  • Why I’m adopting a ‘not-so-privileged’ parenting style – Tiwa Savage

Why I’m adopting a ‘not-so-privileged’ parenting style – Tiwa Savage

Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage has shared her approach to single parenting, stating the importance of instilling ambition and drive in her son, Jamil.

Savage, via her Instagram story, corroborated with businesswoman, Ibukun Awosika’s statement that warned against spoiling children to prevent the risk of them growing up without passion or motivation.

The singer revealed that she intentionally exposes her 10-year-old son to experiences that promote humility and hard work, such as flying economy on commercial flights and earning privileges through chores and good grades.

She also limits his screen time and sweets, prioritising Bible study instead.

She wrote: “Pastor Awosika “do not kill your children’s dream by using your success to kill their ambition” if they always have everyone and they’ve lived such a luxurious life they MIGHT grow up without passion, drive, ambition and you have to have a need or lack of something to drive you to pursue your dream. A dream should be something bigger than your reality. Something you wish you have that you don’t already.

“Coincidentally this is something I have started doing with Jamil. Apart from when we fly private. When we do fly commercial I have started putting him in economy. Last time we flew and he was in economy he was upset with me, I had to keep going back and checking on him (mind you he was with his nanny o) . He said he was having neck pains and he couldn’t stretch his legs, someone that his legs are still short it can’t even touch the front seat.

“Now if he wants to buy Roblox he has to earn it by doing house chores or when he gets good grades. He is not allowed iPad, snacks or candy during the week. Bible study every night before bed. Thanks aunty @fenenellz for introducing us to that. Jamil is actually a really good kid though but I am intentional about setting a good foundation for him (that’s real love)”.

  • Top five Nollywood films to see in cinemas this January

Top five Nollywood films to see in cinemas this January

Nollywood is riding a serious high right now, and January 2026 has turned cinemas across Nigeria into buzzing hotspots of entertainment. Whether you’re craving emotional drama, laugh-out-loud comedy, sweeping historical epics, or pulse-pounding action, this month’s box office offerings deliver on every front.

We’ve rounded up five standout films currently dominating Nigerian cinemas. From family-centered struggles to myth-laden warfare and audacious heists, here are the Five Nollywood films you should see in cinemas this January:

    (1) Behind The Scenes

Funke Akindele proves once again why she remains one of Nollywood’s most bankable stars with this emotionally charged drama that mirrors real-life struggles many Nigerians know too well. The film follows Aderonke “Ronky-Fella” Faniran, played with depth and vulnerability by Scarlet Gomez, a wealthy real estate powerhouse whose open-handed generosity slowly becomes her downfall. Surrounded by family and friends who exploit her kindness, Ronke faces emotional exhaustion and financial strain. Strong performances from Iyabo Ojo, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Chatta, and Ini Dima-Okojie enrich the story, while Tobi Bakre shines as her entitled younger brother. Destiny Etiko and Uche Montana further elevate this poignant tale about boundaries, sacrifice, and the hidden cost of being everyone’s saviour.

    (2) Oversabi Aunty

Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi headlines this witty yet thought-provoking comedy as Toun, a deeply religious church usher who believes it is her divine duty to correct everyone around her. Her well-meaning interference soon spirals into chaos, turning her home into a moral war zone and culminating in an unforgettable wedding introduction gone wrong. Featuring an impressive cast that includes Mike Ezuruonye, Jemima Osunde, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Ngozi Ezeonu, and Queen Nwokoye, the film balances humour with hard lessons about judgment, self-awareness, and the dangers of excessive righteousness.

    (3) Colours of Fire

Under the direction of Niyi Akinmolayan, Colours of Fire unfolds as a visually rich and emotionally intense epic set in a mythical past. Uzor Arukwe stars as Akinbode, a feared warrior tasked with eliminating a dangerous enemy threatening his people. His mission takes an unexpected turn when he falls in love with Moremi, played by Osas Ighodaro, a woman from the rival tribe he has been taught to despise. Their forbidden love ignites conflict that forces both sides to confront generations of hatred. With commanding performances from Femi Branch, Ibrahim Chatta, Mercy Aigbe, and Gabriel Afolayan, the film blends romance, war, and folklore into a powerful cinematic experience.

    (4) Gingerrr

For fans of fast-paced thrillers, Gingerrr delivers tension, style, and adrenaline in equal measure. Dubbed the heist film of the year, the story follows four women driven by desperation, revenge, and buried secrets as they plan a daring robbery that could change their lives forever. Led by Bisola Aiyeola, Bukunmi “KieKie” Adeaga-Ilori, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wumi Toriola—who also double as executive producers—the film thrives on sharp dialogue, suspense, and unpredictable twists. Supporting roles from Lateef Adedimeji, Timini Egbuson, and Shaffy Bello add depth to this gritty, edge-of-your-seat ride.

    (5) Agesinkole 2 (King of Thieves)

Femi Adebayo returns with the long-awaited sequel to his 2022 smash hit, reigniting the legend of the feared outlaw Ajeromi. Agesinkole 2 plunges viewers back into a troubled kingdom where corruption, power struggles, and ancient forces collide once more. Odunlade Adekola reprises his role as the embattled king, joined by an expansive cast that includes Toyin Abraham, Yemi Solade, Muyiwa Ademola, Fathia Balogun Williams, and veteran icon Adebayo Salami. Rich in Yoruba mythology, intense battles, and mystic symbolism, the film stands as a grand celebration of culture and cinematic ambition.

If you’re heading to the cinema this weekend, these five films offer something for every mood—and each one proves that Nollywood’s box office reign is only getting stronger.

Kano to conduct statewide census of tertiary educational institutions

Kano State Bureau of Statistics (KSBS) has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive census of tertiary educational institutions across the state from Jan. 14 to Jan. 23.

The Statistician-General of the state, Dr Suraj Sulaiman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Kano.

Sulaiman said the 10-working-day exercise was aimed at generating accurate and up-to-date data on Kano State’s tertiary education sector to support effective planning and policy formulation.

He said data to be collected would include the number and types of tertiary institutions in the state, students’ enrolment, academic programmes, available infrastructure such as classrooms, laboratories and libraries, staffing levels and qualifications, as well as the operational status of the institutions.

According to him, the census will provide policymakers, education managers and other stakeholders with reliable information for better resource allocation and improved educational outcomes.

The statistician-general urged all the tertiary institutions in the state to cooperate with trained enumerators and supervisors that would be deployed for the exercise.

“The cooperation of all tertiary institutions is critical to shaping the future of education in Kano State. The data gathered will play a key role in evidence-based decision-making,” he said.

He added that the success of the exercise depended largely on the willingness of institutions to provide timely and accurate information.

Suleiman further said the census would be one of the most extensive data-gathering efforts in Kano State’s tertiary education sector in recent years and would provide a clearer picture of existing capacities and challenges in the system.

  • APC South-south slams Rivers lawmakers over plot to impeach Fubara

APC South-south slams Rivers lawmakers over plot to impeach Fubara

The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Group and lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have expressed contrasting positions on recent developments involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the implementation of the 2026 budget process.

The APC South-South Group, speaking on Friday in Port Harcourt, reacted to comments by some lawmakers who claimed that the governor had not fully adhered to the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resolve ongoing political tensions in the state.

Addressing journalists, the group’s coordinator, Comrade Freedom Amadi, said the issues currently generating concern were linked to disagreements over the budget and governance priorities.

He maintained that the governor’s decisions were within his administrative authority and called for continued dialogue to preserve stability.

According to him, the presidential peace accord was designed to restore calm and ensure that all institutions in the state functioned without friction.

He added that mutual respect for constitutional roles remained essential for sustaining the progress achieved since the agreement was reached.

Lawmakers, however, have insisted that certain actions recently taken by the governor were inconsistent with the terms of the agreement and argued that the House of Assembly would continue to exercise its constitutional responsibilities.

The APC South-South urged all parties to avoid actions or statements that could escalate tensions, stressing that collaborative engagement was necessary to uphold democratic order.

The group also called on both the Rivers State House of Assembly and relevant federal institutions to maintain restraint and prioritise measures that reinforce peace, institutional harmony, and public confidence in the governance process.

    • APC debunks ex-chair Adamu’s alleged movement to ADC
    • Bauchi PDP says Bala Mohammed still with party
    • LP faction to INEC: Accord Usman recognition; wishes Obi well in ADC
    • Dickson: I’m still in PDP but keenly monitoring developments

Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party at the 2023 elections, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed shock that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar  is still seeking Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

Datti  recalled that Atiku has been seeking to occupy the highest  office in the land since his (Datti)  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.

Baba-Ahmed made the remark yesterday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

He noted  that the country  needs a new generation of leaders, adding  that many capable citizens are willing to address the country’s challenges but are discouraged by what he described as an expensive and difficult political system dominated by godfathers and unfulfilled promises.

According to him, “When I was doing my NYSC, Baba Atiku was an aspirant, and in 2018, we contested the primaries together. In 2023, we contested again, with me as a vice-presidential candidate elsewhere, when his vice president had left him. And, for God’s sake, in 2027 again.

“There is a need for a new generation of Nigerian leaders, and they do exist. A whole new generation is waiting for a new leader to lead them to a new party.

“There are good Nigerians capable of solving Nigeria’s problems, but they are discouraged by an expensive, difficult and treacherous system filled with godfathers and broken promises.”

The Labour Party chieftain also dismissed claims that he had declared interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.

He clarified that he only reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party and did not announce any presidential ambition.

“I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility of that happening. I certainly did not declare for the presidency. I simply reiterated my membership of the Labour Party,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed added that decisions on future elections would depend on the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the position of the party, urging the public to ignore what he described as sensational narratives circulating on social media.

Meanwhile, the All Progressive Congress, APC has denied viral online reports  that its former National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has defected to the opposition African Democratic Congress, ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The report, circulated online on Thursday, claimed that Adamu’s alleged defection was “neither sudden nor accidental, but the culmination of months of deepening rifts, quiet consultations, and growing dissatisfaction with the internal direction of the APC at both national and state levels. As a founding pillar of the ruling party and one of its most influential power brokers since 2015, Adamu’s exit would represent a symbolic and strategic blow to the APC’s cohesion.”

Debunking the rumour yesterday, the APC in Nasarawa State said Adamu  is still a committed member of the party.

A statement signed by the party’s state organizing secretary and coordinator of the APC e-membership registration exercise, Barr Hassan Abubakar, a copy made available to our correspondent yesterday in Lafia, described the rumour as unfounded and mischievous.

The statement reads: “We state categorically and without any ambiguity that this claim is false, malicious, and deliberately concocted to mislead the public and sow seeds of confusion within the APC family.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator (Dr) Abdullahi Adamu, CON remains a steadfast, committed and card-carrying member of the APC. At no time did he defect, contemplate defection, or associate himself with any other political party.

“The photograph being mischievously circulated online was taken during the ongoing APC e-membership registration and revalidation exercise, a nationwide programme aimed at strengthening the party’s database and consolidating internal democracy.

“The said image clearly captures Senator Adamu revalidating his APC membership, in full alignment with the party’s constitutional processes and reform agenda.

“It is therefore irresponsible, intellectually dishonest and politically desperate for faceless individuals and their sponsors to twist a legitimate party activity into a false narrative of defection. Such acts amount to deliberate misinformation and an affront to political decency.

“Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s pedigree, sacrifices, and towering contributions to the growth and stability of the APC are well documented and need no validation from purveyors of fake news. His loyalty to the APC is unquestionable, unshaken, and unwavering.

“We call on party members, the media, and the general public to disregard this falsehood in its entirety” the statement added

Adamu, had in a newspaper report dismissed his rumoured defection to the APC as false and a social media attempt to attract attention, saying “I am not an ungrateful politician.”

“Don’t mind the social media reporter. They want to draw me out, but I have nothing to tell anybody. I am not an ungrateful politician. I served at the highest level of my party, and I am where I am today,” the former APC chair was quoted to have said.

A similar report about Bauchi State governor, Bala  Mohammed planning to defect to the ADC has also been debunked by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The state PDP Chairman, Hon. Sama’ila Adamu Burga, described the defection claims as fake, baseless and politically motivated in a statement issued yesterday.

He urged the public to ignore the misinformation being shared on social media.

Burga said the rumour was already addressed at a stakeholders’ meeting held on January 4, 2026, where party leaders reaffirmed their loyalty to the PDP and passed a vote of confidence on the governor.

The meeting was attended by top PDP officials, members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, State Executive Council, local government chairmen, party executives, serving lawmakers, and other political stakeholders.

According to Burga, stakeholders commended Governor Mohammed for his leadership and commitment to good governance as governor of Bauchi State and chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

He added that despite media attacks and political pressure, the governor remains committed to defending democratic values, fairness and constitutional order.

Burga noted that Governor Mohammed expressed gratitude for the support and reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, promising to continue promoting peace and development in Bauchi State and Nigeria.

He stressed that the governor has never discussed plans to defect to the ADC, APC or any other party, and that major political decisions in the PDP are taken collectively and through consultation.

Burga concluded that Governor Bala Mohammed remains a loyal and principled leader of the PDP adding that the party is open to dialogue with others, but not on the basis of rumours or misinformation.

LP faction to INEC: Accord Usman, Nwokocha recognition

The Labour Party faction led by its interim chairman, Nenadi Usman has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to affirm  Senators Usman and Darlington Nwokocha as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively of the party.

The party in a communiqué after its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, said this would be in compliance with the rule of law and the April 4, 2025, Supreme Court judgement referenced by the commission.

The communiqué, which was signed by Senator Nwokocha, said the NWC unanimously adopted Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party.

It wished its former presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, who left the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) well in his future political endeavours and in his new political party.

The communiqué reads: “The NWC reaffirmed that the Labour Party remains united, indivisible, indissoluble and steadfast in its mission to build a Nigeria founded on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.

“Accordingly, as the party continues to monitor political developments across the country, the Labour Party remains a strong and viable political force and shall continue to operate as an independent, ideologically driven political organisation.”

The party noted the recent expressions of interest by certain individuals to contest elective positions under its platform, stating that “this growing interest reflects the increasing confidence Nigerians have in the party.”

It maintained that the congresses and the National Convention will still hold as scheduled and urged members at all levels to actively participate in the congress processes.

“The Labour Party leadership remains committed to ensuring credible, transparent, and inclusive congresses,” the communiqué added.

I am still in  PDP— Senator Dickson

Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has dismissed as false reports circulating in sections of the media alleging that he has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued yesterday  by his media aide, Ajiri Daniels, Senator Dickson categorically stated that he remains a committed member of the PDP and has not decamped to any other political party.

The Senator explained that he is presently in mourning following the death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. He noted that, as a mark of respect, he has since stepped back from political activities during this period of mourning and has been busy receiving condolence visits from friends, political leaders, allies and well wishers all over the country.

These visitors cut across political leaders from different political parties and persons from all spheres of life.

While noting that he is keenly following developments in the political space, Senator Dickson assured that after the burial, he will consult widely with friends and political allies across the country before taking any decision, which will be formally announced. But in the meantime he still remains a key leader in the PDP, hoping that the party will get its act right in view of its legacy contribution to Nigerian politics.

He urged members of the public, party faithful, and supporters to discountenance the report, describing it as fake news and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, and advised them to rely only on information from his verified communication channels.

  • Jersey returns $9.5m looted funds to Nigeria for Abuja–Kano road

Jersey returns $9.5m looted funds to Nigeria for Abuja–Kano road

The Bailiwick of Jersey has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government to repatriate more than $9.5 million in funds adjudged to be proceeds of corruption, boosting financing for a critical national infrastructure project.

His Majesty’s Attorney General for Jersey, Mark Temple KC, signed the MoU in December 2025, paving the way for the transfer of the forfeited funds to Nigeria for use on the Abuja–Kano Road project.

The development followed a successful civil forfeiture process initiated by Jersey authorities. On November 29, 2023, the Attorney General applied to the Royal Court of Jersey under the Forfeiture of Assets (Civil Proceedings) (Jersey) Law 2018 in respect of tainted funds held in a Jersey bank account.

The court, on January 12, 2024, granted a forfeiture order after finding that the monies were, on the balance of probabilities, proceeds of a corrupt scheme involving the diversion of government funds by third-party contractors for the benefit of senior Nigerian officials and their associates.

The latest MoU builds on earlier cooperation between both jurisdictions. Under two previous agreements, Jersey had repatriated more than $300 million to Nigeria to fund three major infrastructure projects, the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, the Second Niger Bridge, and the Abuja–Kano Road.

While the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge have been completed, the newly returned funds will be applied to the final stages of the Abuja–Kano Road, a 375-kilometre highway linking the nation’s capital to its second-largest city.

Speaking on the development, Attorney General Mark Temple KC described the recovery as a testament to the effectiveness of Jersey’s legal framework in combating corruption.

“This successful return demonstrates the strength of our civil forfeiture legislation as a powerful tool in the fight against corruption,” he said. “I thank the Nigerian authorities for their cooperation and the Economic Crime and Confiscation Unit in my Department for their unwavering commitment to recovering the proceeds of crime.”

On Nigeria’s side, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), said the repatriation underscored the country’s resolve to work with international partners to deny safe haven to illicit wealth.

“The successful recovery and repatriation of the forfeited assets underscore the effectiveness of Nigeria’s collaborative efforts with its international partners in ensuring there is no safe haven for illicitly acquired wealth moved to foreign jurisdictions,” Fagbemi said.

He expressed appreciation to the Bailiwick of Jersey for its cooperation and assured that the funds would be used strictly in line with the MoU.

“I want to further assure the Bailiwick of Jersey that the repatriated assets will be judiciously utilised in accordance with the terms of the executed Memorandum of Understanding,” he added.

The latest recovery reinforces ongoing international efforts to trace, seize and return stolen public assets, while channelling them into projects with direct economic and social impact for Nigerians.
