Council boss restricts Okada, tricycle over kidnapping in Edo community

Acting Chairman of Esan West local government area, Albert Blessing Ebhodaghe, has announced restriction on the movement and operation of commercial and private motorcycles (popularly known as Okada) and tricycles (Keke).

Ebhodaghe said the move was to strengthen public safety as well as maintaining law and order.

The accoutrement by the Council boss followed protest that rocked Ekpoma, administrative headquarters of the council over incessant kidnapping.

Residents of Ekpoma had set up bon fires on the Ekpoma axis of the Benin-Abuja highway.

Motorists were stranded for several hours.

The residents said kidnappers have resorted to be abducting people from their houses.

They said kidnappings have become a daily occurrence in Ekpoma.

The Council boss, in a statement, directed that all Okada and tricycle operators must cease movement by 7pm daily.

He said security agencies operating within the locality have been formally instructed to enforce the restriction even as he vowed to sanction violators.

On his part, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Kassim Afegbua, in a statement, said matters of security required calm, coordination and constructive engagement.

He cautioned that actions such as blocking roads and disrupting movement, in the name of protest, might be exploited by criminal elements.

Afegbua said citizens must resist the urge to be caught in such dangerous tendencies.

The Information Commissioner said Governor Okpebholo remained responsive to genuine complaints relating to safety.

He explained that the government believed that effective security solutions were best achieved through intelligence sharing, community collaboration and sustained engagement with security agencies, not through unstructured actions that undermine public order.

According to him, “Governor Okpebholo’s security strategy is built around proactive measures, including the strengthening of the Edo Security Corps, neighbourhood watch initiatives and continuous engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions and sister states.

“These platforms are available for residents to channel security-related concerns, provide useful information and contribute meaningfully to keeping their communities safe.

“It must be emphasised that uncoordinated protests around security matters can distract security agencies from ongoing operations and complicate efforts to address criminal activities. The state therefore urges residents to remain law-abiding, calm and supportive of security operatives who continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and property.”

Civil society groups defend Komolafe, dismiss allegations against ex-NUPRC chief

A coalition of registered civil society organisations in Nigeria has dismissed allegations of asset manipulation and revenue concealment levelled against the immediate past Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, describing the claims as “baseless, contrived and malicious.”

The coalition, speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, said the allegations were being promoted by “faceless interests” whose illicit revenue channels were disrupted by reforms implemented under Komolafe’s four-year leadership at the commission.

Addressing journalists, the group said the briefing was convened to “set the records straight” and counter what it described as deliberate attempts to distort facts and discredit the achievements recorded at NUPRC during Komolafe’s tenure.

The statement was signed by Dr Wisdom Ohalete and Alhaji Nurudeen Abdulmaleek on behalf of the coalition.

“It is important to state that Engr. Komolafe exited office voluntarily and honourably, with his integrity intact,” the coalition said, adding that his time in office was marked by transparency, accountability and measurable institutional reforms in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.

The coalition highlighted what it described as ten verifiable milestones achieved under Komolafe’s leadership. These include the introduction of regulatory frameworks such as the Upstream Measurement Regulations and the Advanced Cargo Declaration Regulations, which it said strengthened hydrocarbon accounting and revenue assurance.

According to the group, Nigeria’s crude oil production recovered to an average of 1.68 million barrels per day during the period, peaking at about 1.8 million barrels per day in July 2025, while crude oil theft reportedly declined by over 90 per cent, from about 102,900 barrels per day in 2021 to roughly 9,600 barrels per day by September 2025.

The coalition also cited the approval of 79 Field Development Plans with an estimated investment value of nearly $40 billion, the introduction of the Regulatory Action Plan to implement the Petroleum Industry Act, and the enforcement of the “Drill or Drop” policy to optimise oil and gas assets.

Other achievements listed include renewed exploration activities through large-scale seismic data acquisition, the drilling and completion of 306 development wells between 2022 and 2025, and the full digitisation of licensing rounds, which the group said earned commendation from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

On gas development and sustainability, the coalition said NUPRC completed the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme, strengthened host community development through remittances to Host Community Development Trusts, and deployed environmental, social and governance (ESG) tools such as Host Comply. It also noted Nigeria’s role in regional regulatory cooperation through the establishment of the African Petroleum Regulators Forum (AFRIPERF).

The civil society groups further alleged that certain interests within the oil sector had mobilised “mushroom civil society groups” to stage protests in Abuja, Lagos and London in a bid to tarnish Komolafe’s reputation and trigger investigations by anti-graft agencies.

“We urge the public to disregard these malicious distortions and stand by the truth, facts and documented achievements,” the coalition said.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the Nigerian Army remains committed to contributing meaningfully to national development beyond its core security mandate. He was represented by the GOC 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Operation ENDURING PEACE, Major General Folusho Oyinlola.

The COAS noted that addressing Nigeria’s security and developmental challenges requires sustained collaboration between the military and the civil populace, stressing that education remains a critical pillar for national progress.

He urged students of the school to remain disciplined, focused and committed to academic excellence, describing them as future leaders whose success would shape the nation’s destiny.

Major General Wase said the project was driven by his passion for youth development and quality education. He described education as a powerful tool for nation-building and encouraged the students and school authorities to ensure proper utilisation of the facilities.

According to him, the intervention was also aimed at leaving a lasting impact on the community while reinforcing trust and cooperation between the Army and civilians.

The Principal of Government Secondary School, Wase, Malam Musa Ajiya in his vote of thanks, expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian Army for its consistent support to education and national security through CIMIC projects.

  • APC chieftain calls for Adeleke’s resignation over alleged payroll fraud

APC chieftain calls for Adeleke’s resignation over alleged payroll fraud

    …as Osun government dismisses allegations

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Surulere Constituency II of Lagos State, Hon. Quassim Shittu, has called for the resignation of Osun state governor, Ademola Adeleke, following allegations of a payroll fraud estimated at ₦13.7 billion.

Shittu, who addressed journalists on Saturday in Lagos, also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter, insisting that the claims require independent scrutiny to safeguard public funds.

The allegations stemmed from findings presented by a, a Lagos-based forensic audit firm engaged by the Osun State Government in April 2023 to conduct a comprehensive verification and validation of the state’s payroll.

According to the firm, its audit reduced the state’s monthly payroll from ₦4.48 billion for 37,456 workers and 17,918 pensioners in January 2023 to approximately ₦3.34 billion for 29,004 workers, with pensioners unchanged. It further alleged the discovery of 8,452 ghost workers, translating to purported monthly savings of ₦1.14 billion and an annual savings estimate of ₦13.7 billion.

Condemning the alleged findings, Shittu described Osun State as endowed with significant potentials that require leadership anchored on transparency and accountability. He asserted that the allegations, if proven true, should compel Governor Adeleke to resign.

“What we have been reading in the news about the Osun State Government under Ademola Adeleke is disturbing. If these allegations are true, the governor ought to have resigned by now,” he said.

He urged residents to consider the APC’s candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the 2026 governorship election, describing him as a credible alternative capable of repositioning the state.

Shittu maintained that Oyebamiji’s experience as a former Managing Director of NIWA equips him with the integrity and vision required for reforms.

However, the Osun State Government has firmly rejected the allegations, describing the audit firm’s claims as an attempt to impose a faulty and potentially fraudulent report on the state.

In a statement issued on Friday, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said the figures presented by Sally Tibbot Consulting Limited were inflated and prompted a re-verification exercise that revealed significant discrepancies.

According to the government, many individuals listed as ghost workers appeared physically during the re-verification, confirming their status as legitimate employees.

The government stated that it had offered to provide the firm with proof of the existence of the affected workers but noted that the company did not request such documentation or issue an acceptance letter for payment based on the 1,316 workers who were genuinely unaccounted for.

The statement further alleged that the consultant’s fees were tied to the amount purportedly saved for the state, raising concerns over financial motives. It also accused the firm of excluding legitimate staff during the audit and engaging in conduct that undermined the process.

While reaffirming its commitment to sanitising the payroll system, the government insisted it would not remove legitimate employees or endorse an audit report that could inflict further financial harm. It added that gaps and inconsistencies in the firm’s report necessitated the constitution of a verification committee before any implementation.

The Osun State Government maintained that it remains accountable to its workforce and citizens and would pursue reforms grounded in accuracy and fairness.
