The court presided over by Justice Haruna Tsammani refused to recognise any representative of the Labour Party except the 1st petitioner, Peter Obi, who was in court.

Justice Haruna reached the decision having been possibly intimated that there was a disagreement between two factions of the party before the court resumed proceedings.

When the matter was called, Obi stood up to announce his appearance followed by Dudu Manuga, the National Women’s Leader of the Party who sat close to Obi.

It all began when Lamidi Apapa, factional chairman of the party, walked into the court premises alongside some of his supporters.

He made attempted to sit where Labour Party officials were and a shouting match ensued.

As the argument continued, Apapa raised his voice, saying, “Get up, you cannot sit down here!”

Secretary of the Presidential election court, Josephine Ekperobe, quickly moved in to ensue normalcy.

Later when the Labour Party matter was called, Obi and the party’s Women Leader, Dudu Manoga, introduced themselves on the record of the court.

But when Apapa stood up to introduce himself as the National Chairman, the presiding justice of the court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, requested him to stop the introduction as the court would not recognise the ‘National Chairman’ on record.

Abure, who sat next to Obi, did not, however, attempt to introduce himself.

Court admits Bauchi cleric to N1m bail

A Chief Magistrates’ Court 1 sitting in Bauchi, on Tuesday, admitted a Bauchi-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Idris Abdulaziz, to N1 million bail bond with three sureties.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abdulaziz was arraigned before the court on Monday by the Police on one-count charge of public disturbance and inciting public unrest.

The court held that considering the status of the renowned scholar, one of the sureties must be his District Head, and the second surety must be a Permanent Secretary with the Bauchi state Government, who is to provide Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property values not less than N5 million.

It added that the third surety should be a religious scholar, who must be the defendant’s colleague.

The court also orderd the defendant and the sureties to submit their recent passport photographs and other means of identifications.

Chief Magistrate Abdulfatah Sekoni, while ruling on the bail application, said the court did not obtained the full facts surrounding the case when it was first brought before it, hence the dependent remand at a correctional facility, to enable it to study the First Information Report (FIR) and the circumstances surrounding the case.

According to Sekoni, having meticulously gone through the case, it is ideal to grant the applicant bail and to do otherwise will amount to injustice.

“There is no room for this court at this stage to express its sentiments as it is a matter of law, facts and circumstances which the court considers without being emotional or sentimental.

“Based on the above premise and most importantly in the interest of justice, this court deem it fit to grant the applicant bail upon the fulfillment of the following conditions and he must bear with me that the bail will be stringent taking into consideration the nature and circumstances of the case involved.

“There will be a bail bond in the sum of N1 million and three credible sureties in the like sum,” he said.

The presiding judge adjourned the case untill May 24, for hearing.

  • Bolt pledges €2.5m to attract female drivers in Nigeria, others

Bolt pledges €2.5m to attract female drivers in Nigeria, others

Bolt, a mobility application, has announced €2.5 million pledge to empower more women to drive with it and other ride-hailing platforms.

Bolt, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the pledge formed part of the company’s newly launched campaign called “Women at the Wheel”.

The company said it sought to address under-representation of women in the mobility sector, and to help women access the additional earning opportunities provided by working as a driver on a ride-hailing platform.

Venus Lim, Bolt’s Director of Central Operations for Ridehailing, said: “Women are under-represented in many parts of society, but in the mobility sector the inequality is particularly stark.

“There are many reasons why many women are unlikely to consider becoming drivers and this campaign aims at raising awareness of some of the prejudices held against female drivers.”

Lim said it would make it easy for women to access flexible, independent work on Bolt and other ride-hailing platforms, something which is particularly important now when cost of living is going up for everyone.

He said that the campaign came at a time when almost nine out of ten women reported seeing their living costs rise in the past twelve months.

According to him, this was revealed by a survey of 2,000 women which Bolt conducted across four countries in Europe and Africa.

“According to the survey, the vast majority (93 per cent ) of women surveyed say that they have sought new opportunities to earn additional income over the same period.

“Only 7.2 per cent had considered working as a driver on a ride-hailing platform to earn extra money,” Lim said.

Yahaya Mohammed, Country Manager, Bolt Rides, said that in Nigeria, Bolt had continued to champion women empowerment in the ride-hailing industry.

Mohammed said the company had done this by offering opportunities to women to get a career head start in the tech industry through its Women in Tech internship programme.

He said that the internship programme, now in its third year, offered young women with keen interest in the tech and ride-hailing industry, a three months paid internship while being mentored by top women in Bolt leadership.

“As a business, we value all our drivers and recognise that they play an integral role in the continued growth of our brand, and we do not take their commitment and efforts for granted.

“Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls (UN SDG 5) is a key pillar of our work.

“We at Bolt believe that we have an opportunity to contribute to bridging the gender gap by allowing women to be self-employed in the digital e-hailing space,” Mohammed said.

He said that through the “Women at the Wheel” campaign, Bolt would continue offering more women in Nigeria, viable economic opportunities to empower themselves.

Mohammed added that it would also advance the growth of the industry in the market.

Mohammed said that the campaign was running across eleven countries, which included Azerbaijan, Nigeria, Romania, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Portugal, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Latvia and Estonia. (NAN)
