Kalu best option for Deputy Speaker, says group

The South East Youths for Democracy (SEYD) has thrown its weight behind the Deputy Speakership position zoned by the National Working Committee(NWC) of the All Prohressives Congress(APC) to the Southeast.

The group said rejecting such position may exclude the region from the leadership of the 10th National Assembly and advised Ndigbo to allow Benjamin Kalu to occupy the position as he remains the best option for the Southeast.

It said: “The capacity which Hon. Benjamin Kalu has shown in the current House of Representatives with number  of motions and bills he has passed, the highest in the entire Southeast with 20 motions and 43 bills to his name and three  assented to by Mr President, he remains the best option for the Southeast.

The group, in a statement by the coordinator, Comrade Fabulous Wisdom, said  Kalu remains the brightest Southeast could offer for the position.

He noted that the SEYD, leaning on patriotic zeal to protect the region from the negative image of divisiveness in purpose and absence of a united front, deems it necessary to make interventions for the sake of posterity.

    The statement reads: “it will amount to a political harakiri for the Southeast zone to be excluded from the leadership of the 10th National Assembly;

    “That the Southeast having a plethora of qualified sons and daughters at the House of Representatives especially those of the APC extraction, which is the ruling party at the centre, is only natural that one person be projected to occupy the seat of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives which is the post zoned by the National Working Committee of the ruling party;

“The capacity of Hon Kalu shows in the number of bills which he has to his credit, the highest in the entire Southeast with 43 to his name and 3 assented to by Mr President. On motions on national issues of importance, he ranks the highest with 22 to his name.”

He said Kalu has defended the House well and projected the image of the Igbo man better.  “He is a better and acceptable option for the Igbo even beyond the shores of this country.”

Take-off of LAUTECH Iseyin campus sacrosanct – Olaniyan

The Chairman ad-hoc committee of the Iseyin community on the establishment of the College of Agricultural Science and Renewable Natural Resources of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) Hon. Waheed Olaniyan has said the take-off of the college as pronounced by Oyo Governor of Oyo State, Engr.Seyi Makinde is sacrosanct.

Olaniyan noted that people of Iseyin and Oke-Ogun have been grateful to the Governor for establishing the college in the community, saying the gesture would improve the socio-economic outlook of the region.

Speaking at the Iseyin-Okeho road during the handover of land for the construction of 250-seater capacity Information and Communication Technology (ICT) center to a special team from the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) and the contractor of the project, the former legislator said planned protest by some people in Ogbomoso against the establishment of the campus was in bad taste as LAUTECH belonged to all the communities that make up Oyo State and not Ogbomoso alone.

A jingle was released over the weekend by a particular group from Ogbomoso, calling on all the indigenes of the community to join a protest against the establishment of the new campus of LAUTECH at Iseyin.

Olaniyan thanked the Chairman, Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Prof. Adeolu Akande for deeming it fit to construct the 250-seater ICT center for the new campus, saying it was an indication that the college would be commencing academic works with ease with the ICT centre in place.

“We appreciate our amiable Governor for the establishment of this campus and the gesture has really gotten the appreciation of the people of Iseyin with their votes for his second term, we are grateful, we heard that some people are planning to protest on Monday at Ogbomoso against the take-off of the campus, this is in bad taste, the Ogbomoso people have been partners in the progress of Oyo State with us over time, why are they creating this divisive tendencies now?

“When we look at it closely, LAUTECH is a university owned by Oyo State and not Ogbomoso, every community in the State has a stake in the institution and the establishment of a college of the university in Iseyin will boost its development and help the State achieve its set goals in using education to broaden human development,” he added.

The Contractor for the construction of the 250-seater ICT center, Still Earth Holdings, represented by its Head, Business Development and Intergovernmental Relations, Oladipo Oshodi promised that the project will be delivered within the next twelve months as mandated by NCC.

He said the college should expect a quality job that will stand the test of time and benefit students, management of the institution and the entire community.

  • 11,350 teachers take professional qualifying exam

11,350 teachers take professional qualifying exam

About 11,350 candidates on Saturday participated in the first batch of the teachers Professional Qualifying Examination ( PQE) organised by the Teachers Registration Council across the country.

Registrar of TRCN, Prof Josiah Ajiboye, who announced this while monitoring the exercise at Sascon International School Maitama, Abuja, said reports from across the country showed that the exam went on smoothly.

Ajiboye, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo, said Lagos State had the highest registered candidates for the examination with over 1,500 entrants, followed by Kano State and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The TRCN boss noted that Kebbi State had the lowest participants in the exercise, stating that the exercise, however, recorded tremendous improvement in terms of participation and the accreditation process.

He said: “Well, generally, all over the country, we have about 11,350 candidates who are writing the exam, with Lagos State having the highest with 1500 plus candidates, followed by Kano State and FCT Abuja; then you have a state like Kebbi with the lowest number of candidates for the examination.

“There has been a lot of improvement with regards to even the accreditation procedure, because part of what we did was to develop an app to be able to accredit candidates; and this is working perfectly well.

“We’re able to check your name, your passport photograph will also appear and everything like that, so we know that the people that are writing the exam are those who actually applied; so, it’s been going on smoothly.”

He said the examination, which is conducted in all the states of the federation, started on Wednesday and was concluded in some states on Friday.

Ajiboye commended the candidates for displaying better comportment, adding that their conduct “shows that there is maturity and the people are now realising that this is a serious examination.”

Speaking on the Federal Government’s effort to weed out unqualified teachers, he said one of the major processes of weeding out quacks in the teaching profession was the PQE as it was now obvious that nobody could get the TRCN license without passing a provisional qualifying examination.

He added: “Even if you’re a professor in the university, you just have to write this examination before you can get the certificate and the license. So, part of the process for weeding out this quackery in the profession is what we are on. And another thing that we are doing in that regard is also school monitoring. You will recall that in February 2020, we started the school monitoring programme. two boards.

“Monitoring is a continuous exercise. So, we are still on, we will not relent. And we have also processes for checking our certificates, the authenticity of those certificates. We have certain features in our certificates and the license that actually will enable us to know whether it’s really a fake one or a genuine one. So, we are on top of it.”

Adejo commened TRCN for the improvement in the accreditation process for the examination.

“This year, documentation has a double level; first, you identify yourself, fill the form, then you also cross check your sleep with an app that was developed to give it authenticity. So, I think they are improving on an incremental basis every year in the process for the professional qualification exam for teachers,” he said.

The permanent secretary restated the federal government’s position that before you can be a teacher in any school, you must meet a basic minimum requirement and that is what the Teachers Registration Council is doing.

He added that as a result of efforts being made by TRCN, the level of quackery at the junior and senior secondary school levels is reducing.

He said the government was still working on cleaning the database of qualified teachers at early childhood and primary school level.

One of the candidates, Mrs Titilope Yunusa, said she was sitting the exams for the second time as she could not make it in her first sitting, stating that she does not want to fail this time around.

“I experienced difficulties in my first attempt because I don’t really know how to operate the computer, but now I have learnt and can operate it; that is why I am here to take the examination again, and I am confident of making a good result,” she said.

  • Why US Secretary of States Blinken called Tinubu, by Onoh

Why US Secretary of States Blinken called Tinubu, by Onoh

President-elect, Bola Tinubu’s spokesman in the south east, Dr. Josef Onoh, has asked the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) February 25 poll, Peter Obi to diligently verify the 110 reason the United States of America, US Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken called Tinubu on the telephone.

Peter Obi had said that there was lack of clarity on the basis Blinken called Tinubu last Tuesday.

Onoh clarified Obi to the LP candidate that he was a third runner-up of the presidential elections and his lack of clarity was his  personal lack of acceptance of reality while in pursuit of an indiana Jones adventurous expedition.

Onoh however said that unlike Indiana Jones, Obi will not go home with an Oscar Award for his ongoing lawsuit.

Responding further, Onoh said: “It’s difficult to conceive how a candidate that came third in an election decided to dump clarity in acceptance of the truth and claims he won the elections by just 98 percent of votes garnered from five southeast states, then turns around to force Nigerians to dump clarity and proclaim him the president.

“Where is the clarity when living in self denial same Peter Obi wants to force Nigerians that they must accept him as the winner against the clear votes cast, he played ethnic and religious politics, created an online political militia with a trademark of bullying and threatening anyone with divergent views; he created a so called obidient movement with adrenaline fussed penchant for disobedience.

“He refused to accept clarity of criminality and terrorist activities in the southeast which has brought pain and sorrow to all in the south east.

“After failed attempts to bring the legitimate will of the Nigerian people to disrepute by himself, a certain female literal associate and not limited to a foreign psychologist who’s actions were more of a patient rather than a counsellor.

“Out of frustration he now attempts to accuse the Americans government for not giving legitimacy to his delusional wild goose chase. May I humbly clarity to H.E. Peter Obi (3rd runner-up of the concluded Nigeria presidential election) the basic diplomatic protocol of  the U.S. Secretary of State,  Antony J.  Blinken’s call to our president-elect.

“Peter Obi being versatile in the area of verification failed to verify and clarify that the United States established diplomatic relations with Nigeria in 1960, following Nigeria’s independence from the United Kingdom. Following the 1999 inauguration of a civilian president, the U.S-Nigerian relationship began to improve, as did cooperation on foreign policy goals such as regional peacekeeping.

“In April 2021, the same  U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinkens who he now accused of lack of clarity conducted a virtual visit to Nigeria, participating in meetings with President Buhari and participating in a health partnership event, highlighting the United States’ commitment to assisting Nigeria in combatting infectious diseases and advancing global health security.

“Hence the call to the President-elect is aimed at sustaining the progress made so far which has benefited Nigerians including Peter Obi and will be sustained by the incoming administration in fulfilment of our mandate with Nigerians and to the greater good of Nigeria.

“The call was made to the President-elect to the displeasure of Peter Obi who rather than accept the clarity that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be our president in few days wishing such call would have been him, failed to understand that Nigeria is an important U.S. security partner in Africa.

“Nigeria is engaged in intensive efforts to defeat terrorist organizations within its borders, including Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa and IPOB. Nigeria is a vital member of the Defeat ISIS (D-ISIS) coalition and in October 2020, Nigeria co-hosted a virtual D-ISIS conference with the United States. Hence as president-lect it’s import the U.S ensures that such cooperation is sustained as the sad events going on in Anambra state which Obi was governor and hails from is in dare need of improved security which Peter Obi failed to checkmate as governor while enjoying the security foundation Asiwaju laid in lagos as Governor and sustained by subsequent administrations.

“It’s a fact that the United States is the largest foreign investor in Nigeria, with U.S. foreign direct investment concentrated largely in the petroleum/mining and wholesale trade sectors. At $3.2 billion in 2019, Nigeria is the second largest U.S. export destination in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The United States and Nigeria have a bilateral commercial investment dialogue, led by the Department of Commerce, and was last convened at the ministerial level in February 2020. In 2019, the two-way trade in goods between the United States and Nigeria totaled over $10 billion.

Out of 52 countries that invested in Nigeria, the United States emerged with a capital investment in 2022  to the tune of $286.92 million US dollars.

Hence the importance of such a call to our President-elect and weather you like it or not, your president come May 29th.

“In denial of clarity I wish to remind Peter Obi that Nigeria and the United States belong to a number of the same international organizations, including the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization. Nigeria also is an observer to the Organization of American States. Clearly this is beyond Peter Obi’s Obident movement’s comprehension and understanding.

“The call to the President-elect which obviously has rattled Peter Obi whereas he intentionally misrepresent to mean in his current traumatised mind as political interference by the U.S is rather nothing more than one of the strategic communications tools. The United States applies in advance partner capacities to refute disinformation and mitigate incitement to violence and malign propaganda through digital and conventional media. The United States will highlight that the United States is a force for good, while reinforcing the voices of local, national, and global partners to promote peace, respect for human rights, and social cohesion. Hence the sustained social media inciting Comments and call for anarchy, end inec, end Nigeria, stop the presidential inauguration, kill APC supporters by the Peter Obi led obidient online militia made such call by the US secretary of state inevitable.

“The United States will monitor and seek to counter transnational influence and messaging operations that promote violence or division or otherwise destabilize priority countries. Clearly Peter Obi and his obidient movement has continously promoted anything that will distabilze the country ever since he lost the election. Hence the reason for the call as it’s obvious that with a mindset and disinformation promoted by Peter Obi and his obidient movement their aim is to distabilze Nigeria after all failed delusional attempts by himself and his Obident social media militia to truncate democracy failed.

“They now want to resort to cheap blackmail of the United States government, but sadly the call to our  President-elect is a clear sign that the United States have chosen stability and promotion of democracy above one man’s delusional wishful thinking to use his court case to hold a nation at standstill if not hostage.

“Nigerians have spoken and we have elected Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as our president. The world and all other activities won’t be paused because of your court case. May I also warn H.E. Peter Obi that their is a limit to human endurance and also a limit to political rascality by himself, his Obident social media militia as no nation can fold it’s hands and encourage an act of wishful thinking to distabilise or threaten the sovereignty and peace of Nigeria and after may 29th, all political gimmicks and inciting Comments capable of causing instability in our nation won’t be tolerated and the limits of rascality shouldn’t dare the resolve of our security agencies and ally countries in ensuring that Nigeria’s stability and democracy is respected and protected at all cost.

“I therefore advice he allows the ongoing legal process take it’s cause rather than hiding under the shadows of his gangster social media militia the obidients to continuously spread inciting, inflammatory disinformation with a sole aim of distabilising our fragile democracy simply because Peter Obi believes if he can’t be President then Nigeria should burn. If you still live in self denial, you’re free to ask your Daddy or better still, GO and Verify!”

“You will make Nigeria to be proud of her worth again and this will turn the heart of Nigerians to love you despite the former hate displayed by some Nigerians against your noble personality.

“The swearing in on May 29, 2023 shall be successful. There shall be a major legal challenge and other threats to your leadership, but it shall not be long and it will be over.

“You are going to survive your first term in office with a very much good report in the midst of several technical attacks against your government, but it will not change anything.

“God is going to make good name through your leadership and beyond. There will be some crises in the area of focus, but let it not distract your goal and target knowing that there’s nothing like having a good name in the sand of time.

“Good hearted people are praying for you across Nigeria even if they can’t speak loud to your hearing. Don’t reply those who throw hate speech at you openly no matter what.

“You will live long as you continue to do good as you have been doing. Also learn not to encourage anything that could produce a brutal or harsh society in the nearest future. God bless you and keep you as you journey through the will of God for Nigerians”.

Why passport racketeering reduced in Lagos, by Aregbesola

The Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola at the weekend explained why racketeering of international passports reduced in Lagos.

Aregbesola said the measures adopted helped to reduce congestion and over-stretched of existing facilities.

According to him the creation of additional passports centres in Ikoyi-Festac,  Alausa and Amuwo Odofin substantially reduced passports racketeering.

He however lamented that despite the measures, some Nigerians preferred to follow illegal routes to obtain the documents.

He explained in a statement by the Director of Press in the Ministry, Afonja Ajibola, that his knowledge of and use of statistical data tremendously helped him as an active player at different levels of administration in life.

The Minister regretted that given government intervention in passports issuance, it was unfortunate that many who do not want to follow laid down rules and procedures still land in the hands of unscrupulous people who extort money from them.

” I find statistics useful and result- oriented; and I commend it to industrialists, entrepreneurs, politicians, leaders of communities, Local Governments, States and nations.

Tinubu mourns ‘giant among men’ Subomi Balogun

The President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has described founder of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Otunba Subomi Balogun as a giant among men for his trailblazing and pioneering role in investment banking in Nigeria.

The consummate banker, boardroom guru, and philanthropist, renowned for his royal and sartorial elegance, died in London on Friday, May 19, according to the family.

Eulogising the late banker in a condolence message by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, the President-elect said his death would create a vacuum that will be difficult to fill in the banking industry and among his Ijebu people where he was a symbol of unity and traditional values, and among Christians in Nigeria.

He said: “Otunba Subomi Balogun achieved what many considered impossible when he pioneered investment banking in Nigeria and through his dedication, vision, industry and commitment to excellence, the late banking genius changed the financial services sector of the economy and became an example to generations of investment bankers.

“The news of the death of Otunba Subomi Michael Balogun in London yesterday was indeed a sad one. Even though he lived to the advanced age of 89, we didn’t expect that he would leave us at this time.

“Otunba Subomi Balogun lived a life full of many accomplishments and for this, we are grateful to God. He was a giant among men who changed the course of history and lived life on his terms as a reputable investment banker. He blazed the trail for others to follow.

“From a lawyer who joined the Western Region Ministry of Justice and later as Parliamentary Counsel at the Federal Ministry of Justice, he moved to Nigerian Industrial Development Bank to start a banking career that blossomed into pioneering merchant banking in our country. What started as First City Merchant Bank in 1979 transformed into First City Monument Bank, one of the most admired banks in Nigeria today.

“While we mourn the exit of this great man of purpose, we cherish and celebrate his great achievements, his philanthropy and the many lives he positively impacted. We appreciate and commend his huge contributions to the growth and development of our country.

“I commiserate with the immediate family of this illustrious son of Nigeria, Governor Dapo Abiodun, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, the government and people of Ogun State and the entire Christian community in Ijebuland.

“May God grant Otunba Subomi Balogun eternal rest.”
