Uzodimma reaffirms South-East unity, cooperation, support for Tinubu

Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo has reaffirmed the commitment of South-East governors to regional unity, collaboration and support for Nigeria’s overall national development.

Uzodinma spoke on Friday during a New Year visit to Gov. Alex Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia.

He said the visit underscored ongoing efforts by South-East leaders to strengthen cooperation and collectively address development challenges confronting the region.

According to him, sustained collaboration remains essential to unlocking the South-East’s economic potential and improving living standards for the people.

“This is a new year, 2026, and as leaders of the South-East, we are determined to develop our region through collaboration,” Uzodinma said.

The Imo governor, who chairs the South-East Governors’ Forum, said the meeting created room for frank discussions on governance priorities.

He noted that governors exchanged ideas on infrastructure, security, economic growth and policies aimed at improving citizens’ welfare.

“I came to share ideas with my brother, wish him a happy New Year and pray God grants us wisdom to serve better,” he added.

Addressing questions on political motives, Uzodinma said leadership engagements inevitably involve political discussions.

“Everything in the world is politics. When two politicians meet, political conversations will naturally take place,” he said.

On the 2027 general elections, Uzodinma dismissed claims that opposition realignments could weaken President Bola Tinubu’s prospects.

He said Tinubu’s leadership record remained a strong foundation for public support across the country.

“President Tinubu is a brand. His achievements in the economy, security, policies and social interventions speak clearly,” Uzodinma said.

He stressed that South-East governors had resolved to move beyond ethnic, sectional or divisive political considerations.

“We have decided to stop tribal politics. We are Nigerians first before any other identity,” he stated.

Uzodinma said all five South-East governors were united in supporting Tinubu’s policies and good governance initiatives.

He urged the media to accurately reflect the true positions of leaders, stressing the region’s commitment to national unity.

Uzodinma said the South-East remained firmly dedicated to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria.

In his response, Governor Otti thanked Uzodinma for the visit and extended New Year goodwill to Nigerians.

Otti described Uzodinma as a brother and commended his leadership of the South-East Governors’ Forum.

He said the visit was not necessarily political, though political discussions were unavoidable among elected leaders.

“It is impossible for politicians to meet without touching on politics,” Otti said.

He emphasised that governance remains a collective responsibility shared across federal, state and local governments.

“Government is one. You cannot claim opposition to a government you are constitutionally part of,” he stated.

Otti said differences in party affiliation should not be misconstrued as opposition to governance itself.

“You may disagree, but once decisions are taken, everyone remains part of the system,” he added.

He reaffirmed Abia’s place within the Federal Republic of Nigeria and appreciated Uzodinma’s visit.

Otti highlighted longstanding ties between Abia and Imo, noting significant social and commercial interactions, especially in Aba.

“We were once one state. Boundaries do not divide us. We are Igbo people and Nigerians,” Otti said.

  • SEC targets long-term capital to drive infrastructure, key sectors

SEC targets long-term capital to drive infrastructure, key sectors

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has said it is prioritising the mobilisation of long-term capital to bridge Nigeria’s infrastructure and sectoral funding gaps.

In addition the SEC plans to streamline regulatory frameworks while supporting the issuance of innovative financial instruments that will channel investment into productive areas of the economy.

This was contained in a New Year message delivered in Abuja by the Director General of the Commission, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, who said the capital market will play a more strategic role in national development going forward.

Agama stated that in 2026, the Commission will facilitate the issuance of infrastructure bonds, green bonds, municipal bonds and infrastructure-focused funds as part of efforts to deepen structured financing for critical national assets.

According to him, “Our goal is to attract long-term domestic and international capital into roads, power, rail, housing, and digital infrastructure, while making it easier for state governments and infrastructure companies to access the market efficiently.”

He added that the SEC will also promote increased participation of the agricultural sector in the capital market by encouraging the listing of agribusiness firms and creating tailored listing windows for agricultural cooperatives and value-chain companies.

“We will promote the listing of agribusiness firms and create tailored listing windows for agricultural cooperatives and value-chain companies. Through commodity exchanges, agricultural investment trusts, and commodities-linked financial instruments, we will de-risk agriculture, ensure fair pricing for farmers, strengthen food security, and allow Nigerians to own a stake in the nation’s breadbasket,” he said.

The Director General further disclosed that the Commission will drive the revitalisation of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and introduce innovative affordable housing bonds to improve access to capital for large-scale housing delivery.

“These initiatives will unlock capital for mass housing delivery, create new asset classes for investors, and move millions of Nigerians closer to homeownership,” he stated.

Agama explained that the Commission is also reviewing its rules to encourage more listings from small and medium-scale industries, especially in sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals and finished goods.

According to him, “We are reviewing our rules to incentivize listings from small and medium-scale industries, with special focus on manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and finished goods. By providing patient capital through the capital market, we will revitalize factories, reduce import dependency, create jobs, and position ‘Made in Nigeria’ as a global brand.”

He noted that the SEC will support Nigeria’s power sector by facilitating instruments such as infrastructure bonds, green energy bonds, project-backed securities and public–private investment vehicles.

“The SEC will support Nigeria’s power sector through infrastructure bonds, green energy bonds, project-backed securities, and public–private investment vehicles. We will help unlock long-term capital for grid expansion, renewable energy projects, embedded power solutions, and energy transition initiatives. By improving bankability structures and attracting patient capital into the power value chain, the capital market will support energy security,” he said.

Agama stated that the beginning of the new year presents the opportunity for the Commission to deepen the purpose and impact of the Nigerian capital market.

He said, “We are not merely turning a page on the calendar; we are embracing a profound opportunity—an opportunity to redefine the very purpose and power of the Nigerian Capital Market.”

The SEC boss noted that the past year marked a period of transformation for the market and expressed confidence that the coming period would further strengthen its role in driving sustainable economic growth.

“We look back at a year of transformation and look forward to a future where our capital market becomes the definitive solution provider for Nigeria’s most pressing economic and developmental needs,” he added.

Chief of Naval Staff assures return to fishing activities in Lake Chad

The Chief of Naval Staff (CoNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has pledged to secure Lake Chad and its surrounding waterways, enabling the resumption of fishing and other socio-economic activities in the northeast.

Speaking in Maiduguri during a working visit to Naval formations in the Lake Chad Basin, Abbas emphasized the importance of synergy between the military and other security agencies to end the war and secure the region.

“Our joint military action with security agencies and the Civilian JTF in the Lake Chad and its shores will enable fishermen and farmers resume their economic activities by securing the Lake and dozens of waterways that serve many communities in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states,” he said.

The Nation reports that the CoNS’s visit aimed to assess operational requirements of troops in the Lake Chad region, comprising Chad, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger Republic. He revealed that the military joint action targets Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, denying them access to the Lake and waterways.

“Beyond securing the Lake, our efforts will revive economic activities and improve the lives of communities affected by the insurgency,” Abbas added.

He inspected the Maiduguri Naval Base construction and met with Governor Babagana Zulum to discuss security efforts. He also visited the Baga Naval base, emphasizing the military’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.

The Chief of Naval Staff’s assurance has raised hopes for the thousands of displaced fishermen and farmers in the Lake Chad region, who have been forced to abandon their livelihoods due to the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Lake Chad, once a thriving source of fish and livelihood for millions, has been a hotspot for terrorist activities, making it imperative for the military to intervene.

Vice Admiral Abbas’s visit to the region underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to securing the Lake Chad and its surrounding waterways.

The Maiduguri Naval Base, currently under construction, is expected to enhance the Navy’s capabilities in the region, providing a strategic location for monitoring and securing the Lake Chad.

Governor Babagana Zulum, who met with Abbas, praised the military’s efforts and assured the government’s continued support in the fight against insurgency.

The Lake Chad region, which spans across four countries, has been plagued by Boko Haram’s terrorist activities, resulting in significant displacement, hunger, and economic hardship. The military’s renewed efforts aim to restore peace, stability, and economic prosperity to the region.

The success of the operation is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy, enabling the revival of fishing, farming, and other socio-economic activities, improving the lives of communities in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.

  • NAB urges Aiyedatiwa to intervene in Ondo state disability agency leadership crisis

NAB urges Aiyedatiwa to intervene in Ondo state disability agency leadership crisis

The Nigerian Association of the Blind (NAB), Ondo State chapter, has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to take urgent action over what it described as worsening leadership and administrative challenges at the State Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities.

In a letter to the governor, a copy of which was obtained by The Nation, NAB said the state’s disability community was facing unrest due to alleged poor leadership and unresolved internal conflicts within the agency.

The association recalled a meeting with Governor Aiyedatiwa on September 3, during which assurances were reportedly given that concerns raised by persons with disabilities would be addressed.

However, NAB lamented that the same individual accused of mismanaging the agency remains in charge, a situation it said continues to fuel dissatisfaction and unrest among the disability community.

“Surprisingly, she is still the one manning the leadership of the Agency for the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities in Ondo State, causing unrest among us, which we are not happy with,” the letter stated.

The association also raised concerns over the handling of funds released for the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, alleging that part of the N9 million approved by the state government was mismanaged.

“Recently, sir, you released N9 million for the Disability Day, but surprisingly, this same person and her cronies decided to siphon the money released by you,” the group alleged.

It, however, commended the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, for reportedly intervening to ensure the funds were applied for their intended purpose, including the empowerment of at least 120 persons with disabilities.

Despite this intervention, the association said some beneficiaries were yet to receive their payments, a situation it noted had further heightened tension within the disability community.

The group also alleged that an incident at the agency nearly claimed the life of one of its members, describing the development as deeply troubling.

“This did not make us happy at all. Are we going to continue to be silent till death? No, Mr Governor, save us from this ungodly woman who wants to rule us,” the letter read.

According to the association, activities at the agency have virtually stalled due to leadership disputes, resulting in disunity among disability clusters and weakening their collective voice.

It warned that the situation had made persons with disabilities appear marginalised and inferior in the eyes of both the government and the wider society.

As part of its demands, the association called for the immediate dissolution of the agency’s board before the end of the year, stating, “As we are writing to you, the agency is in shambles, unplanned, and lacks direction.”

The group also appealed to the governor to approve its nominee, Adenibuyan Monday, as chairman of the agency’s board, stressing that the request was based on the principles of “rule of law, justice, integrity, and equal representation” within the disability community.
