peace to our Nation and the world as a whole we need to think deep and support one another.

God first in our dealing and Man’s needs in our services.

Everton keep survival hopes alive with 99th minute equalizer

Everton’s fight to avoid the drop into the Championship will go down to the final day of the season despite Yerry Mina snatching a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time at Wolves.

The Toffees looked on course for a damaging defeat until Mina pounced in a goalmouth scramble in the final seconds of nine minutes of additional time to give Sean Dyche’s side what might prove to be a priceless point.

Everton must now anxiously await how other results pan out to discover the full extent of their task when they face Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Wolves went ahead in a scrappy encounter after 34 minutes when Hwang Hee-Chan scored from a rebound after Everton keeper Jordan Pickford had pushed out Adama Traore’s shot.

Everton’s best opportunities came with two first-half headers from Dominic Calvert-Lewin but they suffered a severe blow when the injury-plagued striker was forced to limp off with his latest problem on the stroke of half-time.

It now rests on that crucial clash with Bournemouth as Everton attempt to avoid their first relegation from the top tier since 1951 but this may yet be the point that helps to maintain their Premier League status.

Casemiro stunner leaves Man Utd on brink of top-four

Casemiro’s stunning overhead kick edged Manchester United a step closer to a top-four finish as they secured a narrow Premier League victory over Bournemouth.

The Red Devils need just one point from their final two games against Chelsea and Fulham to secure Champions League football at Old Trafford next season.

In a game lacking in clear-cut opportunities a piece of magic from Casemiro proved the difference at the Vitality Stadium.

The Brazilian midfielder picked up a beautifully weighted pass from Christian Eriksen and turned away from Marcos Senesi to acrobatically hammer home.

Without their top goal scorer this season, Marcus Rashford, who was absent from the squad with illness and missed the opportunity to equal his best tally of 17 goals in a single campaign, United struggled to mount regular goal threats.

But Casemiro’s ninth-minute strike, combined with Liverpool’s draw against Aston Villa, were enough to move United one point away from guaranteeing a top-four spot.

Firmino equalizer keeps Liverpools’ hopes of top-four alive

Roberto Firmino scored an 89th-minute equaliser to salvage a draw against Aston Villa and keep alive Liverpool’s faint hopes of a top-four Premier League finish.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are three points behind Newcastle United and Manchester United with one game remaining, meaning their two rivals need just one point from their final two games to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

The fact it remains mathematically possible, if perhaps unlikely, is down to the departing Firmino sneaking in at the near post to convert Mohamed Salah’s low cross.

The visitors will be disappointed not to have claimed all three points after an impressive display.

Liverpool – with Klopp watching from the stands as he begins his touchline ban – improved thereafter and thought they had equalised when Cody Gakpo converted following a scramble, but the effort was ruled out for offside in the build-up.
