No fewer than 250 People With Disabilities (PWDs) in Osun State have benefited from the N50 million Business Recapitalisation Grants of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to boost their livelihoods.

The distribution was done through the Osun State First Lady, Chief Titilola Adeleke, who doled out N30 million to 150 beneficiaries and gave N20 million to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the other 100 PWDs.

Speaking at the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative(RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme to commemorate 2025 PWDs Day, disclosed that 9,500 PWDs and Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association benefitted from Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s initiative of Social Investment Programme across Nigeria.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the grant by growing and sustaining their businesses with it.

Ekiti APC begins e-registration, mobilises support for Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has commenced its digital membership e-registration exercise as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structure.

Speaking during the flag-off of the Train-the-Trainers session in Ado Ekiti, the APC State Chairman Sola Elesin said that the e-registration would not only modernise the party’s membership register but also mobilise broader support for President Tinubu’s policies.

He noted that the digital registration was central to rebuilding the party’s support base and ensuring data accuracy for strategic planning.

Elesin noted that the outcome of the last presidential election in Nigeria, propelled the broom party to come up with the programme.

Elesin said: “Prior to the election, we believed we would have 50 million party members who would vote for our president in the election, but the result was released, we had  just over 11 million votes for Mr. President.  This shows that even our party members failed to vote going by the data.

“Since that time, we have been looking for a way to have accurate data about actual number of the members of the party that is the essence of continued digital membership process.  We believe we will have accurate data for whatever we want to organize in the party and to forge ahead.

The State Coordinator of the APC e-registration, Hon. Gold Adesola Adedayo noted that the programme was designed to shore up the party’s membership.

The former Commissioner for Youths in Ekiti State explained that the party decided to do the e-registration to  digitalize the initial  record of the party members.

Adedayo, who is now a commissioner-designate, said, “It is primarily for digitalizing party membership register. It is to give accountability, transparency and of course to enhance service delivery from our party and when we no know our exact figure, then the dividends of democracy will not be difficult to spread to all.

“This is the reason behind this program. We all know that we have a register before now, and we have all registered from  our units to the  wards, the state  and even the federal.

“But the different now ,is that it will be digitalized and we will all have access to it from our phones, in our homes, we can check our membership of the party.  It will also give  us  the opportunity of authenticating the actual numbers of the party members in the state . There will no longer be contradicting figure on membership of the party.

“We are expecting all our members across the 177 wards in the state to register. I know that Ekiti people are for APC and so I am looking at about 70 to 80 percent of the population of Ekiti to turn out in their  large number to register as APC card-carrying members”.

  • Unity of purpose, stakeholders’ collaboration ‘ll end insecurity in Southwest – Gani Adams, Ogunlewe, others

Unity of purpose, stakeholders’ collaboration ‘ll end insecurity in Southwest – Gani Adams, Ogunlewe, others

Unity of purpose and stakeholders’ collaboration can end insecurity and mindless destruction of lives and property, especially in the Southwest, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said.

He said such unity will eradicate gaps in intelligence gathering and sharing, as well as response time to incidences of insecurity.

“There has been weak coordination among security actors occasioned by poor collaboration between government security agencies, local vigilantes, traditional institutions, and civil society,” he noted.

He called on leaders at all levels, including governors, local governments chairpersons, traditional rulers and community heads, to come together in the quest to decisively put an end to the insecurity challenge.

He made the call at a virtual International Conference, titled, ‘The importance of unity in strengthening security and preventing genocide in Yorubaland,’ organized by Yoruba One Voice (YOV) Worldwide.

“Unity is the bedrock upon which peace and security are built. In Yorubaland, our strength lies in our ability to come together as one people, transcending differences of origin, religion, or language.

“When we unite, we create a formidable force that can effectively safeguard our communities against threats and violence. The principle of unity is such that rallies people for regional cohesion and integration, and foster loyalty to Yorubaland above sectional loyalties,” he said.

Adams commended the southwest governors on the planned security fund, saying that the development was a direct answer to the kind of unity and collaboration he and other stakeholders have been calling for among the governors.

“With joint security fund that has been approved, it will greatly help to raise the huge resources required for the fight against the terrorists.

“Our governors should assist the Yoruba speaking communities in Kogi and Kwara States. They should invite all traditional rulers and community leaders in those areas for a meeting so as to collectively design the best approach to stop the kidnappings and mindless killings of our people.”

Adams stressed that stakeholders cannot afford to allow the terrorists to create immense collateral damage in the southwest region.

“To be sure, about 50 to 60 per cent of national investments and monuments are domiciled in the southwest. If we do not defend the investments, the coming generation would blame us.

“For instance, part of the information I received was that Fulani herders are bent on exterminating the Yoruba people from Kwara State. They also want to do a similar thing to Yoruba speaking people in Kogi State. You will observe that the assailants are not attacking the Igala and Ebira people in Okene,” he added.

On his part, the Parakoyi Aare Ona Kakanfo, Prof Kolawole Raheem, called for collective action against the bandits who he noted were bent on displacing Yoruba people and dispossessing them of their lands and resources.

The guest speaker, Prof. Adetayo Olurotimi Ogunlewe, bemoaned what he described as systematic targeting of Yorubaland given the patterns of attacks, kidnappings and displacement.

He said that, if unaddressed, the situation could escalate into widespread atrocities or genocide against Yoruba communities.

Ogunlewe, who was a former lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU) and also the Secretary, Lagos Literary Society, therefore called on security stakeholders to launch out viciously against the bandits and terrorists with a view to clearing and exterminating them from their hideouts.

Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary General, YOV, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, noted that the grim picture of growing insecurity ravaging Yorubaland and South West Nigeria had reached an alarming level that demanded strategic urgent action.

Ademiluyi said it was in recognition of the severity of the challenge and the urgent need to mitigate the violence and general insecurity occasioned by the invasions, that YOV organised the conference.

Another participant in the conference, who is a prominent member of YOV, Iyalode Abike Ade from the United Kingdom (UK), called for increased campaign and advocacy locally and internationally to raise awareness about all actions against Yoruba communities that can encourage and lead to genocide.

She also canvasses for support for grassroots initiatives to strengthen traditional security structures within legal and human-rights-compliant frameworks.

At the end of the conference, some of the recommendations given by participants included the need to establish a Yoruba Security Coordination Framework to create mechanisms for improved cooperation among local vigilantes, state security agencies, traditional rulers, and community networks for more coordinated intelligence-gathering and rapid response; and a need for regular security stakeholder meeting and conference to cross-fertilize ideas on ways to decisively tackle the challenge of insecurity in Yorubaland.

Other recommendations included creating a joint intelligence-sharing system as part of new measures to confront worsening insecurity in the region; and the urgent adoption of community policing to facilitate the deployment of local and community -security networks to address security challenges.

    Osun marks World AIDS Day

Osun State has commemorated World AIDS Day 2025 with a series of impactful, community-driven activities aimed at renewing commitment, raising awareness, and strengthening action toward ending AIDS as a public health threat.

The event was themed, “Overcoming Disruptions; Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response.”

Partners and stakeholders across the state delivered coordinated interventions that touched every segment of the population.

The commemoration started with a vibrant road walk, featuring representatives from the TB, HIV, and Malaria programs, Network of people living with HIV( NEPWHAN), implementing partners, civil society groups, and community volunteers. Participants marched through major streets across Osun State, distributing educational materials and engaging residents on the importance of early testing, treatment adherence, and preventive practices.

The road walk served as a powerful symbolic action to amplify visibility, reinforce solidarity, and mobilize community participation in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases.

A major highlight of the event was the rollout of comprehensive Integrated Testing Services, bringing essential health screening directly to the communities. These services included:

Cutting-edge PDX diagnostic machines were deployed to conduct real-time screening for tuberculosis—particularly children and vulnerable groups. The use of these devices allowed for quicker identification of presumptive TB cases and immediate linkage to further evaluation.

Free, confidential HIV testing was offered to the general population, with special attention to pregnant women to strengthen the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) efforts. Trained counselors were available onsite to provide pre- and post-test counseling, ensuring individuals understood their results and next steps.

Rapid malaria testing was also conducted for adults and children, supporting early diagnosis and reducing risk of complications. This integration reflected the state’s commitment to a holistic approach to public health.

Throughout the activities, health educators and volunteers led awareness sessions addressing HIV prevention, stigma reduction, treatment adherence, benefits of knowing one’s status, and healthy lifestyle practices. These sensitization efforts targeted the general population, including youth, market women, transport unions, and rural communities. The interactive sessions helped demystify misconceptions around HIV, TB, and malaria, while encouraging individuals to take advantage of the free testing services available.

The commemoration was coordinated by the Osun State Agency for the control of HIV in collaboration, State Aids Control Programme ( SASCP), Osun State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (STBLCP), Osun State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP) with implementing partners.

Akpabio to Natasha: Present evidence of alleged sexual harassment to court, not social media

Senate President Godswill Akpabio yesterday  called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to stop the lies and present evidence to substantiate her allegation of sexual harassment against him.

Akpabio in a statement by his media aide, Jackson Udom, titled: “Setting the record straight on the defamation case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan said: “On 5 December 2025, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan again resorted to social media to claim incorrectly and misleadingly that His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, had only just filed a multi-billion-naira defamation suit against her over her unfounded allegations of sexual misconduct.

“These allegations, as the public is well aware, have never been supported by a single shred of evidence before the Senate Committee or before any competent authority.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the facts are clear, verifiable, and already before the court.

“Following Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s grave and unsubstantiated accusations capable of inflicting severe reputational damage, Senator Akpabio exercised his constitutional right to seek legal redress.

“The suit was filed over three months ago. Its progress was temporarily delayed by routine administrative processes and the normal judicial procedures.

“Upon the resumption of judicial activities on the file, several attempts were made by the court’s bailiff to personally serve Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan with the originating processes.

“Each attempt failed due to her deliberate evasion of service, as deposed to under oath in the bailiff’s affidavit now before the court. Only after these repeated evasions did the court, in November this year granted the application for substituted service.

“Her claim that the matter was “just filed” is therefore false, misleading, and intended to distort public understanding of the case.

“We reiterate that legal disputes are resolved in courtrooms, not through orchestrated narratives and staged outrage on social-media platforms.

“The online applause Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan habitually seeks cannot replace credible evidence, legal procedure, or judicial scrutiny.

“This behaviour is consistent with her pattern during her six-month Senate suspension, an entirely lawful disciplinary measure she sought to delegitimise through digital agitation, only to ultimately serve the suspension in full.

“It is time for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to present the “evidence” she claims to possess before a court of competent jurisdiction, rather than relying on sensationalised commentary designed solely to attract sympathy and obscure the facts.

“The law is guided by proof, procedure, and due process, not sentiment, not emotion, and certainly not social-media theatrics.

“She is advised to properly instruct her lawyers, file her defence, and finally provide the evidence she purports to have for the baseless allegations she has peddled over this matter.

“This is that her golden opportunity. The public, the media, and the legal community now await her defence to the defamatory claims of the plaintiff.”

NAF pilots escape death as fighter jet crashes in Niger

Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet pilots escaped death yesterday after safely ejecting from their aircraft following an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check flight at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Kainji, Niger State.

The pilots were said to have “expertly” manoeuvred the aircraft away from populated areas before executing a safe ejection, thereby avoiding civilian causality.

NAF’s spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, announced this in a statement yesterday.

According to Ejodame, the aircraft developed an emergency shortly after take-off, prompting the pilots to “act swiftly and with remarkable composure.”

  • Goodluck Jonathan’s metamorphosis

    Goodluck Jonathan’s metamorphosis

Former president Goodluck Jonathan had all along been known as a very cautious man, politician and president. His last assignment observing the November 24, 2025 Guinea-Bissau elections, and his incredibly perceptive and strong reaction to the coup that upstaged the polls, however, suggested that either Nigerians didn’t quite know the man or he had undergone an incredible metamorphosis since his misadventure into president election politics in 2022 and last October. Dr Jonathan had led the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission to monitor Guinea-Bissau’s presidential and legislative elections. The election pitted incumbent president Umaro Embalo, candidate of the Madem‑G15 party, against leading opposition candidate Fernando Dias, candidate of the Party for Social Renewal (PRS) and his coalition partners. But on November 26, a day before the results were officially released, the unimaginable occurred. The results were annulled, a coup was declared in the most unusual fashion, first by the president himself, and later by the coup leaders who were the president’s military allies, while a supposedly one-year transition regime was emplaced.

The problem with the Guinea-Bissau polls is not just that the now ‘deposed’ president connived at a coup that subverted the elections, or that his military allies led the coup, or that he had in fact lost the election and needed an excuse not to hand over to the presumed winner, Mr Dias, or that this would be the third time he would flirt with coups d’etat, having assumed office on the back of a forcible claim to the office in 2019 via a 54 percent runoff vote. Or even that he repeated the evil ploy midway into his presidency in 2022, years before the latest chicanery. In fact, hapless Guinea-Bissau can have all the tragic drama it wants, and perhaps with a little help from outside can find a resolution that would power their democracy and lift the country out of the developmental doldrums years of leadership incompetence and corruption, and a national reputation as a drug courier hub, had sentenced the country. Furthermore, many commentators have made one or two uncomplimentary remarks about the lousy change of guard in Guinea-Bissau, including the increasingly impotent United Nations castrated and rendered spineless by the warmongering and apoplectic United States president Donald Trump.

The problem is that former president Jonathan, who has seemed to acquire new political and leadership clothes, is giving Nigerians tough bones to chew and wearing odd clothes. The clothes are paradoxically fitting, but they were revealed by the Guinea-Bissau polls and the coup which trapped the former Nigerian president for a day in that country. Soon after he was evacuated from the coup-prone nation, Dr Jonathan unleashed a fusillade of denunciations against the ‘deposed’ President Embalo and the coup leaders. Though used to waffling, on this occasion, Dr Jonathan minced no words in damning the chicanery he believed the exiled Guinea-Bissau president had disreputably enacted. And he was quite assertive in his opinion, indeed very definitive.

Read Also: Wike, Buratai and FCT land controversy

Hear him at length: “What happened in Guinea-Bissau is quite disturbing to me, a person who believes in democracy. In fact, I feel more pain than the day I called Buhari to congratulate him when I lost the election as a sitting president. It is painful for me that President Embaló was the one announcing a military takeover of the government. It is totally unacceptable. What happened in Guinea-Bissau, I would not call it a coup; it was not a coup. For lack of a better word, I will say it was a ceremonial coup because it was President Embaló who announced the coup before the military later came up to address the world that they were in charge of the government.”

Still animated and angry, he added: “Embaló had already announced that there was a coup, which is strange. Not only announcing the coup, but Embaló, while the coup took place, was using his phone and addressing media organisations across the world that he had been arrested. I’m a Nigerian close to 70, and I know how they keep Heads of State when a coup takes place. They cannot be playing pranks; nobody should call others fools. There is no way there will be a military coup at a time when they were about to announce election results, and the president was the person who announced the coup. It doesn’t happen anywhere.”

Though there were a few moments in his denunciations when his characteristic inclination for excessive caution peered out, on the whole, however, he pulled the peroration off admirably. It was a relief to hear the former Nigerian president declaim convincingly on a subject dear to the hearts of many Nigerians and West Africans who had endured decades of terror under military jackboots. He was not as definitive after the 2023 presidential election despite its cleanness and fairness, and he inexplicably and unwisely tried to re-enter the 2027 presidential race for an office that obviously continues to tantalise him. But on the occasion of the Guinea-Bissau poll and the concomitant coup contrived against it, Dr Jonathan was firm and brilliant, in fact elegant. Nigerians will hope his new self is not an aberration, a caricature of his old self, or a gargoyle imitating his ambitious self.
